I showed up at 5:30 tonight on friday only to experience 5 young employees that were standing and talking to eachother in a circle around the register. They seemed annoyed if i asked a question for help and reluctant to leave their talking circle. Maybe its at the end of a long day for them, but for me too, and would have been nice to at least feel welcome. Lost my interest to do business there despite needing a jacket for the snow park tomorrow. If the owner sees this and there are vide cameras, i would recommend checking them at that time on the date of this review. read more

We do both child and adult ski rentals here, and they're always conscientious. My son left his skis at the resort, and they even swung by to pick them up when they were on the mountain. read more

I recently purchased a Nemo Aurora 2P backpacking tent to use on my hike around the TRT (Tahoe Rim Trail). I needed a quality tent that would meet my two person needs without killing my budget. The tent is fabulous but suffered a stitching failure during our trip and upon my return I was mortified that I couldn't locate my receipt. I took the tent back to Bonnie and the girls at Mountain Recreation and they arranged for a replacement, no questions asked. Although I'm a life-long REI member, I shop local in order to support local commerce and the jobs they provide, whenever I can. 5 stars for quality service EVERYTIME, not just this time. Mountain Rec sells a wide variety of outdoor gear, for camping, backpacking, skiing, running, and who knows what other pursuits. It also has a big selection of clothing and shoes. Some of its salespeople are very knowledgeable and helpful. Other salesclerks are more decorative than functional. You can tell the difference by looking. It is located near Highway 49, so if you are driving thru Grass Valley, stop by and check it out. read more

Nice place! The folks that were working there were very friendly. I was looking for ski pants and ended up buying them here. I would go back if I was looking for ski apparel. Mountain Recreation is one of the top skiing/specialty stores in Northern California. I live in San Francisco and still make the trek to buy my ski equipment, sunglasses and sporty sports clothing here. The owners, Jill and Jason, are top-notch and provide great, honest advice about products for sports enthusiasts of all levels. Their demos and rentals are great too, providing the opportunity to test-drive a set of skis before buying them. 5-stars for sure! read more

I just returned from walking the Camino de Santiago and I am so thankful that I shopped at Mountain Recreation for my shoes, socks and other equipment. The staff recommended Ahnu boots and the boots were so comfortable that I walked over 200 miles without a blister. The staff also helped me adjust my backpack before I left town. Great local board shop! Stopped in here one day just to take a look around and they were friendly and informative. Went home with a lot to mull over and was back the next day to buy a board! They have lots of outdoor supplies and gear as well as apparel. My wife found a warm vest she loves and I will definitely be going back to rent her some gear when we are ready to hit the mountain. read more

Be careful when shopping at this store. I brought my son in to purchase a season long snowboard rental. We were informed that they only offer this service for skis for youths (a service we have used in the past.) I decided to price out buying the equipment new to help our local economy a bit. A man helped us to put together a package that would allow for some growth. He was knowledgeable and friendly, and so we made the purchase feeling good. Three days later when I returned to pick up the equipment I was greeted by a rather in-your-face, gregarious older woman. Her nature boarded on rude as she impatiently waited on me. She gave every impression that no one could be more important than herself. She unashamedly, and without apology, explained that the previous salesman made an error. The wrong boots were rung up and I would need to remit another $16. She then put me on the spot to make a decision quickly, as though I might consider cancelling my purchase. The original bill, paid up front, came to roughly $440. But she made it clear that it would be $16 which I paid immediately. But I left with a bad taste in my mouth over a measly $16. read more

I always shop local first, however will never step foot in this store again! They just lost a loyal customer along with as many people as I can spread the word to. I have purchased ski's, snowboards, helmets, glasses, goggles and much more from this store. My boyfriend bought a jacket for my birthday, I went in with the receipt and talked to the woman at the register about trying another style. She said "she could order it" and did not mention once that there were no returns on orders. When I picked up the jacket and mentioned returning it the same woman said "it's yours! there is no way to return it." Worst part, just looked at REI and the same jacket is $100 LESS!! REI shopper for life - forget trying to stay local if they aren't going to do what's best for their customers. read more
