Oh my God. This is the most amazing costume shop I've ever seen. It's massive. Absolutely anything and everything you can imagine. It's easy to find what you want. There's nothing commercial about this place. Laura is the owner and very helpful. She can order anything you need but don't find in just a matter of days it's a must for Halloween and special events. And the staff are really knowledgeable. They know their merchandise. It's in Nevada City, which is the cutest little gold rush town you could imagine. Great restaurants and bars. I love shopping at Solstice whenever I am visiting Nevada City. I have purchased boots, tops, and a few home decor pieces. All were of quality and a great value. The boots were leather and made in Italy and only $30. One of the framed pictures was a great deal too and went so well in my bedroom. I work down the street and spilled red sauce all over my (borrowed) dress. I ran in to solstice in a ruuuush to get something "clownesk". 2 employees immediately came to the rescue. They showed me to the clown wear and allowed me to try things on. They helped me until we found something perfect. This was a very unique store. It was fun to walk around in because there were ap many different styles. They had some new items as well as used. It had started to rain pretty hard and my family and I all found great hats to keep our heads dry. They stay open late during Halloween season. Friday and Saturday they stay open until people stop coming in. Last year they stayed open until 10pm on HALLOWEEN! Awesome shop! They carry just about everything. From low end to $400 plus masks. Way better than the cheap pop up stores. read more

I have been in this store many times. I really loved the array of items that they sell in their store. I have consigned many items and had a credit there under my name, when I went back to collect, my credit was gone! I had about $58.00 in credit and they told me there was nothing under my name?? So where did my credit go?? I doubt I will ever take my clothes there again to resell. read more

I've been a patron of Solstice they first opened in our little town. This afternoon my family (husband, son, daughter) and I went in to do some last minute Halloween shopping. With the recent wave of power outages we were happy to see the store open. We know that this is their busiest time of year and the power uncertainty has really hitting the bottom line of our small businesses. After today, we will no longer be buying anything from this store. After about 15 minutes of shopping around, the owner Laura (whom I've socialized with on a few occasions) took my 16 year old daughter outside and accused her of "acting suspicious" and informed her that she was no longer welcome in the store. My daughter had been trying on shoes and checking out costumes like the rest of the people in the store. She's been going there since she was a little kid, and even had hopes of working there someday- she's super into vintage and slow fashion. I understand that teens make questionable choices, and my kid is certainly not perfect, but she doesn't steal and understands the struggle of small businesses in our community (our very close friends own a shop just around the corner from Solstice). I can't say I'm angry, just super bummed that she was treated so badly, and won't be able to continue to visit one of her favorite shops in town. After seeing my daughter leave in tears, none of my family will be going there again, nor would I recommend it to anyone I know. It's really sad that this business owner treats members of the community so badly. read more

Horrible. Rude. Inconsiderate. This review is fort the experience of attempting to sell at solstice although I find their selection poor and items overpriced. I went in because I had heard it was one of the few consignment stores in Nevada county.i brought in two pairs doc martens and a brand new hoodie. The lady looked through my items and laughingly exclaimed she would be buying them all. Great! I thought. Boy was I wrong. A modest offer I would have accepted could be over $50 for the high end items. Nope. She offered me $14. Doc martens run about $100 and there were TWO pairs. When I told her I would not be accepting her offer her entire demeanor changed. (It wasn't really an offer anyways, she had assumed I would accept and put the items away already) she slammed my boots on the table, huffing and sighing the whole time and made some snarky comment I can't remember. The cherry on top? She polished one of my boots without my permission, so now they look weird. You could not pay me to go back, never again. Save your money and your time and find a business that appreciates it's customers. read more

First of all, up until August 2016 I used to live in downtown Nevada City for over 8 years and was a resident of Nevada County 17 years, longer than this store has been in existence. I have shopped at Solstice and I always appreciated the non-mainstream, eclectic quirkiness of this shop. As a lover and enthusiast of unique and vintage clothes, at times I bought some cool vintage things here when I was in the market for such. I also brought clothes of my own in to barter/sell, and always tried to make an educated choice of what to bring in based on what sorts of things I see for sale in the store. I do realize that all shops in downtown Nevada City are relatively small and storage space is always limited here. But every time I came here with nice things to sell or trade, it seemed like the clerks always picked through my things as if they were rags. I even once had a pair of young men who worked here reject my entire bag of clothes (except for one hat which I got $3 for) and arrogantly tell me, "We pretty much only buy costumes for Burning Man", when that obvious wasn't the case as there were plenty of non-costume items for sale too. If they don't want a particular item, I understand. But I don't appreciate criticisms of my things as if they were trash and I were a dummy for bringing them in the first place :( The last time I tried to sell something, I was preparing to move out of state and came across a really awesome fairy costume I had WON FIRST PLACE WITH at a costume contest several years ago. I called the shop and asked them when their hours were for buying. Unfortunately for me (and them!) I was told they stop buying at 4pm, and the days of the week they look at stuff were farther away than I was going to be around. It was only 4:10pm, and I explained the above situation the young girl on the phone, that I was moving in only a couple of days, and had literally just found this prize-winning fairy costume while packing, and I literally was only minutes away as I too lived downtown, and asked if there was any way they could make an exception for me. I was given my answer in one single, blunt, impolite, "No." No explanation. No polite refusal. Just a flat-out snotty "No". Stunned at the rude tone of the answer, I repeated myself politely, that this was a particularly good costume and I was literally right down the street, and would have brought it in sooner had I have found it sooner. It was a unique situation. Yet again, the girl just gave me a single rude "NO", as if I was a huge idiot for thinking they would be so reasonable. If I was told no in a polite manner such as, "I'm sorry. It sounds really nice but unfortunately our store policy is that we stop buying at 4pm and I don't have the authority to change those decisions on my own", or something like that, I would totally have understood and left it at that and probably wouldn't be writing this review now. But given such a flat, rude NO not once but TWICE was like being slapped in the face by a person who sounded young enough to be my daughter. Well, the loss is theirs. I gladly sold my fairy costume on ebay for $75. After all the years and time I had spent in this store, since it's very beginning, I would have hoped to have been treated with much more respect and kindness than I was actually given every time I tried to sell them nice things. How silly of me to expect such. This is a pretty cool store which unfortunately has some awful clerks working there, that have terrible people skills and need some lessons in manners. read more

I went in on Friday to have Solstice tell me how much they would give me for five items New Navy girl costume, bought brand new for $60, she sold for 30 New Navy girl shoes School girl outfit Skeleton jumper Vampire kid's cape, she sold for $7 Laura the owner was out to lunch and three employees said that I could leave the items and they will estimate what they would give me and I could return to pick up. I asked them to call me when she decided on the price and then I would go from there. I never heard back from them so I called on Saturday and spoke with Laura, she told me the amount she would give me and I said that was low and she said well then you need to come pick up your things and I said I'm in Reno but will do so. She said well I already priced everything and put it on the floor; I will try to get things together for you. Sunday morning I called on my way back from Reno and said I'm coming in and she said ok I'll try to get things together but I think I sold two items already, but not sure. I said ok I'll help look for things at the store. I got there and she said yes I think I sold the navy outfit, I can give you 18 (and some change) in store credit or 10 (and some change) in cash. I looked around to find something but I couldn't find anything, I tried looking for her to tell her that I either want 30 because that is what she sold the navy outfit for or my outfit back but I know that that wasn't going to happen because it's sold even though I never told her to sell my stuff. I told a guy there that I couldn't find her and that I was not happy with what happened . She called me about 2 min after I left and she said my worker told me what you said and well it was your responsibility not to leave stuff here and that is the rule. I said that is not what I was told and she said that she records all things in the store and I said well listen to it because you will know that that is not what happened. They told me they would call me. She said why you leave for Reno if you knew you had stuff here. I said that is not the point. She kept arguing with me about that and then she says well I'm not sure if the camera was recording... wtf. She said well if you want to go to court for your $30 then go for it. The customer service here is very bad, the selection lately has been OK but pretty overpriced. I have had overall very bad encounters with the employees who seem pretty busy socializing instead of helping customers. I even was treated very rudely after interrupting some gossiping between staff, even after waiting a few minutes to hope for a break in the conversation! I used to make it a point to stop in since I travel from Sacramento to Tahoe often but I definitely wont go out of my way to stop here anymore. read more

AWESOME!!!! Solstice is the THE SPOT in Nevada City for great used clothing and costumes! It's like the only place around I can find cool clothing and outfits for guys. They have tons of guys stuff, and the prices are extremely reasonable. The staff is super friendly and helpful, and have always asked me if I needed help finding something. Liberty was super sweet and helped me pick out some stylish outfits (with hats) from some things around the shop. There simply is no better place to find cool clothes at such great prices! read more

I don't understand where all the negative reviews are coming from. I've been in this shop multiple times, always leave with some great finds at unbelievably good prices. The owner/buyer has a good eye for clothing that she'll accept for consignment. My only regret - I walked out yesterday without buying an awesome Urban Tribe jacket. (I'm hoping I can buy it over the phone tomorrow.) Do yourselves a favor, and stop by the store. You'll be very happy with what you find. read more

I wander a lot thru Nevada City and one day I happened upon Solstice. The funny and funky window dressings caught my eyes and thought, "I just gotta' see what THIS store is all about ".I just had to go in. I do most of my shopping at thrift stores and this is the next best thing. Love the place whether I am buying or just schmoozing. BTW, I had a friend, 'Garlic' (RIP) whom I used to beg to tell me where he got his crazy hats, scarves, and every other crazy outfit he wore but he would never tell me. It was Solstice!
