The best Thrift Store I have EVER been to ........ and I've been popping tags since 1975! We were visiting the GV area for the weekend & always like to check out the local thrifting opportunities. We were blown away by the size of the store & how organized & clean it was! If you like thrifting, do yourself a big favor & pay this store a visit!! Oh! Open on a Sunday was important for us. We don't live in town, but my 80+ parents do. My mom needed a smaller walker pronto. Called they were definitely open and Ryan took a look and yes they had several walks in several sizes. We got a walker, a few pairs of pants for mom and some cooking items to help with meals. They had lots of fine dishes, furniture, clothes, books, rugs etc. They took really good care of the store as well. Well worth a look see. read more

A lot of interesting vintage clothing at this thrift store and the prices are reasonable compared to other thrift stores in the region. I found a pair of heeled boots in a size 9 that I loved and decided to buy. I literally can't find my shoe size at any thrift store and their shoe selection is high quality and clean which is rare when buying shoes thrift. They have a small room dedicated to vintage and specialty clothing items but you can find vintage and designer throughout the store if you're willing to spend time digging through everything. Found a Marmot puffer jacket which was the highlight of my trip to this store. read more

When I moved to GV two years ago, I bought quite a few pieces of furniture to deck out my home- the prices are competitive, the items are in very good shape, and the staff is friendly. This is really a great thrift store, even during this season of the flu. I write to remind everyone that they only take donations via DRIVE-IN from 10 am to 3 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (THEY WILL BE CLOSED THANKSGIVING WEEK). I love hospice thrift stores - and also appreciate the mostly volunteer staffs. Not the cheapest thrift store in town - but there are great deals to be had if you drop by regularly. The staff have been nothing but helpful and kind to my daughter and I. My thirteen year old loves to thrift at this store (Thursdays are discount clothes so we swing by often). There are some great cookbooks and often interesting kitchen items. read more

New location, I miss the Nevada City spot, which had a lot more charm. They are not very friendly in this store. Did they fire the old staff and hire all new people and volunteers? A pretty solid selection of clothes and gear, jewelry display, shoes and accessories. I haven't checked out the household supply or furniture sections yet, which appears to be sectioned off at the back of the store but not readily displayed. They have shopping carts and hand baskets for ease in movement through the store while you shop. Pretty spacious store layout. They do a great job keeping things clean and organized. I really like that you can easily find a designer or specialty item. Prices are a bit too high for this economy. read more

I've frequented both Hospice locations for a couple of years now each time I'm in town. Have spent hundreds of dollars between the two stores frequently in the past. The prices have progressively been getting insanely high, and now in the new location have reached ridiculous levels. This isn't a thrift store. It's a second hand store that charges so much money for junk that it's better to buy things brand new. Not only isn't it helping the community, but the sales are slowing down and they will not be bringing in anywhere near profits that they used to. It makes no sense. And if it aims to target resellers, it also makes no sense. Anyone buying anything from the store is contributing to the mission and they are proving themselves for only the wealthy to afford. Shame, I quite like some of the folks that work there, but I can not recommend this "thrift store" anymore. Try the other ones in town that are more reasonable. read more

I love the store now it is a whole lot bigger and it is evenly spaced on the shelves and it is well organized and the staff members in there are very very nice to work with when I am trying to look for something to wear. They are all organized and in categories and there are signs up to tell you where to find the books department everything in there is so clean and easy to find too. This used to be the best thrift store in Nevada county. I would have given it 5 stars 3 years ago but under new management and after opening another store the quality went way down and the prices way up! Their jewelry is ridiculously overpriced now and total junk will be treated as treasure. I still shop here but there are much better thrift stores to find great deals. Hospice is always an amazing organization to support but considering that the items are donated the pricing could be be much fairer!! read more

So what do the four gal members of our Birthday Club do during our 3 day trip to NC? Near the top of the list after hiking and eating---go the Hospice Gift and Thrift Store. From the outside it looks very small and unimpressive. Once you walk in you will be thoroughly amazed! Lots of clothes, books (nicely organized), kitchen knick knacks, chocks, furniture and plenty of things you never knew you needed. One could spend hours here. Two of us Birthday Gal members are BIG shopaholics. One is medium and our fourth not so much. But we ALL found things to buy. Here's a good thing to know about this Thrifte Shoppe: On the first weekend of each month most everything is half off! Upon first entering this shoppe, I noticed--and you may notice it too, so maybe I don't even need to say it, but, well, this is a review, so I should probably just up and out with it all, huh--that the layout is quite appealing. Like, the store looks clean, it looks like there's a lot of good pickings, and things look new. And I think I know why this is so: it's not huge. There aren't 18 rows of t-shirts to look through, and so, I believe, there's a good flow of items, or however you call it. Lots of people come here to buy things, and lots of shelves are promptly stocked anew. I stop in once every few weeks, and I swear I'm looking at a whole new set of clothes each time. And I'm pretty picky, and lots of things don't fit me, but I usually always come out with an item or four. During the holiday I spent about 30 minutes picking through hundreds of Christmas records. Can't beat that. They carry polaroids and other neat camera equipment (sometimes even enlargers). Good selection of glassware. I'm always looking for a new/old tobacco pipe, but I haven't seen one yet. Anyway, great thrift store. Friendly staff. Lotta regulars who'll give you tips on how to more effectively browse. Clean, organized, and cheap. My kinda thrift store! I bought some books and knick knacks here and my receipt was a total of 2.83. The people working kept bringing stuff out the entire time I was there. Most of the clothing is very dated, circa 1980s, but hey, you hipsters might find something you like. The store itself is pretty good, I usually find something to buy here if I look thoroughly. It feels good knowing the money spent is supporting a good cause. You can also find some interesting vintage/old things here on occasion, I assume because families who have had an elderly loved one passed away who was in hospice care, donate their items to this shop as a kind gesture. Some of the employees here could use a few lessons in manners, though! There is one particular woman who goes around squawking at people to get in the check out line anywhere from 1/2 hour to 45 minutes before the actual closing time of the store. She won't just announce it loudly like most stores do, that they are closing in 15 minutes or whatnot. She will actually make the effort to walk up to each and every person in the store and stare you in the eye and harass you until you start making your way to the huge line she's created at the registers. I understand that the employees want to go home at a reasonable hour, but I find this person particularly annoying and unprofessional. The one time I have ever donated items here, it was a nightmare! A friend and I had some very nice things to donate, no trashy cheap items whatsoever. The employees picked through our things like snobs, only took about 20% of what we had to give, and made comments that some of them weren't good enough (yet I have seen much lower quality items for sale in the store than what we had to donate!). While waiting in the donation line I got yelled at by the same employees for taking a perfectly good chair cushion out of their garbage. Luckily my friend was already annoyed at that point and stood up for me by telling them it was obviously something they considered trash, and I had no money and was not working at the time, so what the heck did they care if I took it off their hands? After that they backed off. But I do not donate things here anymore because of that experience. The Cancer-Aid Thrift Shop in GV is always my first choice for donating, they have never turned away anything I've taken them, and have always treated me nicely. read more

This was one of my favorite thrift stores when I lived in Nevada City/Grass Valley. A great place for funky furniture. A housmate & I bought a huge 6 ft slab of vintage marble to replace a countertop for $90 (actually a good price). I also found a good quality butterscotch colored, very modern vintage sofa for only $12. I will have it for years & years. When they have mark downs, they really mark them down. read more

This is my favorite shop to go to! I find a lot of new very inexpensive items! I find anything and everything I could possiby want! The manager Bruce is a very funny man and keeps the volunteers happy and on their toes (for those who don't know, the store is run mainly by volunteers and for such a great cause). Wouldn't donate to these people if they were the last thrift store on the planet! I was moving out and had an entire children's library of books to donate. Employees were just carrying things inside when I pulled in as they were closing for the day. One of them rushed up to my car and demanded that I leave because, I was told, the donation drop off time had just closed, and if I left the books, anyway, I would be "cited for dumping". Instead, I donated the books to the Friends of the Library for resale; I'm sure THEY were pleased. Hey Hospice! Ever hear the expression "beggars can't be choosers" or, how about, "never look a gift horse in the mouth"? 1. Make your donation hours more accessible if you WANT donations. 2. When charities begin dictating terms of the charity, then they already have more money than they need. They don't need my help--and won't get any from this point forward. I would throw my donations in the dumpster before giving these pimps one dime. read more
