We've been sitting at our table here for an hour and a half. We just now got our salad. Worst service ever. Took 45 minutes to place our order. We finally got our food. Almost 2 hours. We visited from out of town for our anniversary dinner. It is a quaint and cozy place, reminiscent of a Steak and Ale setting from the 90s. Unfortunately, it was a bit worse for the wear. The place was pretty empty but we were seated at a very small table right in a hallway/heavily walked area which didn't allow for us to have any ability to really talk quietly or give a date night feel. The chairs need to be updated as they are badly stained and the padding is barely present. The pros: Our server was personable and put his best foot forward. Potato skins & housemade ranch were great for our appetizer. Portions were generous and timing between courses were well spaced. Cons: The sweet tea was so sweet that it wasn't consumable. It was just straight sugar. We asked for bread multiple times and it was seemingly forgotten each time. It ended up coming out mid entree and was undercooked. The butter served with it tasted more like a cheap margarine instead of a nice whipped butter we would typically expect. The table side house salad was fun but the lettuce was simply a cut up head of iceberg and was riddled with pink and brown color. The house cut prime rib came well done rather than medium rare. It was dry and flavorless. The au jus also lacked a flavor profile. Considering it is their specialty it was very disappointing. The ribeye was ordered medium but came out more on the rare side and seemed like it had just been cooked very quickly for a sear and slapped on the plate. The entree plates came with the steaks and 2 sides and unfortunately the plates weren't large enough to accommodate everything. The baked potatoes were good but the rice pilaf and au grautin potatoes were very underwhelming. We were offered a free dessert due to our steaks not being cooked correctly. While we appreciated the offer, it just wasnt comparable for the situation. The server tried his best and most of the issues weren't within his control, so we still tipped him well. We were hoping to get away from the chain restaurant feel and like independent, locally owned places. We were really rooting for this place. Hands down, best restaurant in the area. Celebrated my commencement from Purdue, and my, "after finals" meals here. Their appetizers are incredible, especially the spicy shrimp. Their prime rib is some of the best I've ever had, and comes with delicious sides. You have to try their potato au gratin. I also love the various soups of the day that come with the meals. It's impossible to leave this place hungry. They also have a nice bar, and all the servers are great. The warmth and cozy mood greeting us first stepping into the small entry held up by a Hallmark movie fireplace carried through the entire experience. There has been no other attention to detail or level of service ever received in my time even compared to national legends like Fleming's Prime Steakhouse. I was sent to secure a celebration station for my sister graduating with her masters on that Saturday night flinging us the first blizzard of winter. Lafayette managed to maintain the Midwestern mindset of "if others are out it can't be that bad!" and sure enough, seemed everyone had already stayed out last minute Christmas shopping and thus became those "others out" convincing even older clients to keep their reservations. And I see why now: after hearing about this area's best dinning for a decade yet only ever glancing over on my way past to Town & Gown, Red Seven, Sacred Grounds, and even Eleventh House (bagels!), we all admitted to each other this is a new smash hit, a top favorite, no better dining domicile to drop into with high expectations and have each more than met. Of course I must flout the other local greats too! This small city amidst the cornfields needs to strut a little about our food when we only have some big university across the river to show off. But yes, I dropped in right at dinner time since, as others unfortunately mentioned, trying to call is pointless. I tried at least five times without one answer. That actually is a hint but I didn't take it and walked in to inquire about bringing two more with me in 30 minutes. The two lovely ladies at the standing desk hardly looked down and were saying how it's entirely booked for the night. And who turned up at the same time? No less than Mrs. Owner herself, too amazingly friendly and with a look towards the bar told me to come back and try anyway as the bar is first come first serve and will likely open up for us by 30 minutes. But remember that blizzard? My sisters and I didn't get back for 40 minutes and by time we looked in the bar was full. A quick run across the street to Chilis turned up the same result so after a quick mood swing we were back to wait if necessary at Mountain Jacks. I was surprised not even a second we were in and the owner was far too kind pointing us towards the bar saying a gentleman was just about to clear out leaving three stools for us. That really sums it up. Incredible personal touch and sensitivity to the immediate situations and making sure all pieces have a place to fall into - that's the superior business craft none has ever matched for me. I didn't ask for anything special yet received more timely loving attention than even at a restaurant my group spent over $1000.00 at. Speaking of price, what a relief to feel like there's awareness of what food is actually worth! I was so satisfying to be finishing up and all us collectively mention together that even at the top end of Tippecanoe County establishments this could be well argued as worth it. Our food was treated right, complimentary bread loaf was an excellent starter to get us going for the amazing shrimp, winter perfect soup, alongside our drinks gave us a feast. We were curious why the menu was so small considering the skills of the chef and culinary craft that could easily offer more. The drinks menu especially tiny and needing a few more house specials like Red Seven and Town & Gown. If I had to be picky. Also noticed my ribs were a bit tough, Cheddars are much more easy eating. My sister's filet wasn't as succulent or smooth eating as ones we've surprisingly had from Outback. Yes surprising indeed; Outback sends out an amazing filet mignon about half the time in my experience. Yet all these foibles are easy to overlook when we shouldn't have been seated in the first place! This is the iconic city granddad of restaurants. I would say that the downtown destination, Bistro 501, surpasses it only due to a more involved menu and delivering outdoor dining options. It is way too easy to recommend any couple or those taking out their parents and thinking Longhorn, Texas, and similar chains avoid those basic casual options and reserve Mountain Jacks - - if you are able! read more

I was so excited to see this restaurant as I thought I would never get a chance to eat here again! My server, Kyle, was very friendly and welcoming. The stuffed mushrooms, table side salad, and prime rib were fantastic. Ice cream pie is definitely a dessert to share as it was enormous. Food was very good for the most part. What I have an issue with is that I paid $28.99 for a salad, fries, tartar sauce, ketchup and three pieces of oddly sized lake perch. Are you kidding. $28.99 FOR ONLY THREE PIECES OF PERCH. Up here in Michigan City I can get 8 pieces for $16-$20. WHAT A RIP-OFF. Came in for dinner with my husband. It was great as normal. Service was great especially our waitress Taylor. She was so nice very attentive our cups never went dry. For dinner we had French onion soup,filet mignon with au gratin potatoes. My husband had prime rib and mash potatoes with au gratin potatoes as well. It all was very good we tryed all the shrimp add ons as well my favorite was the scampi he agreed. For dessert we had apple strudel with ice cream just the right sweetness to end the night. Our service was great! We enjoyed a great dinner with our daughter. Between the three of us, we had sirloin, lobster, and a smothered steak. I really liked the table side salad with fresh ingredients. My steak was SO SO good. We had no room left over for dessert but we did see them on a tray as they were presented to others. We recently dined at Mountain Jacks with a party of 19, and unfortunately, our experience was far from pleasant. From the start, we felt rushed, as if they were eager to get us in and out as quickly as possible. Constantly reminding us that we had to be out 1.45 minutes from our scheduled reservation time. However, only leaving us 30 minutes to eat our meal seems unfair. It's frustrating to feel like you're not being treated with care, especially for such a large group. The food was decent, but the overall experience was soured by the and the constant pressure to hurry up. 10 minutes left of the reservation we are asked by the waitress if a dessert was wanted??? We opted not to as we had to be out soon. A "complimentary"dessert was brought to the table for the couple celebrating 40 YEARS OF MARRIAGE. Which yes, we celebrated for as this was the whole reason for our reservation . Shortly after the owner advised us "there were complaints of us being too loud?" We were hoping for a more relaxed dining experience, especially when celebrating together, but it felt like we were just another large table to get rid of. I and our whole party of 19 WILL NOT be returning for future large gatherings, and I'd recommend finding somewhere that values the experience of their guests. When I asked if we couldn't have one of the several small 2-seat tables and told if we didn't want what they assigned we could have another booth. (The girl checking us in was making decisions as ppl checked in.). Given the same size huge booth across from the front door. In December. Brr. Ordered my prime rib med-rare and it was completely brown and dry. Difficult to cut. Silverware was thin and cheap making even cutting steamed green beans difficult. Doubt we will return. Reserved a table on December to celebrate my daughter's May graduation. We had a group of 14. Called several days ahead to confirm. Called day of to confirm. Hostess said table would be ready at 4:30. Arrived to put flowers on table and get family arriving from out of state. Not only was the table not ready, but they had split our group into two tables. It was so loud that we could t hear what anyone at our table was saying. Food and portions was subpar for the price. I spoke to owners and manager before and after meal. They said they wanted to make it right but offered no solution on how to make it right unless it was a huge inconvenience to us... move tables together so 14 would have to sit at a table for 10, wait until another table opened, etc. The experience upset everyone and ruined what was supposed to be a happy night! read more

My family and I have been to Mountain Jack's several times in the past couple years. They've always had great service and food, and tonight has been no different. I had made reservations online (or so I thought), but when my party and I showed up, they couldn't find our reservation and I couldn't find the confirmation. This was 100% me thinking I had made a reservation but not actually doing it because I don't remember getting a confirmation call like I've had in the past. Anyways, the hostess and staff were so considerate and generous about our situation. They prepared us a table within 10 minutes, and treated us very kindly. What a wonderful surprise to find this amazing restaurant. I was warmly greeted at the door and brought to a table with a view of nicely decorated dining area. The waiter was promptly, at my table. He really knew the menu and when I asked for explanations and suggestions he offered great suggestions. I had the calamari for an appetizer. I can honestly say it was the best I have ever eaten. Not rubbery and mixed with veggies that compliment the dish. Amazing! For the main course I enjoyed the salmon with the house special glaze. Very good. Definitely the best steakhouse in the area. The prime rib is king, but the ribeye is a close second. I've always loved this place. Classic, dark, has a lodge sort of feel. Desserts change and they bring you a platter to view before you order, which is classy. Mom-Thurs they have early bird specials which include an entree and side. Check those out from 5-6pm. Hade the rare prime rib special, broccoli and added a salad. Delicious! I love it when I order a rare piece of beef and it actually comes out rare. This place is always classy. Seemed a little busy during COVID for us, but they clearly were trying. Will always support this classic spot. read more

Can I give this place 4+ stars ? Like maybe 4.5 stars. They really pulled through on getting us in on Christmas Eve for our reservation. We had been calling for 3 days and it just kept going to an automatic answer, which you could not leave a voicemail on. We tried calling during their business hours after 5pm and again no answer... same auto answer. We finally went online and tried to put in a reservation. Someone called us back the next day and fit us in. The atmosphere is lovely. Several fireplaces, and I love how it has a coat check next to the entrance. This is Lafayette's finest dining restaurant. It was beautifully decorated for Christmas and the atmosphere was cozy. Our waiter told us the restaurant opened in 1977. This place is a classic. Most meals come with soup or salad. We got the house salad. They used to make it in front of you. Now, instead, you have to tell them what you want on the salad. You can also add bacon and/or mushrooms. Trust me, add the bacon ! They give you plenty and the flavor is amazing ! It's more like finely chopped ham than bacon. They have several house-made dressings. I got the red wine vinegar creamy dressing. Very yummy ! I got the crab cakes to start off. They were fresh-made, but I think they used the canned crab with alot of breading. The flavor reminded me of a salmon patty. Decent, but not the lump-crab meat patties that I'm used to. My best friend got the prime rib rare. This is supposedly what they are known for. It comes with an au ju sauce and house-made horseradish cream sauce. I also got the largest prime rib. It was 1.5lbs and bone-in steak. The knife I was given was not sharp and they had to trade it out. I guess these are the same ones from the 70s lol. It was good, but even with the replaced knife I had to work too hard to saw into the meat in order to cut it into pieces. My husband got the Ribeye. He had ordered it medium well, but it came out medium. He liked it fine. Definately get the augratin potatoes as your side ! They are cheesy and delicious !!! Another person in our group got the NY Strip. He had ordered it rare and it came out medium well. He sat for quite a while (We were 1/4 complete with our meal) before the waiter finally checked back and then put in an order to replace his steak. The waiter was a bit of a smarty pants. He kind of had an attitude like, .... well I'll work here if I must. Lol Supposedly, this place is known for their mud pie, but we didn't have enough room for dessert. Total bill was about $100 for 2 people including wine and an appetizer. This is a nice place to have a romantic evening. read more

Whenever we come to town; we must go here. This is a destination experience of the finest caliber. From the ambiance, service, quality and the caring of the owner....an era gone by in dining. Much better nice restaurants in Lafayette or WL. Made reservations for my 75th birthday about 6 weeks in advance. 5pm. Arrived right on time but had to wait about 15 minutes. Despite the dining rooms nearly empty we were given a very large table in the bar and when I asked any of the smaller tables within sight were available I was told we could have one in the dining room. It was across from the front door. We froze. Prime rib was dry and over cooked. The fork was bent and flimsy. Will not go back. read more

Food was great. Our waitress was great. However, it was odd that our party was rushed and reminded we only had 1 hour and 45 minutes for a party of 9 adults and 10 children. Then right as we were about to leave, the owner came out to tell us our party, in particular the children, were being too loud. Literally right after we had dessert sent to our table to celebrate the couple celebrating their 40th anniversary. A person in our party even brought a cake and there wasn't enough time to serve it after eating our entrees we were rushed to eat.
