A lovely old…read morecemetery The Hillside Cemetery is located on an inlet of the Sakonnet River in the quaint old town of Tiverton, Rhode Island. A lovely place for a walk with distant views of the river and some nice rolling hills. The cemetery is quite huge with both new and very old parts. The oldest graves date back to the 18th century and of course there are others that look older but are now impossible to read. Lots of very cool and unique memorials and gravestones complete with unusual and archaic names and symbols. Some of the stones still look new and fresh while the softer stones are sometimes broken and worn down to virtually nothing. Hillside is a lovely old cemetery in a lovely old town. Many old graveyards have a spooky and morbid feel to them but not this one. I wouldn't exactly call it cheerful but it is a beautiful and historic area and a very nice place for a very peaceful stroll.

Walls graves and…read moreflowers The Acushnet Cemetery is a lovely 23 acre graveyard that was incorporated in 1881 but is actually much older. The original cemetery than was here dates back to around 1711 and the new one is just sort of an extension. The graveyard is fairly modest and doesn't have huge or imposing monuments. There are some small obelisks and lots of beautiful designs on the older stones. Many of the new graves are very well cared for and have lots of flowers and other tokens of affection. Unfortunately some of the stones have been toppled, hopefully by natural forces and age and not by some knucklehead intent on vandalism. Some of the really old ones, probably from the early part of the 18th century, are almost worn away by the years and elements. Acushnet Cemetery is a lovely and peaceful place with stone walls, interesting gravestones and beautiful flowers and plants. A great part of the history of the small town.

It's…read morea tourist attraction; while there are many prominent locals buried here, the out of town visitor will most likely be coming to visit the grave of HP Lovecraft, the (posthumously) famous author who died young before his influence had been realized. His gravesite is now a sort of atheistic shrine, with locals depositing various memorabilia to commemorate his influence on various aspects of literary fiction and gaming. While he seemed serious on the surface, he was, in his own time, a giant nerd, so I'm guessing he'd take these displays in the spirit they are intended. Visitors to the cemetery will find it on a relaxing parkway, and you can drive in and park. Walking around will yield some historical insights and majestic scenery. Amusingly, there were some signs up about them basically trying to get rid of their turkey problem. I don't personally view the turkeys as being a big problem, but I saw a bunch of the the last time I visited and none this time (despite seeing these birds elsewhere in the region where they are apparently common), so they must be doing something. The people that visit tend to be respectful. While a cemetery is definitionally full of dead people, it isn't really of much use unless it is seen in some way by the living, and this one is an aesthetically pleasing and engaging experience for those that choose to visit.

I went to Rhode Island from Virginia to gain some closure on my Nana's passing many years ago. I have always dreaded going to cemeteries for the obvious reasons and truly haven't been to very many during my lifetime. . I called a week or so before going to get the information on where my Nana was buried. Like I said, my time in a cemtery has been limited and I wasn't sure where to find her. The gentleman on the phone,I believe Tom was his name, was very helpful and understanding. He was pleasant to speak with and informative. Once I arrived, I was very surprised. Gate of Heaven is absolutely beautiful. Even in March, the grounds were lush and green. The trees were mature and the flowers were gorgeous. There were workers planting new flowers but never once came close to me in my grieving process. They made eye contact, smiled and gave a nod. It was heart warming that they were making this place so beautiful and respected and acknowledged my coming to visit. I couldn't ask for a more peacful place for my Nana to be laid to rest. Thank you Gate of Heaven for taking care of her when I cannot.

Ponds and vets…read more The Pine Grove Cemetery was established in the 1890's and is 50 acres of gentle and mostly level ground with fairly modest memorials. It has a few larger crypts and more elaborate gravestones but most tend to be small and simple. The cemetery has a small pond in the middle of the land and lots of very old looking trees. Many veterans, especially from World War 1, are buried here and the grounds are very well maintained. There are roads that wind through all parts of the cemetery and many flowers and special personal items are included with the memorials. A very pleasant cemetery to talk an easy walk through.

Its got a fair amount of history to it as well and it's home to many veterans from both world wars. The world war veteran graves are taken care of by the workers and every national holiday that celebrates their memory will see their graves receive a token of appreciation and respect ranging from a bouquet of flowers or some other symbol. I currently have my aunt, uncle, and grandparents buried there so when I pay the area a visit I see what goes on around there. If you are the type of person like myself that likes to take walks through cemeteries then you will be happy to know that this is the place to do it. It's peaceful and quiet (not all cemeteries are surprisingly!). There is a greenhouse / flower shop right nearby that is an ideal location for a visit if you're interested in buying something.

A very crowded…read moreneighborhood Lincoln Park is a Hebrew cemetery that is still open for new arrivals. The first thing that struck me was how crowded certain areas were. I've seen very old graveyards where the gravestones were placed close together but I don't ever think I've seen one quite this packed. Since I haven't been to many Hebrew Cemeteries I don't know if this is a common practice or unique to this particular graveyard. Others areas were very open which made quite a contrast. The cemetery is lovely and has some unique and very beautiful memorials. Lots of stones that were carved to resemble tree stumps and some very oddly shaped gravestones. The Hebrew practice of placing small stones on the gravesites out of respect was also very prevalent and added a very poignant and personal touch to this beautiful cemetery. A truly wonderful and fascinating cemetery that is a very lovely and reflective reminder of those that have lived before us and have now moved on.

It was the Jewish organization established in 1906 by Chesed Shel Emes. It is also known as Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Warwick #11. As I said, crowded but there is enough room to drive through. Most of the roadways are smooth though there is only enough space for one vehicle in each direction. The cemetery is the final resting place for jazz musician Lew Sherwood (1903-1971). was the featured vocalist with Eddy Duchin & His Orchestra during the band's greatest years, from 1933 to 1941, and was the band's primary trumpet soloist and one of its musical arrangers. There is a large polished granite Memorial wall and annual Memorial Day ceremony is held here at which the names of those Veterans who died during the prior year are unveiled. Mayflower and mayor…read more The Ancient Little Neck Cemetery is indeed ancient. It was established in 1655 and the oldest recorded grave is John Brown, the guy that actually purchased the land that the graveyard is on from the native Wampanoag tribe. The spooky old graveyard has lots of very old graves, memorials and plaques and if you take a look at the top of the old flagpole you will notice that it has a carved skull on top. A whole lot of famous colonial New England folks are buried here, including Elizabeth Tilley Howland who came over on the Mayflower and died in 1667 and Captain Thomas Willett, who became the first English mayor of New York. The ancient graveyard is an absolutely fascinating place filled with plaques and memorials about shipwrecks, wars and disasters. It looks a bit worn in places and could probably use a bit of TLC but then the scruffy look just adds to the spooky and weird ambiance. One of the coolest and historic colonial graveyards in New England. Over 1,000 graves here from 1622 up till 1993 and of course all kinds of hauntings and bizarre things have been seen in the area. An amazing and historic place to spend some time with the people of the past.

I tried to find out who owned it and finally got a hold of a gentleman who claimed to be a commisioner several years ago that told me that the Chinese bought it and that it was only mowed twice a year! Then I was looking at some statistics that werent very promising that there were sources that said remains from plots had been flung over a wall so they could bury someone else in the plot! My heart sank thinking that my grandparents couldve been flung! I havent been back to the cemetery in awhile as I live in a different state now but I am interested to see what can be done about the state of the plots and headstones. I understand that it is a historical place and that it is ancient. However there is no excuse for it to have been let go like it has been. I wanted to buy plots if there were any available so that I could be near my grandparents but I doubt there are any left.
