I wouldn't recommend this place for anyone who is gluten free. They had a lot of things made with wheat that are normally gluten free. Things are labeled but stuff is definitely cross contaminating. You can only eat here during the private tours and you would think they'd take the time to be more allergy friendly. Instead I cried three times that day, hated my life and wished for a peaceful death. What I did eat made me envy the freshness and flavor of my last hospital meal. The "fancy water" was good though. The Moulin Rouge restaurant is only available for people who do the VIP tour guide. This is the nicest restaurant in the park. It is a buffet where you can grab what you want. They have a person carving meat and another one making crêpes. There are also characters who come around and visit the tables. It also has a really nice atmosphere. The only problem is there is only two bathrooms, which is crazy. read more

I never realized that this was a restaurant at Universal Studios and one way to dine here would be to pay for the VIP Tour which we did to try it at Universal. At around 1pm our tour guide took us into the Moulin Rouge to have our all you can eat buffet style lunch for one hour. We were seated with our party only so that was nice. They have a good variety of foods for adults and kids. Their highlight would be the mushroom ravioli and salad bar which was fresh and looked/tasted great. The outdoor portion of the restaurant which is still covered overlooks the lower lot and the San Fernando Valley mountains which was stunning. Food itself wasn't bad for a buffet at a theme park. A separate review on the tour itself, but via that tour is the only way you can dine at Moulin Rouge. By far over the four day weekend this was our favorite meal at both the park and surrounding areas/Hilton hotel. This is listed as "a gourmet meal" and I concur that it was definitely a more upscale buffet style meal. The highlights of the food that I enjoyed were: Rosemary & Thyme Roasted Potato Garlic Potato Purée Mac & Cheese Roasted Carrots Meyer Lemon Ravioli I tend to stick to meat free meals, but my dad loved the carvery portion and my mom liked the fish options as well. We were all impressed, and quite frankly, I could easily do the VIP Tour again since this made for an amazing lunch to top off the day. Lastly, they do have some "character dining" where Dracula or perhaps other characters stop by. I thought that would be a nice touch for kids and even as adults we enjoyed the banter. This place is amazing! There's characters walking around, you can eat as much as you want, and everything tastes fantastic! You can only eat here if you have the VIP pass and you can only eat here for one meal, but it's definitely delicious. The seafood was pretty much amazing and if I ever end up here again I'll just load up on that. The street corn was way too salty so I didn't enjoy that. This is a great perk of purchasing the VIP Experience at Universal. While I think it's a bit of hyperbole to say 'gourmet meal,' Jim G. and I enjoyed what we had and the many variety of choices. There were a variety of salads, sides, mains, and desserts. Plenty of family-friendly foods, as well (like french fries, pizza, and chicken tenders). Some of the things we particularly enjoyed: tuna poke, chicken tikka masala, shrimp scampi, mushroom risotto, and many of the desserts such as the chocolate chip cookies (warm!), gingerbread cookie, apple crumble cheesecake (mini bite), and the coffee/cappuccino/etc machine. They also have water, lemonade, and soda. Thankfully our tour guide, Cassie V., told us they don't serve alcohol but that we can bring something in that we purchased elsewhere! Nice outdoor seating (but still covered) and fun to see some characters walking around and saying hello (Doc Brown and Dracula on our visit). The food was so good I wanted to eat here again for dinner. But you're only allowed to eat here once! I liked it. I liked the variety. It was more than I expected it. I drank too much water before coming in so I was full on water and didn't eat as much food as I would've liked. It was really good. As previously mentioned this is the "Exclusive VIP gourmet meal" that is part of the VIP experience at Universal Studios Hollywood. When you eat is dependent on when your tour is and when your guide made the reservations. But don't worry because you also have access to "light snacks and refreshments" and trust me you could probably fill up on that but don't because the food at the Moulin Rouge is actually really delicious. My tips are to watch the time since you only have an hour to eat and to leave room for dessert. read more

Let's start off with my disdain for buffets in general. The mediocre quality, the "it's been sitting under a heat lamp for 2 hours" and the "we've loaded it with fat and salt so it tastes good" options. I will pass! I walked in here with a preconceived notion on what I was getting into. I get to the buffet line and thought to myself this isn't the usual Mac & Cheese, Fried Chicken kinda place. The portions of food in the line were much smaller leading to a higher turnover and fresher food overall. At the end of the line there was a chef preparing Shrimp Scampi. I made my first plate headed over to the table not fully sold yet. The scampi was spot on, I also loaded up on what was labeled as Mexican Shrimp Salad. I had a few other sides that were surprisingly good as well. But I kept going back to the shrimp entrees. Chatting with the chef every time who talked about how he loved his job and couldn't be happier. It showed, after my third plate of the shrimp entrees I was contemplating one more plate. Just then the chef walked up and set down a steaming hot fresh plate of Scampi! The only thing stopping this place from getting all 5 stars was the shortage of dining room staff and the undersized tables. I've been here 3 times in the past two decades. Excellent foods and services. It's included into the Hollywood Universal Studios VIP Experience package and this is where they always take you during mid tour for the 1-hour lunch break. All tour guides stop here for lunch too. Absolutely loved everything about it. Every guest had the badge, so perhaps they only open to VIP Experience folks. Greeters are very inviting and friendly. Excellent customer service, entertaining staff members, delicious foods, beautiful decorations, indoor and outdoor dining available, plus the ambience was just amazing. Entertainers, such as Lucy from I Love Lucy, Dracula, and others will come walk around, ask you how you are doing, where you are from, and then spark other conversations with you while you are enjoying your foods. Wonderful experience with great times. Plenty of foods and drinks to choose from. Prosciutto wrapped around cantelope was yummy. Salmon, poke fish meat, and shrimps were all very fresh and tasty. Salads are lightly tossed. Choose your cheese and appetizers. Entrees and meats are different each time. They even had mini crepes here. Chocolate chip cookies are very soft and warm, fresh baked. Fresh fruits. Desserts are the best: cakes, tarts, pudding, mousse desserts, etc. Lots of potatoes and pizza slices. They have mainly small bites here, but that is plenty of delicious selections to enjoy and much better than foods sold outside or all around the amusement park. Comfortable seats and spacious. Restrooms are in-house or you can walk outside to use the public restrooms at a walking distance. What a perfect place inside the center of the Paris strip that stands out. Each time we come here, it's a very different and unique experience. Perfect lighting. Tables are romantic with the small vase of flowers. Very clean and organized. Highly recommended. Part of the VIP guest experience. So of course the staff will is completely caters to your every need. We got an hour to eat here before we got back on our tour. The food was amazing! The selection was great too. Be sure to ask for the ice cream, it's not posted on the buffet line but according to the chef the make it in-house. Love the lobster risotto! Also if you have a chance ask for outdoor seating with a view. You'll see the Hollywood sign and some of the studios below. read more
