I had reservations for dinner here on a Thursday night. I arrived a little early, so I just hung out by the bar at first. The bartender was real welcoming with some small talk, and they had a bunch of different craft brews on tap.
Ambiance: The place itself had a nice small and cozy atmosphere. It had a nice dim, intimate feel that would make for a good date spot. They had a few tables for smaller groups and then long communal tables for the majority of their seating. I felt a little too close to the couple next to us, so don't expect to have much privacy.
Service: Mott St. had some top notch service. Our server was super friendly and checked up on us very frequently. We were getting pretty full near the end of the meal and couldn't finish one of the dishes. When he saw a lot of leftovers, he was a little concerned and wanted to make sure we liked what we ordered, even though we were simply just too stuffed to finish it. It's nice to know that they cared that much to make sure we enjoyed our meal.
Food: Our server recommended that we order 2-3 dishes per person, and it definitely made sense once they started bringing them out, since many of the dishes were pretty small. I think the $$ label is a little misleading since most dishes are between $12 and $18 and you could easily spend $40/person.
General Tso's Lamb Sweetbreads - I'll be honest, I still don't even really know what sweetbreads are, but they were damn delicious haha. They had a super crispy texture and a nice orange flavored glaze on the outside. It reminded me of a fancy version of general tso's chicken. As I mentioned though, the plates were really small. This dish only came with like 5 pieces.
Calamari Bokum - This wasn't like the breaded and deep fried calamari that I'm used to ordering. Even though it didn't have the crunchy texture I was expecting, wow that sauce it was coated in was great. It had a really bold Asian stir fry type flavor. Maybe it's just me but the flavor of the sauce mixed with the tenderness of the calamari, I would've thought this was a lo mein type noodle dish. It came on top of a layer of crispy hash brown style potatoes. While I liked the potatoes by themselves, I thought it was kind of a weird pairing.
Kimchi stew - This was one of the bigger dishes we ordered. They gave a medium sized bowl of soup that was filled with cabbage, bacon, and small chunks of beef. The broth was so good that I literally could have drank it. It was a little on the salty side, but I loved the deep, smokey flavor of the broth. It paired perfect with the bacon in it.
Everything wings - This is like the wing version of an everything bagel. It was covered in sesame seeds and other types of garnishes. Even though a lot of places offer a similar flavored wing, I'll never get tired of that sticky, sweet and spicy sauce covered all over crispy chicken wings. This dish was pretty steep for the size though, since it only came with 3 wings
Stuffed cabbage - I usually exclusively order meat dishes at family style places like this, so I wouldn't expect to order a cabbage dish. But don't let the name fool you, there was plenty of meat in here. It was a really unique dish with layers of kimchi, rice, and tender shredded meat covered in some sort of rich, tangy orange sauce. The best part was the seared, crunchy top. Hands down the best dish of the meal. I actually wish they brought this dish out earlier so I wouldn't have been as full when I ate it.
Overall, I really enjoyed the unique spin to Asian inspired dishes. While it definitely can be pricey if you want to try a bunch of different dishes, every single thing we ordered was really delicious. It was a solid dinner. read more
