I had an amazing experience at the Motorcycle Safety School (5-2-2026 and 5-3-2026 courses) at Lehman College and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to learn or sharpen their riding skills. The entire staff was friendly, knowledgeable, personable, and professional from start to finish. They made the class feel welcoming, supportive, and well-organized. As a student, that makes a huge difference, especially when you are learning something that requires confidence, focus, and trust in the instructors. I especially want to call out Valentine and Neo. They were both excellent instructors and really helped make the experience worth it. Valentine was funny, charismatic, personable, and a great teacher. His instructions were clear, practical, and easy to follow, and he brought a great energy to the class. Neo was also incredibly knowledgeable and supportive, and together they helped create an environment where everyone felt comfortable learning. Did the 2 day practical course that results in a certificate that can be used for Motorcycle license. This course is hard, but the instructors are AMAZING. We had two very different instructors - Brandon (experienced teacher) and Neo (experienced rider) but both 100% committed to making safe riders. Helped us one on one and helped us close our gaps (mine - test anxiety and SWERVING!). The group bonded and cheered each other on. I know I will remember things for the rest of my life - don't cover the clutch! No brake or clutch in a curve. Heads up and look through the curve. The bikes were good and had a good range. Not sure why it says California I am from NYC lol Anyway I had never ridden a motorcycle in my life, so I decided to sign up for a private lesson before starting the Basic Rider Course (BRC). My private lesson was with Esteban, and he was fantastic! Esteban showed me the basics--everything from where the controls are on the bike to practicing "power rocking" and "walking," which is all about finding the friction zone. In just a couple of hours, I went from zero experience to confidently using the throttle to ride in a straight line. The very next day, I started the BRC with Ali as my instructor. There were only six of us in the class, which made it feel more personal and relaxed. November is a quieter time, so it was a perfect setting for focused learning. Ali is an amazing instructor--super knowledgeable and clearly passionate about motorcycles. He guided us through riding in a straight line, S-turns, U-turns, and even taught us swerving techniques and switching into second gear, which were both super helpful. We did a bunch of laps around the course and practiced the figure 8 and U-turn exercises. Ali was patient and encouraging, but also stern when he needed to be, which kept us focused and motivated. He had great tips for all of us. On the final day, we had Ed, who was also fantastic. He helped tie everything together from the previous day's lessons and prepared us for the skills test. I made a few small mistakes on the test (putting my foot down during the figure 8 and not going fast enough for the quick stop), but I still passed and earned the motorcycle license! I think I wrote a review before but I wanted to add something bc I've done about 1000 miles since I took the class. The one thing that kept coming up about my riding was keeeping my head up and looking and turning my head in the direction I want to go. I have to say it's something I consistently repeat in my head when I see a curve coming up on any hwy. I'm sure there are other things I learned that are now second nature like the fri toon zone and controlling it properly. I would recommend to anyone to continue to practice slow speed exercises. I know I need to but that where things tend to go wrong. Not the hwy. ride safe everyone and keep two wheels on the ground. read more

EDITED to add: I did not take this class at Lehman College (looks like the business address was changed after I reviewed) I took the 2.5 day version of the Basic Rider Course (BRC) a couple of weeks ago and the day after I passed the course, I became a fully licensed motorcylist. The location isn't TOO bad - about a 5-10min walk from several bus and subway stops, easy to find - there's a large empty lot for riding (the range), and a double-wide trailer for the classroom (ignore the shaking from the trains passing by), getting out of the sun, lunch, bathroom (there's also a porta-potty outside), etc. I purposely arrived early for all sessions - we were warned that if we arrived late, we would not be able to continue - ESPECIALLY for the riding portions. They limit the classes to 12 students so that the range isn't overloaded and they can give everyone enough attention - our class ranged from young (18ish, I'd say) to older (50's), and I was the only female - we had 2 scooter and 10 motorcycle students, but one guy didn't show up past Friday night. Our instructors were great - Monica (Holmes - I believe there are 2 Monicas), Ed, and Dan - there were always 2 instructors on the range with us (sometimes a 3rd would join) and 1 in the classroom. There was a 2 day class going on at the same time as our 2.5 day class - we were on the range while they were in the classroom, and vice versa. Monica started us off on Friday evening with the classroom portion - not exactly the most exciting material, but safety/logistics material that needs to be covered - there's a fair amount of video watching involved in the classroom portion to make sure all the requisite material is covered. The next morning, we geared up - long pants, long sleeves, over-the-ankle boots, helmets and eye protection - then hopped on some hogs on the range with Dan and Ed (they have Suzuki GZ250/TU250x motorcycles and Kymco scooters, in case you were wondering). We reviewed and expanded on several things we learned in the classroom portion - spent a lot of time in the friction zone and learning various methods and skills - how to start, stop, turn...we even got up into 3rd gear! It was pretty darn cold at first, but kind of nice to be outside once it warmed up :) It was back in the classroom for the afternoon - and at the end of the afternoon, we took our written test - if you pay attention in the classroom portions, the test with be a piece of CAKE. Sunday brought more new skills - U-turn boxes, swerves, more turns and stops - and then we got to take our on-bike test - although several of us were nervous, most of the class passed (one person dropped his bike, which is an automatic fail, but I'm guessing he has since re-taken and passed the test), and we walked away with our BRC card in hand, smiles on our faces (I even saw a classmate at the DMV the next day!). Overall the class was great - I wish we spent more time on the bikes - I started to LOVE the feeling! Oh well, guess I have to get one of my own now ;) read more

I cannot recommend this school more. I took the BASIC RIDER COURSE 2 - LICENSE WAIVER, as I already had some experience riding my Vespa. The skills I learned in this class have been crucial for rising in the city, such as low-speed handling (perfect for start and stop traffic), and how to safely avoid road obstacles, turn quickly or fast break (when cars, bike, or pedestrians come out of nowhere). The instructors were kind, patient and helped us individually. I always remember Yoda's tips, sit up straight, relax your shoulders, look up and smile because you're riding a motorcycle :D I passed my road test waiver, got my license shortly after, and a discount on my insurance. Registration with MSS is really easy, as there's an online form to do so. There are multiple locations, but the Bronx one is the closest to me that still offers motorcycle lessons and not scooter ones. Two days ago, I had my first private lesson to learn how to ride a motorcycle at the Bronx location. It's in a kinda shady neighborhood, but I walked around with my bagel and juice and I felt OK. Steve was my instructor's name, and he was very patient and was able to put me at ease. He started with the basic controls, and then I hopped on the bike and he went over a couple more basic things. We worked a lot on clutch control and just walking the bike and finding the engagement point on the clutch. By the end, I was able to pick both feet up and to stop normally using both brakes. I got another lesson on 5/31 with a different instructor (Fred). The chemistry between myself and Fred wasn't the same as it was with Steve and I, but I still learned a lot. I am now able to do slow speed turns without putting my feet down in a relatively small radius. I finished up my Basic Rider Course and what a treat it was. June, Ray and Antonio were amazing instructors and taught me so much in these three days. We started on Friday 6/6 with classroom instruction and theory. Saturday 6/7 in the morning was spent on the bikes. I felt like a natural after only a short period of time. The afternoon of Saturday was spent in the classroom (thank goodness because it was 106 outside). Sunday morning was the last portion of the class and Sunday afternoon was our road tests. I passed my road test and just recently got my lisence waiver in the mail. I highly recommend MSS if you're wanting to learn how to ride. I just purchased my first bike, a 2003 Ninja 500R. read more

To start this off, I took this course about a year or two ago. My experience with them was great. The location I picked was the Mott Haven one. I had three instructors. Ray would be the main one and the other two sometimes took alternating shifts or were there together. When I arrived we sat down in the I think trailer office. The class was given a booklet for the course. We took sometime and went over some basic material for motorcycles. The instructors also took a survey of how people got there. They also inquired about if people ever took lessons and/or rode a motorcycle. He did tell us that people do fail this course, but the instructors try to help everyone pass. In my class I think we had about twelve people. Age range of my classmates was from 18 to 50. There were about as many girls as there were guys. I could be forgetting something, but next came the outdoor experience ! If you brought your own helmet good, if not you had to borrow one from them. I had to borrow one and buy a bandana to put on my head. Kind of embarrassing because I had to ask the instructor how to tie it lol. I personally suggest people that do not have any experience to at least take one lesson before they do this course. They do go over everything starting from the basics. But I felt overwhelmed as I never did this before. I messed up a lot trying to listen to the instructions and remember where certain controls were. They will lecture you if you do something wrong and compliment you if you do a good job. Only one person failed in my class. It was because she dropped the motorcycle twice and could not really maintain balance. I think she bumped into another classmate as well lol. I personally believe she was given enough chances and any more would be a hazard to the rest of the class. We move in a line and if she goes down while we are in motion, the rest of the line might go down as well. The instructors go through everything on the test. They will tell you this. The best way to prep for the test was to do the test. I have ridden a bicycle all my life and I believe that is what helped me pass. The one thing that people might not understand is counter steering. When they explained it, I had no clue. But I realized it that I do it on my bicycle, just that I never knew it was called counter steering. I will not get into because I can not explain things very well and do not want to confuse anyone. After all that was done and over, test day came. We all lined up behind each other and off we went. After road test, we went inside to test the paper test. Finally after that the instructors told us if we passed or not. I did not realize this but while we were taking their road test, the instructors were taking notes. They explained to all of us where we could have done better and why that score was given. Now on a side note. The motorcycles they provided us are great for " short " people. So if you are tall, you might feel a bit cramped on it. You will have a break for lunch. The instructors were great. They are extremely supportive and funny. You'll feel comfortable from the start as you learn the general operation of a motorcycle and some of the basic maneuvers needed when driving on the road. So much better then dealing with the DMV! Much faster, Much Easier and you definitely get your mothers worth! i purchased my bike a month before i took this course and got into 2 bad slips with it! Bike is still fine but got alot of cosmetic work need to be done! If i had taken the course my bike would probably still be in perfect sexy condition! But you live and you learn! I took the 2 1/2 days schedule, M, T and W. half riding/ half in class! In class you pretty much learn the basics and all the safety rules! You go through a written exam which pretty much takes common sense and ofcourse basic knowledge of riding! Dont worry its quiet easy! On the 3rd day you practice more on your riding and then you take the skills evaluation test! I passed! they go by a 0 pt perfect score// 21 pt failing system! meaning if you screw up on any of the skills tests given to you they mark it! by adding points! my score was a 6 cuz i screwed up on the box( my weakness) dropped my foot down twice (5 pts) and stopped a foot longer on my quick stop (1 pt) Either way i did well! and my whole class pretty much passed! So if you have no idea how to ride or if you want to get the license quick and easy while learning some things you may not have known before! MSS is right for you! they have a few locations and the trainers and coaches really help you alot! and they honestly all want you to pass! Take it from me! this is good for the money! I highly recommend the course if you want to learn how to ride properly. I took the 2 day basic rider course, besides from waking up super early it was well worth my time to learn the techniques. The course involves a morning classroom section and a afternoon riding section. It helps to study the concept then performing it on the lot. The instructors are super nice and made it fun. They're all veteran riders and kept a relaxed environment. My instructors were Steve and Monica, they both are wonderful at teaching and encouraging us to do well on each riding exercise with tips. For our final evaluation Ray took over for Steve, but he's also nice and helpful. It's also great that the instructors are not breathing down your back to pressure you to master each exercise. As you continue to ride throughout the day you begin to realize what to improve on. Unless you are struggling then they will step in and help. If you are really struggling then they will counsel out. They also recommend a private lesson if you want some experience before hand. It might help you feel more comfortable if you have never ridden a motorcycle before. read more

I took the 2.5 day Basic Rider Course to get my road test waiver this past March. I think there were 12 of us in the class, with skills ranging from "never been on a motorcycle" to "been riding for years without a license." (Other statistics: two of us were women; ages ranged from ~20 to 60+; and at the end of the course, two people did not receive their road test waivers.) (NOTE: according to the instructors, if you "fail" and don't get your waiver, you are allowed to take the skills test one more time at no additional cost.) Jason was an amazing instructor out on the range: super patient, explained the different lessons and techniques very clearly, and provided great feedback. You develop a great sense of comraderie with the other students, which helps when you're feeling nervous. The course isn't cheap, but if you just want to get your license quickly and without too much hassle, and if you want to start off with a solid understanding of basic safety principles, MSS is definitely the way to go. read more

Prior to taking the 2 day BRC last week in the Bronx, I took a private lesson with the MSS. I would recommend this to anyone who has no motorcycle experience and wants to be able to get the most out of the class. The two days were super fun, using a combo of classroom and riding instruction with great instructors (Antonio, Josh, Adam) who were knowledgeable, helpful, encouraging and supportive. Classmates were very diverse. After passing the written test and skills evaluation, I received my DMV waiver and got my Class M license the next day. If you want to learn to ride safely, this class is a must. Overall an awesome experience! read more

I've personally never riden a real motorcycle before. I decided I wanted to get a motorcycle in the city and thought some classes would be my best bet. I put it off for a while because of the high price and I was worried that the class it self would be quick and pointless and that I would learn nothing. That was 100% not the case. After only 2 1/2 days in the class room and on a bike I left with what i feel is a pretty full knowledge of the basics of how to operate a motorcycle and how the bike itself functions. Even after never riding a motorcycle, I now feel comfortable taking my bike out on the road, even in NYC. Fantastic experience. I can't say enough about MSS. I have wanted to get my motorcycle license since I was a teenager and I finally decided to just do it some twenty years later after seeing students practicing in the Lehman College parking lot throughout the summer months. So, with some trepidation, I finally signed up for my class that was held over three days in September. The training is intense and can be a bit intimidating, but the MSS staff make you feel at ease. They are knowledgeable, thorough, and all have a good sense of humor. And while they can also be stern at times, they really want you to learn, so that by the time you are finished midday on Sunday, you are prepared to dip your toe in on the real streets and begin riding.
