Visited Motor City Java House this weekend with a writing group. I noshed on lemon pound cake that was zesty and sweet moist and delicious. I also ordered chai tea with caramel flavoring that was quite good. I've never had flavored chai tea before, and was pleasantly surprised. The menu is filled with lots of different options to choose from including cookies, pastries, soup, and sandwiches, cakes, coffee drinks, teas, and other refreshments. There's a little of a bit of something for everyone. The artwork on the walls is both warm and bright, making the creative space inviting and inspiring. Lots of the paintings are for sale. Check out the posted signage if something catches your eye. You can't tell from the outside, but the cafe is a generous size with seating for varying party sizes. It's perfect for solo time, co-working, and meetings with other creatives. There's a small stage for performances and presentations. Years ago, I would attend events in the huge space behind the cafe building. The cafe is owned by Motor City Blight Busters which is still thriving and helping the community. I love this shop. I don't drink coffee but they do have other things (tea, smoothies, sweets). I got a smoothie. I asked the young man to surprise me and WOW! he did. We called my smoothie "The Mikki." The atmosphere was wonderful. He took the group I met on a tour. The whole place is wonderful. I love the outdoor spaces. I will definitely go back. read more

I've been to the Motor City Java House twice. Both times, the family and employees have made me feel at home. It is a warm environment and when live music is available, it is outstanding. Motor City Java House is a huge breath of fresh air in Detroit. A coffee shop 10 years in the making, I discovered. The owner, Alicia, has been working on opening this spot and renovating it that many years with a local nonprofit called "Blightbusters" which works to revitalize neighborhoods in Detroit that need it. How can you not want to support a spot like that? They've got great coffee--free trade and otherwise (bonus!), fantastic little snacks here and there, and they also do fruit smoothies! Hurrah! The space itself is really large and separated into two rooms--one with some tables near the counter and the other with a homier vibe to it. A great fireplace mantel, couches, and other comfy seating for more relaxed get togethers and work stuff. It's the perfect place to set up shop and work on your own, or pop in with a group of friend for a beverage or two and conversation (perhaps before a movie at the Redford Theatre a couple of doors down?). They're affiliated with the Artist's Village next door where they host great events like open mic poetry evenings and chess competitions. The decor is funky and colorful with lots of great art and sculptures to be found both inside and out. I just love this place and I can't wait to see what else they bring to the community! read more

Motor City Java House is a lovely place to spend a Saturday afternoon. Owner and Barista, Alicia, makes every visitor feel at home. Not only did the gracious Alicia cheerily help us wipe up our unfortunate spill, she also spent a 1/2 hour with our group giving us the grand tour of the place and the connected Artist Village. The copper ceilings pair perfectly with the golden and apple walls, giving the place a homey feeling. The coffee is tasty and the bakery, made right next door, is yummy! Right down the block is the Redford Theater. We will be back soon to take in an old-timey movie and sip some java. Thanks, Alicia! read more

I love a good independent coffee shop, and I had been meaning to come here since last week. Now that I'm working again, I'm on this side of town on the regular. I found this place via yelp on my smart phone and thought I'd check it out. I admit, if I didn't know it was there, it was easy to pass by. I'm not all that familiar with this part of town, but dang, this place is AWESOME! Totally cool, fun with enough drinks to keep most people happy. This place was hoppin! Detroit blight busters were meeting inside, several people were in there meeting and hanging out, but quiet enough that you could read (like I did) drink a cup of coffee and get yourself together before the day starts. Place has plenty of seating, from long tables to two tops to 4 tops as well. Plenty of room to spread out without having to sit on top of one another, which is great. I ended up getting a mocha, which was delicious. Sadly, I deducted a star because they don't have a single thing to eat besides biscotti. Where's the bagels and light snacks? I wanted to grab some food, but sadly they didn't have anything. I asked the guy about it, but I couldn't understand what he was saying because he was talking really quietly. I'm not mad about it, but maybe sell some bagels or something! Overall, this place is a gem. Clean bathrooms, guy behind the counter was friendly and helpful, and overall a real nice place to go hang out at. The place is well decorated..they aren't trying to hard but it's not to understated as well. Seems to be a big meeting place for this side of town, and I'm happy that places like this are around. It's like starbucks meet soulfood... There's laugher going back and forth between the employee and customer; everyone is smiling. Ok -- I'm not a coffee or tea drinker like that. (Really not at all!) This place isn't just a coffee shop but a place where poetry can be spoken on Saturday which is BYOB (shh!) -- cover charge of course! It's also bringing life back to the communities instead going out far or even downtown. You have to spread the love everywhere. Motor City Java House is also very active in the community -- cleaning up the streets, planting trees, and teaching the young ones chess. I enjoyed my visit which I did have a chocolate chip muffin. This is a coffee place for real people, people who dare to venture into communities they thought were long dead only to find a resurgence led by wonderful places like this. This place has nice, simple coffee drinks and baked goods that seem to be unaffected by the "if SB can sell it for that much, we can too" attitude of most hip coffee spots. Not only is it a joy to speak with the workers, the Java House is set up so you can actually speak with people who are drinking their favorite beverage. It's quiet and very friendly. You won't find the aloof attitude associated with some shops here. And as others have mentioned, there are huge aspirations for this area. Aside the beautiful Redford Theater being next door, there are great places for the locals to hang, enjoy spoke word performances, play chess, and enjoy music. You must try Motor City Java House and take a look at a revival that's being done right. read more

First off, being a part of the Detroit Blight Busters goes in the win column. To that, I'll add that this place is in a great location for me - only about a block from the church where I work. Their coffee and espresso are exactly what you'd hope for. Smooth, not too harsh, and fairly priced. A shot of espresso is $0.75!!!! It's a very nice place to hang out and chat with a friend. With plenty of room to spread out, you can stay awhile if you like. And while you're there, stop by the table that provides anything you'd want to know about the other local businesses. This is an amazing place. The coffee is fantastic..and on weekends they make omelets to order, and waffles. A chess club for kids was there on a Saturday, with seriously dedicated young players. The location is accessible from I-96 and from the Southfield freeway. I commute from Ann Arbor to Detroit and I'm definitely going to make this a regular stop on my route. I stopped at the Motor City Java House for the first time today. My coworker and I were looking for a place to have lunch between work sites. Yelp led me to this cozy little shop, where the food is fresh, the coffee is lovely, and the owner and staff are friendly as can be. The current menu is limited, but the owner said she has more plans in the works. All of the baked goods are made in-house and most of their offerings are organic. Their prices are reasonable too. This place is easy to miss if you aren't looking for it, but keep your eyes open for the basketball player chained to the tree out front. read more
