Their English is not great, but they are really nice and they will figure it out. The staff is just super nice and the area is gated with a guard. If you need anything for your room they will help you. I never checked to see if they have Wi Fi. If that is important to you make sure you call and ask. Have fun.

Now, with that in mind, I'll delve further into my 4 stars... This place is like the cougar of hotels - it may not be shiny, beautiful and crisp but Hotel Nelson knows what it's doing and it gets the job done. Hotel Nelson as been around since the 1950's and it shows. It shows in the elevator that makes you wonder if you'd have preferred to take the stairs. It shows in the tile in the bathrooms and the squeak in the floor through the hallways. It shows in the dark bar on the first floor and the paint that is layered upon layer through out the building. The entire hotel has a lot of charm. Here I am using the word "charm" to replace: history, dated, well lived in, and borderline dingy. On a recent trip to TJ, we tried 5 other hotels on Revolution that are more highly regarded by locals only to find none of them had rooms available and ending up at Hotel Nelson. The hotel is in a great location right near the Arc de Tijuana and is easy to navigate to from the border, or back to the border after sleeping off some beers. Hotel room: The keys for the rooms that aren't occupied are held in cubbies behind the front counter just like in old movies. A single queen bed with a table, chair, local cable TV and bathroom is $40 USD for one night. The paint on the walls isn't in the best condition, the windows are single pane so you can hear everything from the street and the toilet may or may not clog at any given moment. However, for a place right on Revolution Ave for a last minute bed when you decide you'd rather have a few more beers than cross over back to the US, I couldn't ask for any more. The staff speaks limited English but you could probably manage to get a room so long as you're not too drunk to be polite and read the limited signs in English. My budding Spanish skills and the friendly staff have made it work easily for me on several occasions. After you pay your bucks (they take card too) you will be escorted up to your room by hotel staff. They will hand over your keys, a trash bag filled with fresh toilet paper, towels for the shower and two small bars of soap before leaving you to check out your view from the window. You can hear mariachis, crowds and cars late into the night and again in the morning. I love being woken up by mariachi horns, but you may not agree, so keep this in mind. Hotel Bar: The bar has very clear signs to prohibit smoking, but even though they are pictographs and don't require translation to any language, they don't seem to work. That's Mexico for ya. Caguamas (32oz bottles of beer) run a few dollars each and if you get a star on your receipt you get a free drink. I haven't had the mixed drinks, but they have a full bar if you're not into Mexican beers. I've talked a bit with some of the patrons but the bartenders don't seem to have the same conversational skills, or at least the desire to speak to Americans. No worries though, the service is prompt and they can work with you if your Spanish is limited. The bathrooms are typical for TJ and reasonably clean and stocked with TP and paper towels. Hotel Restaurant: Breakfast of an omelet with beans and potatoes, chilaquiles (for me) and two beers was $13 USD with a great view of tourists and mariachis on the street. Service was prompt, beers cold and my food was delicious. The sauce on the chilaquiles alone makes me want to head back. I look forward to checking out their other menu items on my next stay. This isn't the Holiday Inn, but if you don't have the patience (or maybe stomach) for some good old Mexican culture, there's one a taxi ride away. Expect to pay more than double what Hotel Nelson will run ya.

Wanted to check in at lobby and got very confused because as I open the door, it looked like a cafe and thought I was going into the wrong place! The staff was helpful but could only issue one key which was fine and it was a very easy check in process. Upon getting into my room, it was not very spacious but it was me new, neat, comfortable, and had all the basic necessities. The only thing that could be better is the TV quality, it's 720p with no HD. The breakfast downstairs was one of the better ones, eggs, beans, yogurt, cereal, and 24/7 coffee, cappuccino, and hot chocolate! Summary - I was not expecting much but this went past my expectations for the price paid.

It's quiet, except when they're doing construction in the day. The stay comes with breakfast (7-10am) and there's a coffee machine and an ice machine available all day. I really liked the breakfast. It's a small spread, but the food was good. There was oatmeal, pancakes, scrambled eggs, beans, nacho chips, papaya and pastries. The room is alright. Mine did not have a window to the outside (it was facing the hallway), a little stuffy, but it was bearable. The hotel looks pretty new; it feels minimalistic in an Ikea kind of way. The power went out for 45 min or so on the first day I was there; but that's probably outside the hotel's control.

The employees were rude and unwelcoming from the beginning, but I brushed it off because everyone has bad days. Then I got to the 5th floor. The elevator doors opened and I swear I had accidentally selected "Hell" instead of the 5th floor. The entire hallway smelled HORRIBLE fishy, musty, and some other smell I can't even identify. And it wasn't just one spot. The whole floor smelled like this. Looking back, that was obviously my sign to ask for another room. Naturally, I ignored it. I get into my room and immediately notice the towels. They weren't literally black, but they were so dark, stiff, and worn-looking that they looked like they'd been through several generations of guests. Then I see the beds. I've stayed here before, so I know what the rooms are normally like. My previous rooms had much bigger, fluffier beds and were significantly nicer overall. This room felt like it belonged to a completely different hotel. The bathroom was ugly, the room was disappointing, and the entire floor smelled like something had died. And somehow, I still didn't take the hint. So I ordered room service. I ordered one Alfredo pasta and two different soups. The Alfredo was so unbelievably salty that I couldn't even taste the cheese. One of the soups was also so salty that I could barely taste anything besides salt. Then came the second soup. I put my spoon in and felt what seemed like little particles at the bottom. I pulled the spoon out and there was a ridiculous amount of what appeared to be sugar on it. And yes, I tasted it. It was sugar. At this point I wasn't eating at a hotel anymore. I was apparently participating in a culinary social experiment. I went downstairs and asked for a refund. They offered to remake the food, but it was late, I was exhausted, and I absolutely did not want another meal from that kitchen. One of the employees actually tasted the food and agreed that the soup was extremely sugary and said I should get a refund. And yet they still refused. Apparently, if I had paid with cash, they could refund me but because I paid by card, suddenly a refund was impossible. Make that make sense.

Today there were eggs with pieces of hot dog, refried bean [and they were very good] long with quesadillas and two kinds of sauces [red and green]. There was also some chips and cheese to top off the beans. On the other side there were pan dulce, toast, fruits and many other items as well as two types of juice and coffee machine that makes coffee, Americano's, espresso, lattes and even more things that I do not remember. The parking garage is below the hotel with security so it's very safe.

We looked at different hotels around the area and they were all booked the Taxista took us to this spot, I wasn't expecting much and just wanted a clean bed to sleep in. The rooms are small, with all the usual amenities, plush bed, and space is utilized well.  Staff is very friendly, attentive.  There is a really awesome bar with indoor outdoor seating and the chef/bartender Miguel  great stories and life experiences from his world travels he's willing to share. Drinks were good but a bit expensive.   If you are a couple who want to be in the downtown TJ area to experience nightlife, this might be the place for you.  However, the hotel doesn't have its own parking, as it is off-site, not oriented for families or those who have difficulties moving around or in need of ramps.
