They opened up when I was in HS and we didn't have any sushi places in my town so it was very exciting and they have really transformed from a good place to top notch! They have sushi artists. Not just people behind a counter making rolls. And their special rolls like the Fuji Roll and Ninja Roll are so thought out bringing you great combinations of flavors and textures! This place has become a staple in our rotation. The food is very consistently good. The staff is extremely friendly, helpful and accommodating. We typically order here once or twice a week. Grandparents love the sushi/ sashimi combo. Rolls are great too. The surprise dish we discovered recently (and thus my review) is the spicy seafood udon. It's a nice play on a very popular Korean/ Chinese noodle dish called champon and udon. Be careful, if you ask for spicy, it will knock most people out. We typical get one spicy udon soup to share (in addition to everyone's order). I love everything about this restaurant. You will not get better sushi in NJ - this place is phenomenal. Not only is the staff friendly, the food is always amazing. You will also not find another hand roll like the deep fried salmon handroll, it's truly one of a kind and a MUST get. (They do give you a free one but one just isn't enough). Even though this is primarily a take out place, there are some tables and seating at a sushi bar. You might have to wait to get a table....I was able to sit at the sushi bar by myself. Service was friendly and the prices are on the moderate side. Fish was average quality, nothing special really, on par with other restaurants in the area, although there are others with much better quality fish. Spicy tuna and salmon rolls are delicious. Charging a dollar for a bag of tea is a bit ridiculous though. It should be free, unless it was loose gamatcha or other expensive tea. The best thing about this place is that they give you a free handroll while you wait to pick up your order or if your at the sushi bar. This is a very traditional Japanese thing to do, and it brings me back to a place every time. It's like getting a $5 coupon! read more

This would be nowhere close to the best sushi you've had in your life nor is it worth traveling for, but it's good for what it is, which is the "local sushi joint" that delivers. I would cry if I had a sushi joint back home that delivers. Anyhow, the SO and I ended up here after 6 or so hours of driving in a dangerous slush storm on I-87 from Montreal. The menu is quite extensive and can get overwhelming- I did not count but I swear there were about 40 roll combinations to choose from in addition to a full page of donburi and bentos, another of udons and appetizers. I tend to go for more "classic" dishes when I try a place for the first time to make sure I have a safe bet (ie: hard to mess up) and ordered an eel donburi. I was pleasantly surprised that the eel bowl came with avocado, but not so much about the surprise bonito seasoning layer beneath the eel. I'm rather particular about when and how I eat bonito and I didn't like it in this dish- it overpowered the eel flavor. The sushi rice was also a tad too wet for which made me glad I didn't order real sushi because mediocre rice is a deal breaker for me. I was pleased the dish was not drowned in eel sauce like many other places. The miso soup was quite standard, nothing my call home about and the salad dressing was on the bland side, with only iceberg lettuce (made me glad I didn't order a la carte and dish the 4 or so dollars for a salad.) The server offered salmon skin hand rolls on the house at the end of dinner service which is quite generous of them. Once again, nothing really to squeal about but I don't knock free food. Overall they're pretty a run of the mill sushi joint and I can see where locals would love this place but for the rest of us, don't break your pelvis scrambling off the interstate for this one. read more

Plus, if you dine in during dinner, they offer diners a complimentary hand roll at the end of their meals, which is absolutely delicious and super flavorful from their special house sauce. Good sushi- felt portions are a little small. Rolls are a little on the small side on our takeout order . Lunch bentos were good but also portioned a bit small. Ordered delivery from here Friday night. Ordered at 4:30 with a 5:30 delivery time. I ordered edamame and chicken tempura app, to share with my dinner guests and then for our entrees we ordered two udon noodle bowls, one sensai and one nabeyaki. Let me start with the apps, the edamame was perfectly cooked and they were slightly salty and had a nice pop to them. The chicken tempura was 4 to a portion and they were fried to a crisp with a great soy based dipping sauce. Both will be ordered again, now onto the entrees. The bowls we shared as well. The sensai was full of veggies and the broth was flavorful and not overly salty. The noodles were there but let the veggies shine. The nabeyaki bowl was also flavorful and the shrimp that was included in it was the size of a baby's arm and just as flavorful. The food arrived on time, as requested and was hot and filling. Everything including delivery and tip was 45 dollars. I found my new favorite local sushi house. read more

Looking for a good sushi place in the area this place came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. Upon pulling up it did not look like much more like a typical Chinese take out. But the food here came through! The assortment of rolls here made it very hard to choose! I went with a few different rolls to try out. I made a safe choice with a spicy yellowtail roll, a chefs special roll know as the Mexican roll and the spicy shrimp tempura roll! We watched the sushi Chef hard at work! You can tell upon first both the fish was fresh and the rice was packed on perfectly! The avocado was tasty as well and snuck its way onto most of our rolls! The only downside was the amount of tempura flakes that were on the plate! It took away from the beautiful presentation but the taste could not be hidden! I wish I had a stellar review for this place, because I had such high hopes after reading everyone else's review. My parents live in the area and I figured we should try something new. After this, we will be going back to Masa and Tawara. I'll start with the fact that we walked in and the place reeked of nail polish remover from the salon next door. Not very appetizing. Probably should've taken that as a sign. The waitress came over after we sat down and must've come by every minute after to see if we were ready but was more annoying than attentive. I'll say that the food was tasty and the fish was fresh. The only thing is that I think they put vinegar sauce in the soy sauce container on the table, because that sure didn't taste like soy to me. Also, the food didn't come to the table at the same time, so me and my mom were sitting there with our entrees while Dad waited for another 5-10 minutes. Awkward. On another note, if you like anything outside the shrimp/tuna/salmon/yellow tale/eel spectrum then go elsewhere. No squid or shellfish to be seen, don't know why I even bothered asking for Uni... Wishful thinking? The kicker had to be when we ordered green tea ice cream for dessert... And our check came before dessert... then the dessert came with three plastic spoons! When the waitress brought us the ice cream she literary almost threw it on the table and didn't even bother moving things out of the way so that the three of us could share it. You may be thinking "this girl was probably a snob to the waitress" but I swear I try to be understanding about everything... I've been to great restaurants and not so great ones. My girlfriend and I decided to order sushi here one night. We went to the place to pick up our order and as we walked in we could tell the workers were cleaning up. We got there 10 minutes before they closed. Instead of giving us bad looks like any other place would do to customers who come in before closing they gave my girlfrind and I free hand rolls.
