I'm not going rate them a one star because I've tried other foods and it's okay. But I ordered a chicken noodle soup today that tasted similar to a Chinese soup. It was super greasy with no potatoes or carrots like a regular Cuban chicken noodle soup recipe would have. It only had a couple pieces of shredded chicken, chicken fat, and noodles. Like the couple of out-of-town suckers that we are (were), we headed to this location of Morro Castle rather than the one that would have been much easier to access and explore around from MIA Int'l Airport. No matter. The food and experience of eating here fresh off the plane and straight out of the airport (rental car counter) was just what I needed before a quick trip out of town towards Islamorada. Plenty of specials on offer. In fact, due to me being up as early as about 3:30 AM that morning for the flight, I was craving lunch and therefore spied that part of the menu. The daily special sounded great and I ordered it. The lovely older woman behind the counter was quick to ask if I meant the lunch or breakfast special. It was only about 10:00 AM. A huge plate of pounded steak served up with onions, rice, black beans and sweet plantains = about $6.50 (don't quote me, but it was cheap). The cafe con leche was served up in separate vessels- something else that I didn't see anywhere else. A mug- filled with hot milk, and a side container (kind of looks like a metal container for syrup) with hot, sugar-laced espresso. You do the "con" part by putting them together and can regulate the strength of your drink by pouring as much coffee as you want in your mug. This way of serving it became my preference, though not the standard in my experiences. The diner-style set up might be used to all sorts of orders at all times of the day. I'd be willing to bet on it. Very casual, comfortable, and from what I ended up learning in my week in south Florida- about as quick as you can expect. My wife ordered a Cuban sandwich- which was good. Perhaps it is the unaccustomed non-Cuban in me, but I'd have liked it with more pickles. Over all, this would be a place I'd really enjoy if I lived around there. Very cheap, tasty and accessible food; friendly, yet not at all overbearing service. read more

I really, really like the Cuban sandwiches here. So much that I was willing to drive 20 miles at night to get one, from North Miami Beach :) Luckily this place stays open late. I definitely try to stop here whenever I'm in Miami. I like the cubano, and the Helena (I can't remember if that's the name, but it has cream cheese and jelly in it). Some of the sandwiches have some fried diced potato in it, and I don't particularly like that, but everything here is pretty good overall! read more

Morro Castle is one of the best and most authentic Cuban restaurants in South Florida. Yeah, sure, most of the time the Cuban women serving us have an attitude but it adds to the charm! You can't expect five star service in the middle of Hialeah. The Cuban bread with butter they bring out must be sprinkled with crack. It's as simple as that and it's just so damn good! I always get the palomilla steak with onions and cilantro with white rice and black beans. A nice, simple Cuban plate done perfectly. The steak is as thin as a sheet of paper and a lot of the times the meal doesn't fill me up (This girl knows how to eat though). The white rice is perfect and fluffy. I also occasionally eat the frita and it is delicious! Their chicken tenders and burgers are also a great choice! It may be 2015, but Morro Castle stillllll doesn't accept credit cards. They do have an ATM though which charges you an organ or first-born child, but for this food, it's worth it. read more

It's very good Cuban cuisine on the cheap, especially the Cubano (which is like a hamburger with fried potato sticks) and the Bistec con Arroz y frijoles (which is the steak with white rice and black beans), which is their daily special and I believe its still about $6.99. The steak was seasoned very well, moist, and above all flavorful. The only issue with my steak meal and the reason for the one star reduction was that meat was served a bit cold along with the rice and beans, and they seemed to have just popped the thing right into the microwave to heat it up after we told our server that it was cold. I also had their mammey milkshake, which I didn't really like that much because there were still large chunks of ice in it and it wasn't very well mixed (it was very watery and I expected the shake to be a bit more firm). Their churros are also very good as well and the service here is really, really friendly (though some of them can't speak English quite well, but they really do try and that is much appreciated). Morro Castle is a staple Cuban restaurant in Hialeah. It has been there for decades and the staff has been pretty consistent throughout that timeframe as well. Compared to other Cuban restaurants in the area, I would say this is the one I would suggest people try, based on consistent good food and historic value. The menu includes all the typical Cuban delicacies from Cuban sandwiches to entrees like bistec palomilla with rice, beans and plantains, all for very economic prices. Overall, the food is good and the service is OK. Nothing outstanding about either. The place could also use a face lift, but its old school, well-worn look is pretty nostalgic because of the time it has been around. Their take out is also pretty efficient. read more

When one is hispanic, they tend to judge hispanic restaurants pretty harshly. Morro Castle makes it to my list of great hispanic restaurants, mainly because of the breakfast. If you are looking for cheap breakfast thats in the heart of every hispanic household, this place does it right! Imagine this: ham, eggs, tostada and cafe con leche (coffee) all for roughly 4 dollars. If thats not amazing I dont know what is! The only down side: they dont take credit or debit cards. Read the Yelp reviews prior to coming and my boyfriend and I were super excited. He ordered the Freitas and I ordered the grilled chicken with rice and beans. Worst Cuban food I've ever had. It's so hard to mess up Cuban food in Hialeah, but this was so gross. The beans tasted like they came out of a can or where left out for over a day. This little spot in hialeah is a corner stone in this community and close to being a landmark in my opinion. You can have a fast traditional Cuban breakfast here for about $4, that will leave you ready for a nap. This place is not about the quality compared to a restaurant. It more about eating something close to home, close to your roots. You will be treated as if they know you from the minute you walk in. During today's visit, I had a "Media Noche" (Midnight Sandwich) Sweet bread toasted, tons of Ham, pork leg shavings, Swiss cheese, light mayo and mustard, and hold the pickles, and my hubby went with the "Frita" Cubans version of a Burger, Burger bread with a burger, sausage based, with yuca chips and light ketchup. $8!! Meat has no taste . It felt like either they bought it somewhere beyond cheap or it had been on the freezer for months and months and had no taste after cooking . As a cuban, I have heard of this place many times but for years never stopped by. Morro Castle is as legit as it gets, definitely chill and it is open later hours, which is a bonus. I always order the Special of the Day for dinner which most of the time consists of grilled steak topped with onions, white rice, black beans & fries. For lunch, the sandwiches are great and never disappoint. I have tried the Media noche, Cuban Hamburger & Pan con bistec. They are generous with their portions and I always come out stuffed. A lot of Cuban restaurants have mediocre food that is often times inconsistent but Morro castle is always consistently great, which is one of the reasons they have been open for so long. I also order the breakfast which has toasted bread, scrambled eggs with ham (or any way you like it) and cafe con leche. It is the best way to start the day and seriously scrumptious. I recently moved near Hialeah after living in Westchester all my life. So when the temperature dipped this winter and my pregnancy cravings hit for churros and hot chocolate, I decided to check out Morro Castle for the first time. I wish I would have made the hours long line at La Palma instead. After making a moderately sized line outside to place an order, we waited over 90 minutes to actually receive our order. Meanwhile we watched as over a dozen people who ordered after us in the outside line received their churros before us. On top of that, we watched another dozen or so people who arrived after us were allowed to sit at the counter inside to place to-go orders and received immediate service. They also received their churros before we did. All this just to come home and realize that the hot chocolate tastes like it was made with water. No question, I won't be coming back. For churros and chocolate, there is no comparison - the only choice is La Palma. read more
