Other than GG disk course, this is one of the best. Certainly the best in the East Bay Area. 9 hole course with lots of variety.

Almost every hole is a blind throw from the tee (which to some extent is expected but this was a special level of nonsense), poorly marked holes and none existent support to next tees. I felt the overall course was poorly maintained. The only assistance I noticed were white poles that seemed to be markers that you are on the right path like a cairn. This could be confusing depending on holes that overlapped each other on course though. The terrain is wild long grass with poison oak scattered everywhere. There are potholes all over the course with very little well trodden paths to follow around. To some extent the wild portion of the terrain is what it is, so of course this is just FYI cause I don't expect rangers to be maintaining the whole hillside/mountain area. I didn't expect it to be easy; but as a newbie it was more than challenging and a bummer. Even my mister who's a great player found the course disappointing overall. For this area it is not where I'd recommend someone go.

Course has more holes that reward a RHBH player than LHBH. I played when almost every hole was on its B setting, which is the longer distance. Pros 2-4 pins per hole. Cement tee boxes. 2 practice baskets, but they are not located in an ideal location. DGA Mach V baskets throughout. Decent signage. Many holes have phone holders so you could film yourself teeing off (never seen this before.). Not too crowded, even during a peak time on a holiday. Modest elevation changes. Most of the course is wooded and require shots that navigate through and around tree clusters. Well maintained and still has that newish feeling. Several tee boxes were implemented on a slope and they built them up proper; slightly elevated, with wooden borders. Many holes have comfy wooden seating areas (tons of bowl holes;) Cons Course map needed a couple times to find the next hole. Poison oak is rampant. $6 parking fee must be paid at the lower Chestnut lot closer to the entrance. Bring bug spray, a few holes the mosquitos/gnats were annoying.

After a drive behind industrial buildings, you'll eventually reach the entrance to this trail and park. This was my first time here so I mostly stuck to the paved pathway, but there are a lot of different paths and trails that you can explore. On the main paved loop, it's a mostly flat walk around the hill and along the waterfront. You'll get great views of the water along the San Leandro Marina (El Torito side) and the Oakland airport. It's just under 2.5 miles to complete that loop. There are also some trails along the hill and a disc golf course. There are some less-nice views along the trail (like I said, industrial buildings), but it's not a big deal. There's a lot of street parking along the industrial streets right by the entrance and on the new year afternoon we didn't have any issues. It looks to be a popular spot for folks to bring their dogs. I did notice that a lot of people have their dogs off leash so if your dog is not so dog-friendly, maybe skip this trail, just in case other dogs come up to them.

Parking can be a little awkward since it's a dead end street just a few blocks from the main road on Marina. You get a nice waterfront view of the Oakland airport runway. Easy decision. M-F seniors get 1/2 off on boat rentals and from there you can finds the fish...if you know what you're doing ;). Anthony Chabot was a man who was instrumental in the California gold rush in the lower Sierras. He helped develop and mastered the hydraulic mining techniques required to reduce mountains to piles of rock to be sifted for gold. After those operations were shut down over environmental concerns, he brought his craft here to help make this reservoir. Amazing really. Nice spot to decompress and get right. Some areas around the lake show clear signs that hydraulic action was used. Birds, frogs, squirrels, butterflies, deer and more.

Chabot Park is not Lake Chabot Regional Park, but it does lead to there with the trails…read more The entrance to this Park is a little dicey to get to, if you're not familiar with this area of the San Leandro/East Oakland border area, it's hard to explain how to get here. And I have a feeling the residents of this area would like to keep it that way, so I'll honor their unwritten code, lol!! The Park itself is very much like your in the woods, lots of trees and fallen trees. They do have restrooms and disc golf here, which seems to be pretty popular, someone always seem to be playing it. Lots of free parking also. But the best thing about this park is the trail that can lead you to Lake Chabot. It starts off all uphill for at least 1/2 mile, then you start downhill and can determine which way around the lake you want to go. If you stay on the paved trail, to the right, you'll cross a bridge which is the Chabot Dam and it's a faster route, although hilly, to Lake Chabot Regional Park. If you choose the dirt trail, to the left, you won't necessarily stay next to the lake the whole way, there's signs to keep you on track. Either way, it's a great walk or run, watch and listen for the bike riders, sometimes they are really speeding coming off those hills. And if you're going to walk all the way around, bring water. Also, there's not a lot of areas where you get phone service. Always enjoy coming here, convenient for me!!
