Located less than 5 minutes from 580 off of the 150th and you're in a world away. Hike, fish, bike, have a picnic or host a large party/bbq on one of several reservable areas. $5.00 plus 2 for each dog---kind of an honor system but for less than 100 you can get an EBRP year round pass that allows you to visit a lot more parks as many times as you want. Easy decision. M-F seniors get 1/2 off on boat rentals and from there you can finds the fish...if you know what you're doing ;). Anthony Chabot was a man who was instrumental in the California gold rush in the lower Sierras. He helped develop and mastered the hydraulic mining techniques required to reduce mountains to piles of rock to be sifted for gold. After those operations were shut down over environmental concerns, he brought his craft here to help make this reservoir. Amazing really. Nice spot to decompress and get right. Some areas around the lake show clear signs that hydraulic action was used. Birds, frogs, squirrels, butterflies, deer and more. read more

Chabot Park is not Lake Chabot Regional Park, but it does lead to there with the trails. The entrance to this Park is a little dicey to get to, if you're not familiar with this area of the San Leandro/East Oakland border area, it's hard to explain how to get here. And I have a feeling the residents of this area would like to keep it that way, so I'll honor their unwritten code, lol!! The Park itself is very much like your in the woods, lots of trees and fallen trees. They do have restrooms and disc golf here, which seems to be pretty popular, someone always seem to be playing it. Lots of free parking also. But the best thing about this park is the trail that can lead you to Lake Chabot. It starts off all uphill for at least 1/2 mile, then you start downhill and can determine which way around the lake you want to go. If you stay on the paved trail, to the right, you'll cross a bridge which is the Chabot Dam and it's a faster route, although hilly, to Lake Chabot Regional Park. If you choose the dirt trail, to the left, you won't necessarily stay next to the lake the whole way, there's signs to keep you on track. Either way, it's a great walk or run, watch and listen for the bike riders, sometimes they are really speeding coming off those hills. And if you're going to walk all the way around, bring water. Also, there's not a lot of areas where you get phone service. Always enjoy coming here, convenient for me!! read more

On the northwest end of Lake Chabot is a wonderful wilderness park called Lake Chabot Park. Much smaller and far less crowded than the main Lake Chabot area, this place is peaceful and relaxing for a short and easy hike. The entrance has a small gravel parking area, cinderblock building restrooms, open field areas for the Camp Chabot, and frisbee golf course. There were lots of frisbee golfers out, either playing in groups or hanging out in the parking area, just talking. I don't mind the golfers filling up the parking area, as this means fewer hikers on the trails. The trails are a combination of paved and groomed dirt. You can take a short hike to the dam and back, or continue on around the lake which will be a good lengthy hike. The scenery is beautiful and calming. If a first timer, be sure to stop and read the educational boards along the paths. There is a lot of history with Lake Chabot to learn. read more

I play disc golf here semi frequently. A nice 9 hole course, up to 11 if you play crosses after hole 4. Never really crowded. Not the longest holes which I like because I don't have a great distance drive. Usually a couple tee box options per hole. Some tee boxes are just a spot in the dirt or road people shoot from. Others are actual cement boxes. I really love a couple holes, especially hole 4. Elevated and only a small window to shoot it between trees to get it near the pin in 1. Almost aced it this last round I played which felt awesome. Obligatory 'bowl hole' near 4 tee box in the woods. What a stoner sport this is :) read more

When I get home early enough from work, I like to do a 40-60 minute hike here, usually after dinner. Chabot Park is only a mile from our house, so it's really convenient for us. The trail is far more challenging on this side of the lake compared to the Castro Valley side, so you get a much better cardiovascular workout. The trail goes up and up right away for about half a mile, and then you descend to the dam. Smaller hills await you on the trail past the dam. If you're not in good shape, take your time walking up the hill. You'll get to the summit eventually. :) The parking at this end of the park is free. There is also a playground and some picnic tables. Disc golfing is also a popular activity here. I always see a group of guys playing disc golf even on weekday afternoons. I always dread the time change in the fall, as it'll be dark by the time I get home. I will have to start going to gym to do my cardio then, instead of doing it outdoors. So much more pleasurable getting my steps at Chabot though! read more

This place is a hidden gem within the city, a piece of hidden paradise untouched. Very big and old trees, a little stream,very good for picnics and solitude. Decent place to hike, especially after having brunch in the area. The West Shore trail was well covered, so it will never got too warm and was a nice hike to the Marina. You walk along the lake, but because of all of the trees, you barely get to see the water. The water was so still and would have made for nice pictures, but the trees got in the way. This is a great beginner hike as it had some hills and a few vista points. Along the trail, there are .5 mile markers painted into the pavement. If you don't pay attention, you will barely even notice them. We didn't need them, but there were out-houses throughout the trail. Once you get to the Marina, there's a grassy area for picnics, bbq grills, and real bathrooms. read more

Beware of flying golf balls and discs. While golf balls are only a threat if you take the trail alongside the Chabot golf course, the discs are a threat for your parked car. We visited Chabot park for a morning hike while the place is actually very popular among disc golfers. Several targets are located next to the Estudillo Ave parking lot, so that an occasional disc can easily hit your parked car. Unfortunately we only realized that when we got back to the parking lot after the hike. First we saw a disk hit the back windshield of the SUV parked two cars away from ours. Then we checked our car and found out that the tail light was cracked in such a manner that could only come from another disc hit. So disappointing. Yesterday I took an hour-long, after-work hike from this park to Lake Chabot -- breathing in the sweet fragrance of pine and sage, and listening to birdsong and the gentle waves from the lake lapping at the shore. Very rigourous landscape if you go off-trailing a lot(I do it for research purposes). It is also not as pretty as Redwood Park. It makes sense why there are not a lot of people that hike here. Beware: There are yellowjacket wasps here. Statistically it is unlikely you will step on one of their nests. But it happens. It happened to me. But I haven't explored the whole park since it is pretty huge. This review is mainly referring to the access point on Redwood Road, the Anthony Chabot Staging area there. read more

Chabot Park is a solid choice in the way of grilling with a pack of passionate outdoorsy eaters, playing frisbee golf with pals, horseshoeing it up with ponies, smashing some sand volleyball or just kicking it in general. The pines crest overhead and the woody-ness makes you feel like you're ready for camping. Although this park though isn't huge, you'll find an expansive array of activities (mentioned above). If you're going for the frisbee golf, you might want to look elsewhere. This course is a mere 9 holes and you'll often find yourself slinging into people-ridden territory. But if a picnic is your fancy, the grills are huge. Think: 6 feet sorta huge. Just bring your own firemaking items and you're ready. Parking is super close to all the open space amenities and if I were 16 again, I'd probably come here for secret make out sessions. read more

We went to Chabot Park (not to be confused with Lake Chabot Regional Park), operated by the city of San Leandro, this weekend. We heard there was a frisbee golf course here, and there was! My first time playing. There's nine "holes," but they're a little hard to decipher which one starts (or ends) where, etc. But the setting is great. Lots of tall trees and little hills that make you forget Interstate 580 is less than a half-mile away. The only thing that dampened this experience a bit were some of the strange characters here. People smoking weed: OK. Some random dude walking up to us to tell us to look up some religious Web site: not so cool. Some man just sitting in his van for whole time we were there: WTF. The freaks who show up here ruin the serene surroundings a bit, but I would still come back. This was on a Sunday morning/afternoon, not Friday night or something. Another warning, we missed the turn to come here. It's a bit deceiving. When you're heading down Estudillo and see a sign for Lake Chabot Park (with an arrow pointing to the right) ... don't go that way. Veer left at the fork in the road and you can't miss Chabot Park. If you're not into frisbee golf, there's picnic tables, a jungle gym and a slide that goes down a hill. read more

Disc golf review First time here Been playing about a year Tuesday Afternoon Park is very foresty but small. It looks like they have done some recent improvements. Lots if fresh wood chips everywhere and clean bathroom. 9 holes - almost all less than 300' and closer to 200'. Little bit of elevation change on some holes and lots of tree hazards. Best quality signs I've seen out of the 4 courses I've been to. However, they do require a good look to figure out the layout. 1st tee by the bridge as you come in. 3rd tee by the swing sets and vehicle gate. The rest are pretty easy to find. I give it 3 stars for complexity of course and 4 stars if you wrap up the whole location package. It was quiet when I went. read more

I love this park.. I learned how to play disk golf here!! We live in such a beautiful area to have all this we all love in Lake Chabot. I can bring my dog, play disk golf hang out when it a beautiful day !!! People are real nice.. Not so much trash hanging around. Nice small park. Sometimes a bit ghetto. FROLF COURSE!! I'm a bit biased and am scoring high for the simple fact that theres a disc golf course here. There aren't a ton around, and this is only the second one i've been to. It's a bit on the small side, only 9 holes, and the tees are kinda hard to find if you don't know where to look already. The diagrams at the tees are sometimes horrible, and tell you to throw your disc around some trees when you can clearly see the basket straight ahead. Theres a slight water hazard with the creek running along a couple holes, and even a slightly uphill hole. The course is great for practicing your short game with your putters and mid range discs. The rest of the park has picnic areas with some tables, and a big field, and a parking lot that seems to be a convenient place to go for kids to smoke a little smokey. The couple times ive been, it hasnt been very crowded. I'll definitely be back for some frolf. read more

This review is for the hiking trails, not for any of the park facilities. I am not a picnic or frisbee person. I find this spot as a great staging area for many of the Lake Chabot and surrounding trails. A favorite Saturday meeting point for friends who live in South Bay Area. Free parking is a major draw and that when you first start off there is a small uphill climb on cement, but once you are over the top you can continue to choose the main paved trail along the west side of the lake or make a left and get on the dirt trails- my favorites. I do enjoy hiking around the lake, but the main drag can get busy on the weekends, so come early. read more

I got to drive the boat I went on a Tuesday and it was 50% off so we got the big boat . Not sure why it was 50% off maybe because it was a bit windy. Will definitely come again when it's sunny . We paid $80 for the big boat and that's half off . It was amazing ! read more

THE NATURE OF SAN LEANDRO. I believe that the term "Chabot Park" refers to a relatively small park that is located just to the west of Chabot Regional Park and that is continguous with Chabot Regional Park. As such, it might be reasonable to mention some of the attractions of Chabot Regional Park in a review of "Chabot Park." But first, a few words about San Leandro which, on occasion, is called "Sallyandro" by the natives. In the late 1960s, I went to middle school (John Muir Jr. High School) and high school (Pacific High School) in San Leandro, and thus I'm familiar with the territory. Also, in the year 1967, I bought my Fender Stratocaster electric guitar from Music Unlimited located on East 14th Street in Sallyandro. My band played at various schools and at public recreation facilities in San Leandro and Hayward. San Leandro is the land that time forgot. Aside from the automobile showrooms on Marina Blvd., most of San Leandro is just like it was in the mid 1950s to mid 1960s. At one time, my rock'n'roll band played in Chabot Park, not far from the parking lot at the eastern end of Estudillo. Anyway, now that this introduction is out of the way, I'll talk about Chabot Park and some of the adjoining hiking areas. The best features of the park include: (1) TRAIL TO THE MARSH AND THEN TO THE MARINA. Trailhead from Estudillo side of Chabot Park, which leads you through the forest northwards along the golf course, then via a steeply descending trail that takes you eastwards to stone bridge, then an endless trail taking you in the southerly direction past the shooting range (actually, the shooting range was removed in the year 2016), and finally across a narrow asphalt road that leads you to a broad vista where you can see Castro Vallley, where the trail then plunges downwards again and leaves you at the edge of the marsh. Once at the marsh, you can cross over the marsh bridge, and then take the clockwise route towards the marina, and to a welll-deserved pit stop at the cafe. Alternatively, you can start on the same trail leading out of Chabot Park, then cross the top of the dam, and soon find yourself at the marina and the well-deserved pit stop at the cafe. (2) THE CAFE. The cafe at the marina is not your grandfather's cafe. The menu is fancier than what it used to be. Some of the menu items are now gourmet items, or anyway almost gourmet items. The hamburgers are festooned with a variety of fresh cut vegetables, for example. The ambiance at the cafe and in surrounding picnic areas is a bit like that at Johnson Beach located in Guerneville (crowded with kids and happy families). (3) BIRDS, BIRDS, BIRDS. The marsh to the eastern most side of the lake is fascinating, because of the many geese, and occasional flocks of white pelicans, and tall grasses. I've not been to the marsh after dark, but I would imagine that it provides a symphony of frogs, just as the marsh next to PELICAN INN at Muir Beach contains a symphony of frogs at night. The most crowded trail in Chabot Park, is the trail leading to the marsh bridge (where most people stop and turn back) and the return trip from the marsh bridge back to the marina. (4) AEROBICS. For exercise, I also recommend the moderate-length hike, which hug the entire circumference if the lake. This hike includes a couple of steep spots that enable a few minutes of aerobic excercise. You can begin this hike from either parking area (Estudillo area, or Castro Valley side parking area). it makes no difference. Even an eight year old can easily take the trail all the way around the lake. To conclude, Chabot Park and its many trails provide a nice environment for hiking, where residential properties are fortunately not visible. For another nearby hiking spot, which offers a bit more in terms of natural scenic beauty, and more in terms of aerobics, I recommend the various trails in the eastern half of LAS TRAMPAS, located just off Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon, and also the eastern half of SUNOL REGIONAL WILDERNESS with its steep uphill hikes and soaring redtail hawks. read more

Disc Golf @ Chabot Park- This place kinda blows. It is a short 9 hole course. You can play 18 in about 40-45 min. The holes are kinda marked. When I say kinda I mean some have the signs, some don't. The ones that do are either broken or have graffiti on the sign. There always seems to be some creepers that show up and hang out in their cars. Anything above a beginner, need not apply. read more

Played 8 of nine disc golf holes here since the 4th hole is unmarked. There aren't any real "keys" on the course and the maps are hard to decipher. It seems to be a locals spot mainly with people hanging out and smoking. The course isn't as sceninc as some of the others I've been to so far. But it was nice to check out. read more

This is a beautiful park! I'm lucky to have this park only 20 minutes from home. I came here primarily to play disc golf. The setting is great, and as a relatively new disc golfer, the very low wind factor makes learning the fundamentals of the game much more enjoyable. I came alone for the first time with no map, and figured out the layout pretty quickly despite the poor signage and lack of proper tees (once you have done it once, you're set). There are a few reasonably challenging technical shots that keep the experienced players I see here often on their toes. There are only 9 holes, but the basket locations make it easy to make up your own game, which then gives you a virtually unlimited number of possibilities (the lack of heavy traffic makes custom-gaming possible quite often, especially in the morning). read more

I love Chabot Park! Primarily, I go to Chabot for the 9 hole disc golf course, but my friends and I occasionally play ultimate frisbee on the field as well. The disc golf course is very easy (good for beginners), but also very fun if you're just trying to have a laid-back game. However, it's not very well marked, so I recommend going with someone who has played the course before. There are various obstacles, such as lots of trees on certain holes and the stream that runs parallel to hole #8, making the game nicely challenging. Sometimes, during the summer, camps use various sites, so mind them as you're playing. But back to the park. It's very beautiful! Lots of eucalyptus trees and a nice quiet environment. read more
