Love this spot here in south Austin. It's our neighborhood-let's-go-and-get-a-little-crazy-with-friends kinda place. It's easy to have one too many here. Glad it's a short Uber around the corner for us. Best enjoyed in great weather with a live band performing. But, we've also spent many a cold evenings bundled up around the fire pits. Sipping Tito's and watching the sunset. Feels like an adult playground in the middle of the woods. Not in the city. That's my favorite part. Don't go here if you are wanting to drink beer. They have a 2 beer limit per person which wasn't a joke. I was very disappointed (we weren't even driving we were ubering). The bar itself is cute and the outdoor patio is nice to look at but like I said 2 beer limit. I LOVE this place!! its an awesome South Austin indoor/outdoor bar. They have volleyball courts with playoffs, a band that usually plays every night on the weekends. The bands are so good! local usually and play really good cover songs and originals. It's definitely a bar, but they also have food trailers that serve delicious food. and sometimes have other trailer vendors that sell clothes/cigar bar, etc. you never know what they'll have! They always have available parking, even though it may be a little bit of a walk on busy weekend nights, its never inconvenient. On the cold nights they have fire pits lit and heaters going and the TV's with the games on. love it. Sundays are brunches with either $1 biscuits and gravy and a whole Bloody Mary bar with all kinds of edible drink accessories. yum!!!! and kids are also allowed on Sundays during the day, kids and Mimosas- ya can't go wrong! Have always enjoyed this place and felt bad when armadillo moved in as their competition, so always wanted to support. Came here last Friday after dinner in an Uber. Me and my boyfriend had 2 pieces of pizza leftover in a small takeout box. The bartender told us we couldn't have outside food and was a little sassy about it but we understood. We bought drinks and immediately went to the outskirts to eat the pizza so we wouldn't have it in their establishment. As we are hurriedly trying to finish the pizza, another guy comes by and rudely tell us we can't have outside food. We said we were sorry and are trying to get rid of it. He grabs our box from us and tries to throw it away, and I had to grab the pizza from him. They would rather waste food than let us finish our leftovers, after we had just purchased expensive drinks from them. The whole thing left a sour taste in my mouth. We were trying to be polite and work with their rules but they were going out of their way to be rude. Hard to support them after this situation. read more

Im giving Moontower Saloon 2 stars. Yes, the atmosphere is aeesome and you can take your dog... But, last 2 times i went to Moontower, i have had issues with the bartenders. On One innocent particular, a bartender asked for ID (which they were holding as collateral for washers) and I completely forgot. I opened my wallet and pulled out my boyfriend's ID. I showed it to the girl and she said "happy birthday! Are you driving?" Even though i said yes, the girl served me #3 beers that were for my friends. Keep in mind, It was not my birthday & im obviously not a man. I have long blonde hair and green eyes, he does not. Great job bartender! Maybe yall should consider "training" your employees!!!! Party at the Moontower!!!! These guys have the South Austin market cornered. They have the perfect setup with plenty of parking these days. You can come out and play volleyball, washers, or corn-hole while listening to live music. The live bands tend to play from 8-11:15 PM due to sound ordinances in the neighborhood, but that does not stop everyone from having a good time. You can choose to hang inside the tiny bar setup or on the patio where there is another outside bar to get you libations of choice. The Moontower Saloon is dog friendly. Just make sure your dog is friendly with not just humans, but other fur babies. The security is tight with the staff wearing ear pieces to communicate faster if someone or something is needed quickly. They do have a 2 drink and carry minimum per person from the bar. This cuts down on those binge drinkers. You know who you are. The staff is usually friendly and will make sure you enjoy your time at the Moontower. Why, because you could take your business elsewhere, but you chose to go to the Moontower Saloon. The weather in Austin is usually awesome. So, why not spend it in Awesome, Texas? My wife and I visited a few weeks ago. The bartender at the inside bar was extremely rude and condescending to us and seemed annoyed because we took a minute to decide which drinks to order, even though it was a slow night and the bar was empty. My wife asked a simple question about their beer selection and the bartender seemed irritated and answered her so rudely to the point that she became uncomfortable and decided not to order anything at all. This is really a sad excuse for a bar. I came, I saw, I people watched, and I got the F out of here. There is a parking attendant carding you as you drive in the parking lot (carding everyone in the car). Ummm thats odd. The indoor outdoor space with a stage is trying to accomplish something, however it fails. The space outside is huge, offering typical activities that drunk people like to engage in at bars....it feels like a big college party in someone's backyard. And not a good party. The real laugh factor is the clientele: Just a big mixed bag of rejects. Specifically dirty 6th'ers. The music playing in the background was AWFUL. I found this bar to be full of douchebags and hoodrats on a Friday night. Maybe its big enough to get away from rude weirdo d-bags bumping into you on purpose over and over, but I still wouldn't risk it. *The real weird thing is the constant roaming of cops here. I've never been to a bar where cops just roam freely waiting to catch someone slip up. With cops ever present, you know there's shit that happens here during hours and after hours. This can only mean one thing: Poor decision makers frequent Moontower. With this kind of space it has the potential to be great for those out in the dirty south, since there's next to nothing this far south, but they went wrong somewhere and I just wouldn't go here ever again. Do NOT patronize Moontower Saloon. They are only concerned with their hip, trendy image. Their "dress code" policy - which denied service to my husband and myself - is both discriminatory, and completely ridiculous. Here's what I posted on their facebook page and their response. In addition to this, they removed my post from their page -- guess they're scared that word will get out what jerks they are. Me: When my husband and I were there Monday night, we were told that we could not be served unless my husband left his motorcycle vest on the bike. This makes NO sense. Are we different people when we take off our leather vests? We have been productive and stable members of the South Austin Community for more than 10 years, have been married almost 22 years, have 3 children. My husband is a veteran of the U.S. Army and our son is currently serving in the United States Marine Corps --- and yet, you wouldn't serve us because my husband had on a motorcycle club vest. You are the absolute antithesis of what South Austin is all about. Not only will you never get my business, I will be sure to tell all my friends not to patronize your establishment. Like Moontower Saloon: dress code. get over it. And now, not long after I posted this review, they've started whining about Yelp on their Facebook page. This place is just the worst. Moontower Saloon is essentially a big outside area, with lots of drunk people, two bars, and some mediocre food trucks. Parking is beyond horrendous- packed, busy, dangerous, and hard to find. Service is ABYSSMAL. I generally just do not care how well service is executed as long as the product is worth visiting for, but damn.. these people have to be making an effort in order to come off as so unpleasant. The drink selection is not to my taste, focusing more on Bud Light and Miller drinkers who would rather get drunk and hook up than enjoy a good beverage. Prices are ridiculously high, especially considering the general price point in Austin for crappy beer at a crappy bar. I think this is my first 1-star review. There really aren't too many places in town that I would refuse to join my best friends at. For the same pros and cons, I'd rather visit dirty 6th. "Adults at Play" says the sign at the entrance of Moontower's parking lot. An attendant searches your car and checks your ID to ensure you're an adult. When I hit the bar they IDd me again to make super-sure I'm an adult. Moontower wants to confirm that only adults get into a place that's basically the adult version of fantasy land. 60% of the people there are probably adults in age only. Are they adults in every other way? No se. There are volleyball courts, food trucks, and bands playing at deafening levels for us old folk adults who are allowed the privilege of draft beers (no beloved Blood & Honey) and volleyball. The volleyball courts are actually impressive, as are the deck areas and walkways. Having been told about this place for at least 2 years, I was surprised by the space. If they have a cool vibes reggae night I would come back. It was the kind of loud country jammin' that leads you to scream to hear each other which, combined with the smoke, is a recipe for voice loss right quick. I can sit silently and drink and watch the music for only so long before it's nap time. But overall it's a sweet oasis down south where you're likely to see a bunch of pals. I ran into 2 friends from different social circles and we agreed that we must be adults. After a few minutes of searching for a spot, parking was a breeze - as long as you're, you know, an adult. Moontower is awesome. It has everything you'd hope for at an Austin bar plus a convenient south location for those of us who dwell a little deeper. Full bar, plenty of taps. Food trucks are good!! (Check to see if they're open before you go, but they're open most *normal* hours.) Currently Triplewide is parked there. I'm a big fan of the Brussels sprouts, but everything is good. I'll usually split the sprouts and tots with a friend. But get whatever you want! Don't know? Ask the guys inside they're really nice. Moontower has lots of seating options... but hurry cause the fire pit spots fill up fast! There's lots to do, corn hole and that washers game. (Sorry I'm new here so idk what it's called!) They also have sand volleyball courts, and it looks like a league that plays. Walk around the grounds, there's a swing set in the back. It's a great vibe day or night, they light it up well. I have only been once and it was a neat, south austin set up with food trailers, volleyball court, stage, and indoor/outdoor bars. But the security seems a little ridiculous. It was definitely packed and filled with lots of good people watching. My friends and I were just checking it out and literally had 1 beer each. After my friend closed her tab and we were leaving, but noticed we were being trailed by a stranger. Turns out the security guy was on our heels. He says the bartender told him to flag "the girl in the black shirt" and that she couldn't drive. Really? He wouldn't specify the bartender, which made it seem really fishy. There was no interaction or lengthy conversation with any bartender. Apparently, ordering a beer and tipping well and saying thank you picks up a red flag. He basically told us if we chose to leave that the constable at the front would pull us over. It wasn't worth the fight so we uber'd it. Drink here at your own risk. read more

Went to Moontower for a friend's birthday on a Sunday. We were smart and reserved the court so as not to have any issues. I have no complaints about the prices of drinks (very reasonable) or the quality of the court (amazing sand!). We did however have an incident with someone who must have been a manager. A few people went to order beers and to make carrying them easier, the bartender handed them over with the can ring on them. We didn't think anything of it and kept drinking. Not much later we were approached by a dude who immediately went into a spiel about how he was told we brought it our own beer, that he was going to search our bags to find more beer, and then he was going to kick us out for bringing beer. We were stunned not only because of the accusation, but with how aggressive he was and how he was not going to hear our side of the story. After his huff and puff routine we were able to explain that no, we did not bring our own beer in and if fact is was one of his own bartenders that handed it to us that way. I could tell he was embarrassed and his demeanor changed some, but come on. Talk about being rude. Look, I wouldn't be surprised if this is an issue that Moontower goes through. I know they have to take a stand. But couldn't you at least allow us to defend ourselves before you make threats of searching our bags and kicking us out? We were customers at a birthday party for crying out loud. Hopefully the dude was just having an off day and he isn't like this with others. Twice I have been denied service here and I have had some sort of mag lite shone in my face by their strict security on another occasion. I've nearly been in a wreck from people exiting onto Manchaca. The few times I've actually had a drink there, I've been disappointed by the selection/pour/price. I live close to Moontower and was eager to try it. I work nights and have an odd schedule, so my first chance was on Monday, March 25th. I rode up with my wife and liked what I saw. I parked the bike and we went up to the bar. Fires were burning, friendly folks milling around, it was a nice, outdoor, backyard type of thing going on. We approached the bar, ordered a beer and as the bartender was handing me the open beer she asked if I was in colors. I am indeed a member of a family oriented fraternal motorcycle club and was indeed wearing my colors. I'm proud of my club, the volunteer work we do and the money we raise for local charities. When I answered yes, I was told she couldn't serve me. I was further informed she could hand me the beer she already had opened if I took off my colors. Her condescending and judgmental attitude was off putting. I let her pour out the beer as we made our exit. I have since visited the Moontower website, and have read the dress code policy listed there. I am not in the habit of seeking out dress code policies of local watering holes before visiting them. I do support a businesses right to serve whom they choose. I choose not to spend my money at Moontower. I do not support discrimination. Discrimination has taken many forms in our country, racial, gender, orientation and now I suppose clothing based. Feel free to support a business that discriminates on the basis of colors if you choose to. In the end, all we have is our choices. read more

Don't waste your time. We live in the neighborhood and decided to walk with our daughter in the stroller to get a slice of pizza from the food trailer. Not to drink, considering we were on a family walk. As soon as we walked onto the property we were approached and told to leave. Really? We explained that we only wanted to get food to go. The guy very reluctantly agreed but made sure to tell us we "had to keep the baby out of sight so it doesn't bother guests". Really? She was sleeping, bro. So we had to take turns watching the stroller as we one-by-one looked over the menu, walking back and forth to confirm. Ridiculous. Then they told us cash only. Awesome! No cash only card. We didn't even bother to see if there was an ATM after such a rude "greeting" when we only wanted to-go food and walked 2 miles there to get it. We have also been informed that wearing biker vests, solid colors or having a neck tattoo is warrant for removal from the bar. To sum it up, they don't like many types people other than white college students, ergo: don't waste your time. read more

On the way in the security guard shined his flashlight in my eyes and around the car demanding id.Ok...a little strange but whatever we handed over id. We parked and headed into the bar area.Prices were not that impressive.No specials going on.I do have to agree with other reviews...the bartenders definitely could've been more friendly.Not to mention we were asked for id every time we went up to get a drink.I get it.Im in the service industry and I understand trying to cover your bases but being asked for id four different times in a matter of an hour?Really?A little excessive. There are heaters everywhere but the only ones functioning seem to have come with a gaggle of frat boys!!! Aaaaah well... look at those stars and those strings of happy lights and - oooh, food trailers... Are they playing Modest Mouse? I'm happy. Sitting on a clear night under a sky I can actually see because it's just far enough out of the hazy glow of the downtown lights to get some of that good ole celestial twinkle, I'm thinking this could just be the perfect bar (Ahem...volleyball...ahem). If you're lucky enough (get there early enough) to grab a fire pit on a cold night, you've hit the jackpot. But we were content at the bar-height tables on the patio, under the awning, out of the drizzles, a few paces from the bar and with perfect access to the pool table, we were sittin' pretty. It filled up fast by 10:00 but there was still tons of space in the yard. Service, meh, c'mon girls. If you don't know how to talk to the cute boys... just a tip that fart jokes aren't the way to go. I know you're kinda cute and young and silly with your hoodie all tied up over your face and your bumble bee headband... but don't kill this for me, please. Lock it up a bit, the grownups are drinking. Nazi door staff. Used to be great, now shocking door staff. Timeline NYE - guy thrown out for throwing a paper party horn on the fire pit which would have vanished 5 seconds later July - Asked to leave stone cold sober but after ordering 3 drinks within 2 hour October - my UK friend with official UK driving license showing DOB had to go home (with me) and get his passport! AVOID! Indian Roller c'mon! Update- That was live and direct. After trailing back home for the passport it was a different guy on the door. I'm unbelievably happy to have found a super cool bar in my neck of the woods - such a wonderful reprieve from dealing with downtown shenanigans! However, not everything is rainbows and butterflies. Yes, the weekend parking situation at Moontower generally stinks. The space gets really crowded and sometimes, it's impossible to find a table. But the bar's many good points far outweigh the bad - for instance, my favorite new food truck (Pretty Thai for a White Guy) parks here! Also, I love the big front yard and the ensuing down home 'Austin' feel. The bartenders are friendly and fast and there's plenty of beer options to satisfy both beer geek and domestic drinker alike. I think the best way to describe hanging out at Moontower Saloon is that it's 'easy'. Come as you are, stay as long as you want... no judgement, no frills. My friend got kicked out because she "stumbled" on the uneven ground. The manager was very rude and said one thing but meant another. Apparently the "policies" are: "once we cut you off, you must leave," but this is not what was communicated to the table. I hope Moontower gets their priorities straight. Are they a bar? I submitted a review on Facebook which was met with comments from others who experienced bad customer service from this place. My intention was to notify them of this in hopes they would adjust and grow. They were very harassing for no reason and there was no evidence of narcotics found. The BF and I tried out Moontower the other night following a friend's wedding in Manchaca. It also happens to be right around the corner and is frequented by some coworkers, so we'd been discussing going for a few months. How nice to have a place in the neighborhood to take the pups! Unfortunately, we weren't very impressed. First of all, I felt like I was on 6th Street due to some of the clientele. We were hoping/expecting a relaxed, South Austin experience, but instead it was somewhat of a chaotic spectacle. Then we had to wait a good long while (tenish minutes?) in line for drinks, and it just so happened that both of the bartenders that served us were new, and thus had no knowledge of any prices or availability. When we received our tab, we were both overcharged from what we were told was the price. I also heard the girl next to me order 2 shots and was asked if both parties were present before she could get them. Seriously? Wonder if they do the same thing all the time, or if that girl had perhaps been ordering a lot of shots? They charge an additional 25 cents over the liquor price to add soda or juice. (Shot of whiskey = $3.75, whiskey+coke = $4) They also charge a dollar if you'd like your drink in a larger glass - not a double, just in a tall glass. Okay, these are not huge up charges, but I don't know of any other bar that does this, especially in South Austin. We did talk to a manager who offered to take the additional charges off, which was nice. We explained that it wasn't really about the money, but the perception that his bartenders gave and that it showed us they had a lack of concern for correctly training their staff. Overall, just not very satisfied with the experience at all. We will probably be back to give it one more chance, only because of the manager (I wish I could remember his name!), and I will update then. read more

This place is close to my house so I decided to visit.... All my friends have been to it so I was like why not. I've heard so many things bout it. To start off, this is no sixth street or some bar street. This is a big place in the middle of neighborhoods and nowhere. It is the ONLY bar type place in the area. Basically it's a huge land with a bar and some mediocre food trucks. That's it.... It's soooo overrated. It fits with the Austin hipster scene though. The security is extra strict. The drinks aren't cheap. It's freaking cold outside. I don't understand why woulD people want to stay outside and drink. ITS FREEZING. Yea, the lights are "cool" but seriously? The first time I went to moontower it was decent. Took a while to get some beer, but I let that slide. I just wanted to check the place out. It seemed pretty cool. Upon a return visit the customer service was less than stellar. I looked the bartenders right in the eye and got no service. Then one female bartender asked the guy standing a few feet away from me, that arrived after I did, for his drink order. Excuse me? I was there first! Rude! The bouncer later treated me and my friend like criminals. We weren't drunk, only had 2 beers over several hours, but due to a medical condition that flared up, I got sick. He accused us of lying about not being drunk and got in my friends face and yelled at her. Really dude? That wasn't necessary. I will never return to the moontower if this is how they treat their patrons. There are plenty of other bars to choose from in south Austin. read more

I don't get the appeal. Maybe it's because South Austin is so starved for a decent bar. I would love to love this place but I just can't. I've been there maybe 4 times. Every time I left feeling a little less happy than when I arrived. This is hard to do when consuming alcohol. There is nothing in particular I can say about the place that I think would make it better. I just wish it didn't make me feel depressed being there. Seemingly a cool spot, but when my friends and I came here via Lyft, one of them was cut off for no reason, AFTER already being served a drink. We were not being loud or boisterous. We had already been drinking some, but not to the point of being cut off. And we were being safe by using Lyft.
