QUICK!! Somebody give me a reason to drive back out to this place (like today)! Throw a party, a sand volleyball tournament or tell me about a live band playing there that's a must see, and I'm there! What a funky-cool spot. I feel like this has to be one of those must-visit spots if you live in Austin or the surrounding areas. First off, the place is huge and has a number of things to checkout while you're hanging out with your friends or by your lonesome (take a friend though). Plenty of parking space. Large bar with a covered seating/deck area with plenty of TVs to catch a game. Chairs and tables on the lawn that put you up close and center to the live band for your listening and viewing pleasure. Sand volleyball your thing? There are plenty of courts out back for that-- amateurs welcome. I suppose the most charming things about this place are the eclectic crowd that it draws and the decor-- lights strung around the trees and awnings. Waitstaff was a tad sparse, but friendly; and the drinks and beers on tap were great. I'm definitely a fan of this magical place! I was a little hesitant to try this place after reading more recent reviews but it was definitely a-ok for a Wed evening. We went for a friend's bday party and BFF and I, always punctual to a fault, arrived at 6:00 to an outside patio filled with folks we didn't know. The bday girl was late. As BFF is currently on the wagon, and I am on Weds in solidarity (even, alas, the Wed of my last day of work before VACAY!!), we grabbed our waters and lemonades and checked out the food trailers. We found a pizza place, a cupcake place (that makes cupcakes with booze??) that was closed, and a burger spot. He opted for a mushroom burger and me a panini and he also got an order of what sounded like heaven on earth, Lugnuts, ie balls of pepperjack cheese wrapped in bacon and fried. He loved his messy burger, I felt the panini was just ok, but the Lugnuts....whoa, pure definition of too much of a good thing. The mouthful of cheese and bacon just expands as you chew, like a wad of bacon bubble gum. Blech. After eating we browsed around. This really is a beautiful outdoor area, immense with tall old trees, adirondack chairs and picnic tables and benches, volleyball courts, and a photo booth. Oh, and misters that they unfortunately turned off around 6:30 (water restrictions?) at which time the biting flies and no see ums moved in for the blood feast. Standing around a group of drunks and drinking countless glasses of water made me feel a bit like Violet on Willy Wonka.... I needed to be rolled out and juiced. We made our way to the very nice, very cool bathrooms. I wanted to hang out in there with the pix of Brad Pitt and Ryan Gossling but I couldn't be the party pooper. Back outside, folks were playing horseshoes and beanbags, waitresses were coming around in a flurry with drinks, and folks were swatting at biting bugs. Unlike some reviews I've read, the clientelle, at least on a Wed, was just fine. Some girls in bikini tops, most everyone in flip flops, everything chill and casual. We had squeaked past the parking lot security guy as we came in because he moseyed off for a potty break but when we left there was a line of folks to get in and he was leaning into every car. It made us wonder in frustration what he was looking for and we almost turned around and got back in line to find out. Maybe he was looking for "Patches".....There's a sign that says "No Colors No Patches" and I admit I'm a little ignorant on what that means, but it sure is fun to yell "NO PATCHES!!" in a deep man's voice. Try it. It's hilarious. You might as well be yelling "NO DING DONGS!!". I didn't even need to be drunk to find that funny. BFF and I were a little nervous even because, as usual, we had inadvertantly ended up wearing the same COLOR, blue in this case, and didn't want to be taken for Crips (sp ????). It was more of a powder and teal blue, but still. I'll be moving down south soon and I could definitely see myself spending time at this spot. I will NEVER go here again. I came here on a Monday evening to watch a football game with friends. There are food trailers there, but the only one open was pizza, which I cannot eat, so I ordered delivery. As soon as I picked it up, the manager stopped me and told me that no outside food was allowed in. Please keep in mind that while the bar is inside, I was sitting at an outside picnic table. I questioned the food trailers, to cl which his response was they they were owned by the establishment. Even though they have different names and it doesn't say that anywhere. I commented that I cannot eat pizza and asked if there was anything else, to which he told me that on Monday night that was my only option. He then told me that I was not allowed to bring my food in and that I would have to leave. Nowhere does it state that the food trailers are owned by the establishment or that outside food is not allowed in. So, after o had been drinking for an hour, I was forced to get in my car and drive home so that I could eat food that I could actually eat. Doesn't sound very smart to me! read more

Moontower is like sitting in the backyard of your best buds house while cracking cold ones and listening to your friends' band jam. The ambience can't be beat. There are a few places in town that are cool without trying. Moontower is one of the most comfortable bars to hang out in. They have tons of parking and seating, so you can bring as many people as you'd like. There are endless options (and sometimes changing) for food since the lot is filled with trucks. It's a great mix between a neighborhood bar and one you're willing to drive to. I love heading out here during the colder nights, because they have a fire pit that lights up the outdoor space. You can bring your dog on those nights too, because the pups love the chilly air! read more

Couldn't ask for a better neighborhood bar. If you're looking for a fun outdoor space where you can kick your feet up, enjoy a cold beer (or cocktail!), and enjoy wonderful S. Austin, this is a great option. There's outdoor volleyball, corn hole, horseshoes, live music (though I can't say I've ever loved the bands...sorry, bands!), fire pits, and a yummy food truck! The bathrooms are clean, the staff is nice, and they host lots of special events (bring on the crawfish!). This place is super spacious, so you don't feel like you're on top of the people next to you, and I've never encountered an a**hole here. Maybe I've just been lucky? So I've given this place a couple tries... The set up is nice. Music is mediocre at best. 1. The parking is $15 dollars. It does not go towards your drinks like they advertise. Basically they just validate your parking if you buy a drink. 2. Bartenders can be extremely rude. Old guy with the beard was so impatient and condescending when I asked about the parking. There are better places to drink where the bartenders are friendly and parking isn't $15. That is not the first time I have had a bad experience because of rude bartenders. Meh. I've got a hard time making a consistent opinion about Moontower Saloon. I wanted this place to be just as David Wooderson saw it in Dazed and Confused a la "Party at the Moontower!" Not necessarily the case. Instead, it's a combination of locals who probably gave up their city life for reasonably priced real estate and this is one of few watering holes in the area. The other half are pretentious dog owners who pay very little attention to what their furry friends are up to. The beer is cheap, the selection is mediocre. I go through the drinks like water, as they are served in plastic water cups. The food truck is decent, plating up anything fried. No healthy options here, yall. If you are going all out, there's a burger with a fried egg and bleu cheese. Nomlicious. There are some fun things to do, if you can brave the Texas summer heat and are up for a game of swatting away Mosquitos with vendettas. Volleyball, horseshoes, etc. Great for large groups. read more

Not family friendly.....no signs anywhere saying you can/can't bring kids in. Brought my toddler in at 6pm and was asked to leave. Lived in austin my whole life and everyone raves about this place. Food trucks suck and take 1 hour to receive food. Go to SABG where they actually allow kids and have signs posted. Seems more of a liability to have dogs on property than an innocent kid. Everything I had hoped it would be after watching their building progress for the past few months!! So incredibly happy that there is a "neighborhood bar" so very close to my home. This is one of those places you have to love for what it is. Trust me when I say this place is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. This place reminds me of a backyard BBQ. When you dress for this place you should keep that in mind. This place is slightly indoor and mostly outdoor. The outdoor area has many tables and chairs placed around the "yard". There are two main bar areas one indoor and one outdoor. They have a lot of seating some chair groupings are surround fire-pits. They also have patio seating and random benches thur the yard. They have two food trucks in the back of the yard. They also have a margarita machine and another machine that makes blended hurricanes. They are totally Yum and if that is your thing make sure you try it. They also have some sort of game that reminds me of horse shoes but it play with little round metal "washers". It was interesting to watch and next time I will make sure I have someone show me how to play. Oh another thing they tend to have live music as well. It's a place to enjoy a low key casual evening. Ladies be warned this is not the place for heels. Lastly I want to mention the parking situation. They have parking in the back, don't be fooled like I was and end up at the place next door that is charging for parking. Moontower doesn't charge for parking. NOT GOOD FOR KIDS! From the looks of it this would be a perfect place for parents to sit outside, listen to music, have a margarita and something from the food truck, while the kids are entertained playing in the sand, running up and down hills, and climbing on the various giant armadillos. Weirdly, kids are only allowed on Sundays. I guess that should've tipped us off. After about 2 hours and 60 dollars with of food and drinks, my husband and I were enjoying the perfect overcast weather in the giant patio, excited to see live music setting up, while the our kids were running around having the time of their lives. We thought we had found our new Sunday spot. All of the other patrons were super nice, as were the he bartenders and food truck employees. The kids were loving petting all the cute puppies on the patio. That's when an older, larger, woman with black hair came up to our table and said that our kids had to have shoes on at all times and that we had to be within touching distance of them at all times, in the rudest tone possible. I get the shoe thing (our two year old has unfortunately learned to take her own shoes off and does it ever chance she gets), but the touching thing? What's the point then? I've never been anywhere with an outside patio where this was a rule. There's no way a two year old and four year old are going to sit down outside, when there's grass, sand, bridges, and armadillos to climb. They were never out of our line of sight and weren't bothering anyone. Several people went out of their way to come tell us how cute they were. We signed out prematurely and I told the lady that there was no TABC rule about hovering over children and she stated repeatedly "It's our policy, It's our policy. We're still a bar. We're still a bar." I still have no idea what that means. Plenty of places sell alcohol and don't require parents to leave their table and stand right next to their kids while they're playing on a patio. Her colleagues apologized for her, but I won't be coming back. I spent way too much money to be treated like that. At the very least she could have told us in a nice, apologetic way, rather than the disparaging, irritated way she did. I think there were some personal issues at play there. Anyways, we'll stick to Little Darlin, La Mancha, ABGB, Cosmic, St.Elmo, Radio Coffee, Yellow Jacket, Sawyer, Gourmands, Contigo...I could go on. Moon tower is a really cool, chill place to hang with friends. The food is pretty good, but expensive. Same for the drinks. My only real issue with the place is that I've never had a good experience with the male bartenders here. They're always grumpy and never helpful at all. All the women behind the bar that I've interacted with are great though. But the guys suck and if I see it's only them behind the bar I try to just order on the tabbedout app before. Second minor issue is that sometimes the tabbedout app just doesn't work when I'm there? No idea why but it's the only place I have that problem. read more

I REALLY wanted to like this place because my friends dad actually helped build this place. Unfortunately, I had a horrible incident with the security (man and woman who works Saturday nights). We were in the photo booth when the security walked over with huge cop lights pointing in our face to demand an ID after we had already bought drinks and showed our ID to the bartender. They grabbed all of our IDS and apologized after barging in the photo booth. They said "Sorry you guys Just look awfully young". Another Solid location for a relaxing time in South Austin. Been coming here for years with friends and we all have had no bad experience or service here. I really like moontower. It can be hot in the summer, but what do you expect of an almost all outdoor bar. They have a large property, volleyball courts, and a handful of yard games. It is great for large groups of people but it can be busy on weekends! The drinks are standard.... similar prices to what you can find downtown but beers, frozen margs, and cocktails. You'll find all kinds of people here. If you're a germ a phob note it's a lot of dirt. We have a puppy and he was all dirty when we left, nothing we care about. Best bar in Texas! This place is a backyard party. Picnic tables and adirondack chairs surround fire pits (covered in summer for tables), fans with misters, washer pits, corn-hole and more. This place can get super busy on weekend nights, however we like to go later afternoon or early evening for Happy Hour and before the crowds. Finally made it all the way down south to Moontowner and was very pleased of the place. While I did not order a single item, we came down to play some volleyball. I was shocked how nice the courts were. All three courts had great sand, lines pre-set and nets set up. They do have a lot of rules about what you can and can't bring out to their courts but for the three hours I was there on a Saturday, not a single person came out to complain about what we brought with us. I've been to the Moontower about a dozen times since they've opened- all before their Grand Opening. (I guess I you could say I couldn't wait for this new cool spot to open.) I think this place is a perfect Austin bar! 1. GREAT outdoor seating and awesome oak trees everywhere! I really believe the owners are environmentalists at heart for keeping all the mature trees. 2. Pretty good beer selection, not all my favorites are represented but that's ok, it'll just help me expand my palate. : ) I do hate that the Shiner is ALWAYS flat. I don't know if something is messed up with the line but every-time I've had a Shiner here it's been flatty, flat, flat. yuck. 3. I do like they have food trailers (but not the BBQ- I don't eat animals and think it's a bad move for any food establishment to not include at-least 1 vegetarian item. 4. The Music, the stage spot is perfect and the acoustics are amazing for the proximity to noisy Manchacha. The band we've heard great and danceable and bring. 5. Parking is a bit of a cluster fuck but they are working it out and expanding the lot. My hubby and I have found the sweet spot of when to go. I don't want to share it with you, because then you would take up my parking spot ; ) 6. They are dog friendly!!! My dogs and I ran/biked there one Saturday afternoon and they loved it! Lots of trees to sniff and pee on. I think Moontower is great! I wanted to like this place so much more, but the service is pretty crappy which is the main reason for the rating. Parking isn't the best, but they did try to expand it to up the hill. They should really get it paved, it would save a lot of haggle for both them and customers. It being outdoors is great, have lights up all the time and gets a bit more festive during the holidays. Really relaxed vibes and some fun outdoor games. (Washers, cornhole, volleyball, etc) the bar is small and takes forever sometimes to get a drink. The staff that walk around to help take drink orders are practically non existent and take over 30 to bring anything back to you and act pissed that you even asked them to do so in the first place. This would honestly just be a cool place to BYOB, but they somehow consider their tiny bar to suffice. They have live entertainment sometimes which isn't bad, but it gets extremely loud. You can sit way far away and still have to yell to talk to your group. Regardless, they need to work on quality and service. read more

One of the waitstaff and the general manager should find new employment in the janitorial arts. It's a huge property with chairs, firepits, and lights scattered throughout the edge of a forest. It's dog friendly so bring out your quadruped buddy, kick back, relax and enjoy the fresh air with a nice selection of local brews to try out. Not to mention there's televisions to watch; pool, volleyball, and yardgames to play; Or simply chill and listen to some music. Have always enjoyed this place and felt bad when armadillo moved in as their competition, so always wanted to support. Came here last Friday after dinner in an Uber. Me and my boyfriend had 2 pieces of pizza leftover in a small takeout box. The bartender told us we couldn't have outside food and was a little sassy about it but we understood. We bought drinks and immediately went to the outskirts to eat the pizza so we wouldn't have it in their establishment. As we are hurriedly trying to finish the pizza, another guy comes by and rudely tell us we can't have outside food. We said we were sorry and are trying to get rid of it. He grabs our box from us and tries to throw it away, and I had to grab the pizza from him. They would rather waste food than let us finish our leftovers, after we had just purchased expensive drinks from them. The whole thing left a sour taste in my mouth. We were trying to be polite and work with their rules but they were going out of their way to be rude. Hard to support them after this situation. read more
