There are no words that can express my heartfelt gratitude for the sacrifices and hardship the " Isei " (First Generation ) must have gone through ! They paved the way for people like both of my grandfathers whom came to the United States in 1906. On May 20th, 1869 a group of 22 samurais and one women arrived in San Francisco on board the SS China with 50,000 (Mulberry Trees) (Silk worm cocoons) (tea plants and seeds) ( cooking utensils) and (swords). Thus the Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Colony Farm was established on 160 acres in Gold Hill Placerville on June 8th, 1869. The life of the colony was short lived (1869 -1871) due to inadequate funding and a severe drought in 1871. Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Colony was considered to be the first Japanese Settlement in North America. In 1969 Ronald Reagan (governor at the time) proclaimed the colony to be a California Historic Landmark No. 815. The land is currently owned and operated by the American River Conservancy. The farm is on private property, so visitations can only be made by arranging a private tours, attending certain festivals on the property or schdueled events. The castle itself is historic with some insanely horrific history to it. I'm not going to say much more it's a great experience. The castle does all different types of events throughout the year, they're most popular is the haunt during Halloween season or throughout October. I went one year it was pretty amazing. My family has gone a few times and loved it. Look forward to this year!! Get your tickets quick because it sells out fast.

Came here for the haunted house event about a week ago and I'm not sure if I would come back again…read more Tickets were $35 each (purchased online) and you have to park and walk about 10-15 minutes to the castle or you can take the little van that drives you there which also takes the same amount of time. We took the van to the castle but they don't drop you off directly in front of the castle so you still have to walk down through security and then to the castle. Porte potty's are available right before security and once you walk up the hill to wait in line to enter the castle. There were a couple food trucks when we went, we were expecting a few based on what was said online but not sure if it depends on the time. We waited over an hour in line to enter the haunted house and if you do really believe in ghosts this place is pretty haunted. The event itself wasn't scary, the actors aren't able to touch you but there's obviously loud screaming and they may be a bit too close for comfort to get a reaction out of you. You do have to climb up and down quite a few stairs and then there's a second part lead outside and back in the castle (barely any lighting and it's a dirt road so you have to carefully walk). Many strobing lights as well so do avoid if you are triggered by that. The energy throughout the castle was not pleasant or welcoming, I was very excited for it to be over as the haunted house itself was not very good and I was mostly tired from all the walking. There's a merch truck outside at the end of the castle as well. We also decided to walk back instead of waiting for the shuttle but there absolutely no lighting and many ditches with uneven flooring so you have to be very careful. Overall experience was not my favorite and I wouldn't come back again.

Before we even stepped into the mine, Gary sat us under a tree and told the story of Virginia City and The Comstock Load. I've lived in Northern Nevada for years, and he still taught me things I had never heard before! It was a great reminder of just how much fascinating history we have right here in our own backyard. I also appreciated how patient and thoughtful he was with everyone in our group, especially the children and those who needed a little extra time walking through the mine. He made sure everyone felt included. As a bonus, Gary is also an author! I ended up buying one of his books (I collect children's books for my office), and he has written other books too. I may have to buy the others with my next visit. Whether you're visiting from out of town, or you've lived here for years, the Chollar Mine Tour is absolutely worth experiencing. We were the last group there, and the two gentlemen working that day went above and beyond. They stayed an hour after closing while my daughter and I waited for a tow truck to unlock my vehicle. They even offered to let me use their own AAA membership to help with the situation. Not once did either of them seem frustrated or inconvenienced, despite having to stay well past closing. Their patience, generosity, and genuine care meant so much to us. Thank you both for turning a stressful situation into a positive experience. After the grounds we visited different rooms in the hotel and got a lesson on some of the energy tools they use to understand and communicate with the ghosts. The directions were not clear as to where we were supposed to arrive. There was no address to meet at. After going back and forth with customer service, they eventually gave a landmark, which did not exist in the uber and Lyft apps and was questionable on Google Maps. Everyone in their uber got dropped off to different places. The directions also said to go to "the yellow building" -- but when we arrived, there were several yellow buildings. The tour guide also was not carrying a lantern, which was part of the directions given (look for the person carrying a lantern.) When we finally found her, we asked the tour guide where her lantern was, she said she didn't want to carry it around all night. We also believe the tour guide was late. We were in the area looking for her for about 15 minutes and we passed by the same spot she ended up being at several times and did not see anyone. Finally they called and we went back to the spot and she was there. This was around 5 minutes past the start time. Then she told us we only have until 7:30. So we are ending on time but she didn't start on time? The tour guide took us around to several bars, but the first one she admitted that it was not even haunted, or that she was not sure if the bar was haunted or not as she was not familiar with the bar. So I'm confused why we went there? There was also no indication that this was only going to be an hour and a half. It was fun bar hopping with our friends in some spooky places, but considering I paid almost three hundred dollars for the group I expected a higher quality experience.

I remember taking the mine tour and being amazed that it is a part of our local history. I met some friends on a chilly Friday evening for drinks and karaoke. There was quite the crowd already at 8pm and I could tell it was a popular local watering hole. All the patrons were singing along with each karaoke guest and having a great time. The bartender was a very nice guy that was doing a great job keeping up with everyone despite being the only one behind the bar that night. We made sure to tip him well. He was slinging fresh cocktails, fresh draft pours, and some ready to drink cocktails. A couple of us put our names and song choices in for karaoke, the DJ had pretty much everything available to him. The songs ranged from classic rock, classic country, modern rock, modern country, 80's chart toppers, and some obscure songs that a number of locals got pumped up to hear! The Black Chasm Cavern is located in the tiny town of Volcano which really feels like a step back…read morein time. I loved that this tour includes some amazing and beautiful natural wonders as well as a little bit of history. The place was very easy to find and a quick 30 min or so drive from Jackson. There is a lovely little store to check out before or after your tour as well. The chasm is a cool 58 degrees which was nice on this 90 degree-ish day. It is a little on the steep side with lots of stairs and a few areas where you definitely need to duck from the rocks but was worth it! The limestone cavern is just amazing with breathtaking stalagmite, stalactite and very rare helictite formations. These helictites look like they defy gravity and grow in amazing curling directions. Incredibly, there is a blue lake at the very bottom of the cavern that can be seen from way above - unfortunately we are unable to access that far down but man I wish I could! We learned the lake has tiny little shrimp that live in the pure crystal waters and the only place they are known to exist, mind blowing. Our tour guide was great and shared so much knowledge and history. History: The chasm was discovered in 1854 long after the Miwok people had already lived in the area. Of course, the discoverers wanted to try and cash in on their discovery so they began charging folks and would literally lower them by rope into a hole in the ground with some candles precariously balanced on a plank of wood. Luckily we have stairs and nicely built platforms with cave lighting to see this amazing magical national landmark. Definitely worth the visit!

It's super convenient that it's the only cave tour in the area open every day of the week (minus holidays). Our guide was wonderfully friendly, knowledgeable, and patient with all our questions. The stairs throughout the cavern were easily manageable for all the kids--even our 5-year-old handled them with no problem! The tour wasn't crowded at all, which made the entire experience much more relaxed and enjoyable. **A quick tip for future visitors:** Tours start on the hour, so time your arrival for just before to avoid a long wait. It's first-come, first-served, and while there are benches to relax on, there isn't much to do on-site if you end up having to wait for the next slot. Overall, it was a perfect outing and a memorable experience for the whole family. Highly recommended!
