I enjoyed my visit here. Its not far from Jackson rancheria casino. We had a great guide who explained all about the cavern. It's a nice place to cool off in the summer. Its not ambulatory friendly and has a narrow staircase. Its a tight squeeze but not too uncomfortable. It's a cool sight to see. Make a day of it and research other attractions in the area. Have a picnic or try your luck gambling nearby. read more

It's an awesome cavern with a great tour guide! It's about an hour long and very humorous! The cave is extremely pretty inside with lots of stalagmites and stalactites. There's also really rare cave formations that exist in only a handful of caves WORLDWIDE. Definitely worth the trip! I got a speeding ticket there cause the drive was so fun! Very cool educational opportunity to learn about the Black Chasm Cavern. Our guide Jason was super friendly, very knowledgeable and entertaining. It is important to be careful going in. It is a vertical cave so you go down stairs some are steep. Not an issue going down but definitely can wind you coming back up. If you like exploring, learning a bit about geology and history and want to see some cool crystal formations this is for you. There are restrooms on-site at check in. No food, water, selfie sticks or backpacks in the cave. read more

This was a great tour and our tour guide, Bobbi, was very friendly and knowledgeable. My husband has a great fear of heights, as do I, but he was really unprepared for the steps and how high above they were from below in certain areas. Bobbi was very understanding and fortunately we made it through. There were 3 parts of the caverns that we went through and the formations were truly beautiful. However, the steps are very steep, so be aware of that. Also the parking lot near the visitor center is small, although fortunately there's overflow parking nearby. This is a great excursion, especially for those who like looking at beautiful rock formations and are interested in geology. read more

Took the kids on a day trip and they did the panning for stones. They had a great time there and we loved everything and the cute store. I like that the store had cheap and expensive items, staff was very knowledgeable. Only thing I wish is maybe more things for kids exploration so that people want to go back more than once. read more

What an awesome experience! Out in Volcano, CA, there is Black Chasm Cavern, a national Landmark! They have tours on a first come first serve basis. Tours are around $20 a person, but they do offer military and senior discounts. With military discount it came out to $16 a person. The tours are limited to 20 in a group each hour. We started at 11 and ended about 11:45. I can't believe this cave has been well preserved since the 1850s during the gold rush times. It's so neat and beautiful inside, it doesn't even look real! We were able to go down around 100 feet under and into the cave. There's about 150 wooden stairs going down. It's pretty steep and moist so be careful! Staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Cute gift shop as well. Definitely recommend visiting! :) read more

My husband and I had so much fun at the Black Chasm Cavern!! It is cliche but really apt to say that it is "fun for kids of all ages". During our trip, we parked in the first / lower lot and took the very short (around 1/4 mile) "hike" (but really more like an easy walking trail) up to the gift shop. We bought our tickets for the cave tour there, then decided to look around while we waited. We discovered the sifting station right away, so we went back into the shop to buy the "bags of dirt" that has various rocks and minerals mixed in so that we could play "mineral panning". We are adults and we don't have kids, but we still had a blast putting our dirt in the pans, finding the various types of rocks & minerals, and using the handy little chart they gave us to identify them. Then we went back into the shop to look around at the various crystals / minerals they have and found that there is a geode cracking station!! My husband spent at least 20 minutes trying to pick the perfect geode to crack and it was so much fun watching him turn the crank until the rock cracked in half and revealed the beauty inside! Finally, we went to wait for the cave tour on the viewing platform. The cave was nice and chilly inside, so that was a really nice change of pace for such a hot day. Our tour guide was so funny and we learned so much about stalactites, stalagmites, and other formations. We originally traveled to Sutter Creek for wedding prep, but now we also have this absolutely marvelous memory doing all these fun, silly things together at Black Chasm Cavern and I can't express how much that means to us. This place was pretty cool! We came up on a Sunday afternoon (nice that they're open on Sundays) and when we got here there was only one other couple in the parking lot. I thought this would be cool as it would just be a couple of us on this tour, however, the parking lot filled up fast. Each guided tour is about 20 or so minutes long. The stairs are very narrow, steep, slippery and the ceiling can get low...be cautious. If you're bringing children under five be sure, they can follow direction as I can see accidents happening. As you're walking down, there are three platforms that you stop at to take pictures and learn of the history. They do have some benches in there for you to rest if needed. If you're wearing sunglasses on your hats or behind your head, just know that if you look over the stair rail they can fall and you won't be able to get them back. I suggest wearing shoes with some traction...due to the natural moisture in the cave the floors are slippery. The parking lot is not too big and can fill up fast. I do believe there's extra parking in a lot right before the main parking lot. There's a cool gift shop that sells sweaters, hats, rings, salt lamps and a few refreshments. They also have restrooms attached to the building. As you're leaving/entering, there is a turn out right before you turn on the road to get into the caves. If you park there and go down to your right, you'll see some stairs that lead to a Trail. This Trail will take you to a place that used to do hydraulic mining during the gold rush era and what was left behind are giant pillars of marble. This was a nice little pit stop the tour guide told us about when we purchased our tickets...glad we went! P.S. They accept cash and Apple Pay. Oh and be prepared to be out of breath as you exit the cave...unless your cardio game is on point lol. Have fun!! read more

Didn't know what to expect from the tour walking in. My experience was pleasant, guides are highly informative and very knowledgeable about the history of the location. The tour itself you have to go down a lot of different staircases and have to watch your head on a couple sections. If I had to estimate I'd say it's about the equivalent of going down about 3-4 floors of stairs. The temperature of the cavern honestly wasn't too bad although if you get cold easily you may want to bring a sweatshirt. read more

I did the Middle Earth Splunking at California Caverns and it was amazing! I felt so lucky to have 2 guides, and I was the only person who signed up that day. I had a blast learning about all the cool formations inside the caves, learning the history and having great laughs with my guides Isaack and Gigi! Highly recommend doing this at least once in a lifetime! I'm still buzzing from the experience and all the fun I had! It was 3 hours but it went by so fast! I can't wait to do it again! read more

This was a great place for a day trip. We were staying in Angels Camp so it was a little over an hour drive to get there and it's the only cave/cavern tour that is open every day of the week. (Minus holidays) Our guide was super friendly and informative and she answered any and all questions. The stairs were easy for all the kids to handle, our youngest being barely 5. There was not a big crowd at all so it made the tour more enjoyable. They start at the top of each hour so definitely get there right before that hour starts so you don't have to wait around for the next tour. It is based on a first come basis so if there is a large crowd you may have to wait anyways. There is benches to sit on but not much to do to keep busy for more than that hour wait time if you don't time it right. Overall it was a perfect outing for our family and was something we to see. read more

The cave was 150 feet underground where the temperature was a comfortable 58 degrees Fahrenheit. The stairs leading down were solid and manageable. The proctors were knowledgeable about the geological formations and how they were formed, as well as, how they resembled some animals. They also told how the original discoverer of the cave thought he had found a gold mine but instead turned into a tourist attraction in mid 1800. It was a great experience. read more
