My husband probably would have preferred a swift kick to the crotch over the painful realization that you are allowed to shoot rifles in this forest, and we had left all of ours at home. We aren't hunters, but do enjoy shooting outdoors. Nothing's less fun than counting the seconds between shots at the range. This campground seems small to me, but I don't do a lot of camping in numbered sites that you have to reserve. I like wilderness camping where youre required to obtain a fire permit and you dig a hole each time you need a restroom break. The bathrooms here are clean and pretty frequent. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire pit. Reservations are made online and the $22 fee has a $9 processing charge. You have to make them several days in advance (even moreso if there's a specific site you want). We couldn't book for Friday night so we made a Saturday night only reservation. It's first come, first serve if you don't have a reservation but they put something on the site saying the days its reserved. So we pretty much saved ourselves the processing fee for one night. I wrote the host a check upon arrival. I love writing checks. The friendly camp host called off a puppy that was looking mischievously at me and it went back to its own site. There are signs saying leashes are required, but I think well-behaved dogs that are obedient are the most important thing. The host sells wood and you can get a large amount for $20. There is drinking water available but you should probably bring your own food and drinks. No other food sold here but it's not all that far of a drive from the nearest town. 30 minutes perhaps? I stayed here in February 2010 and again Sept 2013. The only difference was the water level. The river was moving a lot faster and higher in Feb. The first time I stayed here was because the road to my regular spot was snowed in. It wasn't a bad spot to return to, but I imagine there are lots of other campgrounds in this area to check out as well, if you like camping somewhere you can see other people. Note: The greatest thing about this place is that it's handicap-friendly. They have pathways to the water and all around that are pedestrian and wheelchair friendly. How awesome is that! Handicamping. We enjoyed walking on these pathways. We noticed they have better tree coverage above you. Which was great for us, since it was raining the last day of summer, but would also be nice for shade on the hot summer days. read more

If I could give a half star I would make it 3 1/2. I think this place was beautiful, relatively easy to get to from sac (an hour 45 min), and had pretty decent weather. It was 75 during the day and prob aroud 40s at night in may 2016. The water was crazy cold! It took lots of guts or liquid courage but I made it in the river. The boardwalk was nice and had a paved trail along the river which is great for strollers or wheelchairs. We occupied space 49 which is almost dead last on the site map. But it was huuge it had room for like 5 tents. And I liked being at the end there was less traffic. The reasons I gave it less stars may not be deal breakers for you. The toilets were vaulted, I normally do flush toilets. Yes I know you are camping and you should rough it a bit but I like that convinience. They definitely smelled mid day and the fly situation was unpleasant. I also wish there were more trails, I only saw the main path along the river and it was under a mile so there isn't much to explore. We also saw no overflow parking so I'm not sure where people can park if you have more than 3 vehicles. Last minor annoyance were insects. I got camping every year so I know about bugs but they were kind of relentless come 5 o'clock for a good hour or so. I normally don't get bit but I am desperately trying to not scratch my 9 mosquito bites. So if none of that bothers you I would recommend this place. The host was nice, the spot was big, the river was beautiful. All in all a good trip. read more

Love this place! Paved trail that runs alongside the river as well as a boardwalk. Water levels were not dangerously high (in my opinion). My 4 year old and I walked up stream with 4 other older kiddos. Deepest part was thigh high. Currents were slow while we were there in late August. When we were there during spring the water was too rough and cold. Lot 17 is our all time favorite. With a larger group, I'd highly recommend lot 17, 10 &11. Easy access to each other, the bathrooms, river, shade, space and trail. The host is nearby. Very nice and friendly. The place is well kept and extremely family and kid friendly. There were handicap accessibility signs here and there. There's also handicap lots. Be sure to take your paint and do some river rock painting. Gather twine to weave a basket and there's plenty of dirt for dump trucks and digging just for fun. There's also random places along the river for some nice beachside play as well as some decks to look off of into the river. It's lush, green, and filled with natural habitats. Woke up to birds chirping, oddly one trip there, we woke up to a heard of cows. Theres food bees and misquotes, but not too bad to where it's unbearable. I would recommend that you don't forget the bug spray. While there, we didn't use sunblock much. Only when we were in direct sunlight while playing in the river. It is a small campsite so don't expect tons of hiking and just enough for little ones. In June we did a 4 family camping trip and had 4 autistic children mild-severe. Parents felt all the children enjoyed themselves and felt it was a safe environment for exploration. I personally found it to be tranquil and peacefully calm. I made room for morning mediation and feel asleep to the sounds of the river flowing downstream. The campsite has no wifi. You will have to drive approximately 30min back onto Ono Ranch to get connection. Closest store is in Plymouth-an hour away. read more

Recently stayed here for a couple nights. The area and scenery were spectacular! The campground it remote and there is absolutely no service so we had to rely on good old map to get us there as not much signage for the campground. The water was a lot colder then I was expecting but it was so clear and gorgeous just can't help but get in. Our campsite was #48 and was pretty spacious. There was a yellow jacket hive close by so really put a damper on the trip. We could not cook anything with out getting swarmed. And I mean swarmed! easily 100 yellow jackets were all over our bbq and eating the meat right off of the grill as trying to cook. Got a relief from the jackets down at the river which is where we spent most of our time. Was very peaceful and can hear the running water as we slept. They do sell firewood at the campground and also allowed to burn down wood. Tip for other campers if not wanting to cook then take a short drive to Cooks station just down the road. It's about 20-30min drive from the campground but well worth it and they have some of cheapest wood we have come across while camping. Was a gorgeous little campground to get away from it all. read more

I always have a hard time reviewing campsites I love because I don't want the word to get out! :) We reserved online a couple months in advance and were surprised to see a campsite available for Labor Day. We lucked out on the one we picked because it was well shaded and large enough for two tents. The drive to get there is easy but definitely make sure you have everything you need because even though Pioneer is close, it will take you about 15 - 20 minutes to get back to highway 88 from the campsite. Ed, one of the camp hosts, was a great help and fun to talk with! We bought our firewood from him because we had read online that it's important to get wood from the forest that you are staying in. Also the camp hosts were great about cleaning the vault toilets and they were pretty clean considering what they are. There are a few different places you can go into the river at to float in the water. On the weekends, it can get really crowded with families which was fine most of the time but if you want to float in peace and quiet, you might want to shoot to be there on a weekday. There are also a lot of people who come up to the river for just day use. The campground was close enough to Pioneer that it was about a 25 minute drive each way on our third day to go get ice to replenish our coolers. read more

Reserved a double site and came here with a group of friends. We have been to many camp sites together and we all agree that this place is at the top of our list! This place has quiet hours but not super strict on it, which isn't a problem. Camping is meant to be fun people! Other campers made noise but it was never an issue since they were far and were just having fun not being rowdy. Anyway, let's get to the point. Here is why it is at the top of our list: #1. Cleanest, most up kept vault toilets I have ever encountered! Thank you to the two host who live there and clean it pretty much everyday. #2. The site #35 I believe. Clean, beautiful and huge enough space for 5 tents. Loved! #3. River. Camped around the end of August so water dropped but still found a couple spots great to swim in. Also, great rocks to relax on if you just wana tan! #4. The Hosts. Our site was pretty close to both hosts who live at the site. We met them both and they are super friendly and helpful. -Btw, for all who own firearms and wondering if there is a place to shoot well guess what?! Yes there is. read more

There's no cell coverage, the river is very cold to attempt to swim in, $5 for a bin of firewood is very expensive, the perfectly fine drinking water is annoying, there are too many stars out at night, the moonrise might wake you up, and the white noise from the river helped me sleep too well. Occupied sites 31 & 32: Good size sites, neighbors were not too close, bathrooms not too far & shaded most of the day (but not during high noon hours). The Host drove around a lot, but never bothered us. Beautiful river running through the campground with a unique walkway along side it. Most of the campground is shaded by tall trees. We've camped in many campgrounds & honestly, we fell in love with this campground. The river is so peaceful & so convenient to walk along. Other; 1) You will be disconnected from all electronic services (which I appreciated). 2) Going to town is 45 to an hour round trip. 3) I heard NO off road vehicles in the 4 days we were there, but there are places to ride your OHV outside of the campground. 4) There are campsites you can reserve along side the river. 5) Bathrooms are "vaulted" (out-house style), but clean & did not smell when we were there. 6) Fire pits & BBQs at the camp sites. 7) Drinking water spickets throughout the campground. 8) Fire wood for sale at the Host's camp site (unsure of price). 9) We use reserveamerica.com to make all of our camping reservations. 10) Make sure to print directions (maybe even take a map) --this place is 6 miles down into a valley of the national forest & street signs are small & some are easy to miss. Your cell phone GPS will likely lose service before get to the trickiest parts of getting there 11) On-leash dogs allowed. read more

The reviews so far have been fairly accurate. It's a nice campground with very nice campground hosts. It's a great place for RV camping and ATV enthusiasts. Unfortunately we were looking to get away and do some nice peaceful camping; my fault for not doing better research. There are a lot of campsites. I suggest avoiding anything near the toilets as they tend to smell worse as the day goes on. The camp hosts are very good at trying to keep them clean but they can only do so much. Note that there is drinking water available but there are no showers and only vault toilets. Not the place for peace and quiet. The camp hosts are nice; they drive around the campground on golf carts frequently. Unfortunately this adds to the traffic noise with all the trucks with their trailers driving around. You will hear ATVs all day long, sunrise to sundown and apparently there's a place nearby where you can do some target shooting. Quiet time at 10pm was strictly enforced, which was nice. Not that it needed to be enforced, most of the campers were families that went to bed early. Seemed like a great place to bring kids, everyone there seemed to have them. The campground is next to a creek and there is a place where a tree had fallen over it, acting like a bridge, where you can jump off into a small swimming hole. Campsites are well maintained. We most likely won't go back but if you are into RVs, ATVs, guns, and pretty and well maintained campgrounds, then I would recommend this place to you. read more

The walking trail is great, although I wouldn't choose a site right there on it, seemed to lack any semblence of privacy for those folks. Camp host was great, the campground was overall quiet and no issues with noise from other campers after dark. Bathrooms were great. Probably my favorite campground, not because of all it offers, but because this is where my hubby asked me to marry him. Anyway.... I love that Pipi is completely in the middle of NOWHERE. It's tucked away off of hwy 88 in the Eldorado National Forest back in the midst of ATV roads. The campgrounds are running along the middle fork cosumnes river, I'd say about a mile stretch of the river. You can bring an inner tube and start at the high end of the river and work your way all the way down then walk on back up. There are a few small "beaches" where families and kids spend the day splashing around in the water. At the high end of the river there's somewhat of a swimming hole where everyone loves to take a dip on a hot summer day. Other than a river there is a mile long trail along the river that offers wonderful views of meadows and such. It's lovely to walk the trail at different times of the day to see the beauty of the area at sunrise or sunset. They have RV sites, trailer sites, group sites, and tent only sites. The group sites are great if you're going camping with a bunch of people, most are pretty secluded and you can party hard with out bothering others. We have our favorite sites, but I would hate to announce them here on Yelp, I suggest going yourself walking the entire campground and finding something you might love. Also I'm sure people will complain about the vault toilets and no showers, but this is good campin! Sure it maybe car camping, but I love camping like this, NO cell phone service, NO flushing toilets, NO sinks, NO showers, just you and nature, a fire pit, running water, and hopefully some nice neighbors. My husband and I took the kids to PiPi last minute. The drive was scenic and there are many windy roads to get there. Driving through the El Dorado National Forest was beautiful. Tips - Make sure you have everything that you need packed before you descend into the campground. Reserve online if you want a specific site. Do not choose a site too close to the restrooms. You can definitely smell them. Pros- - I liked the fact that they have fire wood available and the host will bring it to your site. - The sites have tables and a grill. - The creek is clear, still and beautiful I. Certain areas. - The host is helpful and knowledgeable about the sites - so peaceful, we could hear the running water from the creek at night Cons- - no small store on site for ice or anything that you forget to pack - extremely quiet at night, everything echoes, hopefully you are with a quiet group - you are definitely going to get dirty, no showers - yellow jackets, flies and mosquitos - bring repellent, citronella candles and netting We would love to go back more prepared, when the children are older. read more

PiPi is a great campground to get away from it all and appreciate California redwoods' beautiful nature. It's a perfect spot to bring your dirt bikes and quads to check out the different off roading trails. There is a creek that runs through the main campground and plenty of hiking trails. Dog friendly and the kids absolutely love it. Just be aware that sometimes of the year there are lots of mosquitoes. Though this time, luckily there weren't any. read more

I like the campground it's spacious and not super close to other campsites. There's a nice river running along the campground and a stroller/handicap accessible trail. However the camp hosts were not inviting or friendly to us. I don't want to make it a race thing but it is what it is. We went to the host to buy firewood and we said hi and asked about firewood and about 4-6 of them were congregating around a picnic bench/table. They weren't eating dinner they were just sitting around. They literally just sat there staring at us as if we just dropped from the sky. We timidly asked again and finally one guy got up to help. I will go back again and give it another shot only because I liked the campground. Hopefully we will have a better experience next time around. read more

Sites 30 and 31 with meadow and night sky views- good privacy. Board walk along creek handicap accessible, good price on firewood. Our favorite campground we've been going since 1971 when it was free and there were no campsites, and it took 45 minutes to get from Omo Ranch Road to travel 6 miles into the campground on a dirt fire road. Now it's paved all the way and takes about 15 minutes to go the 6 miles in! The reason we like it is because you don't run to a store every day because it's too far to go so you take everything with you the first time but you can go get ice at a little store and restaurant just outside the campground east 1 mile on highway 88 at Cooks Station. And of course, if you have to go to a store for major things or hardware store is just a few miles west on highway 88. We love this place because it's next to the Middle Fork of the Consumnes River, and it has a wheelchair access from one end of the campground clear to the other end, with a paved or a wooden walkway. There are flat rocks where you can put your chairs right in the river, swim or tube down the river, or build the dam with the rocks that are in the river. A great place for families and the Camp Hosts are wonderful! read more

Took a drive here yesterday, a little tricky to find but well worth the effort!! Put it in Google Maps and it will take you right to it. Yes, composing toilets but they were fine. Met the Campground Host, he looked like Sasquatch but was very friendly and helpful! Water faucets through out the place, single, double and triple camping sights. Best to make Reservations through Reserve America to insure your sight. Some sights are on the Creek and some are on the River, so if you have little ones that may wash away be aware. Beautiful place, some may not think it's worth the effort to drive in but I do! If you like dry camping. No Dump Station. read more

The river is beautiful and a nice place to dip in and cool off. There's a nice walking path that follows along the river. It also has some picnic tables for day use. read more

Lucked out with some last minute Fri-Sat reservations for Memorial Day weekend at this campground just under two hours from Sacramento. The sites were spacious, most right along the river, and we were nicely tucked away in one of the last on the loop #49 which meant we didn't get a lot of traffic. The site was huge, could have easily accommodated at least 4 tents. They have a few "group sites" which can host up to 18 people, unsure why they didn't make this a group site as well. Logistics: no bear boxes or bear warnings- not sure how this is possible but it was nice to not worry about. Plenty of faucets with clean water, signage instructed for drinking only - not cleaning. Vault toilets are a downside, while kept very clean, in the heat of the day the flies and smell just can't be avoided. Use them in the morning and at night to avoid the worst of it, in the day go au natural and use the river. The hosts were friendly and made routine sweeps through the loop emptying trash and checking the restrooms. If you buy wood, they'll deliver it straight to your camp. The river was lovely to hear throughout the campground and had a nice paved and bridged walkway alongside the entire grounds, my guess about a mile each way. There are many spots along the river suitable for sunbathing and dipping in the shallow waters, even more of a sandy little area for the little ones. The water is cold to say the least but it can be...refreshing. I wish there were more trail options to take advantage of and the bugs are killer for about an hour each dusk, but other than that this is a nice little spot! read more

Do NOT let Yelp or Google maps direct you to this campground. It will take you down a narrow path towards Tioga Lane in Shingle Springs and down someone's private driveway. Google Maps told us to "park on Tioga Lane and prepare to walk." Well, that would have been quite a walk considering we were nowhere near this campground. Over all quite an adventure. We will try the longitude/latitude map next time that is provided by Reserve America. read more

This is my favorite camping spot! The river is awesome, great for putting your chair in and keeping your feet in the water while enjoying the sun, dogs swimming, drink in your hand. The Camp Hosts are always helpful and have a good balance of checking in and driving by in case you need something and also leaving you be to enjoy your camping trip. Great little walk by the water on a trail. Bathrooms smell sometimes, but what would you expect? I always camp here. Ill camp here again and again! read more

I thought the last person's review to be funny. This is only because she drove up to my Uncle's house on Tioga Lane. The map on Yelp says that the campground is near my Uncle's house. However, this is not the case. It is way out towards Kirkwood. I don't know how this happened, but I thought I should bring it to someone's attention. I've inquired about staying here, and Yelp logistics are way off. Hopefully something doesn't happen to another person that happened to the user that went to my Uncle's house. read more

This place is the best. I don't ATV but it is a beautiful place to do it. If you don't ATV don't stay away. This is not a noisy ATV park by any means. The trails are far enough away from the camp area and behind the trees. Plan for a windy drive to get there but that keeps the crowds away too. My family and I have visited many times. Late spring/early summer makes for beautiful meadows. Great swimming holes. Great, friendly staff. Great trails and an amazing wheelchair accessible trail and boardwalk along the river. Was prepared for the worst reading the reviews about ATV noise and rifle ranges. Neither was an issue. We heard ATVs maybe 6-7 times the whole day on Memorial day Sunday, so while annoying not horrible. We got site 50 which is alllll the way at the end and steps from the creek. Great location, too good in fact because people kept walking thru our site to get to the little swimming hole right near 50, til we strew our stuff around the site to kind of force people to walk around, which worked. Overall it was worth it cuz we were right next to the creek which is a pleasant sounds to sleep to, though fireing the day the privacy was nil. Host guy was nice and brought us the bundle of firewood we wanted, $5. Weather was mid 80s at the campground which it was 95-100 down in the valley. Overnight low around 50 read more

Our family enjoyed this campground and we would definitely return. I agree with the other 2 & 5 star reviews here. Hadn't occurred to me, but I suppose what one person likes about this campground others may dislike. We learned that several families have been coming to this campground for 30 and 40 years (before it was even built up into car camping sites), so some people obviously love it. While there were ATV roads on the way in to the campground, we never heard any noise from those vehicles. We were in a higher numbered site close to the river, so perhaps those were more isolated from the ATV noise we never experienced. Sites: All different types of sites as previous reviewers describe. Offers several sites for large groups, if that suits your needs. Some sites were on top of each other and exposed to one another. Others were very spread apart and felt relatively private. Camp Hosts: We enjoyed our camp host (Chris; and there are 2 hosts, one on each end). He must be one of the most friendly, helpful, hardworking camp hosts in existence. When we arrived at our pre-registered site, Chris showed up in his golf-cart and suggested we follow him if we wanted to consider foregoing our 1st night's reservation fee for a much better site. We had yet to unpack so followed Chris to two other "first-come-first-served" sites, and picked one that I'm sure was much better than the one we blindly picked when making a reservation. Camp hosts also deliver firewood to you. River: One of the main reasons we would return to this campground is the river with close proximity to most all camp sites. Great fun for kids and adults. Shallow swim hole/pools for small kids, deeper rock jumping areas for bigger kids. Beach/flat rock areas for lazing around. Love the sound of the river while falling asleep and waking in the morning. read more

Pipi Campground is a beautiful campground. We stayed at campsite #51. The camp host was friendly and attentive. It was close to the pit toilets and a spigot. The river was easily accessable, although had a fast current due to the time of year we went (Early May 2018). My husband is an avid fisherman and he caught one fish with difficulty, thus not great fishing. There were no showers at the campground, which did not bother us but would bother some. The downfall to our trip is that the beautiful walkway that runs along the river was closed. They hadthe first bridge closed for no apparent reason and at another spot along the trail because a tree had fallen onto the second bridge, which is understandable why it would be closed at that particular spot. Because of these two closures ot was difficult to find a good way to get to the most beautiful part of the trail that runs on boardwalks next to the river and a small meadow. Overall we WILL return in the future to Pipi. And hope that next time the path will be open and water will be calmer. read more

As secluded as this place is, it's got everything you need. By no means a primitive campsite, the bathrooms are clean, there is firewood for purchase, and running water. The entire campground sits along a small creek, which was great for cooling off. A lot of what makes or break this campground is what site you get. We were in site #1, which is at the entrance. It was small, but we had enough room. The higher numbered sites definitely feel more secluded and more like you're in the middle of a forest. Also, I could see how the buzzing of motor bikes could bother some people, but we stopped noticing after a while. read more
