The campground itself is absolutely beautiful, but unfortunately the staff made our experience very unpleasant. The staff was extremely rude and, at times, had a very aggressive approach when addressing us. Their communication felt unnecessarily confrontational rather than helpful or professional. The website also does not accurately advertise what guests should expect during their stay, which was very frustrating. Throughout the day, we felt like we were constantly being bothered and watched by staff. What made the experience even worse was hearing staff talk about us afterward. That is extremely unprofessional and made us feel uncomfortable during our stay. It's a shame because the campground is beautiful and has so much potential, but the way guests are treated can really ruin the experience. After this experience, I honestly don't know if I'll ever come back. I hope management takes these concerns seriously and works on improving both customer service and the accuracy of the information provided on the website. read more

We were really happy to get a spot at the last minute, to camp one last time this season. The weather is cooler, but it's so much nicer without the Summer crowds. When we arrived, we were told the bears were very active, which in this area, they usually are. There are alot of signs informing the public they are in Bear Country and what to do if they come across one. There's also information on the proper way to store food, so the bears can't get to it. Unfortunately, we see the carelessness from campers all of the time. It's very frustrating, especially when you hear a bear and cub may be euthanized because they have gotten too comfortable approaching people at the campsites and could be a danger. This place is beautiful and the bears are a treasure. If you camp here, please be responsible! Aside that, we love this campground. Staff are always very pleasant and helpful. read more

My little family had an amazing time at Fallen Leaf Campground! We stayed in a yurt (#site 200) and had ample space. The site itself has a large picnic table, campfire ring, park-type style bench, bbq grill, and soooo much surrounding nature for kids to explore and play. Walk to the lake and hiking trail is less than 10 mins. All of the hosts and workers there were amazing and so helpful. We're definitely coming back! read more

I've RV camped at Fallen Leaf a couple times now and the campground is terrific, has a nice and clean RV dump station, water fill stations throughout, clean bathrooms and showers, and a general store where you can get basic supplies (including ice!). It's a beautiful place, but I had a few issues on my last particular trip. First, all the host staff that I dealt with were VERY rude and accusatory. My space (102) was advertised for a 30' RV plus 1 vehicle. My RV is 24' and barely fit, which didn't allow my vehicle to be parked on the pavement easily. Immediately after unhooking, several staff rushed over and literally screamed at me telling me I needed to park on the pavement or that I'll be fined and towed. I had 2 wheels on torn up dirt, barely off the pavement. I debated them stating what their site advertised, to no avail. So, I ended up getting my truck between two large trees and an inch from my RV to make it work because the main road is a good distance from the campground. I made it work, but the way the staff treated me was disrespectful and rude to say the least. My group had several other brushes with the staff and said the same thing with their encounters. You'd think that being a host at this campground would be a vacation-like work and total utopia but apparently not. My other issue is because the lake is a over a hill a ways from the campground, they only have one small parking lot that they make you pay extra to use, even if you're staying there. We got yelled at for taking 2 minutes to unload our beach stuff. So, a loading zone would be nice. Not sure if I'll be back, there's plenty of other campground where I don't get disrespected. read more

First time staying at this campground and we loved it! Most of the campground is pretty shaded which was so nice. We didn't need to put up any shade structures at our site. Everyone was very friendly. The campsite is very level and perfect for riding bikes. The bathrooms have real toilets and showers and we're pretty clean. We loved our stay! The only weird thing is that we purchased a parking pass for the parking lot to be closer to the lake since we had kayaks to bring in. The lady that sold us the pass told us that she sells unlimited passes, despite there only being about 20 spots. We asked if that meant that even though we purchase a spot, does that mean there's a possibility of not getting a spot? And she said yes! I don't understand this method of selling parking passes. They should find a better way otherwise they are just taking peoples money for no reason... we bought a pass at 7:30 am and went up to the lot at 9am and we got one of the last spots. That's a big bummer for anyone else buying a pass. read more

Just returned from a stunning week at Fallen Leaf Campground. It was absolutely beautiful. Camp hosts are so friendly and helpful, they're working really hard to keep the place clean and running smoothly. Be kind to them. There are definitely BEARS. the Bear horns DO. NOT. WORK. bears are acclimated to hearing the horns. Your best bet is to keep everything in the bear box, as much as possible. And when you make dinner, do it early, and cleanup early. If a bear comes around. BANG the bear box, with a metal water bottle, or something like that. Yell, get big AND get out of the way. Campground is beautiful dense with trees, fairly well spaced, most people are really kind and respectful. It is mixed use, so RVs and tents together. The lake is exquisite. Water temperature perfect for swimming. Do bring water shoes as the shore is a little rocky. read more

Fallen leaf campground is beautiful just like all the other campgrounds around Lake Tahoe and that is the only good thing to say about Fallen Leaf campground. The staff is rude and belligerent and if they worked at my company they would be fired. When I go on vacation I want to unwind and relax and Fallen Leaf campground is NOT the place to do that. There are a lot of other great campgrounds in the area so I recommend anywhere else but Fallen Leaf campground. This is the first time that I have ever given a review on line but a week after I left Fallen Leaf campground I am still disturbed about there poor customer service. The campground is 5stars, the best. Not too thrilled with the hosts this year, new group this year. I did not have any personal issues with them, but they were the grumpiest I've experienced their. The customer service here leaves quite a bit to be desired. I was surprised by how we were treated coming in just for a day. The assumption was that we would violate their parking policy. As the spaces are tight they feel some pressure I guess. While we followed their instructions, when their staff changed shifts they bothered us each time with really negative attitudes. For a beautiful campground the staff left a terrible impression. To be treated poorly without reason is pretty shabby. read more

I was assaulted by the manager of the park. I had to go to the ER via ambulance and have been in bed on a pain medication and a muscle relaxer. Great way to spend my vacation in South Lake Tahoe. The manager and her husband are very rude and will gang up on you for no reason. I think the rest of the staff are afraid them. This was my second time coming here and I LOVE it. BEARS: We stayed for a couple of days and saw black bears. I thought they were brown bears at first because of the color of their fur, but they're black so it was definitely a relief! Just know that the bears won't hurt you so don't be so scared. They only want food and view the campground as their buffet. They were so used to the campground that they weren't fazed when we were blowing whistles, honking our cars, clanking pans. Our neighbors had their dog's medicine stolen from the bears because they left dog treats with the medicine unsecured. Long story short: leave food in bear lock, and don't worry! BEAR LOCK: The bear lock is a must and it's super sturdy! If closed right, the bears can't get in. Our camp neighbors had a lot of incident with the bears where they ate their food. Make sure to get what you want out of the bear box and lock everything else up, unless you want to see a few bears at your campsite! BEARS AND TENT: Don't leave any food in tent should be something obvious. But the people there also warned us about leaving anything SCENTED in our tent (perfumes, toothpaste, bug spray, etc...). The first day we were definitely paranoid about leaving toothpaste in our tent but honestly, the bears only come for food. They don't hurt you whatsoever. So if you're paranoid, leave scented things in the bear lock. If not, it's fine, nothing happened to us at least! MONTHS WE WENT: Last year we went around August 11th and there were no sightings of bears. We went a few days ago, July 19th-22nd, and there has been bear sightings everyday when we camped. BATHROOMS: Quick note regarding the bathrooms: No mirrors and hand soap! Only toilet and sink. The women's bath room near campsite 104 was clean! There wasn't any problem with it at all. As for the men's bathroom, my boyfriend has mentioned that it was dirty and someone sounded like they were smoking and vomiting in there SHOWERING: The showering system: $1 for 3 minutes. You have to get tokens outside the campground store. 1 token = 3 minutes. There will be showering bathrooms around the campground. You just have to look for one. Inside the showering bathrooms, there's a toilet, sink with a mirror, hangers to hang your stuff up, a bench, and machine to insert your coins by the shower. Make sure you're prepared to go into the shower before inserting your coin! It'll start immediately after you do. The water varies. My family said the shower was REALLY hot, but my experience was okay. It did get SUPER hot in the beginning but eventually durable and cool. EATING: We didn't have experience last time we went so when we were preparing and eating food, a ton of wasps swarmed our area and it was a disaster. This time, we brought along citronella candles and it was a LIFESAVER!!! We brought 3 along to spread it around the tables and it was amazing. Definitely a tip! Entrance Lady: It's nothing that important but I do want to note that one of the younger lady, I forgot her name, was really really rude and upset when talking to us. It was really unpleasant being all happy and on vacation and having someone ruin that few minutes for us. Working at a vacation and tourist area is the wrong job for her. There was not party just a car parked which a host reported would need to be moved in am arrived at 11 pm in the rain. First time campers at Fallen Leaf and it did not disappoint! I grew up camping at Camp Richardson, unfortunately not dog friendly. I love that Fallen Leaf Campground is dog friendly. The campsites were spacious and beautiful and the bathrooms were so clean. Although I do wish there were mirrors and hand soap in the one close to us.. We read a lot of reviews about hosts being rude, we did not experience any negative hosts. In fact, our interaction with checking in was spectacular. There are bears! We had visits every night. Fortunately we knew to keep everything locked up in the bear locker. (Even my toiletries!) The bears easily get scared off and aren't aggressive. The campground got SILENT at 10 pm minus bears visiting certain campers. The lake was a short walk and the most stunning view and crystal clear waters with beautiful rocks. We camped during the week and I did not think the beach was that crowded at all. I wish we stayed longer than 3 nights. We will definitely be fighting for a spot back next year! read more

Our first stay at fallen leaf was awesome. We did four nights and although the trek to the lake was quite far from our camp spot it was well worth it! Recommend you pack lightly if you are located far from the lake and to find some of the trails that make the trip shorter. Really enjoyed having a close spot to explore other areas of Tahoe. We loved this campground, despite the E. coli outbreak that weekend! We felt sorry for the tent campers who rely on the general bathrooms because there was no running water, only the toilets were available to use. This campground has over 200 sites as well as yurts. A small camp store has all the necessities you might have forgotten, as well as firewood. We had site 81 and it was spacious: equipped with a picnic bench, fire pit and bear box with a paved, decently level pad. If you're not camping here, day use is $10. We thought Fallen Leaf was a hidden gem! Maybe the best campground we've stayed at in Cali. Located just 15 minutes from Lake Tahoe with its own lake (that's not very crowded) you can SUP or fish in. Can't wait to stay here again! read more

Wow such a well maintained campsite and pristine lake area! There are bathrooms interspersed among the campsites so never had to walk too far. I think I would put 5 stars if it weren't for the showers, but this has everything you would expect a campsite to have as campers sleeping in a tent. My friend booked the site for us so I don't really know how the booking process went, but the area we booked was enough to set up two tents (one for her and I and then one for my boyfriend at the time - now husband ). There are bathrooms with toilets stationed in reasonable parts throught the campground. However, not every bathroom had showers, so we had to walk around a bit to find bathrooms with showers. That felt stressful for me personally because of not knowing if a shower area was free or not after walking a certain distance with my toiletries. In any case, the best feature of this campground is how close it is not only to Lake Tahoe, but also to Fallenleaf Lake! That place is stunning with also mountains as a backdrop but much quieter and less people. It is literally a hidden gem. It was unfortunately strangely cold when we went in the summer, but it could be fun to go back when it is warmer and kayak or something. Also something to note is that this campground has a lot of bear sightings/warnings, so that personally was scary to me and is probably the main reason I personally would not go back (even though we did not see any bears, though. We did hear packs of wolves every night which was cool but also a little bit scary). If I were to go back, I would probably rent some kind of camping van/trailer/RV. But I would love to just purchase a day pass or something in the future in order to access the lake! read more

Being able to feel safe with our dogs in our campground was such an important factor. While we saw bears every night we stayed here, the front office educates you on your way in as well as providers bear boxes in the camp zone. There's never a lot of noise, but the lake can get busy on the weekends. read more

Absolutely epic campground within a short driving distance from South Lake Tahoe! We stayed at site 60 and were impressed at how great most of the sites were after biking through the campground. Not something anyone can control, but mosquitos are definitely out and about at this campground, especially during dusk. We came home with bites everywhere, even after applying lots of bug spray. There are a few short trails to Fallen Leaf Lake which is incredible, and wasn't that crowded even over the 4th of July holiday weekend! I would highly suggest anyone try this campground, especially because it has amenities like hot showers and running water. We hope to come back to Fallen Leaf campground soon! read more

We stayed at Campsite 136. If you have dogs not the best site as we have our poor pups full of thorns in their paws. I highly recommend shoes to protect their paws. There were thickets and so we were limited on how many tents we could lay out in our area. We parked a large 6 foot bed truck in the parking area. We used 1 6 foot tent and 1 3 person tent. That's all we could fit. Pros - fire pit, large picnic table, large bear locker, paved space, not far from bathrooms. They allow dogs at campsite. Please make sure to keep your dogs on leash at your site and while walking. Cons - showers were a bit of a walk, entrance to road to campground needs repair, there was damage due to heavy snows from winter. Lots of thorns along paths! Beware of ticks and bees. They were around our campsite. I came prepared. Bears come out at night looking for food. Make sure to put your foods, drinks and toiletries in the bear lockers for safety. Make sure to buy your firewood before coming to camp. We purchased our wood at the camp and it wasn't good. $8 a stack and it smoked white and was no good (we all got sick from it). It is a nice location. If the weather is nice it's a nice alternative to the busier and loud South Lake Tahoe location. Fallen Leaf Lake is serene and beautiful. Sadly we arrived Sunday 6/18 on Father's Day and the weather did not cooperate. It was freezing and very windy. Due to the weather and the bad smoke from the wood we had to leave our camp and stay at a local hotel. We did come back to camp a couple days later when it was warmer and it was much nicer. Due to the cold and snowy winter the temperatures are much colder right now in Tahoe. The gas prices are very high. People are still camping and coming up here but it's not as busy during the middle of the week Tuesday - Thursday if you want to come up to Tahoe and avoid the crazy summer crowds. Just make sure to check the weather. We planned our trip months ahead yet never could predict the weather of course. Just bad timing. My experience of camp was more like a 2/3 star but gave it a 4 star for probably what it is if weather was warmer. Beautiful camp, with a hidden gem Fallen Leaf Lake nearby. Way more low key than Lake Tahoe and very dog friendly! Took my Jack Russell Terrier and did a one night stay at the camp (tent camping). This was my first camping experience EVER. Let me tell you - They are NOT kidding about these bears. I read the reviews and was very paranoid the whole time. I was praying we saw no bears. I was not so lucky. It was 8pm pitch dark when we decided to start cooking some s'mores before it got too late. Everything (food and toiletries) was locked up in the bear box per park rangers instructions. THANK GOODNESS I had not opened up the bear box yet when I see a massive shadow in the bushes 15 feet away. Immediately, I knew it was bear. They are SO quiet, not even my dog heard/saw it. We quietly picked up my dog and hid in the tent for the rest of the night. I soon learned that bears are the most active after sunset because from 8-11pm we kept hearing cars honking, pots banging, people yelling at bears to leave their camp. I'm probably going to try beach camping next and work my courage up to try this campsite again If I come again I would most likely rent an RV or camper to feel more safe at night and bring bear spray to take on a hike. I know bears aren't interested in humans but it's a little scary for someone with zero camping experience. During the day, lots of kids and families on their bike/ scooters having fun and trails full of people and dogs. Bottom line, stick to the rules. Absolutely have your dogs on leash in the camp and on nearby trails for their safety. Although dogs can deter bears they can also sometimes instigate bears to attack. Other than that I'm bringing my flouts to try at the Fallen Leaf Lake with my dog! read more

This place is far enough from the busy tourist areas and feels somewhat remote in a very wooded forest. It also has plenty of friendly bears if you like that sort of thing (just remember not to feed them though). The greatest thing about this campground is that there are hot showers and you'll need a token for a 3 minute shower (BYO soap/towel). read more

We just came for a quick hike. Day passes were reasonably priced and the area was beautiful and easy to hike.

We stayed in June of 2015 and had a blast! We camped with some friends and had campsites 92 and 93. We were provided with a fire ring, table and bear box. There was running water at the campsite next to us, which helped with dishes :) The restrooms were super clean! There was hot showers and I believe it was 4 minutes for 2 dollars. It was a little chilly when we went so these showers were much appreciated! Make sure to keep your bear box locked!! We had visitors when ours didn't click closed completely. The lake was beautiful and a 5 minute walk from us. We kayaked, swam and fished. We didn't catch any fish but my husband did find a local fishing spot that was for kids and free! There are lots of stores around so if you forget anything, it's okay! We overpacked because we had no idea what was around. This year we can pack a lot more lightly. read more

We have been camping at Fallen Leaf Lake with my brother and his wife for 20 plus years. We stay the entire 14 days and enjoy every minute. The camp ground is beautiful and the sites are well maintained. The camp hosts are welcoming and are often checking if everything is okay. There are bathrooms evenly scattered throughout the campground. Many are new. They are kept neat and clean. We wish the new bathrooms had a mirror and shelf like the old bathrooms. The speed limit for cars within the campground is 10 MPH. Electric bikes are more and more prevalent and for the most part do not heed the speed limit. This is not just a campground problem but a problem for all bike and walking trails in the basin. We feel this issue does need to be addressed in the campground.
