The first come first serve sites were almost all empty Sunday-Wednesday mid July when I visited. The creek is beautiful and there are lots of good swimming spots. We stayed with friends in a group site and several single nearby sites. There was plenty of space and fallen trees and meadows for our kids to explore! The bad: Idk why but checkout and checkin are both at 2pm, so the sites aren't being cleaned fully between uses. There was a bit of trash at ours and we almost overlapped with the group there before us. The dumpsters were full the entire time we were there. So many yellow jackets and mosquitos, but that's summer in California near the water for you. The worst, there were several bears that made the rounds scavenging every night. We heard them sniffing around tents, banging around coolers, and people generally letting off foghorns and screaming and dogs barking all night long. The campsite is not equipped for bears. The hosts are doing their best, but this is their first summer with this problem, and they aren't receiving support from fish and wildlife. There are no bear boxes at the campsites and very little signage anywhere alerting people to store all their containers and food out of reach at night. People are also not helping. We talked to one family with their food out and said to pack it up as there were bears out the night before. They said they had been coming to the campground for years and never seen a bear. They didn't pack up their food at night and the bears got it all, and they had to leave the next day. The stupidity was astounding. Overall, I would recommend it except for the bears! Hopefully the government steps up to give the host more support before something serious happens!

We were extremely disappointed with our recent experience at River Ranch Campground. We had planned…read morea 3-day camping trip--a tradition our family has enjoyed for three generations--but were kicked out after just one night due to a new "no music" policy that was never mentioned on the website during booking. Within 10 minutes of our arrival, we were approached and warned about playing music, even though it was very low and only audible to those at our site. It turns out there are now surveillance cameras and speakers at every campsite, and staff are actively listening in to ensure no music is being played. This level of monitoring felt invasive and unnecessary. We were harassed repeatedly throughout our short stay--not just about the quiet music, but also about a service dog that belonged to our friend, a military veteran. Despite the website clearly stating that pets are welcome, we were approached multiple times and questioned about the dog in a way that felt discriminatory and disrespectful. Our group included a handicapped friend and a retired veteran, both of whom were deeply upset by how we were treated. After all the years and money we've spent here, we were shocked by the lack of respect and hospitality. Thankfully, Don Pedro Campgrounds welcomed us without a reservation and turned our ruined trip into a positive experience. We will not be returning to River Ranch and strongly recommend choosing Don Pedro instead. It offers a far more welcoming and respectful camping environment. 10 out of 10 times, Don Pedro is the better choice. 0 stars is what they deserve but isn't an option!

We hung around the little eatery by the general store and the staff were very nice. That day they were serving some Hot Dogs and they looked good but I did not have one. We went to the lake and it is beautiful with the water being clear where we were at. Kids were swimming and people were fishing. There is a road that takes you around the lake but be careful because these are where the private cabins are located and the owners who have these properties are not the warmest people in terms of welcoming you are even speaking to you. The staff was kind and polite. A few trails that you can take that get you around the lake to walk and explore or search for Bigfoot. I do believe in Bigfoot. A very nice resort that I will explore further in the future.

Also if you are at lot 20/21 you are RIGHT by the entry for off roading people who are on the way to do the rubicon trail. Loon Lake? More like ANT Lake!…read more Went to this campground with my husband last weekend. I would highlight how pretty the place is, but unfortunately the campground design had many flaws. First, the elevation was pretty high, so right away, we were noticeably winded even after the shortest walk. They should really consider lowering the campground. Then, we went to sit on the lakeshore, and what did we see?? Not a single loon, but THOUSANDS of ants. Less than 5 minutes after I laid my towel down, it was covered in ants. Turns out there were several ant hills....ON THE BEACH. This is an unacceptable flaw in design. I would suggest the camp hosts or Forest Service relocate the ant hills, so that people can actually enjoy the shore. Just as we were settling down later in the evening and trying to sleep, I heard someone making a God awful owl hooting noise, from high up in the trees. It was very obnoxious. And I know it wasn't an actual owl because birds aren't real. All in all, it's a pretty place but I'd recommend visiting a campground that values comfort and caters to your needs. I guess January is the most awesome time to visit. Whether was nice and warm, with snow play still available in the parking lot and on the trails. Perfect day to be outdoor. -Park is very well kept and accessible for all. The North Cove Trail was a walk in the pak with stunning display of different trees. Look carefully, wild mushroom has been inoculated and is ready for their debuted. -Visitor center and ranger were very informative. -Pro tip: if your family is the outdoorsy type, buy a California State Park Pass - include entrance to this place and you can skip the line when visiting on a busy weekend....

Points of interest…read moreinclude a large tree stump which is large enough to be a little stage, fallen ancient giants, humongous exposed roots, hollowed out tree stumps which kids can walk through etc. Apparently the people who took care of the park previously cut out a hollow in one of the trees as a point of attraction for cars and people to walk through to compete with other such parks. The tree finally gave away and fell during a heavy rain a few years ago. We took the north grove trail, with kids and toddlers it took us about an hour with several photo stops. There is no elevation so it was an easy stroll. There is no signal in the park. But since it's a single loop, there is no possibility of getting lost.

When we arrived, we were told the bears were very active, which in this area, they usually are. There are alot of signs informing the public they are in Bear Country and what to do if they come across one. There's also information on the proper way to store food, so the bears can't get to it. Unfortunately, we see the carelessness from campers all of the time. It's very frustrating, especially when you hear a bear and cub may be euthanized because they have gotten too comfortable approaching people at the campsites and could be a danger. This place is beautiful and the bears are a treasure. If you camp here, please be responsible! Aside that, we love this campground. Staff are always very pleasant and helpful.
