Been rafting with these guys for years, both 1-day and multi day. Always a great time! Friendly guides, solid equipment, safety focused & well trained. Also they serve delicious, healthy food. Highly recommend!

Went on a 1 day rafting trip on the Middle Fork of the American River with me and my friends. One of them fell out and lost a shoe, but it's all good. Alex did a great job of directing us and making the experience fun.

This is our ninth river run with OARS. We've never had a bad experience. We met a lot of guides and are grateful for each one. Bible was our guide and made our experience on the Middle Fork a river run we'll never forget. His description of each rapid was helpful in knowing what was ahead. Bible's explicit instructions gave us the confidence that we'll make it through each rapid. His sense of humor was interesting and fun, it helped us relax between rapids We camped three nights at OARS American River Outpost. There are outdoor showers that can be hot or cold. The men and women washrooms were clean. I highly recommend walking to Sierra Rizing for fresh baked goods and coffee.

    Amazing day with Lizbeth!

My girlfriends and I did the half-day event with Lizbeth as our guide. She was fully capable, knowledgeable, and provided plenty of humor along the way. Mike was the head guide, and he too was such a pleasure for our experience. Highly recommend this to anyone! Thank you Mike and Lizbeth.

Alex and Christian were AMAZING! We had such an amazing time and our guides really made the experience. We felt safe and cared for, and most of all we had so much fun. Lunch was perfect. Alex helped a person in our group with their fear of not being able to swim and it was overall such a good experience. They made sure to make everyone feel cared for and supported. HUGE shoutout to Alex and Christian.

Amazing experience through and through My company does a retreat each year and this was the second time back, though my first time. I was a little intimidated heading into it, but our guide Jose did fantastic explaining scenarios that could arise, what to do, and how to communicate. He set great expectations and I felt way safe going into it, not to mention all the fun our team had along the river! Garrett also brought a lot of fun energy that livened the experience. End of august was a beautiful time of year to go too--it was hot (~90 or so) and the water was gorgeously refreshing. Water levels were low but made for some extra rapids towards the end. Halfway through we stopped for lunch and they set up everything for us and were very accommodating to dietary needs and allergies. They also do 2-day trips where they'll cook for you at the campsite too. Highly highly highly recommend

Had one of the best days EVER! The whole experience from the in depth safety briefing to lunch on the river from the guides, to the professionalism from not only our guides was top of the line and made the experience a great one. Our guide was Andrew and his ability to tell us when we needed to paddle helped us get down the river perfectly. Also he's a total goofball along with the rest of the guides, was constantly laughing and my face still hurts from grinning the whole time. Definitely recommend this company for a fun time getting gnarly on the river!

There are no words that can express my heartfelt gratitude for the sacrifices and hardship the " Isei " (First Generation ) must have gone through ! They paved the way for people like both of my grandfathers whom came to the United States in 1906. On May 20th, 1869 a group of 22 samurais and one women arrived in San Francisco on board the SS China with 50,000 (Mulberry Trees) (Silk worm cocoons) (tea plants and seeds) ( cooking utensils) and (swords). Thus the Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Colony Farm was established on 160 acres in Gold Hill Placerville on June 8th, 1869. The life of the colony was short lived (1869 -1871) due to inadequate funding and a severe drought in 1871. Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Colony was considered to be the first Japanese Settlement in North America. In 1969 Ronald Reagan (governor at the time) proclaimed the colony to be a California Historic Landmark No. 815. The land is currently owned and operated by the American River Conservancy. The farm is on private property, so visitations can only be made by arranging a private tours, attending certain festivals on the property or schdueled events. Nice picnic areas have been cleared of brush and poison oak and have picnic tables. Our four-year old loved the walk, enjoyed the beach, and managed the return hike, too! We could have stayed all afternoon if we had thought to bring a blanket and sand toys. Next time we will also bring small toys to add to the fun of the search! This is a loop trail, a little over a mile, but only the first half mile is wide, accessible and clear of poison oak. We returned via this trail because the rest of the loop narrows and poison oak was everywhere. Older kids might like it.

They were incredibly easy to work with and managed to get us in for a Father's Day weekend charter on short notice on Folsom Lake, which was much appreciated. We booked a 3-hour trip and packed in a ton of fun! The crew was totally flexible and let us customize the experience to be exactly what we wanted. We cruised around the lake, swam, and even tried water surfing behind the boat. Sky was amazing with our daughter--she gave her a lesson, walked her through the basics, and coached her the entire way. It made the experience so much more memorable for our family. They came fully equipped with everything we needed, including life vests for the whole crew. Whether we had wanted to just relax and cruise or stay in the water the whole time, they were happy to go with whatever worked for us. Next time, we're definitely going to try the tubes and the floating island--they had it all ready and it looked like a blast. Highly recommend Wake on the Lake if you're looking for a fun, professional, and flexible boat charter experience!

When leaving for camp, don't leave in the afternoon like our group. Due to an accident on the road, we were stuck in traffic for HOURS and had to set-up our tents in the dark. Bring a headlamp. Canyoneering - Although I recommend this activity, here are caveats: no bathrooms available and travel time is an hour each way. Emergency bathrooms are in the bushes. During our return, I saw a reservoir that the bus should stop at for bathrooms before and after. Know your group's limitations. Because we didn't know any better, our high school group went on the 6 hour LadyBug trail which I liken to Navy Seal training or somewhat like a heartier version of the Kalalau Trail in Kauai. Included in the hike are about 10 jumps into the very cold water and an optional high jump 10+ feet high, and lots of slippery rocks to navigate which is where many people fall. Do not do the LadyBug trail unless physically fit. With teens/kids of varying fitness levels, I highly recommend a short time of canyoneering and more water play. Canyoneering becomes no fun after hour 3. Perhaps the Evergreen trail is best for students of varying fitness levels as it has some canyoneering and lots of waterplay which our students couldn't get enough of. A couple of people in our crew fell off the trail due to soil erosion. Wear clothes that dry fast. Slow drying clothes mean your clothes remain wet and you become cold. High performance clothing is best. If you sun burn easily, wear long spf 50+ pants, a long sleeve shirt, and fast drying socks with shoes that you can hike AND swim in. Also, if your face burns, consider wearing a fishing face mask. Having a laundry line for clothes to dry on was useful to me. I wore Keen Uneek sandals which worked out well. If balance is poor or you do not do regular cardio/strength work, I don't recommend canyoneering. Beware: Lots of Poison Oak. If prone, bring Calamine lotion or vinegar and baking soda for relief. White Water Rafting - Guides are all about safety and provide not only a safety lesson on land before you get in the boat, but a safety lesson in the boat. Even with a class 3 rapid, several students and a chaperone fell out of the boat which may be scary to some, but you do get a lesson in "if you fall out of the boat". While experienced, our guide was thrown forward into me on one of the rapids. No need to wear any socks with your shoes, but good water shoes/sandals are recommended. For adults/chaperones, there's coffee and tea, and electrical outlets which was helpful to me as I needed to re-charge my battery that powers my CPAP machine. Having a solar powered fan was useful to me in the evenings when the air was warm and still. Providing food that is good and healthy must be one of the values of the camp as they do not allow junk food. Additionally, the camp will try to meet dietary needs like gluten-free. Dismissing tables is random and not fun when you're constantly picked last. I'm guessing the food tends to be saltier to prevent dehydration? For the in between times, apples and oranges and water are located in the kitchen. Lunch is provided on the hikes. For White Water Rafting, lunch timing is logistically poor because you start at 11:50am, then you have to hurry to the boats by 12:05pm. I don't like the rush to wait method of timing. Although the camp has a canopy for "sleeping under the stars", most of us brought tents which helped keep the dust out of everything. Camp is super dusty. If you do a 3 night trip, there's not a lot of down time, but when there is a couple hours, you'll want to be able to rest in your tent instead of the open. Moreover, there's a swing and a volleyball net, After dinner, there is an evening devotion centered on the Bible and don't forget the mosquito repellant AND a relief ointment. There's only 4 showers and four faucets in a trough sink for the whole camp so plan according.
