Beautiful beach and such a great event! The day was perfect and there is no better way to spend a Saturday than being able to see Kimiko on the big BroAM stage! The even is amazing and for such a great cause! Loved watching the surf contest, live music, and all of the wonderful vendors. The concession stand is really cool too. Lots of options to choose from (from coffee to snow cones and everything in-between).

Compact state beach with free parking and convenient restrooms showers and lifeguards service. Nice playground and beach volleyball sands. There are concessions selling good sandwiches and tacos and drinks.

    Live band at the beach.

We came here to commemorate our step-grandson's birthday. It's a pretty beach & kept very clean. The parking is a bear! A band was playing on this day. The weather was perfect for a family & friends gathering. Logan loved the water and we could feel him in spirit. He is so loved and missed by many.

I can't say that I'm a fan of going to the beach, but I've been here a few times to run a half marathon that started at the parking lot at C St and 3rd St. Even from the parking lot, you get a very nice view of the Pacific Ocean. It's definitely a nice venue for the start and finish of a race, especially for those that love the beach. Running-wise, it's great as the weather is almost 10 degrees cooler with the ocean breeze.

Beautiful, family-friendly beach with great amenities Moonlight Beach is one of my favorite spots in Encinitas. The beach is clean, wide, and perfect for families or anyone wanting a relaxing day by the ocean. There's a great playground, a large and clean restroom building, and a convenient concession stand for snacks and food. The volleyball area features a shaded area with multiple thached roof umbrellas, that almost give off an island vibe and make it easy to escape the sun. There's also another area near the restrooms with fire pits and picnic tables, which is perfect for hanging out, grilling, or enjoying a break. Free parking is a big bonus, though it's limited and fills up fast, so arriving early is best. Lifeguards are on duty, and the whole beach feels safe, welcoming, and well-maintained. A fantastic spot for families, locals, and visitors looking for a clean, convenient, and enjoyable beach day!

One of the best beach experiences I've had this summer in SoCal. I went during a weekday afternoon and the place was busy, but not overcrowded. It was honestly everything I can ask for--clean sand, clear waters, big waves, towering cliffs. It was so picturesque and felt great walking along the cliffs getting further away from the crowd. Also they have smooth stones scattered throughout the sand so I was able to skip a few rocks. There's a bathroom and shower on hand so clean up is easy. Parking lot is free, but can get busy during peak hours. There's plenty of street parking otherwise.

Very nice beach experience here at Moonlight State Beach. A nice flat area of beach that doesn't have you worried that the cliffs are going to come down on you. Plenty of lifeguards here and a designated swimming area so you aren't run over by the surfers. On my recent visit, the weather was perfect, the waves made for some fun ocean experience, and the water was SO clear. A mid-week early afternoon is a perfect time to visit so that you can avoid the crowds. Parking is plentiful and free - so take advantage of this. The bathroom and shower areas are sufficient and relatively clean for a public beach area. And they have the Beach Wolf concessions which has a variety of offerings. Plenty of seating, a great playground. I can see why so many people say this is the beach to visit if you're here in Encinitas!

This beach makes top 3 in my favorite sd beaches list. On weekdays, it's not overly crowded. At least it's not when I go. Sand is perfect. I love how clean it is. Barely any trash or litter around. There's an awesome playground for little ones. There's also a cafe that serves breakfast and lunch. The views are breathtaking. Oh and the sunsets are pretty epic here too. The only downside is parking. Street parking only and not too much of it.

Great spot to enjoy your summer day! Parking was rough on the weekends but we were able to find a spot. There's multiple ways you can head down to the beach - the stairs or the main entrance. There's a playground for kids! The beach is very clean and the water is blue!

Moonlight State Beach is my favorite public beach to go to for beautiful sunrise and sunset walks. But of course, you can do other things. It has fire pits to get your celebrations on, volleyball courts to get your game on, picnic tables to get your eat on, a playground for the kiddos to get their playtime on, and importantly clean restrooms as well as an awesome concession. You can practically spend the whole day at this beach. No worries for the parking situation...parking is FREE and always available. If you're looking for a well-maintained beach with lots of activities, Moonlight is the one to consider.

A beautiful beach to take a nice walk or find a spot to sit and relax. There's a nice food stand where you can grab a bite to eat as well

Ask the Community - Moonlight State Beach

Can I have a bounce house on the playground?? It's for a kid's bday

Is there a walking path along the beach?

No - there is no pathway along the beach.

Is biking allowed and is there a a bike lane?

No Boardwalk at all. There are some bike lanes provided on surrounding streets. On 101 all share the street and bikes have the right of way

    Dog friendly in the beach?

Dogs are not allowed on Moonlight State Beach, though you can walk them on a leash in the surrounding area. For "actual" dog beaches, drive a little south to:…

Why are there rocks all over moonlight beach? It wasn't like this before?

Depends on the tides. Strong tides bring the rocks up, and then more tides make them disappear again. Whatever condition you find the beach in, it changes constantly. Go back in a week, or two, & o bet the rocks are gone (or at least there will be…

Are the pits open? Can I bring my own that has a cover?

    Nope!!! Closed off

Are the fire pits open right now?

I was there 1st week of November and there was yellow tape around that whole area where picnic tables and fire pits are

How many fire pits are available at this beach?

    Guessing 4

    Is alcohol allowed?

Alcohol is not allowed on the beach. But little red cups are!😉

    Can you see the bioluminescence?

Absolutely. Was so bright this past week!

I plan on having my sons birthday there. Do I need to reserve with the county or do I just show up early to claim a spot? I would love to be closer to the playground, can I put a tent near there?

    Can we camp at moonlight?

I'm 99% sure they don't allow overnight camping there. I'm sure the city of Encinitas website can confirm it. :)

What's all the sparkly stuff in the water at this beach?

My best guess is it's the mineral Mica. There are mica deposits in the mountains across the Mexican border, which gets washed down to the oceans here and you end up with all that glittery stuff :)

Having a beach party/bonfire for my daughter this Friday May 19...what time do u think I'd need to get there to secure a fire pit?

The night before. Use caution tape or something I seen work top with beach chairs over it all taped up

I told myself if the parking lot had an open spot, I would stop, otherwise, I would get back on the road to go home. I got lucky tonight and got a spot. This lot is always full but I have managed to get a spot a few times. You either need to come real early or later in the day. Sunsets here are gorgeous, its a bit further south, so you're going to get the sun setting more to the far right, so it wont be directly in front of you, but still very beautiful and unique in its own way. Tonight, there was an impromptu band playing and music was great! They played one of my fave songs Fade Into You by Mazzy Star and I almost cried. The views were so gorgeous and while the song was playing I saw two sparrow like birds on the most beautiful red flowers and it just felt like life could not be any better. The benches up top are a hot commodity, but people come and go quickly so I got a nice spot and sat and watched the sun setting for about 30 min more. I saw a guy bring his own foldable reclining chair and thats a great idea! I think I am going to do that too! This is the best spot to relax for awhile... I love this place and will be coming back often. I also hope one day to be out there surfing with all those amazing surfers!! There were so many out there today, was a site to see!!

Restrooms, grass stra, picnic tables, perfect trees and plants, benches. Just a few parking spots which means most probably you have to park nearby and walk. The vistas from above the beach are spectacular. The sand is warm and thin, perfect for long walks or taking a quick nap.

"Out of water, I am nothing..." - Duke Kahanamoku…read more Duke's quote also explains why, at any given time, there are so many people in the awesome line-up at Pipes Beach. Whether you surf, run, bike, or just want a chillaxin stroll or picnic along the sand, this place ROCKS and was one of the first places I began surfing regularly since moving to N. County from UTC almost a decade ago. Before moving, I asked a few of my bros where to surf up there and they were all like, "Pipes, Pipes, Pipes..." and I was all like "Bong?" j/k The bluff above the beach sports a paved trail along Hwy 101 where you can run or walk from Encinitas to Cardiff and back. There's also a bike lane too! One funny thing about weekend warrior surfers is that many don't want to walk very far to catch a wave. With Pipes all you have to do is park on the spaces to the west side of 101 or along the dirt road to the east of it (make sure you don't block the white lines marking the bike lanes and BE CAREFUL opening you car doors!!!). The beach is about a hundred feet down the steep paved main entry path or you can access it via the wooden steps leading from the San Elijo campgrounds. If you like a reef break, head south along the beach towards Cardiff while north you'll find solid beach and combo breaks. There's tons of fun-in-the-sun stuff to do on the beach but be careful about leaving your unattended picnic baskets out, otherwise the squirrels and seagulls will go to town! I once had a squirrel chew through my entire backpack looking for the bag of peanuts I left inside! The only restrooms to be had are also on top of the hill and they keep the showers very well maintained. When the surf cooks the line-up here gets packed but you can almost always find a pocket somewhere to catch a wave. Just don't turn all aggro on your fellow surfers since no one owns the ocean, okay? Just think about what Duke would do!!!

I'm not sure how normal it is at this spot but there was a TON of rocks. It was way too much to be able to enter the water without having them beating your feet and ankles. My friend was bleeding after trying to check out the water. The surf was also a little intense that day so I'm wondering if that had any effect on the rock situation? This was a very clean beach with restrooms at the bottom of the ramp from the street so it did have that going for it but we decided to leave and head for a beach where we could safely go into the water that day.
