The Custard Ranch is a well known soft ice cream stand in Woodbine. We have been bringing our…read morechildren and grandchildren here for many years. The stand sells both soft-serve and regular ice cream (plus other food) and there are many options for sizes and flavors. The staff is polite and efficient. The reason for our giving them only a 3-star rating is that, when our four grandchildren ordered cones of soft-serve and two asked for cups in case the ice cream started to fall, we were charged twenty-six cents per cup for the cups. This is the first place that we have ever seen that charges for the cup when a child gets an ice cream cone and it seems both cheap (although $0.26 for less than a nickel's worth of plastic is not cheap) and very customer unfriendly. At least they didn't charge extra for the paper napkins. Should we return in the future, we will be sure to bring our own plastic cups.

Unfortunately, during our most recent visit, the man behind the counter (whom I assume was the owner) made disparaging remarks about police officers and firefighters in front of customers. As three police cars and a fire truck responded to an emergency with their sirens on, he joked, "Guess a cat's stuck in a tree." He then followed with another joke about the donut shop closing. We found these comments disrespectful to first responders and chose to leave. Because of this experience, we will not be returning.

It's not just the proximity that keeps us coming backs. We genuinely love this place. Manage your expectations: there is almost always a long, slow moving line anytime after 7 or 8. But everyone is friendly and in a good mood, so it's not too bad. For my money, it's the best ice cream on the island. But I always get the same thing: moose tracks drizzled with peanut butter sauce. The most decadent and perfect dessert known to mankind. The people who work there are always kind and friendly. In all the years we've been coming here, never had a bad experience, so points for consistency.
