Finally woke up early enough to grab brunch here, and I was not disappointed! The Bengali Chicken and Chutney was super delicious. The fig jam complements the chutney and curry flavors so well, and I appreciated that the sandwich wasn't too meat heavy. The bread itself was also very good. My friend had the Bacon and Guac Breakfast Burrito, and she was also very impressed with how delicious it was. I also treated myself to the Lemon Earl Grey donut. I thought it could've used more flavor because I couldn't really taste a whole lot of the earl grey or lemon, but the texture of the donut was really nice and light. Hands down my favorite place to eat in Durham. Not only does this place do donuts very well, but they do EVERYTHING exceptionally well! The bagels are incredible as well as the other baked goods and seasonal beverages they have on the menu. ABSOLUTE FAVORITE BREAKFAST SPOT OF ALL TIME! Did I express my love enough?! My husband & I spent time in Durham for his school, and fell in love with Monuts. We had a great tradition of going out for a breakfast date every Wednesday. Originally we planned to try a new spot every time, but quickly it became Monuts Wednesdays. You really can't go wrong with any of their pastries, breakfast sandwiches or entrees. Everything they make seems to be a fresh & creative spin on a beloved classic (hello homemade pop tarts!). You can taste the love in every bite. My personal favs are: glazed donut (!!), biscuit with homemade jam, yogurt parfait with homemade granola & fruit compote, bagel sandwich with 7 minute egg, avocado, greens, bacon & chèvre cream cheese! No longer in the area anymore, we still talk about Monuts regularly. I've even emailed the owner to see if they'll mail us some donuts but alas you can't get them shipped which is probably for the best... we'll just have to go back soon! Monuts achieved the unlikely in making a breakfast burrito actually interesting - they infused their pillowlike scrambled eggs with flavor on their own, made a little bacon-maple-cupcake-like taste sensation out of the mixture of home fries with sriracha and maple syrup a bacon, and generally just knocked it out of the park. I would almost never order a breakfast burrito on an interesting and unique menu like this, but they were out of the biscuit with pumpkin butter and house sausage, so here we were. While New Yorkers would probably hate Monuts' light and airy crunchy-crusted bagel, I liked it, and liked how heavy handed they were with the manchego and greens on the 'eggspanola'. As for the baked goods, the lemon curd on the scone was appropriately tart, and the pistachio fig blondie was more like an energy bar than a sugar bomb. read more

We were only in Durham for a week and tried to get to as many new places as possible. Monuts is the only one we visited twice. It is DELICIOUS. Their chicken biscuit with pickles is a MUST. The first time I had it as is. The chicken is moist and flavorful. The biscuit is soft, with a little bit of crunch on the edges. The second time I got with an egg. I love a good egg over easy. It's a little messier to eat, but so worth it. My husband got the Everyday I'm Brusselin' (first time) and the Pep It Up (second time). He said both were incredible but loved the flavor of Brusselin' better. It's slightly saltier with that sausage patty. I tried both and liked the Pep It Up better. The pepper jelly adds a delicious sweetness to a breakfast sandwich. But that's not all. You HAVE to get a yeast donut. They are so soft and chewy. The sufgsniyot (I have no idea how to pronounce that) is incredible. The homemade jam is the perfect mix of tart and sweet in the middle of a perfect donut sprinkled with sugar. Favorite go to spot for brunch in Durham! Always great sandwiches and coffee drinks. This time I got the the Eggspanolo and it was really delicious, I got it with an everything bagel and over easy egg, it comes with manchego cheese which has a nutty flavor. We also got a variety of pastry and donuts and sorry to say, I don't recommend the them. They are not fresh tasting or warm. They come out of the display case and get served right away when you order at the register, so if you're in a rush, get the donuts and pastry. Place stays busy entire time both times I've been there. If you see a line 10 deep, and every table full, don't worry, the line moves pretty fast. They have 2 registers, most people already know what they want to order by the time they get to the registers and it takes probably about about 30 seconds to 1 minute for each person to order and pay. After ordering, we've never had a problem finding a table surprisingly even when the place is packed when walking in. The food and drinks come out fast, and table turnover is fast too. I'll just put it out there: I love Monuts. Located on Ninth St, it's about a 20 minute walk from East Campus but the 40-minute round trip is worth it. I've tried both their bagels and their donuts and every one has been a hit for me: soft, fresh, and never too sweet. The service has also been nothing but friendly! I would recommend the honey rosemary cream cheese on any bagel (it's honestly to die for) and the pumpkin chai donut. There's also a drink menu, because no bagel is complete without a good cup of coffee. Do yourself a favor and head to Monuts ASAP. It's good for the soul. read more

There's a reason why there's often a line through the door at Monuts, this place is good! If you're planning to eat there, apparently you can skip the line if you grab a seat at the bar. However, the line moves pretty quickly, and I appreciate that they have a staff member helping out with finding seating (eliminating the need for people to circle and stalk tables waiting for someone to leave). I recently had the Pep it Up breakfast sandwich, and it was one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've had in a long time. I had almost made my own sandwich, but I'm so glad I went with one from the menu. There were ingredients I would have never considered (pepper jam!), but all the flavors meshed really well together. We got takeout from here for lunch on a Wednesday. That's really the optimal time to go, unfortunately. If you wait too long on the weekend, they will have sold out of the donuts. The donuts are very much worth the hype. I had the apple cider donut and was very happy with that choice. My girlfriend got the ginger hibiscus and the orange poppyseed. They all had good flavor and weren't too cakey/sweet. We also got bagel sandwiches - she got the lox and I got the bagel banh mi. Monuts is an interesting place because their doughnuts (or donuts as they call them) are only average, but their biscuits and breakfast sandwiches are above average. Durham doesn't have an excessive amount of great breakfast places so Monuts shines in a relatively uncompetitive field. It's not the classic chicken and biscuit that you'll find at NC's best examples like Sunrise Biscuits or Time Out (neither in Durham), but it's a darn close option. For Durham, I think it's as good as anywhere else. The turkey, bacon avocado sandwich is really tasty as well. This place moves pretty quickly, but is very popular so plan to give yourself a few extra minutes and be prepared to jockey for space when you're there if you go at the normal busy times. read more

Seating is on a first-come-first-serve basis after you place your order, and is pretty rare on busy mornings so be prepared to fight for a table/booth. Saving seats before you've ordered is also highly frowned upon. Their donut menu changes daily, but I highly recommend the chicken and pickle biscuit.
