My favorite Mexican restaurant in Wise & Lee county. Staff is friendly, food is great!

Tried this restaurant again. Horrible experience! They seem apathetic. Peach margarita tasted nothing like a margarita. Returned it. The woman I told was unresponsive and didn't care. Food was bland and guacamole was just blended green tomatillo but couldn't detect any avocado. Service was slow and they were sitting in the back of the restaurant talking to each other. Salsa was too sweet and we had to add salt to doctor it up. The salt shaker was dirty with caked on food. Gross Beef fajitas were served barely warm. Glass windows are dirty with children's finger prints, chair legs are splattered with dried food on them. Will never return! read more

When I travelled to Wise, VA (don't ask why I was there).. being in the country.. I didnt expect much from a Mexican restaurant. This place has good food for a decent price. Tastes very authentic. I have had two different dining experiences here and I will never have another. The first was when we had just finished eating and a roach walked down the wall beside the table, walked across the table up on my spoon and perched there looking around. When I showed a staff member the roach on the spoon he apologized and walked away leaving the roach to visit with us. Disgusting! The second was when my family and my aunt's family went there to eat (because they like it) and we were seated at a corner table. After sitting there a bit someone noticed a dead rat (not mouse) in the corner. Again disgusting! One of our friends who cleans restaurant equipment after closing has told us some horror stories about food being left out overnight but I won't even get into that. Eat at your own risk, if you do however I hope your experience is a lot better than ours. Good luck. read more

Monterey's is where you go is you want Mexican food is wise county. Walk on in and seat yourself. The staff will bring you out chips with a delicately sweetened salsa. It is the typical ordinary Mexican menu with a very cheap lunch section. Would be willing to throw them a 5 star rating but there still seems to be a language barrier between the customer and servers. Therefore a one star deduction but a delicious and quick meal. read more

Very unprofessional people who hung up 4x in a row when I made them aware that they put beef in my mom's veggie fajita order. I had made it very clear that we do not eat beef and pork and it is against our religion! Still on my mom's birthday we had to throw away her meal. After calling to request a refund and letting them know I would come in for it, the owner denied they made an error and after I said I would gladly send a picture hung up on me again. I am new to town and this was a very poor welcome and I would not recommend their service or food. Never been more disappointed. It is okay to make an error but to act so rudely and selfishly is terrible customer service! read more

My family and I went to Monterry last night. There was only one man working the section, and it because very busy. He did such a great job hustling around and making sure everyone's drinks were refilled as needed. Food came out hot and delicious. The best Mexican food I've had in a while. This place has the best Mexican food in the area and I have eaten at them all. The service is always great! The staff are very friendly and helpful. You get your food quickly and the food is always hot. We eat here at least once a week. It is my teen daughter's favorite restaurant and that is saying something since she is well-traveled and extremely picky. read more

We were starved after driving for hours on the crooked road and came across this hidden gem thanks to another yelp review. Simple and satisfying homemade Mexican staples of burritos, tacos, fajitas. Around here it's hard to find food that is delicious and healthy (ie. Not fried or some part of a cow). Monterrey was a welcome reprieve. Extra points for Dos Equis on draft. read more

I am not a big fan of this place. It seems they over charge depending on who is taking your check. I have eaten there twice in one week and ordered the same meal twice only to be charges 3 extra dollars with no explanation. I must admit I have not been back since I had a rather horrible incident that involved the place being closed for a week. read more
