The best endorsement I can give is, I would hire him again. We needed a old, leaky shower demo'ed to the studs and rebuilt from the ground up. Owner Brian came in with a fair price, was good with communication throughout and finished the job more/less within the time frame promised. Which are the key things you want when hiring a contractor. He was helpful with recommendations on tile suppliers and provided a quality plumber resource (but was fine if we wanted to use our own plumber). He and his team (Marco & Deo) delivered a high-quality shower. They were meticulous about each step of waterproofing and sealing and making sure the tiles were all placed like we wanted them and grouted and caulked beautifully. The whole team was cooperative and easy to work with, which is good when trying to juggle expected construction noise and adults working-from-home. Lastly, they are very good about placing protection for the carpets and other surfaces and each day they were very good about cleaning up so we didn't have to wade through construction debris each night. Brian and his team did a fabulous job installing our new travertine floor throughout our entire downstairs living area. They took the time to show us different pattern options and even worked with us to choose individual tiles used in the most visible prominent entry way and dining areas. Highly recommend! Brian did a fantastic job tiling our master bathroom shower. We used a herring bone tile for the floor and niche which required a lot of precision cuts and attention to detail. We also opted for a linear tiled floor drain which required a lot of attention. We also replaced the floor tile and it came out perfect. Based on reviews from Yelp and Nextdoor, I hired Brian from Monteiro Tile for a very small project that was as follows: (1) installing a Natural stone and glass mosaic in two bathroom niches, a small vanity backsplash, and as a feature strip in wainscoating, (2) cutting a recess in an existing tile floor for a tile heat register, and (3) tiling a linear drain with the floor tile. I was looking for someone very detailed and quality oriented - not the cheapest. Brian's bid was a bit high, but assured me of the detail and quality (explained that he had done mosaics that required shimming every mosaic), so I agreed. I'll start with the positives: Brian was on-time and friendly. He seemed careful in my home and cleaned up afterwards. The linear drain came out fine but the installation of mosaic and cutting in of the heat register are another story completely: The the overall attention to detail and using correct procedure leaves a sub-standard finished product that does not meet reasonable expectations in a number of areas: - The mosaics are not very flat or straight in many places. In some places you can tell where sheets join. Brian claims this is the material and how it came on the sheets, but then I think to his story of having to shim every mosaic and seeing only a handful of shims in mine. I expected a little out of flatness because one of the stone in the mosaic is a thicker gauge slate, but the rest should be flat (they all were flat on the full size store showroom sample). There are also too many crooked tiles for a simple 1x1 mosaic. - Finally came grouting. I'm thinking to myself that the grout will hide the installation imperfections and it may look OK. It does hide some of them, but not nearly enough. Also, the GROUT STAINED the primary stone in the mosaic that ties it to the rest of the bathroom! Brian says it is the material and shouldn't have happened because it is porcelain. I point out that it is not porcelain and is a natural porous stone. He says I can try acid wash or sand each stone down (maybe 500 of them) - he did give me sandpaper... I just called the manufacturer and a little pre-grout sealer is what was needed - this is also clearly stated in their installation instructions and is apparently common practice as an "always must-do" when grouting natural stone. - Cutting in the floor vent was a debacle. He just cut around the vent that was sitting there even though it wasn't placed straight. Just a bit of an eye for detail and he would have asked me. Instead he said he could replace the tiles at $25 each. I did have him open the hole in a larger rectangle that was straight and cut a couple of blanks for new registers to be made. He did better the second time around. Summary: friendly guy, shows up on time, relatively high-priced, sub-par quality. Also, I originally thought he had a good work ethic, but I think I mis-interpreted that as just rushing to get paid and get to the next job... In the end, I spent ~$1000 on 20 sqft of mosaic, $1250 on install, and now have mosaic that has taken on the wrong color due to Brian simply skipping the step of pre-grout sealing and with an installation that is mediocre, at best. BrIan claims he "is not responsible for the grout reacting with the tile," even though he did not follow proper installation. Hey stuff happens, mistakes happen - a good tradesperson (and they are out there) would fix it, learn from it, and not make the mistake again... In this case, it is extremely disappointing that he is not interested in fixing his mistake (thus, I am lowering from 2 star to 1 star). So basically, I need to decide how much acid wash and sanding do I try or if this was a complete expensive loss and start over. I still have to figure out how to finish out the heat register so it is OK. read more

If you are 100% sure your sub-floor is good and solid and know what's underneath your flooring when you take up the flooring job, then this guy is ok. His work is ok as far as tiling. But he won't do either base boarding to finish the room nor he knows any wood work in the event you need to fix some sub floor work before you layout your expensive tiles. I would not recommend Monteiro Tiles to anyone who is looking to "Upgrade" the look of their room. Rather hire someone who also does installing base boards and knows how to fix sub-floor in case you need it. Because, even with your expensive tiles, your room will look ugly without base boards. Now coming to our story, our sub floor had a water damage, which was uncovered during demo. We did not had new cabinets readily available on that day, so ended up simply completing the flooring job we contracted to do. At the end, we are not satisfied with his work and his false promises he kept on delivering throughout our communication. He kept on promising us that base board install can be done on the final day. After the tiles were laid out (previous day), on the final day his assistant showed up to finish grouting. In less than an hour, he finished the grouting (10* x 13* room) but forgot one corner, which left gaps. After he left, we saw what he has missed and thought we can show him the area he forgot to apply grouting, so he can finish that area. At around 2:30, both Brian and his assistant showed up and as he was entering our house, he started moving the refrigerator telling us that he need to leave as he has another appointment at 3. We showed him the area his assistant forgot to apply grouting. Instead of apologizing, he simply told us that they need to leave some gaps to avoid tile getting cracked. If that's the case, there should have the same gaps all along the border line. It was clear that he used his tactic to show the home owner that he is busy and needed to go some where else so they won't bother him with any small findings. He even forgot to install the stopper plates for the Gas stove. He hurriedly "finished" the work and collected the full payment and left. We now need to find a contractor to get the base board installed. We feel that we wasted our $4k investment by going with Monteiro Tiles. read more

I engaged Brian initially just to replace some loose tile in the main part of our master bathroom. We knew there was probably a little subfloor damage that might result in a bit more cost. But, as things turned out there was significant damage that meant replacing some structural elements and replacing the adjacent walk-in shower. This really went from a little repair work to a fairly major unplanned remodel job. I hired Monteiro Tile for my kitchen remodel. They did a great job with putting ceramic wood tile floor. This time around I asked them to also to the backsplash. They picked up the material in advance and showed up on time. About 2.5 people worked on it, and finished it in a little more than 2 days. Their prices matched a little above average, as per websites. They exceeded my expectations in terms of quality. I assumed 1/8" grout lines, and they achieved 1/16". My walls were uneven. So, we had to decide whether to go with subway pattern or a straight lay. I wanted to consult with my interior designer. Monteiro tile waited with 2 workers on hand, patiently for 1 hour for my designer to get back to me, and they conversed over FaceTime to resolve the issue. We were looking for someone to tear out our old shower tile floor and install a new tile floor. Brian gave us a quote that I thought was fair and we accepted. He was able to schedule my job for the following week 8 am on a Thursday. He was on time and didn't waste a minute, he remove the tile and concrete pan and installed a new dry pack concrete pan. He came back on Friday and installed the new tile in the morning and then came back in the evening to install the grout. He cleaned up after himself each day and the tile looks great.
