Came in around 1pm looking for breakfast. Very inviting and a good selection for food and drinks! A small shop for sure but totally worth visiting. Rob was very knowledgeable and easy going with no pressure even though I didn't know what to order. Got the breakfast Sammy with bacon . The bacon was crispy , the croissant was soft, and the cheese was meltyyyy. I just got an iced coffee with vanilla and almond milk. Delicious coffee and not too sweet. The coffee is the best in town here. Strong brew, no strange sweetly bitter flavor. The food is simple but delish. The owner Rob is the only one working there and he is friendly, generous and the heart of Old Town. This place is like Cheers, it's where the community comes in to hang out. My wife and I stumbled into Monte Rossa as first time patrons. Naturally, we had no idea of what to expect but we braved the unknown and put our order in, nonetheless. 1) Rob is beyond pleasant and seems to know everyone who comes in, along with their usual orders. 2) We ordered a Mexican Mocha and two Panini's; as simple as a Mexican Mocha is by definition, it seems to be a great indicator for any Barista. Rob's was absolutely perfect! 3) the Panini's were both a 10/10 with the quality of ingredients along with the pairing of their very own flavors, they were the best sandwiches we gave enjoyed in a very long time! 4) the vibe was very neighborhood driven and cordial. Got lost while visiting from Houston Texas and found a little piece of heaven in this place. I got a mixed smoothie (peach and mango) made by Robert. Which was absolutely one of the best smoothies I've ever had. Came with whipped cream which was new to me but it was an amazing touch. Definitely recommend! The best way to start your day if you're in the downtown Portland area in the midweek is at Monte Rossa's in Chinatown! Rob has been running this place for about 10 years and still takes care of each and every customer personally. More often than not, he'll remember your preferences after only a couple visits! I typically start my day here with either a double espresso or green tea. On days that I'm running behind, I can always count on the croissant breakfast sandwich (Rob makes his own amazing version of Dijon mustard!). The menu here ranges from sandwiches, subs, and paninis, salads, all the way to desserts such as cheesecakes, cakes, and muffins. The ambiance is comfortable, lots of regulars, super easy parking. Monte Rossa doesn't offer wifi as Rob would rather have his customers interact with each other. A couple tables with umbrellas outside is a perfect spot for those rare sunny Portland days. I give Monte Rossa 5 Stars for that comfortable non-corporate feel and because Rob is such a likeable guy. If you get a chance to pop in, tell him I said hi! read more

I think it's just one guy who works at this joint and he's an outstandingly kind, friendly man who has a lot of regulars. He runs the place in a somewhat shady part of town, and lots of small business like this in Portland have closed or moved due to vandalism and crime. It's like a boutique cafe. There isn't a lot of seating, some outside but only a couple tables. if more than 5-10 patrons came in there wouldn't be enough room. Best iced hazelnut latte I've ever had. Beats the milk out of Starbucks, and the owner/manager (didn't actually catch his name) really made this experience here memorable. My road trip buddies and I had stopped in Portland in September and were just meandering around the city when afternoon sluggishness hit us suddenly in Old Town, and we went on a serious mission for coffee. Somewhere around 4th Ave. there's an old sign in faded paint that screams COFFEE but we peeked our heads in all we saw were grungy men working on cars. Luckily, some grinning mechanics pointed us in the direction of Monte Rossa, and thank the sky they did. The owner was really friendly and nice, someone you can actually talk to, not just a salesman in a business suit, and the coffee tasted real and creamy. Something I have never encountered before: he asked me to taste my drink before I paid for it, to make sure I liked it. Unheard of! I was impressed. Furthermore, I accidentally spilled my drink after it was freshly made and approved of (like I said, my hazelnut latte was worlds above Starbucks, strong but not overdone, creamy but not too fake-sweet) because I tend to be unusually clumsy, and he offered to make me another one without hesitation. I was embarrassed but he was so genial and great about it. The other customers that came in seemed to frequent the place often and had a great rapport with our guy. In all my road trip encounters, this coffee shop ranks among the best. Great coffee drinks, impeccable customer service (though I would hesitate to call it service because he makes you seem like you're old time friends) and comfortable atmosphere with free wi-fi and tasteful music. I walked in, pissed off at the whole world today. By the time I left, it was rainbows and butterflies. Not sure who helped me, but he was a built guy with one of those Jersey Shore Italian accents? I had missed my train and resorted to catching a greyhound bus but had plenty of time to kill. I needed coffee and some foods and made my way past some unsavory characters but the trek was worth it.
