Probably the BEST Brunch spot in Portland, I have visited in the past 30 years. Missed your grandparents' cooking; these two elderly folks in their 80s kept it up. Why isn't there a line around the block? The prices are unbelievably reasonable, and the warmest service will melt your heart. It melted my 11B Veteran Heart. This is the kind of spot you'd be daydreaming about coming back to if you are out in a foxhole somewhere. Cash only, so go to the weed store a block away and get some from the arm, and pay respect to this amazing restaurant that makes you feel like family. read more

Cash only... just keep that in mind ok. It's totally worth it though!!! Such a nice family. Ordered steak, eggs, and hash. Also had the pancakes on the side. Steak was good and basic. Eggs perfectly cooked sunny side up, which very few people know how to do nowadays. The hash was DELICIOUS! I could have eaten two more servings. Yum The pancakes... oh the pancakes... were the fluffiest, tastiest, I've had anywhere on this beautiful Earth!!! I even ordered some to go! The inside is quaint and comfy. This was a great little spot. The prices were super reasonable. You will definitely get full off of one of their breakfast menu options. It's a lot more food for your money than you can find nowadays and the food is actually pretty good as well. You might have to find parking on the street with the meter, but it is worth it. I took a short 12 city block relaxing Saturday morning walk to John's Cafe. I decided on the pork steak daily special: 2 eggs over easy, 2 slices of wheat toast, and boneless pork steak. I was greeted by a very pleasant waitress, who informed me she has been the proprietor 52 years. My breakfast was cooked perfectly and my coffee was hot and refilled without having to ask. It is evident the cafe is patronized by locals and tourists alike and the business is locally family owned and operated. The cafe is small with 13 stool seats and 6-two seat tables and 3 larger tables. The cafe is a gem for downtown Portland's Pearl District. The cafe is cash only, no lunch service on Saturday and closed on Sunday . Open M-F 7-1:30 ish, but closes at noon on Saturday. I will definitely return to John's Cafe on a return visit to Portland. read more

Such a cute mom and pop place in Portland thats been open for 50 years. The prices for the meals are averaging at $10 and CASH ONLY! They have a vintage cash register that was just perfect to add to the ambiance here. The food was great and tasted like it was made with love. The people who own the shop are on the older side and very direct when it comes to ordering and service but I have nothing negative to say about this place. read more

This greasy spoon is conveniently close to Amtrak station but food was meh with small portions. Prices very cheap. Place was loaded with heroin junkies and transients at counter and just not a pleasant experience. The cook and waitress were an elderly Russian couple and very sweet people. read more

Took us a decade but we finally wandered down to this diner for breakfast. Irritated with ourselves - for waiting so long! Charming couple owns and runs the place. Clean and neat. Basic Breakfast fare. The sweetest lady who runs the cafe served us. Easy parking right on the street. We felt safe parking right on Everett St. They are open 7a-1p (they said that business has been slow since people dont return back to work around the area. They use to be open 6a-6p). I was in Portland for training and walked by this cafe a couple times in the evening when it was closed. Decided to try it on my last morning in town. I assume the two running it are a couple, just feels that way. She greets, though was a bit surlier with me than the regulars who came in later. Prices are amazing. I WANTED to try NY Steak for 9.95 but decided against it. Had ham and cheese omelet. He was the cook. It was fine, lots of ham. Good hash browns. Whitest wheat toast I've ever seen. She made the toast, lots of handling including applying melted butter with a ladle. I never saw her wash hands while handling money etc. Old school, germs build resistance! Coffee was weak diner fare. When I said I was done without finishing all my food She was shocked. Sorry, it's a lot! Got a nice goodbye so that was pleasant. Other than the toast prep (which happens at Denny's too, TBH) , place was clean and cozy. Check it out!! read more

I literally NEVER leave reviews, but I just had to! Super kind people! I didn't get any names, but the ladies up front were so kind and welcoming. The place has amazing and calming vibes (gen Z approved) As for the food, it was also amazing. If you like homemade food with heart in it, then you'll love the breakfast here. Nothing I ate was dry. Their eggs are perfectly how you ask for them. If I had to choose one place to eat breakfast for the rest of my life it'd be here. Thanks! read more

Old School diner that's been around since 1973. Not to many of these around, so a must visit for diner fans. They have plenty of breakfast and lunch options with most of the diner classics. I've had the John's Special (2 pancakes, 1 egg, 2 bacon or sausage links) as well as the Steak and Eggs. Both were very solid. This family run business has very affordable prices and takes cash only. read more

Things were a little better in my wife's mocha, which had a deep chocolate flavor and silky smooth milk, it paired well with the cinnamon knot pastry we shared. Maybe a place to stick with the milk drinks, or at least this was my experience on this day.

We stopped in here after playing a round at the Wonderwood Mini Golf. It had been hot and cramped and we really needed a drink. The door was being held open by a line of people and usually that is a great sign. Being busy is awesome for the business and I am glad they are so popular. It was a weekday, probably around 11 am and there were just so many people in line. It was really cute inside but SO chaotic. There were tons of kids screaming and at times it was difficult to tell where the line really was. After about 5 minutes of the line not moving, I started to get a slight headache from the noise and we agreed we would have to go somewhere else. It was probably for the best as all the indoor and outdoor seating was full so there would have been nowhere for us to eat even if we had braved the line. I think when a business reaches this level of popularity, it's important to put systems in place to keep patrons from feeling crowded and overwhelmed and it's definitely something they might want to look into in the future.

Hark! I hath traveled to John's Cafe for a morning feast and ordered the most wondrous hamburger steak breakfast special for the mere price of 9.95 shiny coins. And lo, the food was of the highest quality, a true delight to mine taste buds! The hamburger steak was cooked to perfection, juicy and full of flavor, and the eggs were cooked over easy, as I fancied. However, one must know that John's Cafe doth not accept any other form of currency, so make sure to bring plenty of coins on thy quest for sustenance! But fret not, for the workers were most friendly and the service was quick and efficient, making for a most delightful dining experience. The service... not the greatest... you'll get your order taken and your food in a timely manner but the service doesn't go beyond that.
