Playing catch up here. So it was the first Saturday in May which to comic book geeks both far and wide means "Free Comic Book Day" and oddly enough I was completely in the unaware about this comic store only a few hours earlier from my walking into the place. My learning about it was fortuitous as I had just left the famed Forbidden Planet and began talking to a nice family of fellow collectors about the packet of comic books that we had just received as a part of FCBD. We talked about where each of us were heading next and while I said Midtown Comics near Grand Central was my next stop they replied "Montasy Comics" was theirs. A quick Google search found the location and away I went. So the store is quite easy to get too but it might be something that you walk right past once you are in the vicinity since its not on the ground level and is instead upstairs. There is an elevator and stairs but I opted for the elevator. Once inside I immediately loved the layout of the place. There were numerous glass cases of collectible trading cards in the front where the staff usually is and while I am not one for those things they did seem to have an ample supply. Towards the end on opposing sides were racks and racks of new and recent comic books along with a myriad of collected editions and even scores of Funko Pops. If you collect the Pops, you're likely going to find a few that you like at Montasy Comics. The FCBD Stuff was being handed out by one of the staff in the rear of the shop and everything was already in bags to make this an easy free transaction. Sometimes, the free issues are all laid out for folks to pick and choose from but in this case it was not that way. I didn't go through anything and would save that reveal for a fun YouTube video but either way it felt like a decent amount of issues were in the bag and that is always nice to see. Generally with FCBD its nice to also try and make a purchase since while this event is free to customers the shops have to pay for all of the books. I was looking for a copy of "Sister Imperator" from Dark Horse Comics but they had no idea what I was talking about. It's an independent release about a Ghost band connected character but I digress. There was an upstairs but I didn't explore that and also they had a number of tables set up in the center of the store where they hold Magic and I guess Pokemon tournaments along with any other of the popular TCG (trading card games for the newbies). The visit was brief but overall a positive one. I will try to visit them again in the future if I am over there. I saw some complaints about high prices or lack of a refund on something that broke when the purchaser was putting it together and all I can say on that is when something becomes rare based on being limited or hard to get it will be more costly. As far as breakage during assembly, I've often found that it was due to improper practices by friends or even myself. A bit hard to find but once you do, it has a nice mix of cards, figurines, comic books, and other collectibles. There are a series of special sports rookie cards that are well priced compared to what's posted online. If you're a basketball fan like me, you'll find a good selection like rookie cards of Victor Wembenyama and OG Anunoby There's definitely a following of people who come here and play cards and a relaxed, comfortable setting. Although the shop is small, it is well located in Manhattan offering very competitive pricing. read more

Do not buy toys from here! My son and I stumbled upon this store last weekend while visiting from our home town. He purchased a rare Tetsuya Nomura Captain America from Montasy for 135.00 bucks, this past Sunday, a birthday gift to himself. We got home a few hours later and the figure actually broke upon trying to assemble. We did see the no returns no exchanges no refunds disclaimer on the receipt but still decided to try to reason with SOMEONE, since the toy literally broke upon assembly, only a few hours after he purchased it. We talked over the phone to a male worker there, who would not identify themselves or a person with more authority to help with decisions like this. Literally told us to "email" and if we were lucky, someone with authority might be able or willing to do something. This toy was old, but not used. They refused to even hear anything out. They didn't even help us look into where to get a number or email for the manufactures warranty, we found that on our own. Not a good way to treat paying customers especially 17 yr olds, who are spending their summer job money. Just beware when buying here we are currently seeking assistance from the manufacturer for this purchase. Just not good at all. Wish I could give 0 stars. read more

Went in to look for the New Overstreet Price Guide as I new it finally came out. No one had a clue what the Overstreet price guide was. They said whatever is out on the floor is what we have. If you sell comics you should at least know what the price guide is and check your upcoming orders to see if they ordered any. They used to have a second floor full of comics but got rid of that. Staff didn't acknowledge me but had one watching me. Ask If I am looking for something not watch to think I would steal anything in that store. As if. Montasy is no longer focused on comics. All I saw were cards and more cards.I get it you changed your focus. I felt there was a large amount of cards that were overpriced. I stopped going because I felt unwelcomed and you no longer really serve the comic book community. I am not sure how much longer you will be open for but Good luck anyway. read more

Pros: The location here is convenient in Midtown Manhattan Cons: -Limited inventory of single TCG cards and graded cards. -Awful pricing. Graded cards and singles are marked up too much, some double or more, and the staff members do not negotiate prices or offer price match based on common comps -Sealed products marked up significantly, just buy online -Shop seems a bit unhygienic, with sticky floors and old furniture. I left without finding anything I would buy or even negotiate a fair price for. Pro: nice space Con: the staff are clueless, the packs are overpriced, they can't negotiate the price down I bought 35 packs of Twilight Masquerade for $160!!! A booster box cost $125, I asked if i can get a discount because I am buying their whole inventory. The staffs doesn't really seem welcoming. This is the first and last time I will be going to this store. There is plenty of card shops that are more welcoming and gives you a fair deal and more knowledgeable of their inventory. If you somehow manage to find this store as a walk-in, keep on walking by. This place has some of the worst customer service I've experienced in a local comic shop, and that's saying something. They have a multitude of back issues that are apparently unavailable to look through, with no indication that they are off-limits to customers. I had already selected an issue from these boxes before I was informed they were off-limits and was harassed by multiple employees when attempting to purchase it. They clearly want to check pricing before they put them out, which is fine, but this was a $4 comic (according to the last sold eBay listing). They refused to sell it and made me feel unwelcome, so I did not purchase my other selections. I've never heard of a business not wanting someone to pay them. Some friendly business advice: Try marking the employee-only section of your books appropriately to avoid any confusion in the future. read more

I understand costs in midtown NYC will be high, but the prices for pokemon cards, especially graded cards, are very high. Slabs can be double what you see online, although sealed products are only marked up 20% or so. They do not have a large collection of pokemon singles, so I would only shop here if I was in a desperate rush for sealed products. otherwise anywhere online is cheaper read more

I typical go here for magic the gathering. Decent card shop if you are looking for something in the midtown area. Owner seems pretty money pressed, which I dont blame him in this economy. All in all this is more of a sit down and play type of spot. It doesnt really have great decor or smell. Prices are average. If you wanted to go to a place with friendlier staff and a good time, I would go to uncommons or hex & co. Otherwise, this spot will do in a pinch. read more

Never in my would I imagine a store treating a loyal customer soooo poorly. I had my bag stolen right off the table where I was opening packs. A bag containing a week's worth of my chemo medication.(leukemia) I had purchased.once I noticed my bag was gone I asked the working the counter to call the police, she refused, saying "if you want to call you can". So, I did, once the police came I asked them if they wanted to retrieve footage from the store, at which time the officer said "honestly, there's not much that can be done".... right. So, I took things into my own hands and called NBC news to see if they would show the video on the news to see if anyone recognized the guy who stole my bag. NBC asked me to retrieve the video from the store so they could do a story on this robbery. Montasy refused!!!!! Stating that they would only release the video to the police, those same police who said there's nothing that could be done. I even asked if they would email it directly to the news station....they refused and told me "this is the last time they would be responding" I had spent close to $2000 in that shop in 5 weeks and this is how they treated not only a customer, but a human being whos chemotherapy medication was stolen by another one of their customers. All I wanted was the video of the incident. Is that too much to ask?!?! read more

So disheartening. Do not buy sports cards here!This store marks all their prices way above comps and refuses to budge from their sticker prices. I can't speak to their non-sports stuff, but please carefully look up comps for any sports cards you are interested in. You will undoubtedly find they are asking for considerably more than what the card has been selling for. I didn't speak to them long before walking out, but they clearly know the only people buying their sports cards are collectors who aren't savvy enough to know they are getting ripped off. Montasy bends your comics. Shop elsewhere. Just started getting back into comics, I had stopped by on Free Comic Book day and made some purchases. I liked the convenient location, so I came back today for the lenticular edition of Flash 22. Adam, the man with the glasses, damaged my comic while bagging it. He refused to exchange or refund. Refused to even listen to me. The girl with glasses and short hair, she was evasive and unhelpful. All in all, extremely terrible customer service at Montasy Comics. Not coming back. Dear Yelpers, I recommend shopping​ at nearby JHU Comics and Midtown Comics, where the staff is actually friendly and eager to help. FYI, Midtown Comics has a FREE membership program that gives you $20 store credit for every $100 you spend--I'm unsatisfied to the point where I'll happily promote the competition! UNDERRATED. no one told me about this-- I just typed comic stores into apple maps and it was close to me so I checked it out. Ended up finding about 11 comics from the one's I've been collecting (buffyverse, but only dark horse) that I didn't have, and this has actually been the cheapest place I've found in nyc (so far). I also liked that they had tables so I could sort through my stuff without sitting on the ground like usual. read more

I was in NYC for my first time and am an avid collector of all things cards. I have to say, if you're staying in the immediate Times Square area, come here. MONTASY IS DOPE! Used to be a good game store. Customers are no longer able to play here even after purchasing products. Really disappointed.

The staff is terrible! I was on a business trip in NYC, and was super excited to come here. When I arrived, nobody helped me buy a product for 10 minutes. When someone finally helped me, I asked a question about an NFL box, and talked down to me like I was dumb. Cramped space, treats customers poorly. Treats staff just dreadfully. Not a great place to do Magic locals. An even worse place to get comics. Like, if you want to shop for comics while any Magic event is happening GOOD LUCK cause things get cramped in their small space really fast. For comics go to Midtown instead. I thought this was a cool place until today! I am a returning customer and have been for 5 years! Today I experienced the true colors of the store. I was going to purchase well over 500 dollars worth of packs and I have a fun way of picking out some packs is that I roll a dice and whatever number it lands on, I'll get that pack. The employee who is the biggest asshole gave me shit about it even though I already had purchased items and I left after getting into an argument with him and I will be talking to the owner about this! Ridiculous customer service. Never going there again. This employee was on a power trip and was super unprofessional. I can't remember his name but it was close to Richard which we all know what that means. Don't waste your time and money at this place! Montasy is a gem! I went there with my 11-year-old son and they very patiently answered every single question he asked (and then some). He was able to trade some Pokemon cards for store credit so he could, you guessed it, get more cards! Great merch & honest/ethical/nice people. Highly recommend! read more

The first thing I notice on this company's Yelp page is that they have two different locations. Oddly enough, both shops have the exact same review copy and pasted. Maybe someone visited and likes both shops. I think it is a little suspicious. I will just tell two stories and you can decide if you want to give this company business. Keep in mind I joined yelp just because I had such a bad experience. The first time I went here was Labor Day 2012. Granted they tried to stay open. On facebook and twitter, they were advertising some Magic: The Gathering event. Apparently, they didn't get enough support so they posted that they would be closing at 8pm for the holiday. At about 5 pm, I rang the doorbell to Montasy Comics in Manhattan. No answer. Rang it again, no answer. I was waiting for a friend so I stood there, assuming they were closed. About ten minutes later, someone else showed up and rang the doorbell, no answer. After a minute or two, someone appeared, dressed in a Montasy Comics shirt and quickly hurried out the door and said nothing other than, "Sorry we're closed." I had cash to spend in my pocket and I was just going to buy a nice leather deckbox I saw online. But no, he was too good, and too busy with NO CUSTOMERS inside, to let me in. Hmm, so I waited a week or two to give them a fair chance. I ring the bell and gladly I'm let in. The woman behind the counter was very helpful. My friend told me before they harass you to buy something if you want to play in the back, so I bought a few singles. The pricing was actually decent, it was looking good. Then I noticed the same short, grubby man from before. He was sitting behind the cash register, eating Chinese food. Unprofessional. I ask him if he buy's cards. Right away his response was "depending on condition". i said "Assume near mint." He said about half of what they are selling for on ebay. Fair enough. No qualms. Then I asked him if he buys graded cards. WOW, that struck a nerve. He got this real snippy tone with me and said, "Oh well I don't buy graded cards because everyone who buys them knows their value and condition and that really doesn't matter to me. Just because they think they're worth 1000 dollars or whatever." I said "I'm talking small change cards" to which he replied, "Whatever, I don't care." Let's look at the visual picture. I am about a foot and a half taller than him, and I am a combat veteran. I am in his store, buying cards, trying to 'support the little guy', and he is getting a tone with me. I took my zoloft that day, so I basically laughed and said okay. Then I asked him if it was ok if my friend and I played in the back room. Again, here comes the attitude, "If you buy something yup, you can play all day." I told him I just bought two cards and he said "You both have to buy something." Then I got mad and said, "Well I bought two, one is his" and gave him a dirty look. Finally he sat back down, shut up and ate his food. What is wrong with New Yorkers? Why does everyone have to be rude? Also, during the game, my friend went to ask the guy about a rule, and he admitted he had no clue and doesn't even play Magic. So you mean to tell me, the company hired someone who doesn't know the rules and doesn't even know what he's selling? He knew, he just wanted to give attitude again. I beg you, if you want to buy cards, or comics, go someplace where people at least value you as a customer. At this place, you are either a twenty dollar bill or a stray cat to be shoo'd away. You can buy cards online, don't worry about shipping. And you can play cards in any nearby deli or bar. I understand all of us Magic/Comic book people are a little antisocial. That doesn't mean if you own a store, you can be rude and disrespectful. i didn't go to Iraq and back to come here and get treated like crap. I was ready to spend hundreds of dollars that day. Hopefully 1,000,000 people will see this. This is all true, so if you don't like this review, get a time machine and show me the proper respect, Montasy. The best card shop in the city went out of business with the untimely demise of Neutral Grounds. I will clarify, I don't have a card shop or an online business. This is all non profit. I just think people deserve to be treated better and from now on, when I experience bad attitudes in the city, I will describe it in detail on yelp and maybe other review sites. I would hardly call this comic store, anymore. They mostly push magic and yugioh card. Small shop with almost no back issues. Employees who know nothing about comics. Also dropped off old Magic card to sell, they said they would count them and check them out. I check back in a week and they lost them. I don't write reviews for the most part, but this is nothing short of stupid. They "do not offer pricing" over the phone even for a simple item like the most recent booster pack, but have no problem letting you know what inventory they have. It's sad that you can't even respond after being asked why, as well. At least train your employees to properly talk their way out of a stupid policy. I live an hour away, was pretty easy to turn around and call a competitor, who had no issue telling me prices of inventory over the phone. Will be going there instead. Cool store otherwise, drafted there with my kid brother and had a blast, but this is pathetic business practice. read more

This is a really cool comic book and game shop. I stumbled upon it while walking to get lunch and I'm glad I stopped in. The people who work here are super friendly and let me creep about without being too pushy, which was cool. I liked the amount of cards they have, especially yu-gi-oh! cards (I secretly wish I still played) and the large gaming space in the back. I'm definitely going to check back in later on. read more

The store is clean and there are usually good turnouts . . . that's where the compliments end. One of my least favorite stores in any community coast to coast. $17.50 for a standard Mtg draft, and if you make it to the finals they are putting up chairs, start closing and trying to kick you out before you're even done. This store isn't about community which is sad because in NYC there are so many great players and passionate members of the mtg community. Also this store won't offer you store credit for your cards or winnings (for example: they won't let you roll over the store credit from winning a draft towards another future draft at the store). This is one of the most preposterous and foolish business decisions I've ever heard of. If you live nearby and need to scratch the magic itch stop by, otherwise play online or find a different store. read more

As a disclaimer, I'm a Magic player and not a Comic Book Buyer, so I won't comment on their selection there. Location: Outstanding! I live and work in Manhattan so this place is perfectly positioned for me since Grand Central is one of my main transit hubs. Tournaments: They have an event every day more or less, from Standard to Draft to Modern. Things run fairly smoothly. The prize support is a very flat structure, which favors giving prizes out to more players rather than loading a lot of prize at the top. Spikey players probably won't like this, but most are happy with it as far as I've seen. Singles: The Singles selection is decent, but their prices are a bit high for most people's tastes. Many stores will utilize TCG Mid prices (which most players have also adopted for the purposes of making trades), but I believe Montasy uses the mid price and then tacks on a couple dollars. Environment: Decent lighting, not terribly dirty, air conditioning. It can get a bit crowded, but what can you expect from a location as good as this? The chairs should be replaced with metal ones, as the plastic ones they use are incredibly flimsy. Overall I am very gracious this place exists. I used to play at JHU before they abandon shipped on their old location and their play space was a real dump (literally a dark, dank, disgusting basement not fit for human habitation), so that makes Montasy a true breath of fresh air. read more

If you're looking for comics, stay away from this place. Their pull list policy is horrible and most of their selection is damaged or mistreated. The people working there have no clue what's going on. I stop in and ask about teen titans back issues and Get told to look in a box under their back issues, I pick up the box to look through it and once I open it another person working there tells me I'm NOT supposed to be looking through it. Sad, this is the closest comic shop by my job and I'm all about small shops but with this service, I'd rather take the walk to midtown comics that's a few blocks away. read more

Super Nice Staff. There are MTG events each day, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Final Fantasy events weekly too. They also have a very large selection of comics and tcg to choose from. It is a good place to chill and meet friends. read more

Place has great price for magic boosters and their selection of singles was not too bad either. The staff is overall very friendly and helpful regarding any concerns. My most recent experience had me at first very worried because of some of the more negative reviews here but the way the staff handled it basically will keep me a loyal customer. Without going into too much details, after there was a small mistake with a purchase last night, the manager today was very helpful/understanding and rectified the mistake with no questions asked. Located right in the middle of midtown, there are tables in the back for playing games if you make a small purchase, and the staff in my experience has never been pushy toward my friends and I when we were playing there. If you work in Manhattan or just travelign through and you have any interest in card games or comics, I'd highly recommend checking this place out. read more
