I am from New York City and I know good food. I can tell you that Monsoon Indian Grill in Topeka, Kansas has New York-quality food. Excellent and delicious all around. My favorite dishes are the tandoori chicken, the lamb korma, the onion naan, and the rice pudding for dessert. But everything else on the menu is delicious! This place is tricky to locate as it is on the side of a Chipotle but it is well worth the search! I asked for a great indian restaurant and this is certainly the place to go in Topeka. What a gem! Virgil was our server and was top notch. He was a one man show and I don't know if I've ever seen someone do such an amazing job! I have eaten Indian food countless times, both at restaurants and at various family homes and events. And this food was some of the best I've had. We had a very pleasant surprise dining here! We're from the San Francisco Bay Area, where there are many, many Indian restaurants all over. The food here was excellent! We had the best lamb biryani with delicious seasoned fried onions on top. The portions are generous and reasonably priced. The service was superb! Even thought their hours say they are open Tuesdays till 9pm both Grub hub and their personal website will not let me place an order and say the business is closed until tomorrow. I called on the phone and the number just rang and rang. Either they had an emergency or they need to update their hours. I love Indian food and was excited to try this place as it was highly rated. I ordered chicken tikka masala and onion naan- something I hadn't tried before but the waitress recommended it. I wasn't sure what to expect as I'm not a big onion fan, but it was delicious and not over the top oniony at all. It came with a nice tangy side of raita. My friend had the plain naan and it was great too. It was a little softer inside and thicker than most naan, but crispy on the outside- perfect in my opinion. The chicken tikka masala however was not among the best I've had. I found it too sweet, but the chunks of chicken were tender and delicious. I also ordered a mango juice which was lovely, though it had too much ice and was therefore kind of hard to drink. The ambience was nice and comfortable, and the staff was very kind and helpful. I would like to come again to try a grill platter, as I had major envy seeing them brought out on sizzling display to other tables. From the outside the place looks sketchy- the entrance is in an alley with a dumpster nearby- but don't let that fool you. It is a nice, quiet place to have dinner. read more

Such yummy food. The buffet has been closed for awhile for obvious reasons and that's okay. They have great table service. It's a very casual environment and I always feel welcomed here. They are happy to answer any questions you have about the menu I like to double check on the vegan items sometimes. We mostly dine in for either the lunch buffet or dinner, but tonight I got carry out, so here's all three: Lunch: Typical buffet of Indian staples, usually very fresh and well seasoned. The only downside is that everything is served mild, and lamb is rarely an option. Dinner: Reasonably sized menu with enough variety to satisfy most anyone. I would love to see goat dishes in the future. Carry Out: Still a great option if you can't or don't want to dine in. While there's always going to be a slight difference between food served fresh from the kitchen and food that took a twenty minute car ride, it was still good in its own right, and really what could be expected. Overall, very friendly staff and a great atmosphere has kept me going back for at least the last seven years. read more

Monsoon Grill is a hidden gem tucked behind a Chipotle. I've been here a total of 3 times and each time has been absolutely wonderful. The gentleman who I believe to be the owner of the place remembers me and my family every time. Indian food is one of my favorite cuisines and I've been to several Indian restaurants in Atlanta and around Kansas City but I have to say Monsoon Grill has been my favorite hands down. Their Chicken Tikka Masala is, in my opinion, their best dish. Adequately creamy, not drowning in oil. Other dishes such as the Mixed Grill Platter and Lamb Curry are solid as well. Their unique dinnerware added a nice sophisticated touch to the presentation of each dish. I'm old (so I've eaten a lot of meals). And I used to travel A LOT (to places with great Indian food, like London). And live in Chicago (which has a whole strip of great Indian restaurants in an Indian neighborhood). So the last place I expected to be absolutely astonished by an Indian dinner was Topeka, Kansas. TOPEKA! KANSAS! There in the middle of big box stores and every chain restaurant imaginable was tucked Monsoon Grill. It was sublime. Subtle. Perfectly balanced between butteriness and clear and nuanced spices. And it was everything, from the samosas with a delicately flavored filling, not just bog standard potatoes and peas. Delicious. The Tikka Masala was out of this world, the garlic naan impossible to stop eating. It's worth finding them if you are ever near Topeka. I'm seriously considering whether the 8 hour drive there might not be worth the trip, just to have dinner one night and lunch before heading back to Colorado the next afternoon. And the folks working (and cooking!) there are absolutely delightful. I get happy and hungry just thinking about it while writing this. read more

Chicken Tikka Masala was a bit too bland (maybe we should not have ordered mild?) but still nice. Also had sizzling hot Tandoori chicken which was layered on a bed of fresh julienned onions and carrots. Ever since we rolled into Topeka, Kansas, my niece Julia had been begging me to take her to an Indian food buffet. So, luckily there was one right down the street from the Day's Inn that we were staying at! We came inside and I instantly liked the blue-green colors of the interior, I don't know why that has any significance but it just looks really cool. We were greeted by sir Rakesh, extraordinaire. Immediately, and without delay, he invited us to just go right ahead and grab plates and take food from the immense buffet and sit down and chow. This was really cool because after walking in the heat we were starving. They had vegetable pakora with the three sauces, yogurt sauce, mint chutney and tamarind chutney, butter chicken, eggplant, some goat meat stew, mixed vegetable biryani and white rice, and other selections. Rakesh came by frequently asking if we would like more naan, and when we did we realized it was fresh and warm. The waiter, some dude named Reston with musical skills, came by to see to it that we were enjoying everything. He was also very polite and extremely well-mannered. We ordered mango lassi in addition to the food (at an extra cost) and it was really tasty. The food was so incredibly good and full of flavor and spices that we ate too much, we just couldn't help it. Getting up and leaving was the hardest part. We had a nice conversation with the staff after we had paid, buying ourselves just a bit more time for the food to settle before we had to walk anywhere else. Everywhere we could see the place was spotless and sparkling clean. The restaurant is obviously very well-maintained. read more
