We ate here three times during our recent week in Albuquerque. The food was outstanding and the staff worked tirelessly to make sure we and everyone else were happy. It is an informal, friendly place with an upbeat ambiance. Mostly it was very crowded, always a good sign. Food was generous and home made and tasty. It also had the advantage of being a few minutes easy drive from our Hotel, very helpful when one doesn't know the neighborhood well. Our second visit was for lunch because it was a Friday in Lent and they had a lot of vegetarian offerings. We were on short time and knew we could get there and back to the conference easily and get a delicious lunch. I would strongly recommend this place. read more

The taco plate was very good. I ordered a combination taco plate. The sopapillas are also very good and the salsa has a kick. read more

Thank you Yelpers! Before we left New Mexico, I needed a sopaipilla fix-- searched Yelp and found this place. Excellent! The atmosphere is almost a bit divey diner, but the service was really fast and attentive, and the food delicious! I made my own meal of a chili relleno, blue corn chicken soft taco, beans, and sopaipillas, while the hubby got the Carne Adovada plate. Their main New Mexican dishes plates come with chips and salsa, while my create-your-own did not. I got EXACTLY what I wanted, though, and it was delicious!! This place is a seat-yourself-and-we'll-serve-you kind of establishment, and seemed to get really crowded at noon (we got there earlier). The food was excellent, and it was great for lunch! Wish we had food like this everywhere in SoCal. I love New Mexican food!! read more

I wanted to break away from the overtly touristy places in Old Town and was extremely satisfied with Monroe's. I was by myself on a quick trip and wanted to get the most authentic "New Mexican" food that I could find. The salsa was great, very fresh and with a nice kick to it. I ordered a Chile Relleno with Pork Avocado and wish I was eating that again right now. It was cheesy, flavorful and delicious and covered with red chile sauce. This was also my first experience with a sophapilla and I loved it too. I was full when it came to eat it but I still polished it off. I bought a jar of salsa, as well as some red chile sauce so I could replicate this meal back home. Stop in this place, you'll be happy you did! read more

This place not only looks like a place you'd find on Route 66, but also like a place you'd find in 1966. No frills, fast, friendly, throwback New Mexican restaurant posing as an aging diner. Food was good, not amazing... although the chicken enchilada in particular was a standout. I still need to try their green chile cheeseburger to see how it stacks up, especially since the menu touts its supposed legendary status. The red chile was a bit meh (my favorite red is probably Casa de Benavidez). The decor probably needed a remodel 20 years ago, now it feels either intentional, beyond help, "charming" and/or nostalgic depending on your point of view. read more

Wow! We were in town for the National Fiery Foods show. This was our second trip to Albuquerque. We were told about Monroes from someone at the show that said it was great. I wish we had found it our first trip. The ambiance is non-existent. Tables and chairs remind you of a diner. That's where it ends. The service was great. Extremely attentive. Some good local beers in bottles and cans. The food was AMAZING! Probably the best Southwestern food I have ever had. Tamales, burritos and tacos that are delicious! The chips and salsa were a great start. Salsa had a nice heat to it. We will be back whenever we are in the area. Probably more than once a trip. read more

I was surprised when I came to New Mexico and how strict their Covid restrictions were. No indoor dining. Doesn't make any sense to me when they close indoor dining restaurants when the numbers don't support it. Thank goodness they had outdoor heated dining, food was great and service was even better. I highly recommend getting the chicken fajitas enchilada style. Arepa style bread with honey was delicious too. read more

Super friendly & helpful staff. The food is phenomenal, coming from Indiana you may 'think' you've had Mexican food at your local 'mexican' restaurant but in reality you haven't until you've had Monroe's. The tamales done up in Christmas style is the best, fresh and flavorful! read more

I went there today for lunch. Firstly, let me say that I love the new location and the service. But I went there, not for the building nor for the service, but for the food. And as such, I'll have to comment on the food. I not only ordered the enchiladas, but the carne adovada enchiladas. Not only the carne adovada enchiladas but the the blue corn carne adovada enchiladas. Not only the blue corn, carne adovada enchiladas but the one with both green and red chile. What's more, I added an over medium egg on top of the blue corn, Xmas, carne adovada enchiladas. And do you know what it tasted like? Nada. Nothing. Absolutely no flavor whatsoever. I could have been eating white rice, cardboard or a glass of milk. I loaded it up with salt and pepper and it literally tasted like air with a fabricated piece of something solid in my mouth. I'm a native New Mexican and, as such, I absolutely LOVE flavor and spice. but the $18 meal at Monroe's fell woefully short of that. I won't be going back.... read more

I have been going there for years starting with the restaurant on Lomas but lately the food seems to have gone down .No taste I don't know but I just don't think it doesn't tastes like before the service has always been good that's all I got to say thank you read more

This place had a higher yelp rating than the other suggestion we got. Monroe's claims to be the best in New Mexico cuisine. I'd hate to see the worst. First of all let me highlight the positives. The service was great, I couldn't ask for any better. The salsa was really tasty. At first it comes across as mild then the picante kicks in. Finally the sopapilla was very good. I ordered the super combination and my wife ordered two cheese enchiladas with green chile sauce. Her plate came swimming in watery liquid and grease from the semi melted cheese though the plate was hot. She tried it and couldn't eat it, so she ordered a plain hamburger, well done. Again the burger came out greasy. My combination plate had an ample beef taco but it had a funky taste. The cheese enchilada was OK. I didn't have the liquid and grease problem. The tamale was just OK. There has to be better in Albuquerque for NM mexican. I should have realized something was different when the special of the day was fish & chips. We stay here about once a year while traveling through. I'll try a different place next time. read more

My families and I use Monroe's about weekly. My mom loves taking me there because of the Veggie menu. My sister loves it because her kids eat well. Everyone in the family has something they love. Today we all went for my dad's 88th birthday and for my parents 61st wedding anniversary! The blondish lady waitress was very helpful and attentive! I only order plant-based, no animal products, so thank you for having that menu! However, at the end of my meal I took a bite and there was a full piece of dead cow in my chewing. And the taste. I spit it into my napkin to my family's surprise! Concerned they all said, "What's wrong?!" I told them, and showed my sister the chewed piece of dead cow smashed in with the calabacitas. Horrible. The meal was about over so I didn't say anything but with my family's encouragement I told the bald, overweight cashier man. He was cold, uncaring, and walked off while I was sharing. The bald round man needs serious customer service training. He acted as if he had no soul. Someone could have been rendered into critical condition with that mistake. Literally. read more

While visiting from out of town we were on the hunt for the best green chili stew. Decided on Monroe's. The stew was just the right amount of spicy and texture although the potato pieces were a little too large and the pork cubes a little too small. The very mediocre review is for the chili rellenos. Most all places will fry the peppers and I guess that should be expected but these are almost inedible. They are dipped in batter so thick that it turns out like mush and soaks up all the grease. Had to scrape it all off and then the pepper itself was thin with very little stuffing. The beans are refried and bland. It may be "New Mexico" style to do refried but someone has to step up and make a better bean. Do not order this dish. Monroe's has been around a long time but someone in a place of authority needs to look at every detail and say, "We can do better". read more

Disappointed, waited to be seated but there was no wait and lots of tables. My husband had the taco salad it was decent. I ordered chicken fajitas, the chicken was in such small pieces, shriveled up and dry. Red and green peppers, but no onion, which should be standard. Fried ice cream had a bland outside crust. We found the whole meal lacking. The wait staff was pleasant, but the most annoying thing was how the manager went to each table checking on guests helping out the staff, patting backs, all around us but would walk right past us, just as he did while I stood at the front door. Missed the mark especially on Valentine's Day! Won't be returning anytime soon. read more

While we usually go to Monroe's other location, we had family in town staying at Kirtland's FamCamp so we visited this location with them. Arriving with a party of 7 we waited less than 5 minutes for a table to be set up for us. Service was excellent and the food was just what we've come to expect at Monroe's. The man taking people's payment was wonderful also and made us laugh. All in all, a great experience and one our family from Alaska will remember. read more

The new Monroe's Restaurant on fourth street is a testament to all the good things happening in the downtown area. They did a nice job with this location. There's private, street, and overflow parking, which in my opinion, makes it better than their Osuna location. Due to the changes in our world at the moment, today is the last day to dine in. After this, they will be accepting takeout and curbside orders. If you're craving some red or green, or are in need of blue corn chicken enchiladas, go to Monroe's. Their food is consistent, the staff is friendly, and this local business is deserving of all the takeout business it can get! I do believe they have the best local salsa too, which is carried in many local grocery stores if you can't make it downtown. read more

We came from North Carolina and were looking for a more local restaurant. They eagerly sat us (a group of 10, no less) immediately and we had excellent service. I lived in Albuquerque for 13 years and had never been to this spot until my most recent visit. I'm sorry I missed out on it for so long! I was happy to see they had local beer and enjoyed a La Cumbre Elevated IPA with my meal. My daughter got a bean burrito plate with no chile and I got a carne adovada burrito plate with red and green chile. The food was great! I've never seen my daughter gobble up food so fast. She finished her burrito plate before I finished mine. The carne adovada was delicious and so tender, it just fell apart between my fork's prongs and the chile was great too. read more

This was recommend to us by a new friend. We traveled from Georgia to here. We got here around 7:15 and they close at 8:00. They were pretty full and we decided to try thinking we were to late. They were gracious and wonderful. The food was perfect. All 3 grandchildren loved it. This is the day before Father's Day and they treated Gary with a sweet dessert. We also found out the server and the manager were father son so it felt like it was a local family and I always like to patron those types of restaurants. read more

Passing thru Albuquerque on our way to Colorado in search of some authentic New Mexican cuisine. Found this spot. Not quite authentic. The sauces are very bland. I'd say the best part of our meal was the salsa. We ordered the enchilada plate with 3 different types of enchiladas served with red sauce. Our taste buds were disappointed but the wait staff was very friendly. read more

Me and my girlfriend went there on a Saturday afternoon. First time for both of us. It looked like it got good reviews online. Not very busy. Got seated right away. Had one server bring us water. Then we never saw him again. We sat around for 15 min. Then another waiter passed by randomly and saw we were just sitting there. So he asked us if we had been served yet. We said we needed to order. So he apologized and took our order. Then we waited for 20 minutes. No food or service. Then that second waiter randomly asked if we had gotten our food. We said no, obviously. No food in front of us. So he went to the kitchen to check our order. Another 10 min of waiting. He comes back and says they had lost our order ticket. We were dumbfounded, angry, hungry. So we walked out and went to El Pinto, where we know it's good. Will never return. read more

I'm not a big New Mexican food fan, but i thought this place was good. The whole red or green chili thing is a bit strange to me since I am used to the taquerias in Northern CA putting enchilada sauce on and enchilada. I had a enchilada, a tamale, a taco, and a sopaipilla! My food was good, the service was fast and friendly, and the sopaipllia was fantastic. The beans were a little bland, and the salsa is kind of tomatoie. My Dad had a sandwich, and sweet potato fries that he seemed to enjoy. I searched for a place near my Dad's house that had sopaipillas and saw that it had good reviews so I decided to try it. read more

My favorite place to eat in Albuquerque. The chile (yes, that is spelled correctly) sauces are spot on, and I've never had a better sopapilla. If you have food allergies give them a call. I can't have anything with meat because they use a blend of oils that contains soy on their grill, but I can have my favorite dish of all time so it's all good - I get their cheese enchiladas with red chile sauce, beans and rice (and of course a sopapilla for desert). Hubby loves their combination platter, especially when he subs out the tamale for a relleno. When ordering the combination platter come hungry, because it is a lot of good Mexican food. Kind of like going to grandma's, you sit down and the food just keeps coming, thought at least here they don't expect you to clean your plate if you can't finish it. Just make sure you get a sopapilla, plain, and ask for honey. You'll thank me. read more

Enjoyed Green Chile Stew and Sopapilla stuffed with fajita chicken. We would highly recommend both. What really took this dining experience to the next level was the staff. Juan Buenrostro was super friendly and helpful making our dinner choices and went out of his way to make sure we tried the dessert Sopapillas, which were delicious. I was very excited to hear that we could now do patio dinning. I took my 80 year mom because she couldn't wait to sit at a restaurant. We were visiting from out of town and stopped here for lunch. It was really good! The owner greeted us and chatted with us for a little bit. We ordered, the chile rellenos were excellent, my husband had a breakfast burrito smothered in the green chile stew and he loved it and my son had a chicken burrito, it was good as well. The service was amazing. The owner came out as my son was getting ready to eat his sopapilla, he told him to wait and he went back to the kitchen and made him one that looked like a jellyfish! We went to the restroom and when I came back the owner was sitting at the table with my son, talking about football. The severs were fantastic as well, they are all a team, so everyone asks how you are, is willing to get you refills or something from the kitchen. Excellent service and good food! read more

I like their green chile a lot, but their (ground) beef taco truly hit the spot when I needed a crispy, salty, meaty beef explosion in my mouth. The salsa is very tomatoey, according to my friend. (I like it but don't expect to sweat.) The tamale and frijoles were yummy, yet the chili relleno was a shriveled up mess. I did order in so it must've been the container making it sweat and shrink perhaps? I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Especially because I love that the girl who answered the phone said she'd call my order into the Lomas location when we realized I had called the wrong Monroe's. When I called to double check the order had been placed - just in case - the guy was a prince about it (and of course she had placed it). I was reminded of their sopapillas from a decade ago, with the honey dripping down its golden edge. They are as crispy, light and fluffy as I remembered. Sigh. read more
