I understand this venue is historical and well-loved, but it is definitely toeing the line between preserved and fossilized. I came here with a large party for a recent family reunion, and everything was only just okay. Our standout impression was our server - she handled us all single-handedly and ensured we all had everything we needed. She was phenomenal. Unfortunately, the food is just fine and the interior isn't very interesting at all. Dirty, dingy, outdated. I ordered their French Sandwich, which was interesting. The dressing they used, which I asked on the side to dip my fries in, was the most exciting part. Tangy, garlicky, slightly spicy (not really) contrary to my uncle's spice tolerance. Everyone else's food looked passable, but nobody pointed out anything they particularly enjoyed. A warning, their large salads are HUGE - think the size of the salad bowl they give you at Olive Garden. The bread they give is plain, with butter in single-serve containers. I have loved Monroe for years but the the bar tenders ...one certain one) thinks she is really something. Two years tried to place an order by phone, she set the phone down after 15 minutes on hold just making a point I went while still being on hold and she was in the chatting and said can I help you I said well you can hang the phone up since I have been on hold 15 plus minutes and she said oh I was busy I said I can see that. This was the second time this happened same girl. I did talk to the owner and he more or less blew it off. I guess he thinks she makes money for him at the bar. I didn't go back for 1.5 year and half. The other day I called was on hold same girl saw my the name on the phone said hold on 8 minutes later and I was driving over just came over and hung up the phone. Called back on nieces phone and guess what else answered and took the ....order. This is totally uncalled for and I have spoke to others with the same experience and have not gone back. I don't believe I will be going back either. So sad because we do love the food but not into being treated so rude. I have gone when the daylight girl is there who is the best and very respectful! People like this need to be addressed not coddled because they think she makes them money "trying to look good". I don't think I will be returning anytime soon. Oh btw the order had items missing. I went to the Monroe Hotel for a friends birthday last weekend. We had an entire back area to ourselves and it was awesome. The menu offers a large variety and its pretty normal for pricing. I ordered the large chicken salad thinking the small would be too small and boy was I wrong. The large is huge!!! I actually took half home and ate it for lunch the next day. My friend got the Monroe Burger. It looked amazing. She was able to finish 3/4 of it too! I would love to go back and try one of their burgers. Our waitress was really great. A+ on service. We love stopping at the Monroe Hotel when we are in Butler. Very casual setting with no frills. The prices are reasonable, the menu is large, and service is great. We have tried the wings, salads, and several of the dinners. Aside from typical bar food, they also offer some very good specials and more upscale dinner options. The T & F sauce adds a special touch to wings and chicken. The hotel is off the beaten trail surrounded by some older factory or shop buildings. We went in the door that led to the bar and then entered the dining area, where a sign said "seat yourself." We picked a large table in the back under a bright light. After ordering some beers we ordered a Greek salad with shaved gyro meat, wings with garlic sauce, a Monroe burger, and a chef salad. The waitress was pleasant and friendly. The wings were tasty, but needed some hot sauce. The chef salad was forgettable due to the processed cheese, and the turkey and ham lunch neat. We enjoyed the burger. My wife and I split it. Even though we had it cooked medium well, it was still juicy. At first, I thought there was bit too much bun, but the bread was soft and compressed well after a few bites making the bun to meat ratio perfect. The tomato, mayo, melted cheese and lettuce made for a sloppy, sloppy but enjoyable burger. Our friends enjoyed their beers and wings, and were way too full to touch their salad, so off it went into styrofoam coffin for a future midnight snack. The food at the Monroe is basic faire. Glad I gave this place another try. A few months back I drove from PGH to butler only for them to be closed with hours not updated on website. I called in advance yesterday just in case. Absolutely delicious sandwich appropriately called "the belly buster" (meatball, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, and cheese then baked). Also a side of angel hair Alfredo. Worst food and service we have ever had here. Not enough help. Waited at table for service for 15 minutes thought moving would have helped out. It didn't. Moved dirty dishes on bar and walked away. I asked to wipe off bar before ordering food. So they did. Took forever finally ordered. Food was par, ordered hamburger and bun was heated but was hard as it could be. I ordered chicken sandwich. I just wanted the chicken, it was hard and dry. No juice or flavor. Very disappointed, owner walking around not helping service staff who couldn't keep up. Sorry we came back. Very disappointing. First, we ordered to go. The person on the phone was very nice. When we went in to pick up we went to diningroom. No where were there signs directing to pick up orders in bar. So we stood in diningroom at mai·tre d' stand. For about five minutes. No one acknowledged us, even though several staffers saw us. So we then left and went to the bar. I was trying to avoid this as reeks of smoke just in the lobby, much less what the bar smells like. Bartender immediately came over and went back and someone then brought out our order. Two fish sandwiches. One fries, one chips, side of Cole slaw. Chips are seasoned possibly with old bay. Regular fries, not fresh cut. Good slaw. But the fish. Ugh. Dry, overcooked and almost chewy , not meaty at all. So disappointed. Good Friday in Lent. Lunch time. During Covid. Not super busy. No excuse. Not sure we will give them a second shot. We love the Monroe Hotel. The mediterranean chicken is to die for!!! You won't be disappointed!

Went there for the first time for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. When you walk in you have the option of going into the Bar/Lounge or the restaurant. We chose to sit in the restaurant and got to seat our selves anywhere. We got there a little after they opened and really had the pick of tables, but within the hour the place was packed. I was surprised at how big it actually was, and the staff super friendly and quick to acknowledge you. The server almost immediately took our beverage order and asked is we like some French bread to start off with. We ordered their fish and chips platter as well as the Ruben sandwich with fries and a side cup of their Wedding Soup. The wedding soup was the best tasting I've had in a long time and highly recommend it. The fish and chips was a breaded fillet with tarter sauce and homemade chips with BBQ sauce drizzled over the chips. We asked for malt vinegar and they brought it no problem. It also came with a side order of coleslaw. The Ruben sandwich was the absolute best I've had in years with a side order of fries. There was no skimping on either of the meals. The total bill came to $30.00 with a tip. I highly recommend this restaurant, and will be back. You will NOT be disappointed. read more

I work in butler and had never heard of this place before. Found it on Yelp and figured we would give it a try! The bar and dining area are separated. You can smoke in the bar, so the hallway connecting the two smells like cigarettes. I was happy to find there was no cigarette smell in the dining room. The food was loaded with flavor and very filling. This is definitely some authentic Italian cooking for a great price. In my opinion, they're prices are low for the amount of food you get.
