This place is amazing. In the summer it transforms into a water park AND a skate park. An indoor track is nice during the winter. Yoga, Zumba, Hip Hop, Tai Chi etc. They offer art classes, workshops, nature activities and have adaptive options as well. Oh also an indoor pool and Pickleball courts! Must go at least once to see for yourself. Fantastic views overlooking the Monon trail. So fun for dog watching! Updating my review, because my last one was eight (8!) years old. Since my last review, the Monon Community Center has become my second home, my "third place," if you will. (Will you?) The Monon Community Center is amazing in so many ways. I love the variety of the gym equipment available, even though I mostly only use the ellipticals. I love the knowledgeable instructors who teach the yoga classes; some of these people have had such an impact in my life. I love the friendly people behind the counter who are supremely helpful and kind every day. This is a peaceful and clean and welcoming gym for everyone. It has FREE childcare up to 2 hours, that means you can do a class, swim, sit in the nice quiet sauna while your kid can play and make friends? Yes please! I think I was told no more than a 1 adult to 16 kid ratio, so reservations are preferred. But that is a great perk. They also have fun machines, great facility. Want to play basketball or even Pickleball? Yes sign up for a tournament. (Though that might cost a little extra.) I do miss the days when you could just walk in and use the track easily. I remember many years ago a girl would randomly come and do a free hoola hoop dance and exercise too with some of the open space. But now it's only free for Carmel residents, but I get it. They expanded, and are constantly getting more machines in. I appreciate that you can get a Day pass for $12. For most yoga studios it's at least $20 for a drop in, without the option for a kidzone to let your child socialize. I think it's a great space and am grateful to have it in the community. read more

I'm in desperate need of water and floating these days and so much so that we drove 30+ minutes to the Monon Center and waited 45 minutes in line to get inside and float around on the lazy river for an hour. Typically, I visit the Monon Community Center for their adult nights (which are quite lovely and often sell out). During this particular fourth of July weekend visit, it appeared that everyone and their brother had the same idea in mind for the weekend. So many people had full on picnics, lawn chairs, etc. packed for the day. This review is mostly of the aquatics center although they do have robust indoor offerings like fitness classes, indoor water aerobics and so on. One of my favorite things about the Monon Community Center is the lush grounds that surround the property with trails and that it's located directly on the Monon Trail. Half the fun is outside the actual building enjoying their picnic benches and lush green spaces. I'm glad they opted for the natural wildlife look. As for the very popular aquatics center, you'll find a decently sized lazy river, baby friendly pool areas, several water slides, a lap pool, plentiful grass and picnic areas and a few spots for snacks like snow cone stand. Tip alert: Note that you have to purchase a lock for the outdoor lockers but they have free and very clean lockers inside! It was so nice to clean up after our dip inside the air conditioning and take advantage of their wet suit tumbler before hitting the road back to downtown. Overall, a Carmel treasure. read more

The community pool at MCC was great for the whole family. There were plenty of parking and reasonable priced per person and child. We got there early can be and to my surprise the line was long but once the pool's gates open - the lines was fast. They have police to search your bags for alcohol which was not permitted at this location. Seems every one has got their spots reserved and we were happy to find a spot by the trees (which goes fast). The food lines was long and can be expensive. Only negative I have is the crowding and people tend to crown you on purpose to get your spot under a tree. Overall, the MCC is great place to enjoy the sun and cool off in the pool. read more

I'be tried multiple gyms in the area, as well as workout class studios, and the Monon Center is top 2 of my favorites. They've got hundreds of different pieces of equipment from multiple types of treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, weight machines, etc. There's an indoor track, pools, and basketball courts. Outside there's a skatepark, the water park, and of course the facility sits right on the monon trail. Workout classes are included in your membership too which is great. There's plenty of bike rakes out front if you choose to even bike here. It's a super friendly environment that I always feel comfortable working out in. The locker rooms are spacious and a sauna sits in the back of it. The staff is diligent to ensure equipment is well kept and are always wiping down/sanitizing even though disinfectant wipes are everywhere for users to also utilize themselves. The price of a membership has gone up, but I'd still commit to coming here for all it offers! read more

I have been a member at the Monon Center for about a year now. It is a beautiful and well maintained facility with kind employees. I love the classes, I have taken Zumba, cycle, and a smattering of others. Classes really help me be motivated to work out so that is why I joined here rather than the more affordable options elsewhere. If you have health insurance I would look to see if you can get a discount using a service through them on a gym membership. I pay a little more than half the regular rate to go here through Active & Fit with BCBS. I do wish there were more varying times for classes. I would like some in the afternoons and evenings on weekends especially. Also more times for drop in pickle ball for those that work 9-5 hours. They also do a monthly challenge with goals to reach where you can win things. I enter most months and I have won a duffle bag, coffee tumbler, and Apple AirPods! I don't know if I am just lucky or if that reflects how few people enter the contests. Anyway, I highly recommend this gym!! You also get access to the water park in the summer, but it is very very crowded with people and it wasn't as relaxing as I'd hoped. I also wish they had an indoor pool reserved for casual swimming instead of just lanes and slides. read more

The Monon's indoor waterpark is a fantastic way to beat the cold winter blues! After filling out some waivers on the computers, located immediately to your right as you walk in, I paid $11 for a day pass for myself. My toddler granddaughters were free. The nice guy at the desk told me that my receipt would get us in for the rest of the day, should we want to leave and come back. Once inside the "locker room" area to the pool, I was thrilled to find several private family changing rooms. Inside each room is a spacious bathroom stall with a toddler seat for little ones to sit and wait on their caretaker. There's also a nice sized area with a sink/mirror and a changing table, stocked with sanitary liners, and even a nice sized shower area and a bench to sit. It made it so much easier for me, needing to change and dress 2 toddlers on my own and contain them while I changed and took care of my own needs. We found the family changing rooms we used both times to be clean and tidy. Lockers are available, free of charge, with digital locks that you set the code on. I greatly appreciated that! The pool was just warm enough that it felt pleasant getting into but not to hot. I definitely appreciated the warm water and so did my infant granddaughter, who joined us with her Mommy. My toddler granddaughters enjoyed nearly 3 hours of play before we got them to leave easily, they were so tired from such a great playdate. Even tho it was a Saturday, we did not find it crowded at all and really enjoyed ourselves. read more

The Monon Community Center in Carmel, IN is nice and at a great location. They have a nice gym with a walking / jogging track. The exercise equipment is in great shape and there are plenty to choose from. Many great classes exist like yoga, dance, children's activities. However, it gets over crowded quickly. If you want to stretch or do yoga on your own (not in a class), there is no place to do this - you have to find a corner. A gym with out a place to stretch, makes little or no sense to me. The food that they sell is junk food - chips for lunch at an exercise location seems odd. I do like that you can have a membership month to month without contracts.... read more

Staff is friendly. Facility is nice. Outdoor trails are nice for nature walks. I enjoy the water parks for my children. BUT the workout area has not much to be desired. There is one machine for everything. If it's busy you are lucky to be able to have a proper workout. I feel like I am working out on top of people. I'm honestly surprised it hasn't been addressed? There is a sitting area right outside that hardly anybody utilizes. So much wasted space considering the place is huge. Definitely feel like upstairs was an after thought. I have been a member of the Monon Center many times on and off across the ten years I've lived in Carmel. Its a good place, often busy... The group classes are varied and I took a few decent yoga classes there. The workout room is quite large with many options for everone- free weights, weight machines, treadmills and bikes of all kinds. My son loves to play pick up basketball there (when the big kids/adults let him) and the pools are nice when they aren't crammed. Although the indoor slides seem to always be closed. Our oldest kids took swim lessons at the Monon and progressed quite nicely I would give a 4.5 star if they were better with customer service. My son was diagnosed with covid and they refused to pause his membership for 2 weeks to allow him time to quarantine. Of course, they don't HAVE to do this, however given the current state of the health crisis, I expect them to make reasonable accommodations, as so many other businesses have done, to ease the burden on the communities they serve. read more

Stellar hub for the community! Why is it awesome? -Water park: From the lazy river to the fun slides, there's fun for all ages. We used to come here when we were in middle school, but as an adult, you can also opt for a lawn chair or tube. There's also a surf/wave pool so you can attempt surfing. -Variety of exercise classes: I've been to yoga and Zumba, and the teachers have always been great. I also took a water aerobics class once and it was a blast. -Indoor track: my friends and I would come here when home from college and catch up while we walked the track to get steps in. Nice to have that option and there's usually people on it to keep you motivated. -Workout equipment: It's nice and I like that there's always others working out so I'm motivated. -Dog park: never been but seems nice! -Skate park: not a skater but fun to watch! You need a membership to use the indoor facilities, but you can pay to go to the water park for the day (I forget how much). Overstaffed = Overpriced As I entered the MCC last month, I saw seven (7) staff people in the MCC shirts behind the registration desk. I noticed that none of the staff said, "Hello, welcome to the Monon Community Center" to those who swiped their cards upon entering the gates. I also noticed that none of the staff said, "Thank you for coming to the Monon Community Center" to departing patrons. Hint to the Director: time for a refresher training session on basic customer relations? I did noticed that the seven were either engaged in their own conversations, staring blankly into the empty lobby, or busy looking at their computer screens. If MCC is paying seven (7) people to staff a registration desk that needs one person to monitor the swiped cards, one person to collect money from non-members, and a third person to answer difficult questions or resolve customer disputes, what are the other four people doing? Perhaps saving on staff costs would allow the Director to reconsider the MCC pricing structure. It cost our young child $13 to swim indoors for an hour. Ouch! That almost paid for one of those desk workers to stand behind the registration desk for an hour. read more

I have used the Monon Center since 2011. It's been a wonder addition to my life with exercise and meeting some very nice friends. This year is a completely different experience . For years we have taken 2-3 swim aerobic classes a day and we didn't have limits. It was just introduced this summer we could only take 1 class a day but rather than telling all the members the truth they changed their reservation system to confuse everyone. The instructors told us for the summer we would have more classes but fewer participants in each class. Thru out this process responsible mangers have not communicated to members of the Monon center. Shannon and supervisors, Alexa suppressed the truth. I'm hoping the manager of the center Michael Normand steps up and corrects this problem. Very disappointing and considering Michael just took over and I wonder what his take is on the fiasco. read more

This place has so much potential. Positives: the facility is huge and really clean; the different areas feel almost luxurious, like the water park and the track and the couches to chill on and the skate park... it's really cool that we have this in Carmel; the equipment seems to be in good shape and well taken care of; the staff is friendly enough; there are loads of classes; the child care is an incredible perk. Cons: There isn't enough circuit training equipment. It's one almost complete circuit, but people park themselves on the machines and don't let others work in. I've given up trying to do a weight training routine here because it's just impossible to be consistent due to lack of enough equipment for the number of people trying to use it (I've never had to wait for cardio equipment though). Second, are the staff volunteers or employees or a mix? They're nice enough, but usually have their heads buried in a book or on a phone. They don't seem to engage unless you get their attention. What are they supposed to be doing? Finally, proper gym etiquette should be enforced. So often people are having a loud conversation on speaker phone while on the treadmill or they're listening to music through a speaker while walking on the track (or they park for 10 minutes on a machine and don't let anyone else work in as mentioned above). All in all, I like that it's a community center and I go here to get my cardio on, but I wish I could actually use it as my gym for weight training. In its current state, I can't. read more

All for show. Not designed to handle the ever growing number of customers. Classrooms too small and poorly ventilated when compared to other fitness facilities. Parking lot poorly designed. There are several areas where tall grass blocks traffic. Not enough fitness equipment. Indoor pool temp way too cold for many. Classes do not last a full hour. Crazy sign up system for popular classes and not enough spots in the class. Outdoor pool way too crowded. Showers in the upstairs women's locker room take forever to heat up. Locker room too small. Staff sits idle mainly doing nothing. They don't need that many workers, and the cost adds up. On the positive side, the outdoor nature areas (free) are gorgeous and well kept. I only came to the outdoor water park. On a Monday during the summer. The line started forming before it even opened which was annoying. But I quickly realized once I got in that it was because everyone was scrambling to get a shady spot to set their things. They had quite a few chairs but not a ton of shade. I kind of wish they had a few more umbrellas or something so people with little kids had a place to go if their kiddos got too hot or needed a rest in the shade. Guess you just have to stand in line 30 min early for that. The park itself was nice. There was something for all ages and abilities. I was worried my 3 year old wouldn't be able to do much since he isn't great at swimming yet but there was a ton for his age level and size. He loved the kiddie slide/kiddie pool area. My older kid enjoyed the water slides and water surfing. We didn't try the food because the line was too long. But overall it's a nice clean park and I'd come back for sure. This is just a review of the indoor pool only. As of February 2019, the price for admission to the pool was $11 for adults and $8 for children. (I was not charged for my 2 year old.) We had to fill out a waiver on the computer before we could be admitted. I wish I had known that before we went as apparently we could have filed it out online ahead of time instead of doing it in the lobby while keeping track of excited kids and swim gear. The family changing rooms were clean and had plenty of privacy and space. There are free wall lockers to store your items. (No lock required - you set the code.) The pool itself was clean and the water was warm. There were lots of free life jackets to borrow in various sizes. However, most of the toddlers/preschoolers in the pool were wearing their own puddle jumpers. The bigger kids loved the 2 water slides. The slides required a minimum height of 48 inches. I was confused about where I needed to park to use the pool. We entered off of Westfield Blvd onto Central Park Drive East but should have taken 111th Street instead. Since we went in the "wrong" entrance we had to trek up and down stairs and across a walkway into another building. read more

My wife and I attended one of the evening mixers at the water park here. The park is pretty awesome in terms of the attractions offered. There were several kinds of water slides in several different types/sizes/depths of pools. There's a "flow rider" surf simulator for anyone brave enough to body board or even stand up and full on surf. One gentleman kept circling back into line and had it mastered so well that I'm certain he must have grown up in California or somewhere more surf friendly than Indy! For the mixer there was also a live band and food trucks and tents available. If you're looking specifically at attending one of those evening mixers, it's a pretty good time. We probably most enjoyed a float down the lazy river. Good time just floating along and listening to the band. We later tried to go back on a weekend day with our sons. That didn't happen. We got there just fine--even had some passes so no worries getting in. But the crowd was insane. We just stopped in the parking lot and looked through the fence to see the mosh pit level of people crowded in. Not really a bad thing for the park at all, but definitely something to keep in mind if you're thinking this might be a fun Sunday afternoon summer activity. read more

There is typically a line wrapped around the entire pool where nonmembers wait to gain entry. There is no hot tub. There is no military discounts. There's no student discounts. I have been a member for 8 years and attended classes both in doors and outdoors in winter and summer. This is no longer enjoyable. There is never parking. You need to come early to drive around looking for a spot. And now they do not offer enough classes. I understand rooms are only so big and pools can only hold so many people, but they need to offer more classes. It seems like membership has grown significantly, but the Monon Center can't keep up. It is not awesome to wait in line. Especially in the 90 degree heat outside with no shade or chairs. I like to attend water walking and deep water, but now you can't do both. You must get in line to be one of the 28 people who are allowed a spot. Do not leave the line to go to the restroom or grab your water you left in your bag. Or sunscreen. I actually got sunburned waiting in line, but was told if I left the line I had to go to the end of it. Why are they not offering more classes? The deep water pool sits empty during the 8am walking class. Or at least have a second class so the 10-15 people who are turned away have something to do after standing in line for half an hour. Most people count and just leave so there is no true number of how many people have been made to go home without being able to workout. Now women who have been friends for years are being made to compete for the 28 spots. They run in from the parking lot and bicker with each other about who was in line and who deserves a spot. Then Wednesday the teacher of the class took 10 minutes of the precious 50 min to lecture us about the rules of not leaving the line and not saving spots for people who have to go to the restroom. I didn't wait in line for half hour to miss 10 min of a class and be lectured. She told an older women who had just gotten a knee replacement that she should feel bad for taking the spot from others. In what world is it okay to tell people they don't deserve a spot when they pay just like everyone else! I have only missed the cutoff once, but it is sad to see people turned away and sad to see people upset with each other over not getting a spot. At this point we will have to camp out to get a spot. I wonder if we can use the cabanas to sleep in to be there early enough? The Monon Center needs to step up and fix this mess. More classes need to be offered. On Fridays when there is a class at the same time as deep water there hasn't yet been an issue. And when you ask to speak to someone they just tell you to go the app to register a complaint. Then they ignore it. They don't care and the answer is always we don't know or I am not in charge, but they will not let you talk to anyone who is in charge. I am not sure they know. Or whoever is in charge has told people to not bother them. I know last year the lady just turned off her phone and wouldn't come out and then just said she would end all classes! read more

Came to the pool while in town visiting. It was a very nice pool, and the lifeguards aren't huge Nazi's like some of the ones in some of the St Louis area pools. The only drawback was that we went in the afternoon when it was half price and I think due to that fact it was a peak busy time. I mean it was super busy. I think maybe the busiest pool I've ever been too. I would just recommend checking out the peak busy times on google before coming.It can be a bit much. read more

My favorite part about this gym is how involved they are with individuals with special needs. I see many people with disabilities working there as well as in the classes each time I go and it makes me so happy I belong to this gym each time I see it. I do the yoga cycle and Pilates classes weekly as well as my own workouts. I prefer fast paced yoga so I really enjoy Shannon, penny, and Kimberly. My only suggestion would be to add a smoothie/protein shake bar as an option to purchase before or after a workout. It would also be nice if during the water park hours they had either an early entrance or sort of a separate designated area for people paying for the monthly membership. It gets extremely crowded by day pass users it isn't enjoyable by noon. Other than that I'm so glad I found this gym. I drive all the way to Carmel from Geist for it! read more

SPLASH!!!! Who wants to go swimming? This place is super-duper fun! I visited the Monon Center for a friend's birthday celebration and found myself pleasantly surprised. The center has several large pools, water slides, a lazy river, climbing wall, and more. There is also a concession stand with reasonably priced snacks and treats available. My friend rented one of the on-site cabanas which run around $49 on weekdays and $79 on weekends for the 8x8 size. Trust me when I say that it's a worthwhile investment. The cabanas offer shaded seating, locked storage, and allow you to bring in your own food. I'm not a huge swimming pool fan (am I the only one who HATES swimsuit shopping?), but I will definitely be back at the Monon Center soon. The water slides and lazy river are fun for kids and adults alike. The lazy river offers some much needed relaxation, and the more adventurous members of your party are sure to enjoy the wave rider. Just don't wipe out. I WILL laugh at you, LOL. This is a great outing for families or for an adult-only fun day. There's truly something for everyone. Surf's up! read more

I've been a member for 4 years & ever since Covid it's been more than frustrating to get a proper response from anyone regarding aqua classes. As a result of management's lack of listening or helping I explored other options and joined the YMCA. Since I've been more than satisfied with the Y adding classes let alone increasing class size since March, there's been a dozen others follow me over there and left the Monon. I like the Monon facility and love the Tuesday Thursday aqua classes at the Monon bc of the instructor Joy, but limiting the class size to only 12, that's TWELVE, people is so ridiculous we have to set a 5 am alarm to sign in, but today it was nearly full with 10/12 signed up by 5:01. The Monon is not willing to open up another lane for a 50 minute class to expand the class size to accept more participants yet there are empty lap lanes every time to make space but management refuses to make allowances and doesn't care. We're tired of being ignored. Classes were not only reduced in sizes, the number was also cut in offerings. There used to be 2 classes at least 3 times a week before Covid, now just one class 4 days a week plus one addition one day. That's just sad. If they expect people to join management needs to respond by listening and helping positively to its constituents. I don't see that ever happening anytime soon. read more

The Monon Center has a fantastic Adaptive program that ranges from yoga, crafts, to swim lessons. I have been taking my son to adaptive swim lessons (private) for over 5years now. All the swim instructors have been fantastic and patient with him. The private lessons are very affordable too, ~$150 for 10 lessons. read more

we were members for 1 month. we purchased a family membership for myself, our Au Pair who is an adult living in our household, and our 3 children. I was told that this was fine when signing up. After our Au Pair went to the facility we were told that she wasn't a parent or my spouse so she couldn't be part of the family membership. Nowhere in the contract does it say parent or spouse. our Au Pair is not Caucasian and is disabled, after 2 visits she was taken off our membership by the monon center, not at our instruction and told she couldn't be the other "adult" on the family membership and would have to pay an additional $50 a month, even though she is a contracted caregiver that lives with us. DISCRIMINATION. We had already booked a pool party with the Monon center and during the party a kid (not from our party) pooped in the pool. it is $370 for the pool party for 10 kids and 4 adults, we had 23 people there, thus paid significantly more than that. the "code brown" as they call it caused the pool to be shut down for about an hour of our contracted party time (4-7pm) not that anyone really wanted to get it in after the poop incident and with less than an hour remaining. I was told by both Jennifer Roberts and John Lampey that I would not be refunded any portion of the party costs, even though the pool we paid to use was unusable and everyone was ordered out of the pool, essentially ruining the birthday party for a group of 3-7 year old kids. I was also told by Jennifer- "I was told by the lifeguards that you were the only people in the pool" and proceeded to start blaming us for the poop in the pool. I sent her several photos with dozens of other patrons (not with our party) in the pool. They refused to do anything and told us to take it up with the credit card company. do not give this place your money unless you want to support a discriminatory organization who doesn't stand behind the services they contract to provide. read more

The last three days I've gone (while capacity was still open--another issue), there's been a line wrapping around the corner because there weren't enough people to get customers inside in a timely fashion. I would occasionally use the free track when the weather was just too bad in the winter, and I would frequently stop by on long runs to use the water fountain and/or restroom right inside the building. In early January, when it was below 0 real temperature, I ventured up to the MCC for my run. This is when I learned that the track was only free if you were a member (aka not free) of if you lived in Carmel. There is no track only option for those that aren't residents of Carmel - you have to pay $11/day (it was $10 in January and is now $11 as of February '18) or $40+/month to be a member. I sucked it up and paid the $10/$11 twice to use the track, because there was no way I could get in a quality workout outside. I was not happy about this, but it was livable. The MCC is also undergoing renovations. You see, the MCC USED to have an entrance directly from the Monon. It would give you immediate access to a water fountain and access to a restroom about 100 feet into the building. Those doors are now closed and have a big sign that reads: NOT AN ENTRANCE. On really long runs in Indy in the Winter, there are very few options for water near the Monon. The Carmel bath houses (if you're comfortable drinking out of the sink), the Jordan YMCA, and the MCC (and Athletic Annex if they are open, but that's literally at the start/finish of the run). So if you start in Broad Ripple, you get 2 bath houses plus the Jordan and MCC on a 20 mile up and back. So, still needing water, I've been going around the front of the building, entering the MCC through the main door, and politely asking the desk staff if I could go in for a drink. I've done this 3 times over the last 3 weeks. The first 2 times yielded smiling faces and a 'Yes'. This last time, on 2/2/18, is why I must give 1 star and why I will never give them another dollar of my money. I walked into the MCC on an very cold day, 6.5 miles into my 18 mile run, having only had 1 drink of water so far because I skipped the Jordan YMCA. I politely asked if I could get a drink, and received this response: "I'll let you today, but the MCC is not for runners/walkers using the Monon. You must be a member to use the water fountain". So, there you have it. The Monon COMMUNITY Center is no longer for the community. Its for members only. Thus, it should be rebranded the Monon Athletic Club. You can keep your track MCC. If I have to pay to use it, I'll go to NIFS. read more

This Community Center is not a Community Center. It is not open to all, normally a prerequisite to being a Community Center. It is a private health club where you have to pay a fee. In Indianapolis you do not have to pay a fee to go inside a Community Center, join in a pick-up game of basketball, use the restrooms, watch a class to see if you like it, even take a free class, etc. And the classes that cost are all reasonably priced. In Carmel, you evidently have to pay a fee just to get past the front desk. It is not open to the community. They wouldn't even let me use their restroom. Their disabled parking spots are in the front, but the farthest from the front door. Go figure. Plus, there are not enough disabled parking spots. The rest of the regular parking spots were almost full too, only having free spots at the far end. If you are looking for your car, and you realize you've parked in the next row, there are no sidewalks or paths between rows to get you to the right row. There is a steep ravine filled with reeds and mud. If you're disabled and in pain after your walk, a path is a must. It's just a common courtesy for everyone, to make it easy to get to your car from one row over. Even Walmart has it easier to get from row to row in the parking lot than the Carmel Community Center.
