The Nat is truly one of the best swimming facilities in the entire country. I attended a swim meet as a spectator and I was very impressed with the seating area/bleachers at the Nat. The bleachers are elevated over the pool deck, giving every seat a clear view of the racing. The floor and chairs are clean, with no trash or stains strewn about. I preferred sitting the stadium seating in the first few rows, but the bleachers are also pretty comfortable. However, there is not a bad seat in the house, especially when your team is winning! The restrooms near the facility are clean and organized, and they were well-stocked with hygiene products. The concession stand is unreasonably expensive, but that is common at most sports facilities. It offers a wide selection of chips, candy, bottled drinks, and fountain drinks, as well as other snacks like soft pretzels, nachos, and hot dogs. Keep in mind that the concession stand only accepts card, not Apple Pay or cash. read more

The Nat as the pool is affectionately known as has been an iconic fixture in Indianapolis since 1982. The actual name of the IU Natatorium is rarely used. It was fully renovated in 2017 at a cost of 25 million and took almost two years. The facility is located on the campus of IUPUI. Most consider the aquatics facility as one of the most special indoor pools in the United States due to its history of high performance racing. The biggest accolades are 138 American records, 19 World records and 13 Olympic Trials. Parking is pay garage. The pool is often used on weekends for USA club competitions. However it's day to day use is faculty and students of IUPUI who maintains the facility. The Physical Education Department also has classes in the building. I had the honor to officiate a high level USA Swim meets over the past few years. The venue is marvelous in every way. The main 50 meter Olympic competition pool is like new. Spectator have hundreds of very good seating with awesome views. One of the more special items of The Nat are the names hand written on the wall. Can you believe that this wall was almost painted over during renovation. A highlight of the newly renovated pool is a new multi function digital scoreboard. One of the largest in the country. There is also a secondary 25 yard training pool that's utilized for warm up/cool down during competition. This pool had been shuttered for years and was brought back in the Summer of 2017 fully renovated. Other rooms have exercise equipment for students as the school does not have a team. I will have the opportunity to again officiate another high level meet in the Summer 2020. However more special for me is my son son's opportunity to compete in the historic IU Natatorium in 2020. read more

In case you're looking for a lifeguard gig that also comes with watching world famous swimmers, this is the place! I worked here while in grad school and usually only worked once a week, which they were fine with (management has changed since I was there, but I cannot imagine THAT much). There are so many guards that there are always shifts to pick up, and always someone to take your shifts. Very lowkey but fun way to spend your time, if you go to IUPUI and need a part time or even closer to full time job, this is a low stress one for sure. read more

I have been a student at IUPUI for over 3 years now and am still amazed every time I walked through the Nat. The pool is huge and the facility itself is huge. I have been to a few swim meets as well as timed events for championships so I have seen some of the times the place is packed and it really is an awesome experience. The locker rooms are clean and kept up to date as much as possible. The lifting room is simple but has the necessities. I haven't been to many olympic sized pools but I can tell this one stands out as one of the best! read more

It's the Natatorium. A World Class facility and that's how it's operated. Records have been broken here, you feel a little slower in this pool... ha! The membership packages are pretty affordable, plenty of lanes available after work and the water is a great temperature for hard swimming. They have a high dive platform and during the season the pool is in traditional long-course. The Nat isn't open on the weekends though, which is a bit of a bummer. If you're looking for a great place to train in the water: this is it! It is a privilege to swim at this facility. read more

I wish I was still in college so I could swim at the natatorium on the cheap. I love this place though. Plenty of lanes, pretty much every swimmer there for lap swim knows proper lane sharing etiquette, so it's a lot nicer than a city or club pool. It would be nice if they were open on the weekends, but I can forgive them since they have multiple pools. One thing: if you have the opportunity to swim in the practice pool instead of the competition pool during the winter, do it. The water is warmer since it's smaller and I really prefer that when it's cold outside. read more

This is a world class pool, but you don't need me to tell you that. Google will tell you that this pool facility routinely plays host to for-real-legit world class swimmers like Michael Phelps. The open swim is cheap, the lifeguards ULTRA professional, and the facilities are clean. I always feel comfortable doing my own thing and never worry about the children's swim class safety when I am in the lane next to them, which is sometimes a concern at less well ran pools. Maybe that's just the former lifeguard in me coming out, but I think it speaks a lot to the holistic nature of a pool that serves so many diverse and large crowd on any given day. When you walk into this natatorium you can feel the greatness. Olympians, olympic hopefuls, age group swimmers, infants: swimmers of all can be found here. The pool is 50 m in the summer and 25 yards jn the winter. It is also always fun I watch the divers and synchro swimmers, too! The natatorium has a great masters program for swimmers over 18 and 3 practices throughout the day. The locker rooms are the only part of this pool that is not world class. read more

I took the "stroke improvement lessons" here twice in preparation for a triathlon. Although it did improve my swimming ability it was more a result of the practice rather than the instruction. The instructors are students that seem to have little experience teaching adults. The drills that they have you do are helpful but I received little instruction on what I could specifically do to improve. I thought the Nat's classes were a good price until I found Westview Healthplex. I joined the Healthplex's "Master Swimming Course." I didn't have to become a member, it was only $40 for a month (much less than the Nat) and I received better instruction. If you want to improve your technique, the Healthplex is the place to go. The Natatorium may be great for kids, it's not the kind of instruction I was hoping for as an adult. read more

This is a cheap, easy place to get a workout if you are a student or staff at IUPUI. It's certainly NOT glamorous; walking around by the locker rooms sometimes makes me feel like their is a machete-wielding psychopath around the next dank corner. So I'm not much of a swimmer (yet!) but I really enjoy swimming at the Natatorium. Knowing that it has quite a bit of prestige and having heard about and even watched a few national-level races occur at this pool makes it even more fun to swim in. It's a great place to go work out in the winter - for non-IUPUI students, a little scannable card worth 15 swims (swims? is that right?) can be had for $55 - equal to about $3.75 per session, which is quite a deal if you swim somewhat regularly. The pro shop is full of good stuff at very reasonable prices, and it is rarely so crowded that you have to triple up on lanes to swim in. The water seems to be kept clean enough, and if you're lucky, you can stick around and watch the US national synchronized swim team practice! Wow! read more

Despite its age, it's still one of the top swimming venues in the country. Swimming lessons start for infants and the Indy Dolphins Swim Team is excellent. There is also diving and synchronized swimming. It is the complete aquatics package. read more

One of the best pools I have ever swam in! Olympians such as Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte have swam here, and honored to have been in the same pool as them. Viewing is great no matter where you sit, with a great concession stand if you get hungry. The water is a little cold, and by the end of the meet, your skin will feel dry and like it wants to feel off. But other then that, it's a very fast pool!! read more

I have swam a lap or two around this pool. IUPUI students who chose to pay their locker/recreation fee can have the pleasure of using this facility free of charge. The swim team takes up the pool on certain days at certain times for practice, but if you confer with the schedule first you can find plenty of free time to take a dip or two. The pool is set up for exercise use...nice big lanes for swimming....bring your googles if you are a crooked swimmer like me or you will be constantly bumping into the lane dividers. Facility includes a childrens level shallow pool for instructional use and offers many swimming classes for all ages, in addition to summer camps, diving classes in the diving pool and exercise classes....i.e. water aerobics. With your paid recreation fee you also receive use of a locker and access to towels so you do not have to bring your own. Locker rooms are clean and feel safe and secure. Plenty of outlets for hairdryers. Parking is easy and physically butted right up next to the natatorium so there is no need to walk outside with wet hair to find your car. Parking lot even offers visitor parking and the natorium has guest level admission prices as well. read more
