Monk's is awesome - for work on the interior and exterior of the house. Small/simple jobs and large/complex ones. This is a long review, but it should be worth the read. We have used Monk's numerous times in the past - they were willing to do small jobs like when I fell through my attic into the 2nd level (they did ceiling drywall and paint for just a few hundred dollars and the way they repaired and painted it there is literally no evidence to the eye now that an idiot like me fell through the 2nd floor ceiling to his waist). Anyway, this month was a particularly large job on the outside of the house, I worked with Kurt B at Monk's who was awesome. Kurt and the entire team were very responsive, very professional, very timely. Kurt had come out when convenient for me to do the estimate, once accepted he came back with the head carpenter (Raul) and head painter (Huibel) to see what materials were needed and go through things, and the carpenters came and did massive amount of work up on multiple dormers/eaves/windows to remove rotten boards and cut and install Azek aprons which look awesome now. Kurt gave excellent recommendations of how to repair and replace sections (like with the aprons along the roof against the dormers to stop moisture soaking up into and flaking the paint every couple years). My house is tall (3 stories in the back), complicated, the roof is steep, it's surrounded with boxwoods which they miraculously didn't damage at all, they handled it all, no problems. I had a lot of needs/rules that they gracefully accepted and handled perfectly: being careful with ladders on the front porch overhang with its waterproofed sealing, ie, being careful to not puncture it; as they were up painting the dormers they looked for and sealed for me where flying squirrels had been coming in; scraping and prepping the paint to help prevent future mildew (ie, not just slapping paint on). All sorts of stuff like that. They were happy to receive my coaching and concerns - never once did I get the vibe that I've gotten from carpet vendors and the like that I'm bothering them by asking them a question. They didn't charge me to look for or plug squirrel holes and complain, they just did it and happily. This stuff goes a long way in my mind - and it seems to be rare that a contractor/vendor doesn't have some kind of attitude or drama, there was absolutely none from Monk's, not once - they were 100% professional from start to finish. Again the whole project looks complete and good, I'm literally 100% satisfied - while they were here and doing the work they found rotten boards or bad paint sections that I hadn't noticed but they noticed while doing the work, they pointed it out to me, asked if I wanted to address it, they did it in stride and didn't charge me more, they just did it. And it looks awesome. From Kurt through Raul and Huibel, through the other carpenters and the painters I had the vibe the entire time that every one of them was just treating my house and its rot or paint issues like it was their house, truly - like they didn't do or charge me for work that didn't need it, they did what did need it, and they did that well and thoroughly. Clearly I can go on for a long time about this but the point is the place looks awesome, their pride is massive in how they treat my home like their own. Hesitant to have given this glowing review they deserve because I don't want them raising their prices for the next time I need work done but they deserve nothing but praise. Oh and if Covid is still around if you are looking for work done, Kurt and his guys showed up with masks for Covid and all of that which I didn't really care about, but rest assured if you are concerned with that stuff. Btw, the project took an exceptionally efficient 2 days for the carpentry work (the head carpenter and 2 guys under him) and 1 day after for the paint work (the head painter and 4 guys under him) - this was done exceptionally quickly and I'm talking painting 9 dormers, adding Azek aprons and pieces up on dormers and in front of windows all over the place, removing and painting behind downspouts, multiple walls - it was a massive project, to get it all done in 3 days was incredible - the guys were all working really hard. And it looks REALLY nice. Use Monk's. Just, seriously, use them. (No I wasn't compensated for this review, exceptional work just deserves acknowledgment). read more

We chose Monk's for a complete renovation of our 1200 SF condo. We were nervous undertaking a project like this for the first time, but our experience with Monk's was fantastic from start to finish and has continued to be great post-construction. We chose Monk's based on great recommendations from family friends who had used them for large-scale projects in the past. They are able to provide complete service from design, material procurement, and project management in an extremely seamless manner, which was one of the main reasons for our decision. Our experience started with Casey who was our design consultant at the Monk's showroom. Casey was fantastic, a pleasure to work with, and designed us a beautiful kitchen. Her recommendations for styles and products went a long way. Peter and Robert assisted us with picking out the perfect laminate floor for our redesign. They were extremely knowledgeable about all of the product choices and ultimately helped us get the best price for the floor we wanted. We had a tight timeframe to get our project done in under 4 weeks. Once our materials hit the warehouse the project was completed within 3.5 weeks. Project management couldn't have been better. Our project manager was Joey and our foreman was David. Both were outstanding and extremely professional. They made themselves available daily to discuss any concerns or questions we had regarding the status of the work. They took care of everything including working with our HOA, neighbors, and township to ensure everything went smoothly. Even during Joey's vacation time, Monk's assigned Garrett to step-in as project manager. Garrett was fantastic and the project continued very efficiently during Joey's absence. Their crews and sub-contractors were always on time, professional, and clean. Monk's uses ARS Electric Design for a lot of their electrical contracting. Alex, the owner, and his team were fantastic. They came out before the project to install an upgraded electrical panel and ran circuits to ensure everything was ready once Monk's started work. They even worked closely with us post-construction to ensure some small upgrades were made per request of the town inspector. I would use Alex and his team any time. I would recommend Monk's to anyone for any large or small home project. Their team is extremely experienced and they produce quality work that they stand behind. This is a review based on not one, but three projects that I assigned to Monk's Home Improvements. Monk painted the outside of my house and changed not merely the color, but the entire look of the exterior. They repaired/replaced shingles, tightened gutters, caulked seams, power-washed and more, and in doing so, transformed the appearance of the façade to such a degree that neighbors complimented the work and passerby's asked the Monk team for their business card. After seeing what a great job they did on the outside, I asked Monk to refinish the interior hardwood floors on the first floor. I thought the floors might be beyond repair and seriously contemplated having them replaced. To say they had seen better days is an understatement as they were covered in dents, dings, cracks and chips. It looked like a troupe of Flamenco tap dancers lived here. I knew this would be a challenge and Monk went through a multi-step process that involved repairing, sanding, staining and varnishing the hardwood. The finished results are SPECTACULAR! If I didn't know any better, I'd think the floors were brand new. Their next assignment: paint the living room walls and ceiling and replace the trim. The walls and ceiling had aged badly. With the foundation settling, seams in the drywall became visible, nails popped up, and the ceiling looked uneven and wavy. Here too, I thought about replacing the ceiling. Could Monk repair the uneven ceiling, as well as the creases, seams and other damage to the walls? Monk didn't just put a coat or two of paint on the surfaces. They spent substantial time prepping both areas before applying fresh coats of paint, which is precisely what experts recommend to get a superior outcome. Describing the multiple steps they went through in the prepping phase and the specialty products they used to achieve their results is less revealing than witnessing the completed job for yourself. If it is true that a picture is worth a thousand words, then these photos create a narrative of just how much appeal and comfort specialists in home improvement like Monk's can create for their clients. I hired Monk's to paint the interior of my house. To keep things simple, here are the problems I experienced: 1. They didn't paint items above your eye level (i.e. you needed a ladder to see) such as the tops of the doors and the upper trims of the windows 2. They didn't paint items below your eye level (i.e. you needed to crouch down to see) such as the bottoms of the doors and the lower trims of the windows 3. They painted on hardware such as strike plates, doorknobs, window handles, hinges, sliding doors' upper/lower tracks, and more. It's nearly impossible to get the paint off the window handles, so ultimately, I'll have to purchase replacements. 4. There's overspray on windows, glass, pipes, wires, etc. 5. There's a lot of drips and uneven painting throughout the house I did a warranty claim, and the owner told me that they could fix everything in 3 days. They didn't. They came the following week for 2 days and the painters told me they finished. They didn't. Honestly, I think the crux of the issue is their business model. You might deal with a somewhat reasonable estimator such as Jon Clauson, but ultimately, he's not managing the project. It seemed no one was really managing the project and ensuring quality. Monk's seems to be a volume business and subcontracts the work out to people who aren't full-time employees, so it's not surprising they might not care about the end result. They certainly aren't accountable for the end result. I believe there are 3 ways you hear about a home improvement contractor: referrals, advertisements, or a hybrid of both. I'd go with referrals where you've seen their work at a friend's or family's place. Also, obtain multiple bids and contact 2 references for the one you choose who vouch solidly for them. My wife and I put off remodeling the kitchen for years partly because we didn't want to deal with the inconvenience of living without a kitchen for a long period and partly because we couldn't find a contractor that we were confident with. We had heard so many horror stories from friends and neighbors about long delays and inferior work. That all changed when we went to Monks' Design Center in Morristown and met Design consultant Marien Ronan. She came out to our house several times and created a few different floor plans. Marien helped us pick tile and cabinets, light fixtures, paint colors, and gave suggestions on appliances. She was always available whenever we needed her and was never upset with all the changes we made to the original plan. Project Manager, Bill Buckner, and his staff were equally as tremendous. Bill provided me with a plan and timetable and kept to it. They actually finished the project a day or two early. All of the craftsmen that did work in the house, whether they were painters, or floor tile installers, electricians, plumbers, demolition, were professional and personable. All the work was done with as little mess and inconvenience to us as possible. Whatever issues we may have had, they were few and minor, were immediately resolved. Every bit of their work met or excided our expectations. I not only would use Monks again but plan on doing so in the very near future. Can you say TOTAL TRANSFORMATION !!! The Monk's team led by Bill did an outstanding job renovating our kitchen and back entry way. The team was courteous, professional and communicated regularly with us. This was the first time we did anything at this scale (a complete gutting and rebuild of the kitchen) and the Monk's team answered all my many questions and helped set my mind at ease. They were very clear on what could be done and provided great recommendations and guidance (These cabinet, fixture, backsplash and wall colors should work well together. Update the lighting. Don't go for a super powerful range hood - it would be overkill and would require make up air (a new term for me) and additional cost). Starting from the initial review meeting and estimates, meeting with the design consultant, signing off on the contract, and ultimate the execution of the project, the Monk's team did a fantastic job. Though we ended up purchasing most of the materials from other vendors, the Monk's installation team was quick yet did a wonderful job with the flooring, a new wall, cabinets, painting, plumbing, backsplash, lighting, electrical, repairing the window area, venting range hood to the outside, and removal and reattachment of appliances. It came together beautifully and we absolutely love the end result. Thank you Monk's. read more

I used Monk to have the exterior of my home repainted. Jason Solomon was my project manager. The entire experience with the teal at Monk's was top notch; from communication, punctuality, professionalism and dedication to customer satisfaction, they are hands down the best construction company I have ever dealt with. Jason showed up for the first meeting on time and was armed with a wealth of knowledge. He really listened to what I wanted... I mean really listened. So often I. The past, I'd get a proposal and s the scope of work was completely off... wasting time. My initial proposal was perfect.. no need for editing. The team arrived as scheduled and worked full days. At the end of each workday, the work area was completely cleaned. They finished the job and stayed on schedule the entire time. The workers were all professional. At one point there was a mistake (caused by me) and the team immediately addressed and corrected the issue. I would highly recommend them to anyone! In fact, I will be using them again for an addition project. They have a Beautiul showroom with designers (I met with Zoriana and she was a delight.). After spending 7 months researching and getting quotes to paint the exterior of our house (including windows and doors), we decided to go with Monk's because their pricing was fair and a number of our neighbors have used them without issue. I can honestly say that this was probably the best experience we've ever had with any contractor/painter/skilled tradesman. George Day was our project manager and was extremely responsive. Carlos and his crew did an absolutely amazing job priming and painting the house/windows/sliders. It honestly looks like a brand new house, and I couldn't find a single thing to nitpick about when we did the final walkaround! They also cleaned up everything as they went and left the property exactly as they found it. They were also extremely flexible. For example, we decided mid-project to change the color we wanted the garage doors painted. We told Carlos and he said "no problem" and made it happen! I will end this review by saying what I said to Carlos as he left our house after his crew finished, which was "we'll see you for our next project". We were that impressed. I'm so happy that, after meeting with several home improvement companies, I chose Monk's to paint my home's exterior. Monk's estimator, Angelo Santoro, did a thorough assessment of my home's exterior before presenting me with a detailed work proposal. I was well informed as to all the necessary prep work, the applications/type of paint, the total cost & schedule of payments. Angelo was pleasant, professional & arranged for a color consult with Sherwin Williams. This was greatly appreciated as I wanted to choose new colors for my home with confidence. The project started on the date promised. The job foreman, Ron, was a delight to work with. He kept me in the loop on work activities. I was impressed most by his attention to detail. Ron arrived promptly each morning with several workers who were knowledgeable, polite, pleasant & hard-working. At the end of each day, all their equipment was neatly stowed out of sight. Three weeks later, my large Georgian Colonial never looked as good. I highly recommend Monk's to anyone in need of painting services. We used Monk's for our bathroom renovations. We had 2 full bath's. They made the process smooth and easy. Yes, it is a tad bit pricey but you get your monies worth. We had peace of mind knowing we had a Project Manager and a Foreman on the job daily, people to coordinate EVERYTHING, start to finish. They made it stress free for us. The process of planning, ordering, organizing etc. was a breeze with them. As for trades used and quality of work, and end product, we could not be happier. Everyone was focused, no delays, actually they finished a bit early. Quality is spectacular and I LOVE that if something goes of track after they are complete, I can still call the Project manager assigned and get help. That is a MAJOR plus. We had one tiny issue with the plastic seal to our glass shower door like 2-3 months after work completion and it was a breeze, worry free, reaching out to Joe (Our PM). Loved that they insist we are to call them anytime if needed. So, bottom line is Planning, process, trades, quality, end product, after care etc, all worth it and we will 100% be using Monks again for future work we have planned. read more

We had an overall excellent experience with Monk's, especially working with Jason S. (Estimator and Project Mgr), and Mike D. (Design and Flooring selection). Monk's was professional and diligent in their work, as well as in their clean up and care for the property. The project involved finishing the previously sparely completed interior of second floor bedrooms, including carpentry, LVT flooring, and painting. Monk's also created new closet space. From start to finish the Monk's team was timely in their daily work visits, and communicated well throughout the process. Their work was very well executed and of high quality. The rooms have some challenging angles and tight spaces too. We are very happy with the finished product. The transformation of the rooms and closet space is amazing, and the appearance is beautiful. We are very impressed with Jason S., who oversaw the entire process, met challenges head-on, and communicated well throughout, and also with Mike D. who was very helpful and patient with us on the flooring options and final selection. Wow! I have never seen a team like this. We just bought a 100 year old 4500 square foot home in West Orange that was badly neglected for too long. Monk's home improvement came in and turned my home into a candidate for Architectural Digest! They fixed falling ceilings and walls, doors and molding throughout. They sanded and prepped then used top of the line Sherwin Williams paint. They sent in a colorist specialist to help me pick colors. But the best part of the whole project was the estimator, Dane Williams. Dane acted as a GC handling everything that came up and keeping me informed throughout the project (4 weeks!). Their team leader for the painters, Gustavo Lopez, led his team with precision and ensured that the quality of the work was top notch. He did not hesitate to redo something if it was not up to standard. I have never written a review like this before, and am thrilled to do so knowing that quality workmanship, accountability, and fairness in pricing still exist. The owners are very involved in ensuring quality is tops. Will definitely call Dane again and use Monk's for more than my painting needs! read more

If you are a perfectionist and demand the best in yourself and others, you need look no further than this incredible company. From start to finish, there is no detail left unattended. My project was far from the easiest because I did not want to replace my cabinets. Several people on the Monk's team said that I would have been crazy to do so. There were other limitations within which whoever undertook the job would have to work as well. Most contractors will not touch a project unless they can gut the entire space and start from scratch. From the beginning, Monk's was willing to treat me as a contributing member of the team. I am a very hands on person and always love learning from each trade that contributes to the final project. From Maria who does the initial interview and measuring to Greg, who comes up with numbers to the penny to sell the job, to Garrett, my project manager to the counter templaters, installers, Monk designers, and consultants, there is nothing and no one I would have changed. My kitchen has been given new life, and I am ecstatic every time I look at the results. read more

We just recently completed a large project and are very happy with the results. We worked with Jon Clauson and from the beginning he was great. Always had an open line of communication, was always on time, very professional and patient with us no matter how big or small our concern. I had an idea in my head of all the things I wanted done, and I was kind of all over the map. But Jon and his team worked with my vision and got it all done right on schedule and on budget too! Lazaro and his team did an amazing job with all the carpentry work- from my custom built-in entertainment center, to building a pantry, installing new floors and doors and even constructing a built-in storage hall closet from scratch. He worked with us to take my ideas and make them a reality. Alberto and his team then came in for the painting. Again always right on time and I'm very happy with how it all came out- especially his attention to detail and making sure even the littlest touch ups were done. After having an outstanding experience with Monk's on an exterior paint job, called Rich Ressa about a full bathroom renovation. Rich and Greg Kihm, got a thorough understanding of our needs and provided an estimate on the spot. Monk's place a premium on customer communication, and an effective, open channel was established from Day One. The job was turned over to Eric Alvarez to manage. Eric provided a complete understanding of each phase of the project, was always present at critical junctures, and answered questions on a timely basis. The construction team led by Cristian Guzman was punctual, professional, easy to deal with, and went to great lengths to minimize disruption of the household. The job was finished ahead of schedule. We could not be happier with the results. While the individual components of the bathroom are simple, in execution and combination they are stunning. The Monk's team takes great pride in craftsmanship and we are still amazed by the product months later. Monk's is out first choice for home improvement and we cannot recommend them highly enough. read more

I couldn't be happier with Monk's and Ward Malnuk! Whenever I need something, I call Ward, and if Monk's doesn't do it, he suggests someone who will. We purchased our house at the end of 2021, and Ward gave us a complete and competitive bid to paint both the inside and exterior of our house--and nothing had been done to it for at least 15 years. Gustavo was a real pro and gave us useful information about painting the outside, especially on the south side of the house where we get the most sun, and he and his guys were so pleased with the way it turned out that they took their own pictures of the finished work! On the inside, Randal stood in for Gustavo, and made the packing away of materials, sweeping, prep and painting easy, and even put things back in the various rooms. And later, Monk's replaced our sliding glass door and back storm door in time for winter. I can't speak highly enough about Monk's, Ward, Gustavo and the crew. Things were left clean and tidy, and they were so pleasant that I missed them once they were gone. I will be calling them again! read more
