THE BEST place in town! The food before they had to close for a bit was bomb and right now they're currently doing food trucks and their selection is also bomb! Yet another hidden gem in this area of town. Parking / Locatjon / Interior The location is in the Northside Village area around a few other eateries and markets. There is a parking lot, but it is t in the best of shape. That said, it beats having to park and walk to get to it. This place knows it's mixology. There is plenty of beer and wine as well. We tried the huevos rancheros pizza, fried chicken sandwich, and elote. The elote was pretty traditional and definitely the highlight. The fried chicken sandwich was great, but very unassuming in presentation. The pizza while good, honestly we did not taste any huevos in it. Cost Drinks run about one would expect in Houston or proper downtown. $10-$13 each. Beer runs $4-$7 dependent on what one chooses. Food is reasonably priced for what one receives. Service We visited late afternoon around 2-3 pm and service was quick the entire time. To get straight to the point, this was a pretty disappointing experience at Monkey's Tail. I visited on Sunday for brunch with friends and I was not impressed with anything at this restaurant. In fact, numerous things went wrong including our order coming out incorrectly (they entered the tacos I ordered incorrectly), the mimosa craft we ordered was more orange juice than it was champagne and the service was for lack of better words, terrible. Food: The queso and the fries were the only thing that tasted good. Get basic stuff if you come here because there is a lack of knowledge on how to properly make anything else. Our tacos were soggy and disgusting, on top of the wrong food coming out originally. Service: The staff has favorites and you can tell while you wait for service. Super unfamiliar with their own menu and simply off putting to say the least. Atmosphere: The vibe is fun, it is definitely a lost opportunity for an amazing brunch setting considering the food and service were so bad. Everything is comfortable where you don't feel like you're sitting on a chair that has been sat on thirty thousand times before nor like you need to worry about whether the crowd is judging for wearing the wrong type of shoes. Monkey's Tail opened up this Summer in Lindale Park (North tip of 610) and I finally got around to checking things out the other week. I've heard great things from friends and was not disappointed when we sat down and started ordering. The interior is casual and varies from open sitting areas with lounge chairs, bar top & stools, a handful of low tables, outdoor patio tables overlooking the light rail in front of the building, to a pool table area with high tables in the back. Plenty of room for whatever size group you came with. Decor is a mix between Mexican tile work and mid-century modern accents shaping things into a very hip space where you feel comfortable dressed up or down. Music covered a broad range, but as the night progressed they settled into mainly a latinx playlist which had people dancing and nodding heads along with the beats. There appears to be a drink for just about everyone. They have about 20 drinks on tap including 15 draft beers, an ale, and four signature cocktails all ready to pour. If you're balling on a budget, they have you covered with a good selection of cheap beers such as $2 Miller High Life bottles, $3 Tecate Lite and Lone Star tall-boys, and $4 Coors Banquet and Shiners. If you're a mixology or straight spirits man, they thought of you as well and offer a massive bar of bottles and have multiple inventive cocktails listed on the menu. Service was tip top and really friendly. We had zero problem getting drinks even when things got packed. They have food and I hear it's great, but I didn't touch it. I got nothing. Overall what I like about Monkey's Tail is that although this bar is modeled as the new hip spot, they seem to have successfully gentrified without exclusion. The menu covers a broad spectrum of pricing that keeps their doors open to the local neighbors, and not just the hipsters who bought the new build town homes popping up all over. The crowd at night is a testament to that and it all seems very Houston to me. I found this place through Yelp and seeing all of the great reviews and fun drinks made me move it to the top of my list of places to try. I loved the menu here - they have a wide variety of bar snacks and cocktails to keep the evening going. My favorite drink was the pouch drink - it is so addicting and easy to sip that it sneaks up on you! We also got their build your own pizza for $11, which is GIANT and a great deal, so I definitely recommend it. The service here was spectacular. My only complaint is the smoking on the patio - I know this is allowed, but a lot of it was happening at the open garage doors that separate the patio from the inside, so people were basically smoking inside. I'd like to see more attention given to keeping the smoking area separate from the inside space. I ended up smelling like a cigar by the end of the night. As parts of Houston slowly being gentrified, the demand for craft cocktail chill spot are there and Monkey's Tail supplied to that demand. Monkey's Tail has been only opened for about 4 weeks (at the time of this review) and it's already getting regulars of all ages and races in this predominately Mexican neighborhood. The entrance may look inconspicuous but the interior definitely will give you a different vibe. Inside certainly reminds me of both Johnny's Gold Brick and The Flat, the clean dive-y look of a bar and lounge combined with slightly dimmed lighting for an more intimate feel. There's a pool table along with cigarette dispenser for those who need a smoke out on the patio. The bar is well stocked with even more spirits hidden behind the front row of bottles. Monkey's Tail have frozen cocktail, draft cocktail, original concoction they came up with, beer, wine, and of course non-alcoholic drinks too. Now the food menu looks promising because my friends and I ate beforehand but we did get the chips and queso and the queso is definitely delicious. They also do break-even bottle, meaning Monkey's Tail will pretty much sell the bottle at cost so you can try a pour of rare spirit they are doing without paying a premium for the pour. The service there is top notch as Leslie took care of me and my friends well. Especially when I ordered No... Pos Ta Cabron, an usually pre-made cocktail that's served in the pouch (as seen in many pictures on here) but they were out, so Leslie personally made one for me. Obviously the fresh one tasted good, and I hope if I come back and get one pre-made, it will just be as good. The other drink I got is 3 Milks, their version of boozy 'tres leches' cake. It's also served in a mini glass milk bottle and it's like a drinking boozy dessert. A friend of mine got the How Do You Like Them Apples? - one of the draft cocktail, and the nitro in it really helps to bring out the apple spiced cider flavor. The music isn't loud and great mix of Spanish and English songs, I didn't get a chance to play the pool table there but given how new the place is, I think the table should still be in good shape. Pizza was so good we all enjoyed it. Corn we asked for them to cut it instead of having it on the cob, really nice they did that for us had good flavor. Wings had the right amount of sauce and you do have option for extra sauce. My friends enjoyed the queso I didn't get to try it since I was so full off everything else. Only down side was the shrimp cocktail my friend mentioned she wished it had more shrimp she hardly had any. Drinks were great I had to do Virgin drink and it was still very tasty. This is a great place to go to watch sports with a large group of friends, and for Christmas they are SO decked out and festive! The food is delish; my friends loved their tacos (which were STUFFED, so one or two might fill you up), and I enjoyed the menudo! The waitstaff is very nice and a tentative, it's very spacious, they have tons of seating, they have chairs, sofas, and tables. So pick your place to chill and enjoy. Parking can be tricky. As they get packed pretty quickly. The atmosphere is super laid-back and super chill. A real laid-back dive bar type of scene. You can bring your dog if you would like.
