I have ordered takeout from Monkey Sushi Rosedale a handful of times and the food has been consistently good. I discovered them on Skip the Dishes for their $10 lunch specials. You can choose 2 items from a set list of rolls, nigiri sushi and/or sashimi, and it comes with miso soup and salad. I have also added a few items to my orders such as agedashi tofu, edamame, and shrimp tempura. They are very quick, food is very good and the prices are very reasonable. I know it's kind of a minor thing, but I think their miso soup is really delicious. Some places don't seem to care about the soup and it's often "meh", but I look forward to this one. Wow I am so disappointed at the food I ordered from Monkey Sushi specifically this location. I can't recall which location I ordered from the first time but loved it so much the first time and thought it was a good value for the price and amount you get. I ordered sashimi set, cucumber roll sushi and a few other rolls. The sashimi cuts were paper thin for all of them except for the salmon pieces. They were really disappointing. The cucumber sushi roll was soggy, loosely wrapped and mostly imitation crab and the salmon that was in it was barely noticeable. The spicy salmon or tuna I got was okay. I will definitely never order from this location again as it was not worth paying the fees and delivery from ubereats. I will try out the other locations that higher ratings next time. read more

This is a place that creates deals to attract customers. And it's still not value for money ! There are only a billion sushi places in Toronto and on a budget you can go to 50% of them. Located on the south side of Bloor Street between Brunswick & Borden Streets the place always has a lot of delivery guys on bikes hanging out in front of it so we were curious to see if the sushi was any good. Entering through a solid wood door (which is odd on Bloor Street), the sushi bar was at the front of the restaurant with the kitchen located in the back. A few booths sat on the eastern wall with even fewer tables set in the middle of the restaurant. While the place had a couple of murals on the walls, one still had the name of the restaurant's previous incarnation, New Generation Sushi. While the place had kind of a rundown feel, with lots of boxes piled in front of the kitchen, it had an extensive sushi menu at reasonable prices. We opted for a couple of their lunch menu items, I had a tuna roll & a black dragon roll, while my friend had one of their makimono sets. The service was quick & polite if not always attentive & while there was lots of food we found the place was focused on quantity rather than quality. There was nothing wrong with the flavour of the food, but the tuna was chopped rather than whole & the sushi rolls were heavy on the rice, like a lot of other sushi places on Bloor Street. However, after we finished we both found ourselves feeling bloated, suggesting that they used MSG in the food, making us both uncomfortable for about an hour after eating. They are an AYCE restaurant chain in the first place, so don't go in with incredibly high expectations. However, it's good if you want some well-priced sushi and combos. My one complaint was that they seem to prioritize food app orders compared to phone in orders. I'd get my food within 30 minutes for UberEats or Fantuan delivery, but it took about 1 hour for pick-up (when I called directly). So these days, I use apps to pre-order for convenience. Okay so I uber eats this to my place cuz they run some insane deals on Fantuan. Practically giving the fish away. I heard this place is a buffet and is buffet quality. Normally Kibo sushi and other takeout spots don't really give me enough. Boy was I wrong. Monkey delivers huge pieces, thick cuts. After one box I was like okay I'm not gonna be able to finish the other one that's going in the fridge for late night munchies. Literally got 2 full meals out of that. Fish quality was actually pretty good and I'm pretty picky when it comes to sushi. I'm giving this 5 stars cuz the price to quality ratio is high. This place has been written up on blogto for having THE MOST amount of healthcode infractions but here's one thing I'll say. Support your mom and pop shops. Don't listen to the haters. I'm not a paid reviewer I'm just a random dude who's eaten at a tonne of Chinese restaurants with some questionable bathrooms and know sometimes the best bang for your buck restaurants are in the hood. I've never been to their location before but if BlogTO is putting you on blast with the Ontario food safety commtitee that's probably pretty bad but hopefully they've improved. This is one of the best sushi places I have ever been to! The prices are not super cheap, but absolutely worth the high quality of whatever food you order here. I ordered some California rolls with my friend when I came here, as well as a beef teriyaki bento box. It was so delicious. The beef was very tender, juicy and flavourful. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite I had, and wish I could have kept eating it when I finished the meal. The service here is excellent. Friendly, courteous and efficient. The food also comes out quickly which is a good thing, especially if you are in a hurry. The ambiance inside is also very quiet, perfect for if you especially want a break from the hustle and bustle of Yorkville. I'll definitely be back here the next time I'm in the area. Came in the afternoon for their early bird ayce offer. They were running a promotion where you can get the premium options without extra cost, and at the time of writing, it is still available. Seats are nice. Large tables. They offer a tablet order system and feature over 70 different items on the full menu. One issue is you need to swipe right in each category to see more items but there isn't really any indication that there are more items to the right so you might miss out. Just remember to keep swiping. The restaurant was mostly empty at 3 pm, but closer to 6 people started streaming in, so it might affect the quality of the food. The amount of food that came was precise. If we wanted 6 pieces of mackerel sashimi, we got 6 pieces. Two pieces of karaage? There were two. In addition, all of the items came as well, which is pretty nice. One thing I particularly enjoyed was the deep fried options. The meats were all tender and juicy, batter was light and crispy, and everything came out hot. I mean, that should be a given, but so many other places would have dry chicken or stale tempura. Mackerel is always good for me, and they offer both raw and grilles options! Overall a nice ayce option and one of the more affordable options for dinner. People on here rating this place like they trained under the master sushi chefs of Japan and accept only world class sushi made the finest of ocean fresh fish and in-house grown seaweed and rice... It's AYCE for 20 bucks (have to be seated before 6 PM), how can you complain. I think it's only a couple bucks more past 6 PM -- still cheaper than most in the city. The rolls are more than good enough such that you are motivated to eat until you want to die. I love that the rolls and sashimi have a decent size and substance to them, it means you get more out of each order instead of having to order and wait more. Nothing is worse than ordering some rolls at AYCE and when the order finally comes you are wondering if you somehow astral projected to Munchkinland. If you find it too large that's fair -- allow me to introduce the concept of not shoveling an entire unit into your mouth if it's uncomfortable, and taking bites as you can manage. The sides and other options are good too, great variety for a cheaper AYCE location. Been here around 5-6 times, never really disappointed. Once or twice our food took a little long to come out, but not outside of the normal delay that the AYCE format can be plagued by. If you are looking for a good AYCE option and are in the area, consider trying it out for yourself, don't listen to strangers on the internet. read more

I don't understand why their salmon sashimi is so pale in comparison to other Japanese restaurants. The unagi and torched sushi were ok, but I was pretty disappointed in everything else . Shrimp tempura, enoki wrapped in beef, salmon teriyaki. It was just one thing after another . My high school friend and I only ordered one round of food , and we gave up on ordering. It seemed like there was something a little bit gross about everything we ate. The sashimi was cut much too large and thick, so it was unpleasant to eat. The shortribs were closer to wet bread than grilled meat. Everything was too small or too big. Slivers of tonkatsu versus rolls you couldn't fit in one mouthful. The rolls and the Aburi sushi were ABSOLUTELY DRENCHED in sauce, leaving us scraping it off. The music was too loud as well, and they were completely slammed with takeout orders, leaving us completely unattended despite the relatively low number of patrons, and creating a completely frenzied atmosphere. I'm impressed and pleasantly surprised. I thought I was taking a bit of a chance trying this 'new' place out - but it was great. A SUPER deal for equal to the best sushi I've had - anywhere else. I first thought Monkey Sushi was a stupid name for a sushi place, so I kinda ignored it the first few times I walked by. My mistake. And it's a little confusing, trying to figure out what is going on with this place - because it is in the same location as the south side of the street New Generation Sushi, and I don't really see much change inside the restaurant, except the staff I knew moved across the street to the north side of Bloor location of New Generation Sushi. There is new staff and new owners and a new chef. (And I kinda prefer there now being only one New Generation Sushi, because when they had two locations, across the street from each other - and one was closed Sunday and one was closed Monday - I couldn't figure out which was which when I was looking at them online.) So anyways, I stopped in for AYCE on Sunday Oct 6 (my birthday - it turns out). What a pleasant surprise. The food was equal to the best sushi I've had - and the price was a SUPER deal. I don't know how long this 'introductory special' deal will be offered - and don't hold them to this discount, but they have a 3 tier AYCE selection - Regular, Premium and Holiday - and - of course, some of the best stuff that I absolutely want - is in their 'Holiday' part of the AYCE section of the menu - where you pay the higher price. Now - of course - I'm accustomed to many AYCE places having their low daytime rates (with some of the best items not available at that cheap price) - and most AYCE sushi places charge more on Fri, Sat Sunday - but offer the better 'expensive' items - if you pay more. But Monkey Sushi seems to have 3 levels of pricing and items to choose from: Standard, Premium and Holiday - for $20, $25 and $27 - and even the $27 is a decent price for great food. Now I might have hesitated to pay the 'Holiday' rate - which I believe they charge on weekends - but don't hesitate to pay this. It's worth it. But - even better - they've got an amazing deal on at the moment! If you visit before 6pm, you get their entire menu selection of AYCE (including their Premium and Holiday rate) for only $19.99! This deal is SO AMAZING that I actually changed my plans today. (I was planning on picking up a large supply of the great (lamb and pork) skewers from Vietnam Lovely Noodle just across the street to take home and keep in the fridge and reheat for a few days - but I realized that if I fill up on that - I'll be too full to visit Monkey again several times this week! So I hope I don't sound like a paid review (somebody please pay me something for my reviews! please - no payment received yet, sadly) - but I'm a frequent visitor to New Generation, Sakura, Japan Sushi (all good), and Ajai sushi - and a few other awful sushi experiences - so I can say that Monkey is for sure equal to the better sushi places. And before 6pm (maybe for a limited time - a GREAT deal).
