Egg & Cheese on an English Muffin!
Angelo C.

If you're looking for 'monkey business' and low grade bitter coffee, go to Starbucks; however, if you want excellent brew along with delectable pastries and sandwiches then you'll find it here! I was in Lorain for a four day training class and needed a morning boost. A quick internet search lead me here and much to my surprise it wasn't packed with patrons. Upon walking in I was promptly greeted with a smile by a wonderful young lady. They sell a variety of coffee, tea, smoothies, and pastries. After pondering for a few minutes, I decided on a mocha with almond milk and an egg & cheese sandwich on an English muffin. The mocha was terrific and was made using high quality chocolate syrup. Moreover, the egg sandwich was a warm and toasty intro to a good morning. I would highly recommend this locally owned coffee shop.

What a cool place I've been meaning to write about for a long while. Monkey Island is located inside The Shipyards in Lorain, a new event center on Lake Erie. The Shipyards also houses a cocktail lounge, restaurant and an event rental space. Its huge, cool, and unexpected for Lorain. The drive there will deceive you a little bit...but just believe. This area is brand new, built up and working hard to revitalize Lorain. The interior is very fun. Located in the back is a cute little swing against a painted background. You'll find monkeys everywhere - little figurines, on mugs and little trinkets in random spaces (but not in an obnoxious way). They have a fun random wall of mismatched coffee mugs. There's only a handful of tables, including bars with stools, so be forewarned in case you seek a spot to sit for a while with lumbar support. They have more traditional chairs and tables in the Shipyards common area right outside, but you wouldn't be able to see the lake and adjacent marina in the same way. The Monkey Island coffee boats all your standard drinks of coffees and teas. I had a Chai Tea Latte (not really a coffee drinker) and a lovely chat with the manager, Lynn. The menu has a few speciality drinks which looked super fun, including the Curious George (banana, chocolate, espresso, whipped cream). In the middle of the day, I was the only person there (this was a while ago). However, once COVID is safer, I would certainly come out of my way to come back here. I love all the vibes and everything happening at The Shipyards!
