It's 4pm on a Wednesday. I'm starting to write this review as we sit waiting for our happy hour starters- onion rings and chips and salsa. It's been about 25-30 minutes since we placed the order. It is not busy, about 4 occupied tables. How on earth does it take more than 20 minutes to get chips and salsa or onion rings. I'm going to pause here and finish when things arrive. The food has arrived. All of it, at once. Starters and mains. Which was weird but whatever. Onion rings: Hot, crispy, overall good. Chips and salsa: the salsa is spicy and robust, the chips are thick and crunchy. I don't know if they make the chips in house but they looked burnt. Chicken salad sandwich: good ratio of chicken salad to bread (sourdough) and the soup of the day (broccoli cheddar was good). But, is it worth $20? It's literally like two ladles of soup and some chicken on bread. Fish and chips: Came out hot, fries are average, the fish was well breaded not too much or too little, but could have been a bit crunchier. Overall it's a fine option, but $32 for what was honestly a very basic fish and chips seems off. I have always been more than happy to pay more for higher quality eating and or service. Monica's seems like it wants to be a nice restaurant with quality food, but falls short. If you are trapped in downtown Antioch and have money to spend, it's a fine option. Terrible experience this past weekend. Took more than 30 minutes for coffee and soft drinks to arrive. We were a party of six and immediately the server told us gratuity would automatically be included in our bill. I suppose this lets the server off the hook. They get a tip regardless of service and attentiveness. I mean, that's terrible. Prices were astronomical, too. I ordered the bacon waffle. It's a waffle with bacon cooked in to it. $23! I was in the area today and I needed breakfast. I found Monica's Riverview and it sounded pretty cool. Considering it was an Antioch I wasn't expecting too much, but I when I walked in I was pleasantly surprised. This place is actually really nice inside and it is actually on the water. The building like I said is on a wharf and it is a perfect location to have a meal on a sunny day. The dining area is nicely decorated it looks pretty modern, they have a full bar and there is outside eating in the shade. I walked in and was greeted by the hostess and immediately sat down. I sat there for about 2 to 3 minutes, and the waiter came over, I gave him my coffee and Chilaquiles's order. It was crazy, but my food showed up before my coffee, they do not play around here. My Chilaquiles were pretty good, but it could've been a little better. It could've came with beans, pico de gallo and maybe a little bit more chorizo. I was left with half a plate of Chilaquiles's and no chorizo halfway through. If they would fix that, the meal would've been perfect. It started off with not really any drink options and quite a few menu options were not available two hours before close. They brought out the wrong food for my husband and my food tasted off. The hostess, another sweet staff member, was kind and worked to ensure our group was seated just right for our late late lunch/early dinner. We chose this restaurant because of the outdoor seating option, which would have been perfect for our two year old who does much better sitting outside than inside. Plus the view of the water looked beautiful! Upon arrival (11 am) we were informed that the patio wouldn't be open until more waitresses arrived. We asked when that would be because we were willing to wait, and they said they weren't sure, or could be 11:30 or 12. Not wanting to wait an hour, we chose indoor seating. Not the end of the world, but it would have been so nice to sit outside. The iced caramel latte with oat milk was delicious! I would order their coffee again. My husband had a vanilla latte, and a friend had the lavender latte, both also very good! The food was okay. Not the best, not the worst. I ordered the Turkey Holiday sandwich. It was listed as a "favorite" so I thought I'd try something that I couldn't get anywhere else. It was described as turkey, cranberry sauce, avocado, cheese, bacon, lettuce, and aioli on a crescent roll. It was not the greatest, very little avocado and aioli, and just a little cranberry sauce that looked and tasted more like jam. It was definitely something I could easily make at home, nothing special. I also found two hairs in my French fries. I didn't say anything though because I was fine just picking them out. My husband ordered a Reuben sandwich, and he said the same thing, very underwhelming. Service was a little slow, but we didn't mind. Our waitresses were very nice! Last Saturday around 1pm, we stopped by for lunch and were informed of a 30‑minute wait. We headed to the bar to order drinks while waiting, yet it took about 20 minutes to receive them--even though the bar didn't seem busy. The staff appeared more engaged in chatting with friends than attending to customers. Once seated, the view from our table was excellent. We ordered a variety of dishes: a burger, a crab sandwich, and my husband's chilaquiles, which turned out to be the standout dish. However, after about 30 minutes, our server returned only to inform us that they were out of French fries. Our only alternatives were a side salad or sweet potato fries, which was surprising since we weren't warned of this shortage beforehand. Refills and additional drinks proved difficult to obtain despite our table being close to the kitchen. It seemed our waitress might have been overwhelmed or unsure of our needs. The crab sandwich was particularly disappointing--it was dry, lacked flavor, and at $48 for what appeared to be canned crab, it was not worth the price. I regret not asking if the crab was fresh. Overall, while the drinks and view are reasons to return, I'd choose another spot for a full meal. My kids got pasta one with marinara sauce and the other with just butter. We also order garlic fries and corn riblets. Appetizers were good, the rest not so much. We got adult entrees and 1 kids meal first. Took 5 extra minutes for the pasta with butter. Once my husband cut into his steak he realized the waiter never asked how he wanted his steak cooked. We really like Monica's. Especially in the morning on a day off to enjoy breakfast and a nice view. A few years ago, they had these wonderful eggs that were golden-colored in the yolks, but our server said they got rid of them because people didn't like the color?? Now they are the more "standard" yellow color, but my husband and I truly miss those gold eggs. They had so much flavor. We were sad to see them go for such a silly reason. Apart from that, the breakfast menu is great. I usually get the French toast, and my husband usually gets one of the Eggs Benedicts. The portions are HUGE and you get a lot of food for the money. The price point matches, in my opinion. The sausage patties are phenomenal! I recommend those, if you get to choose what side comes with your order. They also have espresso drinks, which is great. Sometimes I want something other than drip coffee, so a nice latte is always nice to have as an option! The mimosas are also great, if that is what you prefer. The food was delicious! We were there right around the brink of lunch service and the staff made accommodations to allow my little one to still have waffles which is what he wanted. We had the steak and cheese sandwich with a side salad and the holiday turkey sandwich with garlic fries, both were incredible. I have been to Monica's 3 times in total. Each visit had its own unique experience that inspired followup dine-in moments to help me grasp a more complete picture of this restaurant. First, the food. For the area, it's not bad at all. I have had some hits and misses here (i.e. from having a great tuna melt with hot crispy fries to finding hard shells in my questionable crab Benedict). The ambiance of this location is quaint & charming. Almost like the Far-East Bay version of eating at some cozy country kitchen on the Mississippi. The service, I think -- is where it all falls apart for me. Staff in bad moods, check-in anxiety from the door crew (as in--telling you you're going to be waiting much longer than you actually will--which almost gets comical). Some of the folks that work here are a lot more on top of it than others, but the kitchen cook should NEVER have to run their own food out. I feel like this is the type of place Tabitha Coffey or Gordon Ramsey would have fun flipping around in a week. It's not a total loss--and I'm happy it's still in business...I just know it could be so much more with a few tweaks and honest effort to tighten up a ship that feels like it's slowly sinking. read more

I was excited to come here for a family Sunday brunch but ended up having a disappointing experience. The wait to be seated wasn't too long but once we were seated, the service was pretty slow and we waited about an hour for our food to come out. I got the jumbo shrimp omelette and for $27 I was sad to only have 3 shrimp in the omelette. The dining room was SUPER loud, a couple family members orders came out incorrectly and an item never came out so we had to make sure it didn't end up on the bill. The parking lot was very jam packed and I had to park across the train tracks on the other street. Cannot go wrong with Monica's. I've been on two occasions now and the service as well as food have been fantastic. On the weekend, this place is busy and it's best to either arrive right at opening or plan for a wait. There is a small bar cart in the front waiting area that is great during warmer weather. Also expect a bit of a wait for service, but someone does come to get drink menus and let you know. Communication is key and my weekend group appreciated our server being prompt and also helping set expectations for our wait. We were happy To be informed and managed a 5-10 minute wait to put our orders in. Coming during the week results in faster seating and you get all the same foods. Just the ambiance is different during the week. Portion sizes are big, so bring an appetite or feel free to take your leftovers. I've had the large French toast dish and an omelette dish. Both times the food was fresh, served hot and nicely presented. Even the fruit was fresh. No soggy melons. Prices are average for a breakfast spot, about $15 to $20 per entree depending on your order. For a great experience, plan your time accordingly and remember wait staff are human beings too. Don't recommend coming, went in on a Friday at 3:30 and the bar is closed during the week apparently .They wanted me to stand there and wait for somebody to come make me a drink at the receptionist stand. I waited for 15 minutes. No one came to take my order and the place was empty. Everyone in there seen me standing there waiting, but no one cared to pay any mind. I keep trying to give this place the benefit of the doubt but every time I go, the service sucks the food sucks. The drink sucks so don't recommend going. Stopped by yesterday, Saturday, August 2 about 7 PM for some dinner. We ordered the prime rib, we split it as we are not real big eaters, it was plenty for the both of us. We told the waitress we were going to split it, it came out on one plate, we had to ask for an extra plate and an extra steak knife. We ordered the prime rib medium, it was well done, we just sucked it up and ate it, not going to order that again. The yukon gold potatoes with gravy was super delicious until we quickly noticed the abundance of crunchy salt dumped over the top of them. They really should leave the salt to the patrons, some people can't have that much salt. I asked for some horseradish, the guy looked at me like I was asking for something out of the ordinary, most steakhouses that serve prime rib also offer horseradish, 10 minutes later he brought me out a big serving bowl of horseradish lol. Needless to say our $56 prime rib was a disappointment, not going to order that again. The prices are just so high, it's just easier to stay home and cook a good meal and then just go out for drinks, but even those are real costly, $12-15 for a cocktail, crazy!! Today is my Birthday. And the first thing I wanted to eat was my pancakes at Monica's Riverview in Antioch! The food is so good. My goto is the Joe's Scramble which is what I ordered today but my super treat is their Crab Benny with Hollandaise / Fries and Ranch OMG Hubby, Chris ordered the Breakfast burrito with chorizo and linguisa and he loved it! Their pancakes are super delicious .. so good that you don't need any syrup but very convenient for me that they also carry Sugarfree syrup. We come back here not just for the food but for such awesome friendly service in every visit! Today as with other visits, we had Osiris and she is so sweet and offered my hubby to get both meats when he was undecided about getting chorizo or linguisa. She even went out of her way to get a Red Velvet Cupcake for my Birthday today. It's always a treat to come here especially with the ambience and vibe you get just by sitting at the booth with a beautiful Marina view. Went for Easter lunch. Sat at 1:15. Ordered at 1:30. Table next to us ordered after us. At 2:20 we hadn't seen our server at all but the table next to us (8 people) was done eating. I flagged down another server and questioned about how much longer? She stated they are short handed and it's a holiday. My grandson then pointed out another table that arrived after us was eating. At 2:45 our food arrived. I went to servers station and got us napkins, walked to three tables and found a partial full catsup bottle and sat down. I saw our server, got up and asked for water. He brought water with no ice and never offered re-fills on soft drinks. Food all around was horrible! My husband was fuming. I am previously a very well known restaurant owner and he is currently silent partner of three. I also watched other guests getting their own napkins and looking for help.
