Beautiful, well-stocked and plenty of local options! Loved visiting Mondo Vino with hubby over the weekend. We had originally stopped by to see if they still had a beer that had been posted on their Instagram, but it was sadly gone by the time we arrived. We were in no way disappointed after touring the rest of their store and found plenty more choices to be excited about! We were helped by a super friendly and VERY knowledgeable employee. She reallyyy knew her stuff, including the types of hops that went into each beer, which city/state the brewery was located in, tasting notes and more! They had quite a few leftovers from GABF and she was happy to show us some of the non-local guest beers they had to offer, which was a treat. And although we couldn't try the beer we had originally came for, hubby ended up leaving with a comparable option that he was super eager to try. Dropped in yesterday with our toddler in tow to pick up some beers. Our son has taken to searching the beer coolers for anything with a train on them. Unfortunately for him, no luck on the train front. However, the staff helped him search the wine section as well (still no luck) and then ultimately printed and cut out a picture of a train for him to take with him. I've always shopped local for my wine, but recently relocated to Denver from the Bay Area and have to find a new shop. While the staff is friendly and helpful...and the selection is great...all of their wine is overpriced. And I mean heavily overpriced. Example: their half bottle of Billecart Rose is the same price as a full bottle at the big shops. I purchased a cava for $50 because it sounded interesting and later found online for $29. I still believe in buying local, and will continue to search out for a local shop, however, just can't justify the markups at Mondo. Sorry guys. read more

I mean, ok, I'm really picky about wine shops, having been a buyer for one for a while long ago. But, I'd say they have a good selection (nothing like proof or the wine shop at the source but maybe a distant 4th?). But the issue is the prices. Just eyeballing it it appears that many of the wines are marked up like 20% from what you'd pay at a big box store. It's actually hard to look around and find something under $20, which to me is super unappealing even for me (I mean I like fine wine and will sometimes spend over $30 but there's great value in the 16-25$ price point!) To their credit, I asked an employee to pair something I was making for dinner and she recommended a totally eclectic Spanish rose that did the job for $15 (but I saw her peel off a label on the bottle that said $22 or $26 hmm). Either way that bottle was a good value for me! read more

Only knock I've heard about this place is "it's not good for beer". That's because it's Mondo VINO... not Mondo BEER-o. Sorry, but no animated St.Paulie Girl signs here. So, as a wine store, it's without peer. Great selection and an incredibly friendly staff (they even took time out to fire up Google Maps and give us accurate directions to a party). I liked how the wines are all organized by country, with little flags to designate them. Elegant decor, yet very accessible and welcoming. For a neighborhood that's kinda' swanky and pricey, this place seemed down-to-earth. As a bonus, they currently run FREE wine-tasting on Fridays and Saturdays between 4-7pm. Imagine that... wine-tasting at hours you can actually make. So drop in and sample a few wines before beginning your weekend nocturnal adventures. read more

Obviously much smaller than the liquor megamarts that I love so very much but the helpful staff and incredible selection for the store size more than make up for it. They have a ton of beers - about equivalent to any larger store even though this is more of a wine shop. They also have a really nice selection of microdistilled spirits including some non-conventional vodka flavors (honey, botanical, chipotle....I'm salivating just thinking about them). The wine selection is a tad intimidating, but that's what the staff is for! They obviously know their stuff but will speak to you rather than down to you when making recommendations. As others have mentioned, prices are a bit on the high side but worth it considering the selection and service. read more

At first, I was devoted. In fact, I spent a lot of money and time here. But as I realized that the staff was spending more time and attention on people who bought more expensive wines (yes, I'm a cheap date), I became really disappointed. Wine everywhere and a helpful staff. I've never had a bad experience at Mondo Vino and yes, I've been quite a few times. When I'm in a hurry, I will just go to the counter and say, "I need a wine that will go well with _______, but not too _______ but with a hint of _________ with a price range of ___________ ." He will then show me 2-3 bottles and explain all them. Then I choose one and enjoy it at home/dinner party/etc full with compliments. I'm never dissappointed. And sometimes I just go in and wander around and get a few random bottles. They are some bottles under $20 and over $50 and divided up by region. They also sell beer and liquor, but I usually stick to the wine here. read more

Before Mondo Vino, I avoided fancy wine shops of their kind. I don't like being overly helped, and I feel like they are generally so pricey, and I just hadn't gotten that into wine yet. I feel like Mondo Vino helped me get into wine more. It's a combination of being super helpful in their recommendations without being snobbish. Sometimes they'll ask what you're looking for, and you reply "a suitcase of PBR," and they will go and get it for you and ring it up like it's the most expensive bottle. But then sometimes you can come in and test them by telling them precisely what you're making for dinner and your price range and they'll recommend something great. They also let me bring my dog in, and they give him treats. Human treats + doggy treats in one place! The wine tastings are really fun on the weekends. They normally have really good cheese from next door. They won't, as my friend Timmy learned, "put all four kinds of wine in the same glass cuz I'm in a hurry." As they shouldn't. read more

Every time I am in this area, I can hear Mondo Vino calling my name- there is a distinct lull to the shop and I can never avoid it. The staff is incredible, they know their stuff and it is like they have been waiting all their life for little 'ol me to walk through their door asking for help. I have never been sold a bad bottle. The shop is so warm and inviting, which if I really stop to think about it is not good because I end up spending more- but that is also what keeps me coming back. I also love the wine tastings, and although it gets a little crowded, if you go a bit earlier you'll be able to belly up to the bar, no problem. It is just a tad bit pricier than my other fave (see Argonaut) but I have asked them to match prices or honor other wine store's coupons and they are happy to. This is a BIG WIN for me. I also know that I can walk in, be greeted by a staff member, say "dinner party tonight, under $12, red, bold" and I will be walking out of the door 5 minutes later with a great pick that meets my needs. I love love love this place. They have an outstanding selection of both wine and import beer. The staff is always willing to help you make the perfect selection, and are never anything but friendly. Sometimes I go in even when our fridge is stocked because the sales staff makes me feel like royalty! Pathetic on my part? Yes, but am I ashamed? Nope! The prices are completely reasonable, especially for the unique selection they have. They have many beers/wines you can't find at generic liquor stores. They also have a reasonable selection of hard liquor as well. Oh and they are extremely pet friendly, so I can pop in and pick up a six-pack while out walking my dogs, you can't beat that. I needed some wine to bring to dinner last night and was in the neighborhood so I decided to stop in here rather than trekking across town to my go to liquor store. I'm so glad I stopped in here. The service is amazing. The guy that helped me found two delicious bottles of wine for me. I told him what I was looking for in a white and a red and what price point I wanted to stay at and I loved the wines I went home with. Everyone at dinner agreed they were really good. I also wound up taking home a bottle of Rogue Pumpkin Ale which I am so excited about. If I lived near here I think it could be potentially dangerous to my liver :) read more

The Mondo Vino staff is probably going to hate me for telling you this, but if you go in on your actual birthday, they will let you pick ANY bottle of "mini-liquor" from behind their counter, regardless of price. I had no idea that this was their policy, but on my birthday, the guy was like "well cowboy, what kind of shooter would you like tonight?" I was floored, because that is not something you'd expect from a local, moderately-to-higher priced wine shop. It was a little gesture, but it was meaningful, and it made me appreciate and reinforced in my head the power and charm of the "local small business." Sadly, I paid full price for a Milli Vanilli album *after* they were exposed. Consider yourself lucky that I shared that little tidbit. Another ugly truth is that I am extremely knowledgeable about wine. I drink a lot, taste a lot; know if a wine is tannic, has a nose like grapefruit, has legs, was aged in California oak or French Oak. And as a wino (as some might call it), I really know what I like. I find it rare that when I walk in to a wine store they really listen to my preferences and make recommendations accordingly. But Mondo Vino is a home run. I just bought a half a case for a party and every single bottle was dead on. Some reviewers suggested that they don't have good "deals". But who needs a deal if it's off the mark. Mondo is well worth a premium, though it seemed sensibly priced to me. And they have a solid selection of hard liquor and beers. Beer... Solved! Great place - very friendly and helpful staff. I was sent here looking for a few hard to find local beers for my cellar. Found what I wanted and a few more rarities. The staff boxed it up and shipped it to my doorstep so it was waiting for me when I returned to SoCal. I was in and out of there in 10 minutes.
