If you're considering this venue for an event, don't…read more At a recent private event, crowd control was severely mismanaged. On site, security and event organizers confirmed Illuminarium made the call to just let people get their own items at coat check, which I've never seen before. This resulted in hundreds of guests shoving into the area and tossing their tags. Items were thrown around and confrontations broke out when people realized their coats were being taken. It was chaotic, unsafe and some, including myself, who stayed until early morning to look for their items, lost their coats and left in freezing weather conditions. Since the event, Illuminarium has focused on blaming other attendees for potential theft. They concluded they could not identify on security footage in the chaos, as expected. The issue was not about theft or coat check risk, that can happen at any event. This was clearly a logistical failure and mistakes can always happen. However, after several emails, Illuminarium has closed the issue without taking any responsibility, offering any apology or resolution of any kind. Based on their responses, I'm no longer expecting a resolution, but I hope sharing this helps others avoid a similar experience.

E are talking the highest calibre of professional theatre, which is astounding considering the size of Nightwood's operation. Second, the mission statement, a worthy endeavour: art by women for everyone. Again I would revert to the quality and say that this mission statement is endlessly strengthened by the quality how well it is pulled off. The result is a terrific cycle: the mission statement is worthy so they executive; they execute flawlessly, thus the mission statement has been justified and proved worthy; the mission statement having been proved worthy, they execute... And so on. I will add my own personal note. Each year Nightwood puts on a "lawyer show", a charity Shakespeare production featuring lawyer-actors (actor-neys, if you will). I had the great privilege of being involved in the 2014 show as a member of the chorus. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my adulthood. I was challenged and liberated in a way that I not been since undergrad. As a cast member I congratulate Nightwood on their technical and creative skills. Artistically visionary, able to lead lawyers (harder than herding cats) to perform like true actors. Full points to the production/stage and costume design too. I will add further and say that I was burial my drawn to this organization because I had previously been an audience member - so they get full points for drawing me in by making accessible and enjoy some (arguably) dense material. So if you are reading this review then you know my bottom line: top reading for goodness sake and get tickets to their next show!

Every actor is an amateur, they are all lawyers by school (and most by trade), and so you kind of go into it with pretty low expectations. At the beginning, they tell you that they know you have low expectations, and they will prove you wrong - and boy do they. This particular performance was at St Lawrence Centre for the Performing Arts. From the costumes, to the music, to the performances - if I hadn't known they weren't professional actors, I wouldn't have guessed it - was spot on. Plus, because it's for charity, you get a charitable receipt. I would have paid full price either way. Really great experience!

One of those shops I had the pleasure of stumbling upon is called the Sport Gallery. Although the Sport Gallery shop claims to focus mainly on sports photography, the store also carries other unique sports memorabilia such as wallets with a piece of a game used baseball stitched inside them, game used baseball bat bottle openers, and game used hockey puck cuff links. In search of a cool present for my husband, I noticed that they carried a line of Cooperstown bullpen jackets - unfortunately none of them were of my husband's favourite team (SF GIANTS). Desperate to find a perfect gift for my hubby, a staff member was eager to assist me with my dilemma and advised me they had the jacket in stock at their Vancouver location and would be able to ship it to their Toronto store. It took less than a week for the jacket to arrive and I was notified right away once it came in. There were no hassels picking up and paying for the jacket. The transaction went smoothly and I am still in awe of the amazing customer service I had experienced. If you are a sports fan or looking for a unique gift for your sports loving friend/partner this place is the perfect place for it. Despite the small size of the store, they carry a substantial amount of sports memorabilia and if they don't have what you are looking for their staff are INCREDIBLY helpful - at least with my experience they went above and beyond to help me find the perfect gift. Overall, wonderful service. Great products. A bit pricey but that is expected with sports memorabilia.

I really enjoyed and have become a fan of Mathieu Laca's oil paintings. The gallery is edgy and fun. I really loved the feel of the gallery. Bricks make everything better.

We ended up buying 2 Van Gogh pieces and 1 flower piece. I've purchased other pieces from Mathieu before the show. He is a talented artist, taking many of his portraits from existing pictures you can find on wikipedia and using lots of impasto. A few weeks later the crates arrive here in the US and the 42x48 Van Gogh is perfect! The 16x20 flower painting is perfect! The larger Van Gogh pic that was 72x60 ended up being too big for any of the areas we were trying to fit it in once we saw it in person inside our home. This is where things turn bad. I sent a very kind email to the gallery letting them know the situation and that I will need to send the painting back, as the size does not work. I offered to pay all shipping and handling costs on my end. I get a nasty text from Mathieu the artist asking "WTF" (not really the way to speak to a customer). I then get a nasty email from the gallery, who told Mathieu I was wanting to return the piece. At this point my wife and I were very surprised. Mathieu was all about peace, love and acceptance....until a piece didn't work out. As long as people were flattering him and the gallery about how wonderful and talented they are, (feeding their ego's) they were the nicest people around. But the exact second something didn't work out, we got to see their TRUE nature. I ended up still sending the large piece back even though the gallery at first said they would refuse shipment. I paid ALL costs to ship and even paid $600 for some made up admin/disposal/restocking fees. We spent over $6K at the gallery on works that we kept (Not to mention over $1,000 travel to the show from the US) and all combined we've spent about $20K on pieces from this artist. In fact 11 pieces we bought from this artist and when ONE piece didn't work out, everyone got nasty. From the very beginning I said to the gallery that this piece will sell fast once I send it back, but Joanne and Mathieu were horrible the entire time. And the funny part is within a few weeks of the piece being retuned, it sold. So all this drama, ruining 2 customer relationships who will never return to do business with them, all for nothing. Imagine you have a business and a buyer buys 3 items. 1 doesn't work out and that customer offers to pay ALL associated return costs plus any restocking fees, and you being horribly rude to them, all for the piece to sell a few weeks later. Pretty myopic on their end if you ask me. I honestly really don't even want to display any of his works in my home any longer. Each time I look at a piece on my wall, I think "What nasty people" instead of appreciating the beauty of them. If I could do it all over again, I wouldn't have ever contacted him or the gallery to begin with. And I recommend you don't either. The only reason I am giving a 2 star and not a 1 is the employees there were fantastic to deal with, but not the gallery owner Joanne who controls everything and was nasty with me. Lastly, Mathieu's husband, when he noticed I had written a negative review, THREATENED me online. I took a screenshot of it and reported it. I'm also considering legal action.
