I shared the Steak Nachos Al Carbon with my uncle and it had a nice temperature to the food, I think it was a fair serving as well. However, the only problem I ran into was that there was a small hair on the bottom of my plate, thankfully towards the side of the plate so it wasn't too big of a deal to me. Upon arriving at Monarcas, we were amidst a shower. We were welcomed with warm smiles and carpet(I'm a sucker for carpet). The ambiance of the restaurant was very nice, a perfect mixture of America's Wild South and Mexican Culture. I ordered the "Hot Chicken Wings," At first, I figured that it may not actually be hot, as in spicy but they have a very nice in-borne seasoning, not too spicy. We stopped here on our way home from the beach yesterday and had lunch and stretched our legs. That was unfortunate. When we walked in, I noticed the dingy interior. It looks vaguely dirty and smells a little musty, underneath the sizzling fajita smell. A visit to the bathroom confirmed my gut feeling that this was not a great place. One stall was clogged with, well, you can guess. There is no diaper changing station so there was a young mother in there changing her son's poopy diaper on the sink counter. Filthy. Ordinary food and very slow service. I was also lied to by my waitress when I requested a Margarita. She said no alcohol could be served until after 1 PM. In going on line found Troy law said after 12PM. Probably the first time in 20 years I was told no margaritas. WOW!!! So Great! We were passing through town while we traveled back home from Florida and a patron while we got gas recommended Monarcas. He said he ate there several times a week. What a fortune meeting...Monarcas is some of the Best Mexican food I've ever had! The steak quesadilla was Amazing! The meat and onions caramelized and the steak was so tender and flavorful! Maybe my standards for Mexican are a little different, but I did not find anything overwhelming about this place. I will say this, the margaritas were great and the staff was friendly and welcoming. Don't get me wrong, the food was not absolutely terrible, but it was sub-par compared to other Mexican places I have eaten at around the country. I had a plate that consisted of enchiladas, tamales, rice and beans. The rice was bland and the red sauce was really watery, which not only thinned it out consistency wise, but also thinned out the flavor. It was a mediocre tex-mex meal at its best. I ordered our food almost 30 minutes prior to picking up, was quoted 20. I get there and they don't even have my order, AT ALL.. I repeat the exact same order multiple times while the manager and server both stood there. Manager wrote down my order and took it to the kitchen. I wait an additional 10 minutes, just for them to fuck it up AGAIN. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and a beef burrito. Not complicated AT ALL. They might've gotten our order correct the second time had they not continued with an entire conversation, while asking me to repeat the order. I love monarcas, but that's absurd. Some of the worst Mexican food I've ever had. This stuff has absolutely no flavor whatsoever. The red sauce was basically watered down tomato juice. Is there a way to give this place -4 stars? If so please let me know because that is what kind of service my friends and I received upon visiting this establishment. When I asked to order a drink my sever said "nah" then turned and left. He ignored my friends and I at any request we asked (which was not much). We asked our sever for more chips and he turned and walked away. 15 minutes later he returned with some chips, but proceeded to DUMP them onto our table. Then he left like nothing had happened. By the time our food got to us it was lukewarm at best. The server made this experience one of the best if he was trying to make us never come back there again. I am not entirely sure why people love this place. I am not local so I have no ties so to speak. I can only compare them to rodeo in town. 1st I walked in and had to wait 3 minutes to be seated. I was never acknowledged by the 2 people who passed me one on his way to check somone out. He could have just said be right with you. 2. I was given a table right next to the entrance. Above my head was all the menus on the rail. As I ate dinner people were hovering above me as they waited to be seated. There were 5 other tables that were all empty. 3. I ordered titos they don't have that. Got well instead it was fine. 4. Normally get chicken. I have been tying to eat healtheir. They are extremely limited on chicken options. I decided for chicken fajitas. They were very bland. Just really tasted of grease. The positives were there salsa is good and chips are fresher than rodeo but I will not come back. I found the exterior and interior of the restaurant grungy upon first glance. Yes, the building is slightly dilapidated, but it doesn't appear dirty or unsanitary. I was seated almost immediately, and from there on out, while the servers were a little awkward, the service was great. We received everything we asked for within a few minutes of ordering it. The chips and salsa were terrific, and while I little watery, the queso dip was above average too. I received my order of chicken enchiladas, and immediately realized that the presentation wasn't fantastic, but beyond appearances, the food was pretty good. Two of us ate lunch here yesterday (23 March 2018). Both enjoyed the food; service was good; everyone was courteous. Females bathroom (per my wife) was clean and trash-free. Some prior reviewers complained about the bathrooms-yes, they are dirty at times, and it would be great if they were in better condition/upgraded but, I have also seen them get trashed due to folks that eat here during Troy University games; folks passing thru on vacation etc, that don't care about hitting the trash can, and the usual slobs that may eat here (or anywhere else for that matter). Need to bring it to mgrs. attn when see this in their bathrooms. Also-some of the servers do not speak English very well (or at all), and have been embarrassed by their lack of it. So I never take that alone as an insult. If I was a non-Spanish speaker visiting Mexico, I may just point at something too (as a customer) if not in a establishment that caters to English speakers. read more

I ordered the combination enchiladas, which I thought was three enchilada because the menu but turns out it's four. The beef and chicken in them are incredibly seasoned and I'm beyond satisfied. The cheese enchilada and the bean enchilada are lack luster and disappointing, especially cause the cheese one was cold :(. Another upside is the medium marg is huge for the price. After I mixed it, it seriously looked like dog food with lettuce in it. We asked the waiter if I could get something else, and he responded "If you dont like it, will you pay for it?" We went to the new restaurant in the Edison Mall with a group of 8 people. The service was very unattentive and not very friendly and the prices were high for a Mexican restaurant. We were probably one of three other tables, so not too busy. First there was a drink special two for one, but we were not allowed to share the drinks with someone else. Waitress never refilled our water until we finally grabbed hold of someone else. No chips and salsa refill either. One lady ordered a two for one margerita and never got it. One lady had tacos and everything on the plate was stone cold and she had to ask them to reheat it - which the waitress reluctantly did with a sour face . It took about 15 minutes for them to bring it back. Everyone's beans and rice were cold to lukewarm. To top it all, the lady got charged for the margerita she never received, and everyone automatically had a 20% tip added on the bill in small print of course! With the option to add an additional 10% tip that would make it 30% tip! All this for horrible service, mediocre and overpriced food and the trickery of forcing you to tip above and beyond. We have been eating here since they opened up in Troy. They have added a smaller, not-as nice looking extension (but food still good) in Luverne, AL. The staff are all very friendly, and the food has always been good. They are extremely busy with their sister restaurant-forgot name-currently being rebuilt (also in Troy). I noticed the other reviewers have marked, "no take-outs". That is incorrect-if referring to ordering your food via phone or ordering inside to take out. They have had take-out service from day of opening. read more
