Fun little place! Small space but seems like a happening spot. Spent sunday watching football!

Eh, when the bartender is wearing a shirt that says on it "OBEY" maybe he should obey his boss and take his drink orders a little faster instead of texting at the bar/and/or talking to the overly tanned girl with the obviously fake ID. So this is where all the attractive people are in San Fran. Just kidding... (but not really). This place is very casual. I was quite overdressed and did hear about it from several of the "bros" there. Awesome crowd of people here though... bartenders were great. By the night's end I felt like Patrick and I had been friends for a long time. He kept the Jameson and Guinness flowing for only $12 per round. Bear fights, "bro" fights, getting mauled by a random hot girl at the bar, and a missed connection all made of the best night I had in my recent trip to SF! ("Bear fight" is a Jaeger bomb followed immediately by an Irish car bomb) As far as the missed connection... Reposting my review from nine years ago, which was taken down for some reason. Stopped in recently, and saw no reason to recant... The owner (Dave?) will sit at the bar and literally monitor your drinking. If it seems like you're nursing your drink, he will tell you that if you're not drinking, you're leaving. This actually happened to me, and on a night when there were plenty of open seats in the bar, to boot. Congratulations, you just lost my business forever. As an alternative, I strongly recommend the Marina Lounge, The Horseshoe, and Campus over this joint; at least they appreciate my patronage! read more

I used to not be a fan of Monaghans. It smelled like vomit. all the time. There wasn't really anything about it that made it stand out except that it smelled like barf. Well, Monaghans moved next door to the old Pierce Street Manor and it's amazing what a move will do for a place. Monaghans is my new go-to bar in the Marina. It's about what you expect from a neighborhood bar and that sort of comfortability makes it convenient. There's a pool table and plenty of TVs. I watched Game 5 of the World Series here and Monaghans provided a great experience. No doubt that moment may have influenced this review but there were TV's everywhere and I didn't miss a moment of the game. The staff did a good job of getting hundreds of Giants fans celebratory drinks and they didn't mind the beer spraying all over their establishment as fans celebrated long into the night. And speaking of the staff, they're attentive, they're good looking, and they're nice. For whatever reason, it seems like these bartenders care about you. They have buckets of beer that are reasonable and I have yet to have a poor experience since they moved. The crowd isn't too Marina-ish. Mostly just a bunch of people having a good time. The ratio is usually fair as well, which, for a guy, is all we can ask for. The only negative is that it can get a bit warm when people pack in and it can get a bit crowded. But it never feels like you can't move. Go to Monaghans, tip the bartenders, and enjoy yourself. I know I will. read more

I wasn't expecting much from this place so I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't impressed either. My overall experience was A-OK, hence the three stars. -1 star.... Some crazy croatian guy was speaking to me in Greek and got extremely flustered when I told him to speak English. His reaction? He took his shirt off and started counting to ten, as if I was supposed to learn the whole Greek language within those ten seconds. I started backing up into the wall as he was inching closer and closer to me and I was praying to God that someone come and save me. Low and behold the huge bouncer comes and saves me from this half naked croatian and makes him put his shirt back on. The crowd is predominantly caucasian which was a nice change from my usual asian crowd. I was one of the three asian girls that were there. There were a few lookers, I'll be honest, and everyone in there was friendly. -1 star for a broken bathroom. They have two bathrooms and the womens was flooded for the first half of the night. read more

Without doubt the best bar in SF. Whether you like a Hazy or West Coast they have the best IPAs. Pliny also a staple on the menu. Bar staff are fantastic and make you feel welcome whether you are new in town or a regular. Came here as a tourist and now happy to call it my local. read more

Being in San Francisco's Marina area for 5 nights, I was quick to find something that had everything Monaghan's Bar provided. Drinks at a reasonable price with happy hour at even better pricing. Some great and friendly staff who helped a Brit out with an American-menu. Locals who I still communicate with, and an alright pleasant easy going place to drink, relax or get pissed. read more

I always have fun at this bar and with their new location it makes the experience even better. The vibe and feel of the bar itself feel the same from the old place (which is a good thing). Monaghan's is just off the main street of Chestnut but fairly large with several nice flat screens, plenty of space and yes a fresh popcorn maker! This is a huge perk for me. I like nibbling when I drink. They have a nice pool table in here as well. The bar is pretty long, and there's tables along the other side. They have a nice happy hour, and the drink prices are reasonable otherwise. $5 can get you a nice beer like Stella, and $6 can get you a well poured glass of house sauvignon blanc. When there is a game going on, this is one of the less crowded options and better in my opinion. read more

We went in here about an hour before the Indiana vs. Iowa game started. We aren't sports fans so we didn't even know about it. We lucked out because we got a good table and a good pool of game in before the place became back to back PACKED once the game started. We had an awesome time here. We were rotating on getting drinks so I only had to go up once and I didn't have to wait too long to get drinks even though it was packed in there. Best Bar in the Marina hands down! Anna and Graham are the BEST bartenders HANDS DOWN!!! They are both smoking hot and make the best drinks.... I always stop by this particular bar in the Marina because it has a great vibe from the start of just getting your id checked by the ever so sweet Jamal. Nothing really special about the place, but on a thursday night, it offered a spacious nook area to sit, less crowds where other marina places were packed, and cheap drink specials. I wish bars would concentrate on just being a bar, and leave the sports to sports bars. sometimes, I just wanna drink in a place w/ some character, and the multitude of plasmas and lcds kinda kills it for me. Seeing that I've only been here twice, my opinion of this place isn't really complete. 1st time I was here was for the pub crawl so it was super packed. It was cool because they were offering $2 rum and cokes (my fave). The atmosphere was cool-definitely pub-like. They had a thing with free popcorn which was a definite plus! 2nd time was at night and I had already been out drinking elsewhere. It was again really crowded which I guess just means it's a super popular place. I didn't buy any drinks this time so I can't really judge on the prices. Man, this bar has some VERY expensive drinks. Maybe I'm spoiled because I drink in a demographic area that is more friendly toward my bank account. Regardless, there should be a limit on what they can charge for cocktails, especially in the middle of the afternoon. You're likely to find a plethora of lame dudes hanging out, watching a sporting event, but don't bring your dog, they'll act all douchy and pretend they are all confused that it's a park rather than a bar. Driving in the city on a rainy day and decided to grab a beer. Haven't been in the Marina in a long time. One thing I love is Irish pubs! On a Saturday, during March Madness, this place was insane!! Even though I was looking for a quiet place to have a beer, I didn't mind the crowd or the noise. I actually loved it for many reasons 1) VERY DIFFERENT CROWD 2) CHEAP BOOZE ( for four drinks it was 23 dollars) 3)ENTERTAINED BY THE RIDICULOUSLY DRUNK MAN SITTING NEXT TO ME 4) IT'S NICE TO COME INTO A BAR ON A SATURDAY DURING THE DAY TO FIND A GREAT CROWD HAVING AN AWESOME TIME The only set back was the music. I assume someone kept skipping songs on a ipod. If I find myself in the Marina again, which isn't often, I'll definitely stop in for beer! read more

FRAUD! BEWARE!!! I ordered 2 double vodka sodas. Came out to around $34. Left a $6 tip. Got up to use the restroom. Upon my return, my friend informs me, he watched a woman (not the actual bartender who served me) get up from where she was sitting behind the bar, take my receipt and rip it up. She then filled out the other copy that I left behind and SIGNED IT as if she was me. My friend questioned her, and she of course was "caught" if you will. She didn't realize he was with me. She claimed that if someone doesn't sign their bill, they automatically rip up their receipt and add 20%. Now, I was about a dollar off of 20%, my bad. But I most definitely did sign my bill. But let's just say I didn't. Why not ask me to sign it since I'm still in the establishment and was returning to my seat at the bar. Also, was she really ripping up my receipt to only add about a dollar for that 20% My guess is no. God only knows how much she was going to add to the bill. I tried contacting the owner personally and likely will be contacting the police. I'm not big on reviews especially negative ones but when I called a female on the phone said she had no clue when the manager/owner would be in and I feel I have an obligation to warn others. Basically be watchful if you go here, their bartenders commit fraud and steal from their customers. read more

I come here almost exclusively for the jukebox; they've recently upgraded it so that it downloads songs from the internet instead of actually playing CDs. That intenet thing was a really good call, in hindsight. Good looking out. I like this place because the aforementioned jukebox leads to numerous bar-wide singalongs. Unless, of course, you're there with someone who sucks at life and picks an obscure song that 13 people in the world know. It can get a bit crowded late in the evening, but it's not at all bad for the Marina. read more

I went here on a Tuesday night to watch the Giants game and was pleasantly surprised to find it was trivia night. Trivia at Monoghan's doesn't make you feel stupid and claiming, "I was just going to say that!" to your friends when they shout out answers to questions on topics of which you have no clue. Trivia here is a good mix between pop culture, current events, sports and general knowledge. I've never been here on another night but would recommend their trivia. read more

I come here all the time -- the atmosphere is very hole in the wall, which is a nice change, especially in the Marina. You see a lot of regulars, and occasionally you'll see some Giants players -- Pat Burrell and crew have been sighted once or twice. The atmosphere is chill... All righty then, I am no professional critic of anything. Yes, I was born here, and have continued to live here all my life. ( Life is actually long, I promise.) When I want to go out and have lunch with friends, or find a place to have a drink and chat in the afternoon, I've searched out many places. I'm not young enough to be thrilled with raucous noise, so I get kinda particular. I've found Monaghan's to be a great bar where I can spend my time. Three o'clock today,the opening game was on, the folks were excited, but it was seriously comfortable. The drinks were nicely strong, and the bartender, Anna, is one of the best, and most friendly, cheerful, person behind any bar I've frequented. Nice going people......I will be back. read more

The cheapest drinks in the Marina. Enough said. It's almost always crowded and my friend love this place. It's a small pub with one pool table you can't play at on weekends because it too crowded. It's full of chads, if you wondering what that world means come here or urban dictionary it, this place is home too the originals. It's one of the bar I find myself at regularly for some strange reason. As you can tell for my review it's just a crowed pub with average service and nothing special to offer. It's defiantly worth checking out but once feeling good I recommend the Tipsy pig or exploring other bars around the area, there each very different with more to offer just with more expensive drinks. So if you on a bro night out with buddies and not looking to spend a lot this is a great place to start. Just not an amazing bar compared to what's around it. A bit biased since this is a Cubs bar. Monaghan's is as laid back and easy going sports bar you're going to find in the Marina. The pours are strong, they have Effen Black, popcorn flows freely and the bartenders, especially Anna, are great. Monday is Pub Quiz and is always has a fun crowd. read more

This place is amazing if you are a Penn State football fan. Saturdays the bar is overrun by big 10ers, especially Nittany Lions!! The bar has multiple tvs allowing for you to watch from any spot. It has a great beer selection and is relatively cheap. The bar also has a pool table, juke box, and popcorn maker. I would definitely eat before if you are going to watch a game, because as good as the popcorn is, you'll be drinking like you're back at dear old state and the popcorn will not help when it comes to controlling your sobriety. read more

It's your basic Irish Pub in a Box, to be found in every neighborhood in every city. Yes, they serve Guinness and Jameson's, but no Harp or Bass, so no black & tan or half & half. But the bar is comfy, the bartender (Mia) was pretty and good at her job and the prices were OK. As anywhere in the Marina, the parking sucks. Uber or bike absolutely mandatory, as it's a nice, upscale touristy neighborhood and there is a large SFPD presence. read more

a fantastic fan haven for SF Giants fans around the city. I celebrated Game 2 of the World Series there--Giants vs. Texas, which btw was a blowout win by the Giants 9-0. To top it all off, after I played some back to back Journey tunes--specifically Lights followed by Don't Stop Believing, Aubrey Huff and Pat Burrell walked through the door and had literally cupped their ear in honor of the Giants anthem. THey came in, slapped the fans with high fives, and continued to party the night away with that magical Giants energy. The woman I was with saw her first baseball game that night, her first homerun, and her first Giants Win. LIghts played in the Eighth and views of the Golden Gate bridge and the trolley cars filled the larger than life screen in the outfield. truly a magical experience. following, the streets were filled witha wild enthusiasm the likes i have never seen in SF. Also, it was fun to chat with Huff and have an interesting chat with Burrell in the can...hilarious guy. GO GIANTS!!! read more

Jesus H. Christ. If I could sum this place up in one word, it would be AVOID. My wife and I popped in here for a quick drink after dinner. And it literally turned into a very quick drink as we wanted to get out of there so quickly. The bar was messy, there were broken chips all over the floor and tables, but that would've been tolerable as the drinks selection and service itself seemed fine, but the clientele? Dreadful. It wasn't particularly busy on a Sunday night, but the people that were there were a bunch of bros and their girlfriends, who were all way, way too drunk, loud and obnoxious. At one point one of the bros lifted up one of the girls and promptly dropped her right on her head! We'd barely been there five minutes and we were sick of their drunken buffoonery. After the head-dropping incident, we swiftly drank up and departed. Maybe we caught it on a bad night, but you know what they say about first impressions. the other day, i crossed market on 4th street and saw a familiar face. she was the older, asian woman that hands out flyers for a nail salon. i've never accepted a flyer from her, but that day, i did. (but why? i've only gone to nail salons on four occasions in my entire life.) her gaze was downward. worn. unaffected by city clangor. w/an outstretched arm, a piece of paper loosely clasped in her hand. give it a chance. give the situation a chance. i took a flyer. she looked up, surprised, and said, 'thank you.' who knows if i actually made her day, but i'd like to think that being open to the possibility of deconstructing monotony made SOME kind of impact. that, and social interaction. can you imagine walking through masses of crowds and not being acknowledged? ---- the marina. criticized. gawked at. ...by most of sf, myself included at times. i thought i'd give the area yet another chance. it can't be ALL bad. besides, who doesn't love a good trivia night on a monday? the bartendress was friendly. she complimented my new do. i ate about 20 lbs worth of free popcorn. (they allow outside food too!) my inner nerd relished in the fact that the entire bar would noticeably quiet down, each time a trivia question was asked. a few guys came in to have a couple of beers, not knowing that there was a trivia night, but was respectful enough to quiet down too when the questions were read aloud. they even tried to help at one point. i'm a big fan of second chances. even third and fourth ones. imperfection is an acquired taste, telling of genuine character and intentions, disguised as fault. (oh, but damn, monaghan's, please change your toilet paper. the whole roll was moist so i had to use paper towels. i don't want to even think about why the whole roll was wet.) read more
