When this place is empty it's usually during the pre "Afterwork crowd" boom. So it's filled with interestingly scary drunks. I mean, they are probably in the age range of 40-50s or so, yet they look in their 60s. Very creepy. Otherwise, I like the Marina bars at night. (Okay I've only been in 2 so far.) So of course it depends on which ones you go too, some house 30somethings sipping on wine with children waiting at home. Those are boring and make me nauseous. No, I like a Marina bar with a slightly younger and single crowd. Mostly because it's got a familar homey vibe for me. I came here with a pub crawl crowd Saturday afternoon, I don't know if any of you all saw people in white t-shirts marking each other with sharpies, wearing douchebag sunglasses, acting like douchebags who were still in college. ... like myself What can I say, these were some of my friends from college, it brought it out in me. ------------- IN ANY CASE: The bartenders were really friendly and cool as our group (of locusts) came in and swarmed the place with unfound arrogance. The first time I came here wasn't really a good experience. But given that was during a weekend and past midnight, I decided to try it out again with a friend during daytime. Came in during happy hour 430-7pm and was greeted with this sweet bartender, Anna! (I think) My first time here was dirty, full of drunk frat boys and sorority girls so the second time I really appreciated because I've never seen this place so clean without popcorn all over the floor. (they have free popcorn!) Drinks were awesome and the service was great. Bartender had a good attitude and overall she was pleasant to talk to! I was quite overdressed and did hear about it from several of the "bros" there. Awesome crowd of people here though... bartenders were great. By the night's end I felt like Patrick and I had been friends for a long time. He kept the Jameson and Guinness flowing for only $12 per round. I used to not be a fan of Monaghans. It smelled like vomit. all the time. There wasn't really anything about it that made it stand out except that it smelled like barf. Well, Monaghans moved next door to the old Pierce Street Manor and it's amazing what a move will do for a place. Monaghans is my new go-to bar in the Marina. It's about what you expect from a neighborhood bar and that sort of comfortability makes it convenient. There's a pool table and plenty of TVs. I watched Game 5 of the World Series here and Monaghans provided a great experience. No doubt that moment may have influenced this review but there were TV's everywhere and I didn't miss a moment of the game. The staff did a good job of getting hundreds of Giants fans celebratory drinks and they didn't mind the beer spraying all over their establishment as fans celebrated long into the night. And speaking of the staff, they're attentive, they're good looking, and they're nice. For whatever reason, it seems like these bartenders care about you. They have buckets of beer that are reasonable and I have yet to have a poor experience since they moved. The crowd isn't too Marina-ish. Mostly just a bunch of people having a good time. The ratio is usually fair as well, which, for a guy, is all we can ask for. The only negative is that it can get a bit warm when people pack in and it can get a bit crowded. But it never feels like you can't move. Go to Monaghans, tip the bartenders, and enjoy yourself. I know I will. read more

I wasn't expecting much from this place so I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't impressed either. My overall experience was A-OK, hence the three stars. -1 star.... Some crazy croatian guy was speaking to me in Greek and got extremely flustered when I told him to speak English. His reaction? He took his shirt off and started counting to ten, as if I was supposed to learn the whole Greek language within those ten seconds. I started backing up into the wall as he was inching closer and closer to me and I was praying to God that someone come and save me. Low and behold the huge bouncer comes and saves me from this half naked croatian and makes him put his shirt back on. The crowd is predominantly caucasian which was a nice change from my usual asian crowd. I was one of the three asian girls that were there. There were a few lookers, I'll be honest, and everyone in there was friendly. -1 star for a broken bathroom. Monaghan's is just off the main street of Chestnut but fairly large with several nice flat screens, plenty of space and yes a fresh popcorn maker! This is a huge perk for me. I like nibbling when I drink. They have a nice pool table in here as well. The bar is pretty long, and there's tables along the other side. They have a nice happy hour, and the drink prices are reasonable otherwise. $5 can get you a nice beer like Stella, and $6 can get you a well poured glass of house sauvignon blanc. When there is a game going on, this is one of the less crowded options and better in my opinion. read more

We went in here about an hour before the Indiana vs. Iowa game started. We aren't sports fans so we didn't even know about it. We lucked out because we got a good table and a good pool of game in before the place became back to back PACKED once the game started. We had an awesome time here. We were rotating on getting drinks so I only had to go up once and I didn't have to wait too long to get drinks even though it was packed in there. It's your basic Irish Pub in a Box, to be found in every neighborhood in every city. Yes, they serve Guinness and Jameson's, but no Harp or Bass, so no black & tan or half & half. But the bar is comfy, the bartender (Mia) was pretty and good at her job and the prices were OK. As anywhere in the Marina, the parking sucks. Uber or bike absolutely mandatory, as it's a nice, upscale touristy neighborhood and there is a large SFPD presence. read more

Man, this bar has some VERY expensive drinks. Maybe I'm spoiled because I drink in a demographic area that is more friendly toward my bank account. Regardless, there should be a limit on what they can charge for cocktails, especially in the middle of the afternoon. You're likely to find a plethora of lame dudes hanging out, watching a sporting event, but don't bring your dog, they'll act all douchy and pretend they are all confused that it's a park rather than a bar. Seeing that I've only been here twice, my opinion of this place isn't really complete. 1st time I was here was for the pub crawl so it was super packed. It was cool because they were offering $2 rum and cokes (my fave). The atmosphere was cool-definitely pub-like. They had a thing with free popcorn which was a definite plus! 2nd time was at night and I had already been out drinking elsewhere. It was again really crowded which I guess just means it's a super popular place. I didn't buy any drinks this time so I can't really judge on the prices. Driving in the city on a rainy day and decided to grab a beer. Haven't been in the Marina in a long time. One thing I love is Irish pubs! On a Saturday, during March Madness, this place was insane!! Even though I was looking for a quiet place to have a beer, I didn't mind the crowd or the noise. I actually loved it for many reasons 1) VERY DIFFERENT CROWD 2) CHEAP BOOZE ( for four drinks it was 23 dollars) 3)ENTERTAINED BY THE RIDICULOUSLY DRUNK MAN SITTING NEXT TO ME 4) IT'S NICE TO COME INTO A BAR ON A SATURDAY DURING THE DAY TO FIND A GREAT CROWD HAVING AN AWESOME TIME The only set back was the music. I come here almost exclusively for the jukebox; they've recently upgraded it so that it downloads songs from the internet instead of actually playing CDs. That intenet thing was a really good call, in hindsight. Good looking out. I like this place because the aforementioned jukebox leads to numerous bar-wide singalongs. Unless, of course, you're there with someone who sucks at life and picks an obscure song that 13 people in the world know. I went here on a Tuesday night to watch the Giants game and was pleasantly surprised to find it was trivia night. Trivia at Monoghan's doesn't make you feel stupid and claiming, "I was just going to say that!" to your friends when they shout out answers to questions on topics of which you have no clue. Trivia here is a good mix between pop culture, current events, sports and general knowledge. I've never been here on another night but would recommend their trivia. read more

The cheapest drinks in the Marina. Enough said. It's almost always crowded and my friend love this place. It's a small pub with one pool table you can't play at on weekends because it too crowded. It's full of chads, if you wondering what that world means come here or urban dictionary it, this place is home too the originals. It's one of the bar I find myself at regularly for some strange reason. As you can tell for my review it's just a crowed pub with average service and nothing special to offer. It's defiantly worth checking out but once feeling good I recommend the Tipsy pig or exploring other bars around the area, there each very different with more to offer just with more expensive drinks. So if you on a bro night out with buddies and not looking to spend a lot this is a great place to start. Just not an amazing bar compared to what's around it. This place is amazing if you are a Penn State football fan. Saturdays the bar is overrun by big 10ers, especially Nittany Lions!! The bar has multiple tvs allowing for you to watch from any spot. It has a great beer selection and is relatively cheap. The bar also has a pool table, juke box, and popcorn maker. I would definitely eat before if you are going to watch a game, because as good as the popcorn is, you'll be drinking like you're back at dear old state and the popcorn will not help when it comes to controlling your sobriety. read more

Everyone references this as the Penn State bar, wherein this is the Texas A&M bar. We are better fans and have more fun. Great bar - the staff is excellent and great praises to Patrick, the owner. a fantastic fan haven for SF Giants fans around the city. I celebrated Game 2 of the World Series there--Giants vs. Texas, which btw was a blowout win by the Giants 9-0. To top it all off, after I played some back to back Journey tunes--specifically Lights followed by Don't Stop Believing, Aubrey Huff and Pat Burrell walked through the door and had literally cupped their ear in honor of the Giants anthem. THey came in, slapped the fans with high fives, and continued to party the night away with that magical Giants energy. The woman I was with saw her first baseball game that night, her first homerun, and her first Giants Win. LIghts played in the Eighth and views of the Golden Gate bridge and the trolley cars filled the larger than life screen in the outfield. truly a magical experience. following, the streets were filled witha wild enthusiasm the likes i have never seen in SF. Also, it was fun to chat with Huff and have an interesting chat with Burrell in the can...hilarious guy. GO GIANTS!!! read more

Jesus H. Christ. If I could sum this place up in one word, it would be AVOID. My wife and I popped in here for a quick drink after dinner. And it literally turned into a very quick drink as we wanted to get out of there so quickly. The bar was messy, there were broken chips all over the floor and tables, but that would've been tolerable as the drinks selection and service itself seemed fine, but the clientele? Dreadful. It wasn't particularly busy on a Sunday night, but the people that were there were a bunch of bros and their girlfriends, who were all way, way too drunk, loud and obnoxious. At one point one of the bros lifted up one of the girls and promptly dropped her right on her head! We'd barely been there five minutes and we were sick of their drunken buffoonery. After the head-dropping incident, we swiftly drank up and departed. Maybe we caught it on a bad night, but you know what they say about first impressions. Looked for a local bar while walking in the Presidio area to grab a beer and watch the Warriors game. Found this while walking and checked it out. Regular beers were less than $5 for a Sunday night because of their happy hour. It wasn't crowded when we went, so there were plenty of seating, both at the bar and table stools. There was a pool table along with great music that was being played. A very local bar for those who live in the area. Very friendly staff that was working as well as good recommendations and full explanations on other drinks that they had listed. Definitely recommend coming here if you are looking to grab a quick beer with friends or even trying to catch a sports game. read more
