We bought a house with a side yard and a retaining wall that went the length of the house. But there wasn't any stairs to get into the side yard so we had to climb up and through the retaining wall. We reached out to a couple of contractors to put in steps (wooden with gravel) and Monaghan's was our final choice. I'm so very happy with the work and finished product. The steps are exactly as I imagined (how many times can you say that?). I had shown them pictures of what I wanted and they matched it. Jaimie came out and gave a very fair assessment, said it could be done, so once we received the estimate from Colette, we changed a few minor things then waited for our place in line to come about. The work was done about 2 mos. prior to the estimated date, which was fantastic, and the retaining wall not only look fabulous, but is super strong and built very well. We are very happy with the communication, quality of work done. To be clear - this review is about customer service not the work itself. I just moved to Portland and called to see if I could get some help with a portion of my backyard that will no longer be under a cement slab. I wasn't really able to get a word in about what i wanted before being bombarded with all the reasons why they couldn't help me because they are so busy with other customers. I in no way needed anything urgent and still needed another crew (separate company) to come remove the cement that i have now and replace what is needed to protect my house from the coming rain - so the delay would have been just fine. I think all they heard was "replacing cement before the rain came"... and then continued to speak over me. I am not sure if the person i spoke to understood that or just wanted to continue to talk about how busy they were - but would recommend another company if you want someone that will help collaborate or at the very least listen to you. read more

What a terrific experience using Monaghan's! I had some ideas on what I wanted to do to transform my small yard and Jamie helped further define some of the details. The crew showed up on time and cleaned the site at the end of each day, and they were all incredibly talented and friendly. I recently had a retaining wall that had failed redone in stone by Monaghan's and I am quite satisfied with their work. Follow up on my request for an estimate was prompt, the price was fair (came in under budget in the end), work started and completed ahead of schedule, and when I needed some follow up touches it was promptly done at no charge. For fair balance the haul away of the demo was not complete and 1 fence post was off line and gave the fence builder a headache but I am satisfied and would have no qualms about working with them again read more

I'm a first time homebuyer and working with them was my first landscaping experience. I do not recommend this company if you are looking for someone to be a partner in your project and help you troubleshoot your yard along the way. They are extremely unprofessional and are not respectful to their clients. They did work in my backyard last summer (2020) and my budget was probably on their lower end, $12k-ish. It's been one of the most stressful, unpleasant companies I've ever worked with. I had $4,000 of trees planted initially that were struggling so I reached out and was told "not to lose sleep over it" since they were under warranty. It was a big investment so I was concerned. They replaced them after blaming me for why they died and they usually would have not done this (mind you there is a 1 year warranty and I had to follow up multiple times for care instructions). It had been less than a year and the second round was starting to die a few months ago. I wasn't going to reach out again but my current yard maintenance team said that they were incorrectly planted so had no chance and recommended in reaching out. I had no interest in working with them again on the replant but asked if there was any sort of refund or option for me to get new plants at cost. After not responding to my initial notes or photos, they showed up at my house while I was on a work call which I find incredibly intrusive and unprofessional. I had to reach out to ask what next steps were and what they thought. I was told in a very unprofessional tone that since my yard was dry and I didn't have an irrigation, they couldn't replace them. I never asked to replace the trees, I was hoping to work with them to find a solution. I had invested $4k and over a year of caring for these. The lawn comment also I found random, we all know the hot summer we had and I chose to prioritize my trees to establish and only water my lawn enough for it not to die off (something I decided with my current yard professionals). The other work they did was fine. I saw the reviews of unprofessionalism and wish I would have taken those into account. If you are hoping to have this a lasting investment and partnership with your landscaping professional, choose someone else. read more

We hired Monaghan's to replace/build a retaining wall and hardscaped steps on an very difficult property (due to steep slopes and limited street access). Many other companies had simply looked at the job and said no way, but Monaghan's took it on with no complaint. Also, of the quotes we did get, theirs was the most affordable. Jamie and Colette make a great team and balance each other well. Jamie is laid back and even keeled so hurdles and setbacks don't fluster him. Colette is intense in her approach meticulously making sure every detail is figured out, keeps the client (me) straight/punctual, and ensures the job gets done as/when planned. Our job was not an easy one and had numerous setbacks (due to bureaucratic hurdles and not any fault of Monaghan's). but they stuck it out as promised when I would have expected other companies to just walk away from the job. They spent many extra hours getting a city permit that was originally thought not to be a big issue, but turned into a mess (thanks PBOT! *insert sarcasm*). They never asked for more money though than what they originally quoted. Again, I think most other companies would. Their crew was great as well, took pride in their work, and really functioned as a team. They were very communicative with me which allowed us to guide the build to our ideal design and that was greatly appreciated. Our end goal with this was to control continual erosion on this site which was threatening our house, and what they built, I have little doubt, will stand the test of time. read more

It was rather a big project for a medium sized residential house but they tackled all corners in a very organized manner. The owner checked in with the crews every morning. Our experience with Monaghan's Landscaping was a very solid one. Our backyard consisted of grass and bark. We started with having a gravel path around the house along with four plants. We then had them do the perimeter plants and trees installed. Jamie took my simple directions of a low maintenance yard and created a visually engaging outdoor environment for us to enjoy. Our timing was such that a week after install, we experienced a record heat wave that took several of our trees and plants. They were back with replacements promptly and without issue. I was immensely happy with our new patio that we had Jamie & his crew install. The back yard was a bit of a mess, with a small 8'x10' concrete slab that my wife and I just weren't happy with. We explored several options for expanding this to a more usable space (12'x16'), and finally landed upon the budget to rip out the concrete and install a paver patio. We weren't looking for an overly fancy design, just a nice patio at a reasonable price. Monaghan's Landscaping fit that bill to a T. The experience begins, as most home renovations do, with an on-site estimate and evaluation of the site. Jamie was very flexible in scheduling this estimate, and came to do the job personally. Once he got us a written estimate, we picked our stone from his preferred vendor and were off and running. A 50% deposit was required to book the date of the job, and the entire job took 2.5 days. Day 1 was mainly ripping up the old concrete and leveling the surrounding area. Day 2 was building the base and beginning to lay the pavers. Day 3 was finishing the job, cleaning up (they workmen did a good job cleaning the outdoor area and leaving it in better shape than they found it) and leaving. Jamie came by to inspect the area and ensure we were happy with it that next day, where we paid the other 50% of the cost. The estimate was actually a little higher than the total cost, as we had a mid-job shortening of the patio from 12'x17' to 12'x16' due to the air conditioner requiring some additional clearance. That led to a return of some of the stone, and that small refund applied to our patio cost. It has been nearly 2 months now since we had this work completed, and I'm still very happy with the patio. It was a good experience, and I would definitely look to hire Monaghan's Landscaping again for any of our landscaping needs. read more

From the initial meet and greet and survey of our property I thought this was a great company. They had good references and reviews and the employee showed nothing but great manners and a true enthusiasm for his work. We understood that it would take some time to get to our property as it was the busy season when we requested. That's totally fine. The day of the work came and a big crew of workers showed up. They seemed skilled and knowledgeable of the work they were there to do. I was very disappointed with the litter left in our yard once the work was complete. Fast food wrappers and cigarette remains left behind. Not a part of the landscaping beautification I was expecting. The workers also broke (on accident) our outside hose faucet. When we explained what happen to an office staff they told us it would be taken care of. Weeks past and no one fixed it. Upon another call to the office, a scheduled appointment from someone higher in the company was made. The facet handle was replaced but not all of the broken parts were fixed. My water bill has since doubled and we were told no other visits would be made. The work done on our patio looks great. Can't say I would recommend them though. Update: August 27. The owner of this business messaged me asking me to take this review down for fear it would hurt future business. After many messages back and forth no progress was made.
