Worth Looking For, in the artistic community and across from the book mural on the Library. We were there near opening, but breakfast and lunch were both on the menu. Since we got up at 2 am in Seattle, it was lunch. I had a savory crepe with field greens salad, the salad was other worldly fresh, and the crepe stuffed and delicious. Partner chose curried carrot soup and the roast chicken sandwich with rosemary aoli on beautiful rich whole grain Red Fife miche.bread, again fabulous. My double short Cap was on point, and I'm a coffee snob. Our server was low key, polite, and very helpful. My Cappicino came out immediately, the food followed before it was half gone. The nainimo bar is in the cooler, as I'm "still stuck on" the pecan bar. Like pecan pie in a hand pie. Yum! Book It !

A cute brunch and lunch cafe in downtown Nanaimo with vegetarian and meat options. The portion of the food was good and the price was reasonable! My favourite was their french onion soup which was cheesy and super flavourful. Their prosciutto pesto sandwich was also really good

Great little place! Very inviting; fun decor! Fun blue seats combined with a rustic/brown theme makes you feel at home and at ease while trying to figure out what to eat. There are baked goods for those who do not want to order of the menu. We thought their menu had some really great options. We loved our breakfast! The scrambled eggs were fantastic; just how I love it - smooth, creamy and velvety. Baguette was fresh but I wish it had more butter! Can't go wrong with more butter! Service was great - such a gentle staff who had a lovely charm. We paid about $38 for two plates of food, 2 coffee and 15% tip!

We came here for brunch as my friend wanted eggs. The decor is supposed to be french style though it did not feel that way to me. There are two parts to the dining area. Street level and down some stairs to get to the main dining area. It also opens out to the tiny outdoor dining (2 tables). There are also a couple of stairs to get to the counter for payment. If you have stroller or in a wheelchair, it is still accessible as there are tables available at the street level dining area. Staff can also help you with payment so that you do not need to go to the counter. I think the layout is due to it being in a older building. Food is delicious. I like my eggs Benny which has croissant instead English muffin as the base. I requested for runny yolks and the chef did it. Eggs were perfectly poached with no vinegary taste. The potatoes were nicely seasoned and the slice of watermelon was great for the hot weather. Ask for the ketchup. It was sooooooo good! House made. I think the hot sauce is house made too. I regretted not saying yes when the server asked if I wanted it. My friend enjoyed the smoked salmon on scrambled eggs. The server mentioned it was a popular item. Cappuccino was good too.

This place has a pretty nice hipster vibe but the service was definitely lacking. The food was alright otherwise. We ordered a French toast ($9) which was alright. The whole thing came doused in syrup which made the toast soggier than I'd like. The fruits made the plate refreshing though. We also ordered the ham and cheese croissant ($6.75). I liked the croissant, and that the cheese was nicely melted into the pastry. I'd say it was alright - a simple and satisfying delight, perhaps. Now, the service... our waitress was not very good at all. She forgot our beverage order except for my coffee, but when I asked her for my refill, she completely forgot about that too - especially when she did not look that busy. When it came time to settle our bill, it turns out she did not include a bunch of our items, which created some havoc and confusion at the register. All said, I would not be returning, but I see the appeal of this place if you are looking for something hipster.

This little cafe in Nanaimo uses all organic ingredients and everything is made from scratch. The pastries were the star of the show for sure. The Nanaimo bar was very hefty and perfectly constructed. We also got a few of their pastries that were lovely and flakey. The lunch was also great - perfectly cooked eggs and an interesting take on my favorite breakfast item - eggs benny! Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I'll be back next time I'm on the island!

The food tasted fresh and very tasty but portions so small for the French toast that I had to order more food as I was still quite hungry. I did request a substitution for the 2 fried eggs to be exchanged for hash browns. I was only given 1 very flat hash brown, it ended up being 4 small bites, which I didn't feel was a fair exchange for 2 eggs. At least 3 of those flat hash browns could equal 2 eggs. So if you order a substitution, make sure it's a fair exchange ahead of time. Having those 2 fried eggs on top of 1 piece of French toast might be filling enough but either give 3 of those flat hash browns or 2 proper pieces of French toast with one hash brown for a filling enough portion. The chicken pot pie was mostly gravy, very little veggies & meat. The salad that was with the pot pie was super boring. The 2 puff pastries were difficult and messy to cut. Again, it was all tasty, just not balanced. Service was slow and and not once did our waters get refilled in our 2 hour visit. The waitress had a detached demeanour and was uncomfortable to talk with. I have allergies and asked a couple questions about ingredients and felt scowled at with a negative attitude with the responses. The atmosphere was so-so and temperature was way too chilly to feel relaxed and comfortable. We had coffee after and they didn't understand what a proper long pour should be but the mocha coffee was acceptable and would order it again. The chocolate croissant had barely any chocolate inside and was too dense but still tasty.

We ordered this for our son

Nice bakery. Good service. Latte was a bit better than average. I would certainly go back.

Friendly and helpful staff. The chicken pot pie is not. It's a small bowl of soup with a salad.

When we visited on a rainy Monday afternoon and there were a couple of people inside, sipping on coffee and working. Traditional Nanaimo ($5.99) - This Nanaimo Bar is very thin, about half the height as compared to Bar 1. It shears while cutting, causing pieces to break off in chunks rather than cleaning going through. This happens to both the icing in the middle and the top and I'm not sure what causes it. The top layer has a nice rich chocolatety taste. The bottom layer has finer coconut shreds and a nice cocoa flavor, mixed with crushed silvered almonds for nuttiness and crunch. The layer is able to easily shatter. It's dry and almost powdery in texture. The middle icing isn't that noteworthy other than being sweet. As a whole, the bar is hefty, hard and very dense. It's very sweet. (3/5) Salted Caramel Nanaimo ($5.99) - This is similar in texture to the traditional with the same shattering grittiness. The middle layer is caramel icing and top layer has some flaky salt sprinkled on top. Otherwise again it's very sweet and crumbly. (3/5) I can't say I was a huge fan of these Nanaimo bars. They are definitely higher quality than the last bakery we visited, but they are a bit too dry, gritty, and powdery for my tastes. Based on my enjoyment of the food, I would normally give Bocca Cafe a 3 star rating, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and raise them to a 4, especially because the employees were very nice. Maybe i just don't like Nanaimo bars that much! Washrooms - One unisex room.

I ordered a Matcha Latte and my boyfriend got a Dirty Chai Latte, which were both tasty and came in large mugs. We also ordered a Caramel Brownie to share. I heard from multiple sources that Red's Bakery serves the most mediocre Nanaimo Bars in Nanaimo,…read morebut since we were in the area (and a couple of other places were closed the day we were in town), we decided to walk on over. Red's has a kind of small town bakery feel, with old-fashioned almost eclectic decor, perhaps 60s/70s retro. Unlike some of the other bakeries, they prepackage some of their desserts in plastic, so it's difficult to tell how fresh they are. I suppose Nanaimo Bars keep well in the first place. We ended up trying Nanaimo bars from three different places, with my notes for Red's as below: Nanaimo Bar ($6) - This Nanaimo bar is much taller than the other two, probably around 50% taller than bar 3 and a full double of bar 2. It cuts very smoothly without much flaking off. The crumb base underneath is smooth, indicating that the coconut fibers are well blended to reduce strand length. It's almost like an Oreo base, with heavy Dutch processed cocoa flavor. There should be nuts mixed in, but they are crushed so finely that I can't really tell what nut is used. People on social media complain about the bottom layer, but I actually love it. For the other layers, the top icing is really sweet. It has a heavily roasted chocolate flavor and by far the darkest in color. The middle layer just tastes like standard icing. It's sweet but I think less so than the other bars. (4/5) Interestingly enough, I enjoyed the Nanaimo Bar from Red's more than both other bakeries. I think it's pretty good in quality and while sweet, has the heavy cocoa elements of the cookie base to help balance things out a bit. Washroom - I didn't see any available for customers.
