It is what it is. New England style chinese food. Yes, you get what amounts to a standard, white bread, almost hamburger bun-ish roll when you sit down. A little bowl of "duck sauce" and mustard sauce will probably go with whatever you're going to order, right? I ordered a Szechuan pork dish that was heavy on the red and green bell peppers, yet despite the "one red pepper" next to it on the menu, had zero chili heat. None. I asked for additional chili paste and was able to make it serviceable, but the pork itself was not as tender as I'd like on top of being under seasoned. You can certainly go the sodium-bomb fried rice route. A drink from the bar that should've featured fresh lime juice was overly sweet, but strong enough so that I really didn't mind. :) read more

Mon Kou is one of those places that as a kid your parents brought you too, you grew up tasting it and because of that... that's where teh bar is set. My boyfriend swears upside down and sideways that it's the best in the area.. i on the other hand am not that impressed. The food is pretty standard for Chineese in the area. Prices for this establishment are right on point with their competition so in that respect i'd say they're reasonable. We order takeout by showing up there and putting an order in, grabbing a drink at the bar, then by the time our drinks are done the food is ready. So i'd say they're pretty quick on delivery in that respect as well. The drinks are pretty good. We normally split a scorpion bowl (hey it's a Chineese restaurant so when in rome people lol). THe thing i don't like about this place... the decorations are super tacky. It's suppose to mimick a jungle. We've sat down to eat here twice... both HORRIFIC experiences. Both times are waitors were awful, extremely rude and quite honestly didn't really care about customer service. The second time we ate here was the absolute worst experience i've ever had a restaurant. I don't know if there was an issue with their septic system or if someone shit all over the bathroom but in the dining room the stench was so potent that i swear you could taste it. Needless to say... you definately lost your appetite after about 5 minutes. The waitors just acted like everything was fine and kept going as business as usual. We complained but nothing was done ... no apology was given.. like i said business as usual. I'd hope at this point the septic issue has been resolved but it definately put a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended) about the place. If they're establishment smells that bad and they're still serving food.. makes me not even want to think about what the kitchen looks/smells like... and if nothing was done to make the customer happy or apologize or move their seats... then clearly their level of customer service is lacking. My boyfriend had been singing this spots praises for as long as I've known him, so I was excited to finally be able to try it. I love Hawaiian/Polynesian decor, so the tiki wall at the entrance was right up my ally. Some may feel the murals and bubble walls were a little bit tacky, but I think it they set the mood appropriately. Our table of 4 shared a Pu Pu platter, lo mein, fried rice, and crab Rangoon. It was definitely not the best Chinese food I've ever had, but it was tasty (especially the Rangoon and the teriyaki skewers on the platter - and bonus points for the fiery presentation.). Of course, no visit to a tiki bar is truly complete without a tropical beverage, so we shared a tasty scorpion bowl. I ordered a Jim Beam and Coke when I got there. What I recieved was a cheap whiskey heavily poured into water with a light syrup mix. No carbonation left at all. My girlfriend ordered a mudslide. But, where there were lights you could see that it was pretty filthy. I bet the health inspector reports from back then would be a pretty fun read. I miss the old cheesy jungle cave decor. But in reality, LIVE cockroaches used to be part of that decor. Food: It's East Coast Chinese. If you don't know what that is you should try it. For upscale diners you might say it's awful. There's a lot of goop and sugary sweet sauces, and questionable meat byproducts. Drinks: Tiki. FUN! Moderately priced, and WEAK! They are really stingy cheap with the alcohol. I came here 2 times this week, admittedly because it was just about the only place open late night (big plus) for the holidays. That being said, I enjoyed their Suffering bastards (mini scorpion bowls) and their actual scorpion bowls for 2. The decor is a bit cheesy and there's a lot of it. Read- "paintings" and "palm trees" with lights are throughout the restaurant. But I like it, it's just cheesy enough without over-doing it. The waitresses/host/esses are very attentive and service is prompt. The food doesn't blow me away, but the prices and portions are decent. I'll be coming back when the mood so suits me. :D read more

Im totaly a bar patron here, never have I sat and ate in the dining room. But in the bar, full menu and I love it. Its good, espeacialy after a few fogcutters. Standard Chinese food in a 70's Polynesian atmosphere. The interior decor is so tacky but fun! I like it. They also start you off with dinner rolls and tea, which is super cute, and set you up with a bunch of sauces for your food before you even order. A lot of the food was pretty average. The Pu-Pu Platter was pretty standard - everything good but not amazing. However, their crab rangoons are totally done right and probably some of the best around. We also really liked the salt "hot" wings, although they could have definitely been a lot spicier. Everything is served in huge portions for a fair price. No huge complains about the food. The service was okay but seemed a little off. The guy was very nice but I think there was a language/cultural barrier or something, and it seemed like he was very scripted and acted a bit over-the-top. He had a hard time understanding what we were ordering and had to repeat ourselves a few times. He brought things we didn't ask for and never brought out the Singapore spicy noodles that I ordered ( I was full from all of the appetizers by the time I realized it was never coming, so I didn't bother to ask for them). Dont go to this place. Food was decent, but the service was horrible. We had an older lady as our server and she barely greeted us and gave us attitude because she had to get up to serve us. She failed to check on us and was sitting with no drink for 15 minutes. My partner and I asked for refills and she came back asking us for boxes we proceeded to say no because we were still working on our meal. One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. For starters our waitress was the worst. Every time we needed something she would disappear causing me to have to find her only to see her texting on her phone giggling. This happened more than once in the same night. Next, the food was horrendous. First things wrong was when we ordered the food at say 5:00pm and it was brought out to us at 5:03pm. NO food should be brought out in 3 minutes. Either it was someone else's food or you have a horse trough back there with food cooked last week under heat lamps. Next, my wife's meal (pad Thai) was crunchy in some spots and soggy in others. When I asked the crappy waitress about this she said almost automatically "what did you expect?" as if we should've known the food sucks. She then said it's supposed to be crunchy to which I replied "then why is it soggy?"...she had no answer. The ambiance is decent for a chinese restaurant, but the food is beyond awful. For my entree I ordered the shrimp lo mein and my boyfriend ordered the General Gau's chicken combo. Lo mein was bland, not enough noodles and just overall dissatisfying. My boyfriends rice was dry and so was the pork. The general sauce had barely any flavor as well. Went in here for lunch a few weeks ago. I agree, inside is delightfully tacky. It's decorated to look like the jungle in South East Asia or Polynesia. Our waiter was super fast. Servings were large (and cheap since we ordered off the lunch menu). Fried rice was a little well done and waaay too salty- it seemed as though the person who prepared it meant to sprinkle it with salt but the cap had come off of the shaker accidentally or something. Really disappointed! Have been to this restaurant many, many times over the years. Got take-out this weekend & boy, things have really changed! The portions have gotten SO SMALL!!! The egg rolls are about a quarter of the size they've always been; they are now the size of a spring roll. They are now using flat, plastic containers rather than the typical white, cardboard containers that take-out is typically served in. This results in a much smaller serving size. Can't help it - I love old school Polynesian-themed joints. It is basically everything you can imagine when you think American-Polynesian: low-lit dining areas, artificial waterfalls, bamboo panels, tropical colors and myriad tikis throughout the restaurant. As for the food and food choices, my only criticism is the amount of choices as there are way too many. Be warned - if you want authentic Chinese food (ie dim sum) do not come to Mon Kou! However if you like your Chinese food cooked with that classic American-Polynesian twist, this is the place for you. Definitely stop in for a drink and sample their appetizer menu. Convenient Location Rt1 just over the RI / MASS Border. It is a Chinese / Polynesian Restaurant so it has some of the traditional foods you would expect and some you may have not seen before. I don't eat pork, I asked for no pork and when I asked for no ham it was there and then brought back with roasted pork and was told I thought you didn't want ham, I said I don't eat pork.
