We were visiting friends that lived in the area and booked a reservation for dinner here. We have been here a couple of times, decades ago. It's a large Chinese restaurant with your typical Chinese Polynesian fare. There was a fountain in the lobby area and the people working there were friendly. My husband got a scorpion bowl to share and it was good, a nostalgic drink. For food, I opted for the appetizer combo which came with chicken wings, crab rangoons, fried rice, and boneless spare ribs. They no longer allow you to purchase a combination plate of chicken fingers with rice, so you are forced to order separately. $24 for chicken fingers and a small order of rice. Sat there with my husband in the lounge for over 20 minutes with menus down after drinks were served...only 1 other table in restaurant, with 5 regulars at the bar watching Olympic curling with the owner behind the bar, seeing us, but not doing anything to help... Finally, the waitress takes our order... Sat there for 20 more minutes without food before walking out (dropping a $20 for our drink)...Over an hour spent on a dead Sunday afternoon without food... My husband and I decided to go here off the whim because we were in the area. It was a late night so there weren't many there. The ambiance was beautiful. The woman who served us was super friendly. We ended up ordering chicken wings, Singapore noodles, salt and pepper shrimp. They were all okay, not bad enough for us to come back. Oops, we did it again... another Chinese American place... Heavy on the American is the staff here which was largely American. The food is the usual faire with PuPu Pladders and Crab Rangoon (colloquially known as " 'Goons") and Sub Gums and Goo-Goo Sauces and Double Ding Four Happiness with Erotic Sauce and various Moo Goo Kow Pangs, etc. -all the usual stuff... Most prominent though is the decor which was quite wild with murals and landscape vignettes and modern wall fountains and tiki masks and more. Very fun and and some serious yen was invested in these visual delights. Our gang ordered drinks to kick it off. Jefferson got the Melon Delight and I had a Headhunter and Moey got the Mai Tai. They were all tasty and of average strength and well presented in fun glasses with garnish. The Mai Tai however was more of a "Meh Tai" in that it really didn't seem like a Mai Tai as these drinks wildly vary in contents from place to place. It wasn't janky or anything, but it just seemed kinda off-base. Tams ordered a pop since she is a tee-toddler. The waitress was wicked nice and very competent. We all split the PuPu Pladder for two. It was 50 bucks though (yikes!) but was quite large and was enough for the four of us when in situ with the HFR. The House Fried Rice was hot and appeared freshly made (or expertly reheated?) and the Pladder was of questionable freshness but was quite edible and had the Stern-O fire happening. BTW, I am amazed at how many peeps don't realize that the flame is not there solely for fun and looks. Its true purpose to heat up your food wicked hot as you go. I am a Level 3 heavy user of the flame and heat my victuals to the max. You can hold it over the flame via BBQ stick or place on the grill grate as a mini grill. Just an FYI. NOTE: I thought it was kinda weird that their PuPu Pladder does not come with 'Goons. It's like, Hello, McFly? I mean 'Goons are kinda du rigueur with PuPu Pladders, right? It then dawned on me that this is just another way to "get ya" in that you are kinda railroaded into paying extra for something... and we did... The 'Goons were OK -not the best but not certainly the worst -let's just say that they took care of business adequately... I cannot fully comment on anything else foodwise because this was all we got. However, I did notice that the Hot n' Sour Soup contained Woodear 'Shrooms -a big plus as most places now use those ubiquitous Pennsylvanian Ghetto 'Shrooms as a cheap substitute which is no bueno not mention unauthentic AF. It was a gas hanging in the place as it is a phun place to hang as it is highly Festivus. We hung there for quite some time as its open wicked late. This joint also can double as a sports "bah" as there are big-ass TVs all over the place with sports on 'em. The dood making the drinks was a machine and was mixing toddies non-stop all night with robotic prowess. I'd say peep out this place. I ate at this restaurant on January 22, 2021. The atmosphere of the restaurant is of a Polynesian flare. It's fitting for the cuisine. I ordered the pork chow mein combination plate, which was served with an egg roll, pork fried rice, and 3 boneless chicken fingers; this plate cost $12.25. I asked for the chow mein to be cooked Chicago style and the restaurant gladly obliged -- they did charge a .50 cent fee for doing so. The combination plate came with generous portions and was cooked perfectly. The fried rice had a nice dark color and was flavorful. If you've ever eaten fried rice, you know that the lighter the fried rice, oftentimes this is a bad sign. The egg roll was crispy, but not over cooked and contained vegetables and pork. The Chicago style chow mein was nice and thick, and had good color. Lastly, the chicken fingers had a good battered taste, and were golden brown. Our server was attentive and very personable. This place could be so charming and fun, with the tiki lounge vibes. I mean, that sort of thing is kind of outmoded and outdated now--but it would still be an experience. Instead it seems they've leaned into the bar part and left the rest to go bad like yesterdays hot and sour soup. We had several dishes and all were really poor. Two dishes had chicken, and both preparations were just big chunks of over cooked and not seasoned white meat. None of the sauces really tasted of anything other than salt, and everything just seemed kind of old. The saving grace could have been the service, as our server was definitely trying to be nice. But she ended up making a series of really off-color jokes in front of our kid before misgendering them. It was just really unfortunate. No disrespect to her. She worked hard and was trying, just misguided. I literally only came here because the place up the street was too packed for the pay per view boxing match and nowhere else was serving food at midnight. I did come here years ago and it wasn't that good, so I wasn't expecting much, but that was almost 10 years back, so I had to give it another try before I completely write it off. Everything I ordered was delicious, cooked perfectly and great portion sizes. Just so good! I'm guessing by the reviews I read prior to coming here it almost looked like this place is only good during certain days of the week or when a certain cook is in the kitchen, but if that's the case when I want good Chinese food I'll come here again on a Saturday. Picked up an order of wings on bone and an order of ribs on bone. This was throw out food. Looked like both the wings and ribs were gathered from leftovers of someone else's meal and dropped in stale oil just to heat up. They were burnt, super dry and end scraps. I really wanted to go back and show them what they gave me, but it was already 9:45 and I knew I wouldn't make it before closing. I tried to call but the recording answered stating they were closed and it wasn't 10:00 yet. All around, this was the worst food, fit for discarding not serving to customer. Shame on you Mon Kou. Hello. Well, I've been going here for decades and it took a while to find a dish that works for me. Other than our standards (Peking fried dumplings, fried chicken wings and crab Rangoon), the entrée I get is Singapore style rice noodle and perhaps egg foo young. The house fried rice is a must! I've read the past reviews which are very mixed. I go here partly from tradition, and cheaper than usual drinks, and for the dishes I just mentioned. The service is always/usually good....food comes fast! Bailey, the owner, does a good job and puts a lot back into his restaurant! We were in the mood for Chinese food for lunch, so figured we'd give them a try. We are well aware of the poor quality of food in the area. The Mon Kou while face lifted outside, has a 70's decor inside. We looked at the luncheon menu, and quickly noticed the high prices. No soup, maybe 1 ap with the lunch specials. Our server brought plates an ominous beginning because one plate we had to send back because it was really dirty with some sticky brown stuff on it. Our server was very good, we told her we would need more time. We chose a small ap assortment, fried rice, Moo Shi pork, and General Gau's chicken. The ap came first, chicken fingers were ok, teriyaki..meh, and the worst egg roll we've ever had. Clearly frozen and reheated. the other dishes came and were all cold. The moo Shi pancakes were brittle, obviously freezer burned and useless. The moo shi was ok. the General's chicken was ok, but cold. The fried rice was horrible, dark, reheated and again cold. So...it was 62.00 (+tip) for a cold lunch here. Should have driven the extra miles to Quan's, or the place in Attleboro center across from the hot dog place. Both those places are great with hot food made with love just for us. And 1/2 the $$$, too. Mon kou is what I'd call a drive-by, they don't care about the food quality. Updated review, 6 years later. Grabbed some takeout due to Mon Kou being the only place open. I wish I would have gone to McDonald's. Pupu platter for two is $25. Are they out of their freaking mind... and it was garbage. The chicken fingers were hard as a rock, the eggrolls tasted like play dough, the beef was dry. The rice was bland, even after putting sauce on it. The only good part of the meal was the side of baked salt hot wings, the wings that came with the pupu were dry and unseasoned.
