Daikon Salad
David M.

I would say Momo no Hana is one of the better Japanese restaurants in the Phoenix Metro area. It's a small quaint restaurant, the outskirts of Phoenix. They offer a wide selection of Japanese dishes and have a wonderful staff. I opted to order many side dishes and Nigiri for one person: Soft Shell Crab: pretty good, lightly fried and juicy crab **Daikon Salad: a must-have, this dish brings a fresh, light flavor to the table Unagi: regular unagi Karaage: an incredible disappointment...it's just balls of chicken that look like they came from a frozen package If you're in the area, I recommend checking it out.

This is a small, quiescent spot in an unassuming strip mall. They don't take reservations which I assume is because the place has such limited seating to begin with. They have lunch specials which really isn't that big of a discount considering it's still a $16 bento box. The nice thing about this "special" is that it gives you a wide variety of items to choose from to go with your rice and salad. It doesn't even come with miso soup like other places; it costs an extra $2 for that. I tried out their chicken cutlet and tuna roll. The tuna roll wasn't that great and although the chicken cutlet was good, the sauce they poured all over it wasn't of good quality. The bento box comes with a lot of rice. The salad was tasty. I'd avoid appetizers as they give you so little for its price. Service was attentive and amiable.

Well it has been a few months since I have had an opportunity to visit this authentic Japanese restaurant. They surprised me this week with a unique dish call Torikawa Gyoza!!!! Basically instead of dumpling dough the chef uses chicken skin to wrap the dumplings and deep fry it. New this week and if you get the chance you have to get it!!!

Shrimp tempura roll. Very small for the price.

When I went I had ordered a tempura shrimp roll, which was pretty pricey at $10 considering it was only a 6pc roll for something that wasn't so spectacular. Also, I ordered a teriyaki chicken donburi rice bowl which was $13. Which also wasn't so spectacular. To top everything off as I received my order I asked if I could have an extra side of teriyaki for my rice bowl. They expressed to me that they could add it on top of my bowl for me instead of just on the side. I said no thank you and the cashier went back to the kitchen and I could hear multiple employees laughing at me. She said she was asking the owner which means they were also laughing so I will not be coming back here. Do not recommend this place.

Food was great!!!! Pleasant staff. Normal prices for excellent Japanese cuisine. Small place with limited seating and it filled up soon after we arrived. I will be back!!

Delicious food!! We were skeptical because it was a TINY placed tucked into the corner of a strip mall but so glad we gave it a try! Definitely worth it!!

Wheat balls with octopus center

With fair pricing, diverse menu, and authentic interior, this corner of the parking lot feels like a corner of Japan in the heart of Apache Junction. I can confidently reccomend this place for any item outside of their sushi (it was ok but- not anything to drive here for.) Push your pallet without pushing your wallet, this authentic Japanese comfort/bar food beat out others I've tasted in Mesa/Chandler/Tempe easily. Remember to tip your wait staff well, they're hard working and have genuinely amazing advice for what to try next!

Very good food and service, a great experience. Looking forward to coming back. (Is it 85 characters yet? Those minimum requirements, sigh)

Was good food and good service. Very busy place and although packed wasn't too noisy, and was able to hear my comrades speak.

Food was decent but not as flavorful as I expected from online reviews or as large as of a portion as I would have expected for what I paid.

The noodles were great texture, the broth was super flavorful, and the sides were quite nice. I've been thinking about this meal every day since. It is a small spot, almost looks closed from the outside. There was just one server who appears to be the owner, and he was very nice and attentive. He checked in to make sure we knew how to eat the noodles properly and gently let us know when the kitchen and restaurant were closing. The croquettes were very nice, and I normally am not a huge fan of takoyaki but the octopus texture in these was nice and soft. There was not too much octopus in them though, so if that's important to you... :( Would definitely come back and probably order the exact same thing...

He sat us down (choose your own seats). It's simple decor. But inviting. Very clean. I ordered the Tenzaru soba. It is buckwheat noodles served cold with a dipping sauce and a generous amount of shrimp and veggie tempura. The tempura was vey hot and crispy coating. They also gave us 2 gyoza and a breaded chicken on a skewer with a drizzle of Teri sauce. I enjoyed all of it. Hubby had Tempura udon. The tempura was served on the side so as not to get soggy in the udon. The broth had a good umami flavor. Noodles are thick and just right. We also ordered shrimp tempura roll, it comes with Japanese mayo on top, which we told them to not add it. Tempura was hot. It was rolled with slivers of fresh cucumber. We enjoyed and ordered another roll. All and all the flavors are authentic Japanese cooking. By the time we were done. The place did fill up. I was glad to see that. Lots of parking as it is surrounded office buildings and a pickle/fitness center.

We both settled on the Bento Combination. You get to pick one item from each of the three categories (Sashimi, Sushi, and A la Carte). I selected the Sashimi - Maguro, Sushi - Spicy Hamachi, and À la carte - Chicken Katsu. My wife selected the Sashimi - Hamachi, Sushi - California Roll, and À la carte - Chicken Teriyaki. A delicious Miso soup accompanied the Bento Box, not too salty or heavy feeling. Our Bento Boxes came out relatively quick, the presentation was excellent, every item was fresh (sashimi melted in our mouths), and perfectly prepared. The portions were perfect (no leftovers and we didn't walk away hungry). The service was exactly as I had imagined it should be, welcoming, attentive, and courteous. Overall, I highly recommend Sushi Sen for the quality, service, and ambiance. Notes/Tips: you could easily miss this location as the only indication of its location is a sign posted high above on an archway (see one of my photos). Another well known dining venue is right next door, the "Alma" to help you with location. Parking is free and plentiful. The walk from the parking lot to the entrance is not too far.

My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this stand at Uptown Market a couple weeks ago, and were so impressed by the 50/50. The dish is half curry -- deliciously thick and made from scratch -- and half lu rou fan, which includes the softest, flavorful pork belly. It also includes a few delicious pickled cucumbers and a perfectly jammy marinated egg. Lao gan ma always available to top!! The owner, Jonny, is so welcoming and enthusiastic. He was so happy to have us sample his unique drinks (a frozen thai tea and a lychee lemonade with jellies), and we were so thrilled to honestly say they were delicious! The thai tea flavor was really strong and aromatic. The price is super fair for how much you get. Our dish was packed to the brim, and they really don't skimp on the pork belly. Relatively quaint, but still ample seating, we were able to walk in and get a table no problem on a Tuesday evening. I went with the spicy miso ramen with chicken, and added a soft boil egg. I was not disappointed! The broth was super flavorful, perfectly spiced, ample protein and overall portion and perfectly cooked egg. I left full and still had leftovers! My friend got their veggie ramen, which she did enjoy, it was a bit thicker of a broth, but had good flavor. We ended the meal with their matcha tiramisu, which was very light, almost more whip cream style, but equally delicious. Service was friendly and fast. The prices were really reasonable and overall it was an enjoyable experience! Unfortunately, I visited today for the first time in a while and left feeling really disappointed, it's changed, and not for the better. I always order the Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen (no meat, replace with egg, extra egg, add corn and cabbage). I was surprised to be told they no longer offer cabbage, which was one of my favorite additions. The eggs were also different. They used to be served whole, and I loved slicing into them to reveal that beautiful golden yolk. This time they arrived already sliced, and once the broth was added, the yolks started to cook. I was also given a side of arugula, which honestly has no place in a ramen bowl. It felt very out of place. There were also pickled carrots, which I ended up removing, not for me. The broth was noticeably greasier than before, which was another letdown. I immediately texted my best friend (the one who originally introduced me to this place) and she shared the same thoughts. She even mentioned telling her server, "Don't mess with a good thing," and that really sums it up. I'm truly sad to say this experience left me very disappointed, and I may have to start looking for a new ramen spot. WHHHHHHYYYYYYY

The edamame was salted well throughout where a lot of places just put the salt on top only. We ordered a couple varieties of sake which were both good. Out of all of the things we ordered the karange skewer was just a little more oily than were use to, but still good. The spicy salmon roll had really great flavor and the lollipop roll was probably one of the better versions that we have had. I love Japanese food so my decision was made. I drove over and parked in their complimentary lot. Ambiance (3.5/5): I've been to Japan and there are plenty of izakayas there. Think of them as small bars which often serve solid food. Zu fits that bit. It's a relatively small restaurant, probably seats about 30 people. and it's pretty no frills for a Japanese spot. I was seated at a booth in the corner of the restaurant. They have free WiFi which is always a good touch. Service (3/5): Service was friendly, though a bit inconsistent. My waitress wasn't as attentive as I would have liked. The type of service where you have to flag them down to get what you want and to close out. Drinks (4/5): Zu has a nice menu of Japanese and Korean beverages, including sake, soju, Japanese beer, and more. With that being said, I just had an iced green tea. Food (4/5): I got a nice variety. I went with the Japanese sausage off of the grill menu, the OBI mayo roll off of the sushi menu, and the cheese corn off of the appetizer menu. Let's start with the sausage. It's a small item, two small sausages, but absolutely delicious. The sausage was bursting with flavor and basted in a sweet sauce. Minus the portion size, perfection. The cheese corn also hit the spot, but the execution was off. The corn is served on a hot platter, and unfortunately some of the corn on the edges was badly burnt. The type of situation where they should start over. Which they didn't. Lastly, the OBI mayo roll is essentially a California roll with marinated warm shrimp on top in a mayo sauce. I didn't love the hot and cold combo (shrimp and sushi), but outside of the temperature, it was a delicious roll. All in all, a very food meal. My only gripe with Japanese food is that it can get expensive quick. Given that Zu is in Tempe, I was hoping that prices would be a little cheaper. With that being said, they do have a solid happy hour (and reverse happy hour) with both food and drink specials. Next time I stop by, I'd like to check out some of their Korean options. I focused on the Japanese stuff this time (which makes the majority of the menu). Next time around, the bulgogi is calling my name!
