Absolutely the best vegan option on the island. Not only is the food delicious, they are leading the way in sustainability.

This is the best vegan restaurant my wife and I have been too bar none. I am vegan and she is not. We went to Maui and visited a few different vegan places as we do when traveling; this by far is the greatest of all time. The only other vegan restaurant we have been to that holds a candle is Wild Cow in Nashville, TN. We tried multiple items and all were delicious; taro burger especially. :) read more

Hands down my favorite restaurant on Maui. They have so many delicious menu staples and daily specials that my only complaint is it's difficult to decide what I want to eat! I'm vegan but my husband is a carnivore, he will happily eat at Moku Roots with me (his favorite is the meat loaf). AMAZING I came here with my family on a vacation. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. As a vegetarian, I loved not having to worry about what I ordered. Furthermore, I generally enjoy vegan food, but still prefer vegetarian options. This was one of the few anomalies, and the food was amazing. The vegan substitutes for foods, such as cheese, did not taste like substitutes, but instead tasted like premium versions. I also enjoyed their green initiative. Would gladly eat here again. We are not vegetarians but I needed to find some gluten free food. I convinced the family to try this place based on the Yelp reviews. They serve only their brunch menu on Sunday and I asked what I could have that was gluten free. There were three options to choose from: the omelette, tofu scramble, or taro burger without the bun. I chose the taro burger with avocado for an additional $2. The texture of the taro burger took a little getting used to but it was flavorful and very filling. I topped this off with a cold brew with Mac nut milk and splash of chai. The son got a breakfast burrito. He was full after eating half of it. I ate some of his potatoes. Daughter has the taro burger with the you naan bread. She liked it but couldn't finish it. The hubby had the omelette and the rest of son and daughter's food. We really enjoy our meat, but this was a nice change of pace and since they had gluten free options it was a bonus for me. We also had the lavender lemonade and lilikoi lemonade. Drinks were yummy but a little pricey. Overall our lunch cost was $69. Friendly service and nice atmosphere. Will try to return again while we are here to try their regular menu. read more

This is a must try place for vegetarians! We ordered taro burger, falafel wrap and mango crema (desert). Everything was very good. I highly recommend the falafel wrap where the falafel is made from yuca and not chick pea and contains delicious dill sauce. The staff was very courteous and everyone seem to be enjoying their work! The best vegan restaurant I've been to in my life!! The food and cocktails were incredible. I wanted to go there every day just to try everything on the menu. It's a plant-based paradise in paradise!! Food that makes you feel good served by an environmentally conscious restaurant. A few coworkers of mine kept raving about this place so I decided to check it out. The menu is pretty creative. The staff was nice and helpful. Only con really if I had to choose one is the prices, but I get it they use good ingredients. I ordered the the taro burger which was in the specials. I don't remember the name of it. A fantastic place for vegetarian and vegan food! It's surprisingly hard to find options here in Maui so we were excited to discover this place just a few miles from where we are staying. The cauliflower "wings" are fantastic - but spicy! The hummus is delicious, as was the taro burger. And the Reuben was a great twist on the classic, which is one of the few things I miss as a former carnivore. (See photo). The first time we tried this place it was jamming busy and quite impressive! We brought our adult kids with us and we ordered incredibly great menu items. I had the buffalo Cauliflower burrito which was delicious, and their butternut squash soup (also tasty and hot), my hubby and son had the meatloaf sandwhich (also very very good). We also ordered elixir that was yummy. The service for being busy was good. My son's girlfriend got self serve water for us that came in a jar and the jar did not appear clean. It was oily to the touch. Didn't mention it--maybe just a fluke. Our 2nd time in after a few days, hardly anyone was in the place. There was a couple and a single lady before us that already ordered. This time we ordered the poke bowl with brown rice--very tasty. My hubby ordered the kale avocado salad--after asking for salt it was good, otherwise it had no seasoning whatsoever. Also, what was a turn off was that it took more than 30 mins to get our food. Part of the 30 mins, it stood on the counter waiting to be served to us (I watched the chef put it on the counter). It was literally sitting on the counter while the waitstaff talked to a friend who came in. One of the waitstaff (maybe management) walked around from counter and hugged and talked to the friend for at least 10 mins. And the clincher was when she was finally done visiting, she was the one who brought our food out to us that has been sitting on the counter. Finally, I got the glasses for water this time and they look and feel dirty. It was greasy to the touch with some bits of particles. This is the reason for the low review and I'm very disappointed that I had to give it a low review. I hope that this review is read with an eye to make improvements. I don't like giving low reviews when restaurants have so much more potential. We won't return here for the rest our our visit in Maui. Maybe we will give it it try again when we return in August. Hopefully, others will have a better experience. read more

Aw man I really wanted to like this place. I am on Maui a lot for work and I was hoping to find a new vegetarian/locally oriented place to frequent, and I loved the zero waste efforts. However the customer service here is so off-putting that I'll keep driving next time. The cashier was texting when I came in, she did look up at me but no smile, no hello. I felt like I was inconveniencing her just trying to place an order, and when I waited for my receipt (and I selected "print receipt" on the POS) she snootily asked if I was waiting for it and I could feel the disdain she had having to interact with me a nanosecond more. As I ate, the whole staff gave off a "we're too cool for you" vibe, instead of the local, down to earth atmosphere I was expecting. My daughter found this place, while looking for a vegan/ vegetarian restaurant, we ended up driving 45 minutes from Kihei side and it was worth the drive, one of the dishes called injera is served there unfortunately the day we came it was not on the menu that day but we were able to try the vegan burrito, kabocha kale salad and a taro burger. I was finally able to break away from my family of meat eaters and visit this vegan/vegetarian restaurant! I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. I saw it while I was driving to food land. The menu has a lot of yummy options! The lady who worked there said the butternut squash Alfredo was the best dish on the menu. I didn't end up getting it because I wasn't in the mood for pasta. I was so torn between the high protein veggie sandwich or the Cali burrito. The girl said young unhealthy people get the Cali burrito and healthy older people get the veggie sandwich LOL okay. I ended up getting the high protein veggie sandwich and it was AMAZING! I loved all the veggies in it and it had so much flavor. It was so good. I really liked whatever sauce they used with the veggies. It was just really delicious and I definitely recommend getting it! My sister got the taro burger and she said it was alright. I didn't try it but it looked kind of bland. We also got the keiki mac & cheese... and I do not recommend it. The girl said it was really good... and we both thought it was horrible. It lacked flavor and was very bland... I loved the whole idea of the zero waste idea! They wrap your food in ti leaves! But if you get any dish that they can't wrap in ti leaves (pasta, salad, sushi, etc) you'll have to bring your own takeout container or rent one for $10!! Which is pretty expensive. Overall I liked this restaurant. Everything was very expensive though which was unfortunate. I definitely recommend the veggie sandwich though! read more

I decided to go here for my birthday dinner (which happened to be our last night of vacation) because of the large selection of vegetarian food and the excellent reviews, and boy was I glad I did. The food is insanely good! I had the taro burger and loved every bite. My husband had the buffalo cauliflower wrap and it was very tasty, with a little heat to it. He loved his meal as much as I loved mine. We also appreciated the responsibility chalkboard and the entire ethical way this restaurant interacts with its customers and suppliers. It's such a great business model and they are producing truly wonderful food that's both tasty and healthy. I only wish I had tried this place earlier in our vacation. I would have eaten here multiple times! It's definitely a place I will go back to the next time I am in Maui. read more

I really want to give this restaurant more stars, because I love the concept, but the execution has been hit and miss. Let's start with the really good. On our first visit I had the Ruben and my wife had the Alfredo and we shared the broccoli fritters. I loved the Ruben and the Alfredo, the fritters were a bit over garlicky, but that could be just our take. Because of the first try, went went back again. My wife got the pizza and I got a papaya bowl. Very disappointed in the papaya bowl as the papaya wasn't ripe (the counter person had to ask if I could have it because it was just after breakfast hours). Why say yes you can get it when the ingredients aren't ripe? The pizza was so oily that my wife had oil dripping down to her elbow. Big miss. We went back for a third time for breakfast. The pancakes were ok, but the portion size was really small. The vegan burrito done as a skillet was basically the pizza without a crust, yet equally as oily. If their consistency goes up, I would add a star to my rating. More misses than hits so far. read more

We came here because it's one of the few restaurants in this part of Maui with lots of vegan options (it's technically vegetarian because they serve eggs and honey). The only reason I am even giving this place 2 stars is because their drinks and service were absolutely amazing! Sadly I can not say the same for the food... we had the king pho bowl, moku bowel, and a burrito. The pho bowl was one of the worst things I have ever eaten, maybe I can't actually call the taste horrible since their wasn't any at all. It was the most bland thing I have ever eaten in my entire life, none of the veggies had flavor and was paired with this very sweet sauce. It sounded so flavorful and delicious but HAD to send it back for a moku bowl to give it another try. Sadly the bowl was completely filled with quinoa, 3 tiny slices of tomato and cucumber and 2 burnt slices of eggplant... And some Roman lettuce Chopped up. I only ate the veggies and just left... The burrito was the best out of the 3 but was still lacking in flavor and the tiny size for $20 was a lot less than half the size you can get at chipotle. I've been vegan for 5 years and have traveled all over the US and different and this sadly was the worst vegan food I have ever had. Bloody Mary mix was AMAZING I even dared to say it was the best one I have ever had! Even my husbands was taken aback at how good it was he dared to say "oh we're in for a treat with the food then if the drinks are THIS good" sadly that was not the case. Let's just say adding some salt and spices could go a long way with their food since the quality of the produce was so good. What a shame and a waste read more

What's not to love about Moku Roots?! Excellent variety of vegan food with nothing but fresh ingredients. Their drinks are also worth talking about since they are made daily with locally sourced ingredients. Some of the items they put together are definitely new combinations of flavors I had never seen or tasted before. I love this place. I am visiting from California and am sick of the resort restaurants which though fine all seem the same. Today we ordered the falafel wrap, buffalo cauliflower wrap and vegan Cobb salad. Everything was delicious. Favorite was cauliflower wrap. Least favorite was faux bacon in Cobb salad but still ate it all. People are super nice. And on top of all of this they wrap everything in banana leaves or a refundable tin container. So they are leading the charge toward protecting the planet. HUGE kudos. And if you don't care, you should... or of course you do because you love Hawaii and Hawaii is fragile and needs to be protected. Like earth. Such a great find!!! We were just wandering in Lahaina and found this restaurant. The place has a very cool, friendly vibe and everything is pretty much vegetarian/vegan.
